NFL COMBINE REPORT
Singletary won’t pursue Vick trade

Indianapolis —- San Francisco coach Mike Singletary reiterated that the 49ers are not interested in trading for imprisoned and suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.
He did not rule out pursuing him in the future when Vick’s status is resolved.
“Anything can happen, but I feel that right now the most important thing for us is to focus on the quarterbacks that we have,” Singletary said Friday at the NFL scouting combine. “Knowing that Michael Vick is under contract, knowing that he has his own situation that he has to deal with, we are not going to go there.”
Vick is to be released from federal prison July 20. He would have to be reinstated by the NFL.
The Falcons have announced their intentions to trade his rights. If they can’t find a trade party and they release Vick once he is reinstated, they would take a $15.430 million salary-cap hit in 2009. He also is due a $680,000 bonus in 2010.
The team is still seeking a return of some of the bonus money paid to Vick. That legal issue has not been resolved.
“I think anytime that a team embraces someone like Michael Vick … a team has to decide if they have the infrastructure that is strong enough to bring him in, that can handle it,” Singletary said.
Analyst slams Tech’s Johnson
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is not a big fan of Georgia Tech defensive end Michael Johnson.
“He’s 6-7, 260. He’s going to run like a wide receiver. He’s going to jump like a running back,” Mayock said. “Everybody is going to fall in love with him. But there is way too much bad [game] tape of him for me to even like him a little bit. I don’t like him at all.”
Johnson is rated the fifth-best defensive end in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com and is projected to go in the second round.
“I’m not going to get carried away with him,” Mayock said. “Every time somebody tells me that I’m wrong, I’m just going to tell them to put another tape in and watch him. I don’t see hustle. I don’t see toughness. What I do see is that he flashes brilliance once in a while, and that’s going to make people want to take him.”
Mayock went so far as to question Johnson’s heart.
“If you take that little nose tackle at Iowa, Mitch King, and put his heart in Michael Johnson’s body, you’d have a Hall of Fame player,” Mayock said. “I just think Michael Johnson is so talented, but he’s wasting it.”
“Michael Johnson does his very best at all times,” said Richard Kopelman, Johnson’s Atlanta-based agent. “Mr. Mayock has not met Michael, nor has he spoken to any of his coaches in college.”
