Still not sure Georgia’s in play, but…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Democracy Corps, a nonprofit run by James Carville and longtime Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg, just released a survey of 600 likely voters here in Georgia. Their finding?
“Barack Obama has no business winning in Georgia this year. Neither does U.S. Senate candidate Jim Martin. Yet both Democrats are within striking range in a state President Bush carried by 17 points in 2004, and where in the last six years Republicans replaced Democrats in both Senate seats, and won the governor’s office for the first time since Reconstruction. John McCain leads Barack Obama by just two points (44 - 46 percent) and Jim Martin trails incumbent Senator Saxby Chambliss by just 4 points, 44 - 48 percent.”
According to the poll, Martin has only a name identification of only 55 percent, suggesting a lot of potential upside. Only 39 percent rate Chambliss’ performance as good or excellent.
Their findings in the presidential race would be easier to dismiss without a recent spate of other polls that also show the contest tightening in Georgia. The last 10 polls taken here all put the margin in single digits. Here’s the aggregate poll trend as reflected by the folks at Pollster.com.
For some reason, the folks at Democracy Corps also asked whether voters would choose Roy Barnes or Karen Handel in a governor’s race come 2010 — Barnes wins 49 to 35 percent.
And the most popular political figure in Georgia? Who else but Zell Miller, followed closely by Sonny Perdue.

Neither Obama nor Martin have a snowball’s chance in Hades of carrying Georgia, unfortunately. But it is encouraging that Obama looks to rack up about 350 electoral votes, meaning we can all go to bed early on Tuesday 11/4. What’s the over/under on the number of states the GOP is going to declare voter fraud in?

Another day, another poll thrown up here with no real analysis. This time we have a sample of 600. 208 Democrats, 162 Independents, 218 Republicans, and 12 others.
Of the 208 Democrats the breakdown was 72 white and and 136 an unspecified non white voter. The survey also was very heavily weighted to the Atlanta area. Far more than the population breakdown of the state.
Oddly it was polls almost identical to this one that led to the rise of the mythical Bradley effect years ago. Sounds like a poll with a built in purpose for blaming racism when the numbers aren’t anywhere this poll results on election day.

I want to see Chambliss fall hard! I called his office to see if he would denounce the horrible robocalls of the McCain campaign and he would not. His staffer said he wouldn’t, that they were true. But what can you expect from a man who tried to connect Cleland, Vietnam vet, triple amputee, with Bin Laden. No one needs to lose his seat more than Saxby Chambliss.

Joy,
Yesterday i got a piece of mail from some shadowy group called the Americans for Job Security.
I did some research and found MUCH unflattering info about them, including this:
The Center for Responsive Politics wrote in April 2007 that Americans for Job Security (AJS) is a Republican “sham front group that would be better called Corporations Influencing Elections … masquerading as a non-profit to conceal its funding and the scope of its electioneering activities”.
Incorporated October 1997 in Virginia, AJS was described by the Center as “pro-Republican”, “pro-business” and “established to directly counter labor’s influence”.
It is alleged that AJS was founded by Marc F. Racicot “with a $1 million donation” from the American Insurance Association. Racicot headed George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign and is a former Republican National Committee chairman.
OK, one does not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the flier which makes Jim Martin out to be a seditious tax and spender is just another typical Suxtobeus Chambliss hatchet job replete with half-truths and outright lies. Though his name nor the RNC is never mentioned.
But that Blood & Guts hides behind these scumbags, who are connected to the Swift Boaters is pretty pathetic in my opinion.
I wrote an email to his office saying so, in much more delicate language of course, but made it clear that many of us Georgia veterans are still angry at him about the Cleland ads in his last campaign. And that Jim Martin would get my vote.
I also called and then emailed Jim Martin’s office (the dumbarses put his phone number right on the flier!) to tell them about it. His campaign manger wrote me back and said thank you for that and for my vote.
Just doing my part to help get that shameful POS out of office.

I don’t care much at all for Bortz but on occasion he does say something useful:
Taxes are a nasty little reality of life. Nobody wants anarchy. Government is a necessity. Government, though, is not supposed to create winners and losers. Government is not, as Obama intends, to be used as an instrument of plunder. Almost all Americans are perfectly willing to surrender an appropriate percentage of their earned wealth to fund the legitimate functions of government. I, for one, don’t want to see my wealth confiscated because some bureaucrat has determined I don’t “need” it, and then have to watch as that wealth is used to buy votes from someone who is simply too lazy to generate the income they need by themselves … or, as Obama puts it, “spread around.”
It’s for the good of the state, as the communists used to say.
And still do.

McCain has cut into Obama’s lead for a second day and is now just 1.1 points behind. The spread was 3.7 Wednesday and 6.0 Tuesday. The Republican is making headway with middle- and working- class voters, and has surged 10 points in two days among those earning between $30,000 and $75,000. Interesting fourth quarter forecast at Stratfor. Too long, but in summary, our economic crisis is on the mend, while Europes and the rest of the worlds is flailing. It’ll take all of 2009 before they see light. It goes on to talk about U.S. priorities.

