Colt McCoy passed for 414 yards and two touchdowns, the second to Quan Cosby with 16 seconds to play, to carry third-ranked Texas to a 24-21 win over No. 10 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday night at Glendale, Ariz.
McCoy finished with a school-record 41 completions and ran for Texas’ first touchdown.
With Texas (12-1) trailing 6-3, he scored the Longhorns’ first touchdown on a 14-yard run when he spun around Buckeyes cornerback Malcolm Jenkins. The defender had ducked, and McCoy easily danced around him en route to the end zone.
Texas’ second touchdown came when McCoy rolled to his right, spotted Jordan Shipley in the end zone and fired just as Cosby, who was running the other way, stepped in for the grab and the score.
The Buckeyes battered McCoy all game, sacking him twice and knocking him down numerous times. Twice in the first half he took shots to the head by defensive lineman Thaddeus Gibson. On one sack, Gibson wrapped up McCoy with both arms, picked him up and slammed him down.
After Ohio State (10-3) took a 21-17 lead on Terrelle Pryor’s catch late in the fourth, McCoy coolly drove the Longhorns to the winning touchdown.
McCoy fired a dart to Cosby across the middle. Cosby slipped a tackle and dived into the end zone without a Buckeye defender within 10 yards.
Jagodzinksi, Eagles AD at odds
Boston college coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been invited to interview for the New York Jets’ coaching job, a BC official told The Associated Press, and the school has reportedly threatened to fire him if he goes through with it. Athletics director Gene DeFilippo would not confirm that he gave Jagodzinski an ultimatum, saying only, “I want a coach who wants to be at BC for a long time.”
ESPN.com reported that Jagodzinski would not be welcome to return if he seeks work in the NFL. A BC official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator committed to stay in Chestnut Hill longer than two years when he was hired. DeFilippo first learned of Jagodzinski’s contact with the Jets on Saturday and had not spoken to him since Sunday, the official said.
> NORTH CAROLINA: Receiver Hakeem Nicks said he plans to skip his final season. Nicks is UNC’s all-time leader in catches, yardage and touchdown receptions. He had eight catches for 217 yards and three TDs in the Meineke Bowl loss to West Virginia.
> SO. MISS: Linebacker Gerald McRath, from McEachern High, declared for the NFL draft. McRath made 137 tackles (78 solo) during his junior season, and has 386 tackles, 32 1/2 tackles for loss and eight sacks in his career.
> IOWA STATE: Coach Paul Rhoads has hired former Auburn assistant Terry Price as defensive ends coach. Price spent last season working with Rhoads, who was Auburn’s defensive coordinator.
> LSU: John Chavis, a veteran defensive coordinator with 20 years of experience in the SEC, was named the Tigers’ new defensive coordinator.
