A 14-year-old boy shot by a Henry County police officer who confronted him at a burglary scene early Sunday morning remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday.

Henry County police said the teen was trying to break into an Army-Navy surplus store on Ga. 42 in Stockbridge at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, police spokesman Jason Bolton said.

A silent alarm was tripped, and when the responding officer arrived, the boy ran toward a minivan registered to his mother, Bolton said. After a brief tussle, police said the youth jumped into the vehicle, threw it into reverse and nearly hit a second officer who had just arrived.

The first officer fired at the teen, hitting him “more than once,” Bolton said. Bolton declined to provide details of the boy’s injuries, citing an ongoing investigation.

The boy was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Police are not identifying the boy because he is a minor.

Bolton said Monday morning that the boy was “recovering well,” but would likely be hospitalized at least through Tuesday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the incident, Bolton said. The officer who fired the shots is on paid leave pending the outcome of that inquiry, he said.