Iraq
There is no #3. Iran is no longer able to incite much of anything in Iraq. The Grand Ayatollah ali Al Sistani holds more influence than the shiite cleric who (from Iran) is attempting to stir the pot without much luck.
It mentions Russia’s resurgence, but?
Onto other things before……..
Crude oil prices dropped following a statement by Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi that Saudi Arabia did not plan to cut oil production. Iran has called on OPEC to cut production.
Venezuela AND Mexico are struggling financially. Given Mexico’s critically important geographic position as a U.S. neighbor, the United States and the International Monetary Fund historically have bailed Mexico out — and likely will do so again. Venezuela, however, may be left in the cold. As to Russia?
There is a rumor racing through Russia that the government is about to devalue the ruble because its financial system is precarious. Already the rumor is running through Russian chat rooms and news blogs and has led Russian citizens to steadily increase their demand for U.S. dollars.
The United States may or may not have had a hand in the rumor, but anything that makes the Russians think twice is certainly something that Washington would want to consider these days. And that will be doubly the case until Washington can develop some tougher tools with which to counter Russia’s (until very recently) growing clout. Russia’s surge is part income, part momentum and part chutzpah — and a good economic crash would derail all three.

The implications of such discussion, in advance of any action, are pretty sobering to contemplate. There’ve been substantiated reports of property destruction against McCain supporters, now a physical assault. Not just hitting, but holding a woman down and carving her face with a knife. If that’d happened to an Iraqi woman by a US serviceman the NY Times would have it on the front page. For days. I haven’t had anything sicken me like this for a long time.
But on a nicer note, earlier you posted a link to a column by Orson Scott Card. Thanks. He’s a noted author - his first book, one of my favorites, “Ender’s Game” was a Hugo Award winner - top award in Science Fiction/Fantasy. Another of his works is a recurring favorite of mine: Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus.”
Without giving too much away, the idea of the second is, what if we could go back in time and stop Columbus from discovering the New World, thereby averting one of the greatest tragedies in history, the obliteration of Native Americans by disease, followed by slavery? And what if we then find that a team had already gone back and guided Columbus to the New World to avert an even greater horror?
I love ‘what if’ scenarios. This one was well written and developed.

I’ve listened to many reports of how emotions are high, how there are these various “derangement syndromes,” how people are chanting and expressing violence at rallies, how supporters of either candidate destroy the property of the supporters of the other candidate. We also saw the youtube of the epithets, hand signals and screams directed at McCain supporters marching through San Francisco.
Now an instance where it has escalated not just to violence, but to horrific violence.
An isolated instance? I hope so. But it’s entirely possible such acts may be repeated. Lots of sickos out there. So I would hope for a general call by the community of citizens of “this is wrong, this is about ideas” to head off anything else and keep this a single, isolated incident.
Which is why I brought it up. Actions begin with thoughts. Lots of violent thoughts against fellow citizens. It needs to stop.
Oh, and the story didn’t generate from Fox. It was from the Pittsburgh Trib.

Paul,
from the link I just posted, here are the doctor’s comments:
Wyld.DR said…
Sorry to say but as a Physician, those lacerations (if you want to call them that)could not come from a knife of any sort, sharp or dull. Also, from the way her cheek is manifesting as red and irritated (synonymous for scratches) makes it an easy prognosis for me: This is indeed a self-inflicted 'wound' most likely done with either a paper clip or quite possibly a fingernail. If you would look at the BOTTOM of the letter, there are 2 DISTINCT and SEPARATE marks (what did the mugger do? Go over the same area with a different line?). This is not plausible in any form. This is a fraudulent attempt at falsifying an attack and is illegal since a police report was filed. Why was she allowed to 'walk away' from the scene or a mugging/attack? She never offered a description of her attacker other than he was 'supposedly' an Obama supporter. Was he white, black, latino?? This is outrageous and demands further scrutiny. Also suspect are the blackeyes. Although real, the contusions are not reminiscent of a frontal punch as there are no abrasions/contusions above the eye socket (men have big, large knuckles) and the area around the eye socket is sensitive soft tissues. This woman is committing fraud via Munchhausen By Proxy and should be jailed for submitting a false police report/complaint. And the only reason WHY she would refuse to seek medical treatment is that she knows her story would not hold up under a physicians examination. And no, I am not an Obama supporter, I am voting McCain but these false allegations and rumors must stop. As a Dr, I can not fathom why people go to great lengths to lie about being attacked. Someone needs to have her examined for 'a possible concussion' from being 'punched in the head', that alone would have allowed the police to forcefully admit her as if she in some way passes out while driving home after the 'attack, the police department would be liable for allowing her to leave with possible 'brain trauma'. This story is a joke and not funny people.By Paul

Wrong. She just had the privilege of meeting the distinguished Senator from Arizona. Unfortunately, she made a comment about him losing his hair. McCain, having learned his lesson after using the “c-word” toward his wife responded physically instead of verbally.
