Job cuts at Weather Channel
Losses at Shaw, gains at Wendy’s/Arby’s
Staff and wire reports
Thursday, November 20, 2008
Job losses continue across metro Atlanta and Georgia, with the Weather Channel announcing Wednesday that it has laid off some of its staff.
It is unclear how many people were cut or whether they are receiving a severance package. NBC Universal bought the Weather Channel in September. Company officials would not comment beyond a statement:
“The economic realities of recent months have created challenges for everyone in our business. In addition, when NBC Universal purchased the Weather Channel earlier this year, we expected that there would be cost synergies as part of company reorganization. While it is always difficult to lose valued employees, we are doing our best to minimize the impact, and remain committed to providing the highest quality content that our viewers have come to expect from the Weather Channel.”
Also, Shaw Industries will cut 125 jobs at its Calhoun plant because of production changes.
The Dalton-based company said it will contract with a Calhoun-based company for cutting, sewing and packaging at rug facility Plant 7G, allowing Shaw to focus on tufting, dyeing and coating. Shaw did not identify the company that will assume the Plant 7G duties.
The company said it hoped to place affected employees at other Shaw locations. But it cautioned in a news release that, “Current market conditions, among other factors, make it difficult to predict how many displaced people may be successfully place during the coming months.”
On a brighter note —- at least for metro Atlanta —- the Wendy’s/Arby’s Group said Wednesday it expects to relocate at least 120 jobs to Atlanta from Ohio for its corporate support center.
Wendy’s, based in Dublin, Ohio, and Atlanta-based Triarc, the parent company of Arby’s, completed in September a merger to create Atlanta-based Wendy’s/Arby’s Group. When the deal was announced in April, Triarc and Wendy’s said a support center would be created in Atlanta to handle public company responsibilities and shared services. The headquarters and restaurant support staff for the Wendy’s brand will stay in Ohio.
