As one of the cornerstones of Georgia Tech's 2007 recruiting class, which was widely considered one of the best for the Yellow Jackets in years, running back Jonathan Dwyer got off to a solid start as a freshman.
Playing behind two-time ACC rushing leader Tashard Choice, he rushed for 436 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He is expected be the starting "B back," for Tech, meaning he'll be the lone back behind the quarterback. Dwyer spoke with staff writer Matt Winkeljohn.

Q: What have you been able to do since spring practice to learn more about the new offense?
A:: Me and [presumptive starting quarterback] Josh Nesbitt and are at film as much as we can be. Me and Josh and all the B-backs, Quincy Kelly, Luke Cox, [transfer] Anthony Allen and the freshman, Richard Watson ... we're constantly in film trying to learn and refresh.
Q: One of the keys will be for B backs and quarterbacks to work out that, "ride and decide" deal, where the quarterback puts the ball in the back's gut and keeps it there while you both run and read the defense. How does that work?
A: It's all on feel. He has to read the defense first, and I have to read the defense to decide how to track.
Q: Is there any verbal communication there as the QB decides whether to keep or give?
A: There is no verbal communication unless the coach tells us to give or pull it. If it gets to a certain point and he's undecided, he's automatically supposed to give it. Most of the time I just take it, and go with it.
Q: Do you have to read the defense more than before?
A: I'd say we make less reads now than I did in last year's offense. It's less information.
Q: Who are a couple of the most underrated players on offense?
A: [A back] Roddy Jones [who redshirted last season] and our receiving corps, especially [freshman] Tyler Melton. He was supposed to come in with my class [2007], but he tore his ACL in high school. He's surprised a lot of people. Those two are probably the most underrated, and Josh is going to be able to show what athletic ability he has.
