Barack Obama has proposed a wide variety of initiatives that would affect U.S. businesses. Here is a snapshot:
Taxes: Obama promised to eliminate capital gains taxes on small companies and start-up firms. Owners of small companies, meanwhile, could also be affected by his promise to raise taxes on families earning more than $250,000.
Banking: Obama supports a credit card “bill of rights” that would limit the ability of credit card issuers to unilaterally impose new fees and other terms, and supports a measure that would allow bankruptcy judges to alter mortgages.
Climate change: Obama and a more-Democratic Congress are likely to impose a surcharge on greenhouse gas emissions, analysts said.
Autos: Obama expressed support for doubling an Energy Department loan program for automakers to develop fuel-saving technology to $50 billion from $25 billion.
Defense: Obama has promised to not cut the Defense budget for the first 18 months, which could provide a boost to government contractors that rely on military spending.
Health care: Obama has said he would reduce subsidies to insurance companies that offer “Medicare Advantage” plans by about $150 billion over 10 years.
