Store offers the old, the new, the offbeat

A mix of the old, the new and the one-of-a-kind is blended in the showroom of Stanton Home Furnishings. The store opened in the Edgewood shopping center three years ago, after a successful four years in Decatur.

Along with home decor and furnishings, shoppers at Stanton will find a complimentary design service, owner Jimmy Stanton said.

“We will help people pick pieces for a room or match furniture with accessories,” he said. “We also do design work if they’re looking for a complete redo.”

The store has an array of fabrics that customers can select to personalize their furniture. “Or, they can purchase a fabric they like and we’ll ship it away and have a sofa done for you,” Stanton said.

The company also has an online store and can ship items across the country.

What you’ll find

The eclectic mix of merchandise covers new pieces by well-known names such as Cisco or Lee as well as antiques. “So you might find an old toolbox next to a new sofa,” Stanton said.”Some things might be 10 years old; others may be 150 years old. In some cases we have both. For instance, we have a dining table with a top made of old wood so it’s part old, part new.”

Sofas, chairs and ottomans can range from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on the size and fabric. Dining, sofa and occasional tables are in stock, along with an assortment of chairs. Lighting is a big draw, and the space is well-lit by lanterns, basket lamps, lights made of iron, table lamps and pole lamps.

Most of the furniture is shown in neutral shades and accented with colorful pillows in various patterns and designs. Rugs, mirrors, artwork and wall hangings abound, along with decor accents from oversized architectural pieces to small figurines. There’s also a selection of coffee-table books.

Best-sellers

“We sell candles like crazy,” Stanton said. “Our signature fragrance is a Seda France candle in Japanese quince. It’s insane that we sell about 30 of them a week for $28 each.”

Pillows are another popular item with Stanton shoppers. “They’re not very expensive and they’re the easiest way to add a pop of color to a room.”

Trends

Stanton sees his clientele becoming more and more eco-conscious. He serves that market by stocking several high-end lines that feature “green” fabrics and upholstery.

“I get calls on that topic daily,” he said. “Buyers are very conscious of the environment and aware of what they’re buying.”
