Lifestyle: The Retreat at Lost Mountain
Spaciousness appeals to Texas transplants
For the AJC
Sunday, June 28, 2009
Glenn Field put a contract on a new home at The Retreat at Lost Mountain before his wife-to-be, Lara, who was still working in Texas, stepped foot into it. But she saw plenty of photos of the Powder Springs house. The Fields found it was exactly what they wanted. Glenn, 44, owns a sports memorabilia framing company, and Lara, 32, works in the multifamily residential industry.

Getting there
Take I-75 north to Exit 269 (Barrett Parkway) and turn left onto Barrett Parkway. Turn right onto Dallas Highway. Turn left onto Lost Mountain Road. Travel about 2.5 miles and the community will be on the right.

'I think the house found me'
Q: How long did you search?
A: Lara: We started in October.
Glenn: I think we looked at over 50 homes, at least. It was tough for us because I lived in Austell at the time in an apartment and Lara was commuting.
Q: What were you looking for in a home?
A: Lara: Lots of space. The first night we stayed there, I stopped and I thought, “It’s so quiet.” It’s more space than we almost know what to do with.
Q: How did you find the home in The Retreat?
A: Glenn: I had been commuting back and forth to Atlanta to be with my boys. In August, I moved into an apartment and commuted to Dallas (Texas). I drove by (the community) on a rainy day. The back door was open to the house we now own. The living room was just so open. You could definitely have 25 people in there with a nice big screen TV and you could have a really nice football game-watching party. I just walked in and I said, “I think this is it.” I got my boys and they said, “Oh dad, are we getting this?”
Q: Lara, what did you think when you heard about it?
A: Lara: I was a little nervous, but I trusted him. We had already looked at so many that I knew what I wanted and what I didn’t want. He sent me pictures from his iPhone and gave me all the detail that he could.
Q: What type of upgrades did you get?
A: Glenn: We had them put in a bigger patio, butler’s pantry, refrigerator.
Lara: The faux wood blinds. Since this is my first house, I never would have thought in a million years that the garage door opener wouldn’t have come with the house. The opener was an upgrade.
Q: What tip would you give someone buying their first place?
A: Glenn: Ask for more cable outlets and phone outlets. There’s electrical outlets all over the house, but the cable outlet and phone outlet, there’s only two. It’s incredibly inconvenient.
At a glance
