The shelves are mostly bare at the once-booming International Farmers Market in Chamblee. Employee Robert Salassi said the market could close in the next week.
Owners did not return phone calls asking about the market’s future.
The few items left in the store are on liquidation.
The large market has been popular with the area’s Hispanic population and Indian and East Asian communities. It sold whole goats, popular among Hispanic clientele, and also Halal meat, which complied with Islamic food standards.
This week there was no meat or fish or baked goods on sale, and very little produce. Bottles of wine were two for one.
The farmer’s market opened in 1991 and is located at 5193 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. (The city of Chamblee recently changed the name of the street to Peachtree Boulevard.)
“It’s sad. It’s really sad,” said regular customer Satish Veerachari, 36, who likes the market’s pick of Indian spices. “They used to have everything fresh,” he said.
