10 immigrants killed in SUV crash
Ten undocumented immigrants “stacked like wood” in the back of a sport utility vehicle crammed with at least 22 people were killed when the driver lost control and rolled over on a remote southern Arizona highway, authorities in Sonoita, Ariz., said Sunday. The Ford Excursion had no rear seat and most of the men and women were ejected when the SUV crashed just before midnight Saturday about 40 miles southeast of Tucson. Authorities said all the victims are believed to be undocumented immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and perhaps Mexico.
Fire victims rap official response
Residents of Myrtle Beach, S.C., who lost everything in an April wildfire are asking why officials gave them just minutes to evacuate when flames had been raging for most of the previous day. The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that police videos, 911 calls and emergency radio traffic show a chaotic attempt to get people out of Barefoot Resort, one of the city’s largest residential developments. The fire destroyed 76 homes and damaged 78 others at a total estimated cost of $19 million.

Authorities say they are investigating a natural gas explosion at the Fort Worth, Texas, home of megachurch pastor T.D. Jakes. Fort Worth fire spokesman Lt. Kent Worley says the blast Sunday in the sunroom of the home appears to have been an accident. Authorities say no one was injured and there was no fire. Jakes is pastor of The Potter’s House, a Dallas megachurch.
Woman charged with murder
Authorities in Oregon say they have arrested a woman after a newborn she claimed was hers died and the body of a woman who had been pregnant was found at her home. Washington County officials said 27-year-old Korena Elaine Roberts was being held without bail Sunday on a murder charge.
The county sheriff’s office said police went to a home in Hillsboro after a report that a newborn was not breathing. Officials said Roberts told them she had recently delivered the baby boy. Roberts and the child were taken to a hospital, where doctors were unable to revive the boy. Authorities said the doctors also determined that Roberts had not given birth. Officers searched Roberts’ home and found the mother’s body in a crawl space.

The Boston Globe’s largest employees union faces an important contract vote today. Guild members will vote whether to accept an 8.3 percent wage cut, five-day unpaid furloughs and cuts in benefits including health care, 401(k) contributions and pensions. The contract also would eliminate lifetime job guarantees for 190 Guild workers. The newspaper’s parent company, New York Times Co., is trying to avoid shutting down the 137-year-old newspaper.
