What ‘green’ means

Sunday, December 07, 2008

Rebecca Jacobs, an Atlanta Realtor with Jenny Pruitt and Associates, talks about the increased interest in “green” homes. She’s been selling real estate for almost two years.

Q. If a property is a “green home” what does that mean?

A. Green building means improving the way that your home uses water, energy and materials that minimize the impact on your health and the environment. Decisions to be green impact both the way your home is built and the way it will be lived in. Both real estate and building experts can help you make decisions that are sustainable for the environment and your finances. These decisions are an investment in the planet and your wallet.

What should a buyer look for?

Look for certifications that the builder is environmentally responsible. The U.S. Green Building Council issues a LEED certification. If your builder is certified by an organization such as the Forest Stewardship Council, Earthcraft or the Rainforest Alliance, you’ll know they have followed strict standards.

What materials will be used in a green house?

Look for companies that reuse materials. … Some builders take salvageable materials from older homes and incorporate them into the design of new homes. Use the blue Energy Star, the government symbol for energy efficiency in appliances, systems and materials, as your guide for energy savings. Check for insulation, high-performance windows, low-consumption heating and cooling systems. … Although some of these materials might be more expensive, over time you’ll save money in lower energy costs.
