BRAVES NOTES
Team Glavine adds a boy
Recent adoption gives veteran pitcher five kids.

Tom Glavine mentioned a couple of tasks that make his surgically repaired shoulder bark these days —- lifting a gallon of milk from a top shelf … holding his new baby.
That’s right. The 43-year-old Glavine and his wife Chris have a 4-week-old baby: a son Kienan Patrick, whom they adopted. The Glavines had four children already —- Amber, 14, by Glavine’s previous marriage, Jonathan, 14, by Chris’ previous marriage and two sons together, Peyton, 10, and Mason, 8.
Glavine has a lot going on in his life other than trying to return from shoulder and elbow surgery. In that comeback department, though, his shoulder bounced back well enough from his simulated game Monday that he expects to pitch his scheduled minor league rehabilitation outing Saturday in Gwinnett.
Glavine said Chris was hoping they’d adopt a girl and thought that’s what they had until having an ultrasound. Glavine said after this, though, no more kids. He said if the itch comes again for a girl, he’ll tell Chris, “You can wait for grandchildren.”
Chris met the mother of their child by chance at a restaurant after returning from visiting Tom in spring training. The Glavines were present for the birth.
“It’s one of those things that makes you believe even more in divine intervention,” Glavine said.
He also said when the mother met Chris, she didn’t know who Tom Glavine was. So he knows the adoption was based on “seeing what we provide as a family.”
Kienan will be the first child who won’t know Glavine as a pitcher. “He’ll know me as, ‘Dad, don’t you work?’” Glavine said with a smile.
Once his comeback is over, Glavine expects to have shoulder surgery just for quality of life.
Lineup shuffle
After the Braves scored one run in two games, manager Bobby Cox shuffled the lineup Tuesday. He dropped Kelly Johnson, who has hit .191 in the leadoff spot (18-for-94) with a .262 on-base percentage, to the No. 6 spot.
He bumped Yunel Escobar to leadoff and moved Casey Kotchman to the No. 2 hole. He also swapped Brian McCann and Garret Anderson to get McCann back in the cleanup spot and Anderson batting fifth.
“The last few days we haven’t done much. Why not?” Cox said.
Johnson started 0-for-8 this homestand, is hitting .225 and has been platooning with Omar Infante.
Smoltz ties the knot
Saturday was a big day for former Braves pitcher John Smoltz, who was married to Kathryn Darden.
Smoltz has four children by his previous marriage and Darden has two. The wedding was held at Smoltz’s house in Alpharetta in front of about 70 friends and family. The couple is in Fort Myers, Fla., where Smoltz is rehabbing from shoulder surgery for the Boston Red Sox.
Smoltz’s former teammate and friend Jeff Francoeur said Smoltz would have another celebration after the season that players could attend.
