Old, damaged utility pole taken down
For the Journal-Constitution
Friday, April 03, 2009
Rosa Best-Johnson of Decatur e-mailed recently asking for help getting a damaged utility pole near her home taken down.
The pole —- its base cracked and splintered, presumably by a misdirected car —- was on Wesley Chapel Road across from Crabapple Lane. A much healthier-looking pole stands next to the damaged one. Wires tying the two together were about the only thing keeping the old pole from crashing to the ground.
Best-Johnson says things had been this way since early last year and she was ready for someone to address the safety hazard.
Take to Task called Georgia Power Co., where a spokeswoman said her company erected the new pole and transferred its wires in February 2008. She said they’d be glad to take the damaged pole down, but wires owned by AT&T were still attached to it.
Our next call was to AT&T spokesman Joe Chandler, who promptly sent out a crew to remove the remaining wires.
On Wednesday, Best-Johnson e-mailed to say the damaged pole had been taken down early this week. She’s glad the safety hazard has been addressed, but hopes someone comes back to pick up the old pole, which is now lying on the ground next to the new one.
