To celebrate a birth in the family six years ago, Susan Reisch gave the new mother a birch tree in honor of her infant son. Now once a year, her cousin sends a picture of the child standing next to the tree, which symbolizes youth, birth and renewal.
Reisch, who is the urban and community forestry coordinator for the Georgia Forestry Commission, hopes that others may commemorate similar life moments with GeorgiaGrove.org, a new informational Web site launched in partnership with the Georgia Urban Forest Council.
“The Grove” is geared toward encouraging people to plant a tree for a lasting legacy, while also helping replace the estimated 50 acres of tree canopy lost each day to development in the state between 1991 and 2005, she said.
Users can search for trees by life moments, such as marriage or retirement; by sentiment, such as expressing love or friendship; or by tree, to read the meaning of each. The site also teaches about selection, tree care and planting tips.
Ready to dig? Here’s a sampling of special moments and suggested trees to plant …
> Mother’s Day: A redbud, which symbolizes protection, expression and connection. According to the Grove, the tree is known for its beauty and stability, growing in even the most challenging locations.
> Graduation: The cherry tree, signifying “new awakenings.” “Because its transformation through the seasons is very visible, it is a reminder of the cycle of life traveled by humans, animals and plants alike,” according to the site.
> Retirement: The walnut tree, which represents “easing transitions.” The Grove explains that the walnut signifies following a unique path, reminding us to do the things that make you truly happy and your life worthwhile.
