University of Florida president J. Bernard Machen wants to cut the number of places alcohol is sold at the annual football game against Georgia in Jacksonville. The Florida Times-Union reported Machen sent a letter earlier this week to Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton requesting more city investment in curbing binge drinking at the game once popularly known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. The two longtime football rivals will meet Oct. 31 in Jacksonville.

Nashville, Tenn. — Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, whose most noted drive was the final one of the 2000 Super Bowl, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head Saturday afternoon in a downtown condominium. Police said a woman also was shot dead. McNair was 36 and played 13 seasons before retiring in April 2008. Police spokesman Don Aaron said officials tentatively identified the woman, but did not release her name. He confirmed she wasn't McNair's wife, Mechelle. He said authorities were still investigating the shootings and that no suspects were in custody.

HONOLULU (AP) — Former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang, one of the most prolific passers in college football history, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and released without charges pending further investigation. The 27-year-old Chang was arrested at his Mililani home Thursday after a woman alleged her camera was taken away from her while she was filming a brawl last month in the Pearlridge area. A man, whom Honolulu police say was Chang, told the woman to stop filming the fight. A struggle ensued and the suspect allegedly took the camera and threw it on the roof of a nearby building.

Washington — Center fielder Jordan Schafer had to come out of a game for Gwinnett on Friday night in the fifth inning with a sore wrist, the same wrist that has bothered him since he injured it swinging in the Braves' home opener April 10. Schafer recently took two weeks off to rest it after the Braves sent him down to Gwinnett, but there is cause for concern now that he could be out for an extended period of time. He was scheduled to see a doctor early next week.

Washington — In his sixth major-league start, Tommy Hanson learned about bad luck. The pitcher who won when no one else for the Braves could against the Red Sox and Yankees had to settle for a no-decision in a 5-3 loss Saturday after seven dominant innings went for naught against the Nationals. Hanson extended his scoreless streak to 26 innings before Adam Dunn sent a fastball into the second deck for his 300th career homer. Hanson was in control for the other 104 of his 105 pitches in seven three-hit innings.

Washington— Jeff Francoeur was out of the Braves' lineup Saturday afternoon, largely by default. With Matt Diaz and Garret Anderson both swinging hot bats, and Francoeur having a chilly week at the plate, Francoeur got the day off despite the Braves' facing a left-hander, John Lannan. The left-handed hitting Anderson, who went 2-for-4 on Saturday, has hit safely in 19 of his past 22 games, going 28-for-78 (.359) since June 8. He homered pinch-hitting for Francoeur on Thursday.

The Peachtree Road Race turned 40 on Saturday, entering middle age on just the right note. No longer young, but stubbornly refusing to act its age, the world's largest 10K race threw a lollapalooza of a Fourth of July party. The weather was perfect. The mood was light. And the 55,000 guests once more proved it possible to run and revel at the same time. At 40, the Peachtree has put on a little weight. It has slowed down some while evolving from strictly a test of speed and endurance to, "an amazing, amorphous event," as race emcee Creigh Kelley called it this year.

Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva are off the free-agent board already. By the time the holiday weekend has ended they'll probably have company. Even in what has been described as "down" free-agent market, there is bound to be plenty of movement. While the Hawks have players of their own to deal with, most notably unrestricted free agents Mike Bibby, Zaza Pachulia and Flip Murray and restricted free agents Josh Childress and Marvin Williams, they also have to scan every aisle in this buyer's market and make sure they don't leave any bargains on the showroom floor without at least weighing the pros and cons.

Washington, D.C.- The Braves put struggling second baseman Kelly Johnson on the disabled list Friday with tendinitis in his right wrist and called up Brooks Conrad from Class AAA Gwinnett. Johnson had been scuffling at the plate for about a month before being replaced by Martin Prado as the starting second baseman on Wednesday night. Johnson had hit .168 with no home runs and five RBIs in his previous 28 games. His average is down to .214 for the season. Johnson had multiple cortisone shots and did not accompany the Braves to Washington.

WASHINGTON - Brooks Conrad didn't know any better. He didn't know the Braves were supposed to fall flat against the Nationals, like they often do, and kill whatever momentum they had built in a sweep against the Phillies. So Conrad, who was called up from Class AAA Gwinnett on Friday, launched a three-run pinch-hit home run in his first at-bat as a Brave for the winning blow in a 9-8 win over the Nationals.

Ivory Latta is back. The Dream signed one of its original members Friday, one month after they waived the point guard right before the start of the season. To make room for her, the Dream waived point guard Nikki Teasley, who had started all 10 previous games this season. Latta made her debut in a 72-65 win over the Washington Mystics in front of an announced crowd of 5,456 at Philips Arena. Latta was greeted with a loud ovation during pregame introductions and when she entered the game with 1:03 left in the first half. She would only play that one minute. She didn't have to play more.

Before the Braves flew to Washington late Thursday, they had already soared past Philadelphia. Garret Anderson's two-run homer in a three-run eighth inning sealed a 5-2 win against the Phillies and gave the Braves a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champions. Not to mention a jolt of positive energy that ran through the dugout and clubhouse and might just have been enough to start their charter jet.

Tommy Hanson's resounding first month in the majors was rewarded Thursday when the Braves pitcher was named National League Rookie of the Month for June. He finished 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA and a .222 opponents' average in five starts -- his first five major-league games -- including wins against Boston and the New York Yankees in his past two. "I definitely didn't expect to come up here and do this," said Hanson, whose current streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings is the longest by a Braves rookie starter since Pete Smith's 20-inning streak in 1988.

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox went out to the bullpen beyond right field to watch Tim Hudson's 90-pitch session Thursday afternoon and came back impressed. "He's ready to go," Cox said of Hudson, who is 10 months into what is typically a 12-month rehabilitation from ligament-transplant elbow surgery. "He's really come along. He's got major-league stuff right now, his normal stuff." But Cox quickly added that the Braves will not rush the timetable on Hudson's return, which is scheduled for mid- to late-August. The next step is facing hitters, which Hudson is set to do next week when he throws batting practice while the Braves are in Chicago to face the Cubs.
