Braves hit romance home run to Vegas

Atlanta Braves Tom Glavine, Brian McCann, Chipper Jones, Derek Lowe, Jeff Francoeur and Kelly Johnson, along with former Braves Deion Sanders, Terry Pendleton, John Smoltz, Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy, Greg Maddux and legendary Braves announcer Skip Caray were all guests of honor this month when Julie Holzer married Joel Pazina in Las Vegas.

Well, OK, technically, the Braves were in Atlanta sitting out a rain delay with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But the players, along with their beloved late announcer, all had tables named for them at the bride and groom’s wedding reception due to their special role in the couple’s romance.

The bride’s mother, our former colleague Helen Holzer, tells Buzz the Las Vegas-based pair first met online at eHarmony after they noticed they shared a mutual love of the Braves in their profiles. Growing up in Atlanta, it was only natural that Julie would root for the Braves. But Oregon native Pazina, meanwhile, became a fan as a kid in the 1980s thanks to televised games on TBS.

The theme for the May 17 Las Vegas wedding reception was “Great Braves Players in History.” And last week, the bride introduced her new hubby to Atlanta and Turner Field at two Braves games in her old hometown.

The Braves delivered a wedding gift to the newlyweds by beating the Colorado Rockies during both outings. Thankfully, Holzer and Pazina, honeymooning in St. Lucia Wednesday, had their cellphones switched off so the pesky likes of us could not reach them for direct comment.

Tyler Perry on ‘Trek,’ Jackson

Atlanta director Tyler Perry was his usual hilarious self when he phoned into Q100’s The Bert Show Wednesday morning from Los Angeles to promote the new season of his second shot-in-Atlanta TBS sitcom “Meet the Browns.”

Marveling at the 30-plus film productions either now shooting or set to shoot in his hometown (thanks to the state tax incentives approved last year), Perry, who’s shot eight feature films here in the past five years, declined to accept all the credit for helping to create a film financial windstorm: “Maybe I brought a little bit of wind to it.”

When asked if he’s now respected by the Hollywood mainstream, Perry cracked: “Who gives a damn?! When you open a movie at $41 million, everything changes. L.A. is really the last place to catch on. Crossing that three-hour time zone is like crossing into the ‘Twilight Zone!’ I own all my films. I’m glad they caught on late. The deal is sweeter!”

On his surprise cameo in the summer blockbuster “Star Trek,” Perry explained that he and “Trek” director and TV’s hit “Lost” co-creator J.J. Abrams are pals: “He’s like the Jewish version of me. I’m just a foot taller!”

Up next for Perry: directing the sequel to 2006’s “Why Did I Get Married” this summer here in Atlanta with Janet Jackson and Jill Scott. As for Internet speculation that Jackson’s weight is once again on the rise, Perry dismissed the rumors, saying: “If she gained 60 pounds, they must be in a bag somewhere because I’m not seeing it.”

Celebs set to ‘Shake It Up’ for charity

Atlanta attorney and Keep Georgia Safe founder Gary Martin Hays and the non-profit’s executive director Mary Ellen Fulkus will add some genuine rock ‘n’ roll star power for tonight’s celebrity bartender fund-raiser for the state child abduction prevention charity.

Buzz has learned that Collective Soul’s brothers Ed and Dean Roland, fresh from recording their new studio album at an undisclosed location in the North Georgia mountains, will be mixing it up behind the bar with fans tonight at 6 to 9 p.m. at Urban Flats at 2450 Piedmont Road in Buckhead.

They’ll be joined by WXIA-TV’s “Atlanta & Co” hosts Holly Firfer and Tom Sullivan, V-103’s Frank Ski and Atlanta real estate mogul Lee Najjar, Fox 5’s “Good Day Atlanta” hosts Suchita Vadlamani and Mark Hayes and CBS 46’s “Better Mornings” correspondent Corinna Allen.

We’re told 100 percent of tonight’s “Shake It Up” proceeds will go directly to the charity and in keeping with the evening’s central theme, drivers from Zingo transportation will help you get home.
