Ann Arbor, Mich. —- DeShawn Sims made an 18-foot shot from the corner as time expired in overtime to rally Michigan to a 66-64 victory over Savannah State.
“When the ball is being thrown on the sideline, we try to be the outlet for the guy on the sideline,” Sims said. “Manny [Harris] was able to give me the pass, and I drained the shot.”
Sims said that was the first time he’s hit a jumper to win a game since the 10th grade.
Sims, who led all scorers with 23 points, and Harris, with 22, helped the Wolverines erase a 20-point halftime deficit.
“We were clearly rattled at halftime,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “I felt we didn’t need a coach to go in there and rattle them some more. It wasn’t like they weren’t trying.”
Michigan started the second half by scoring 15 points in a row. Harris sent the game into overtime when he made two free throws with 35 seconds remaining.
Freshman Zack Novak stole the ball in the final three seconds of regulation, drove the length of floor and missed a dunk that would have given Michigan the win.
“I think they kind of got a kick out of it,” Novak said. “They probably wanted to kick me at the same time.”
Raye Bailey and Anthony Jones had 19 and 13, respectively, for the Tigers (4-2) who led nearly all but three minutes of regulation.
After taking a 7-4 lead against Savannah State, Michigan had nine turnovers, and the Tigers reeled off 20 straight points.
