UGA’s miracle stuff of legends

Terence Moore

You can rank them in any order that you wish, but 1a, 1b, and 1c works nicely, thank you. Whatever the case, the greatest miracles in local sports history were those Braves leaping out of nowhere to begin their worst-to-first journey in 1991 and the Dirty Birds flying all the way to the Super Bowl seven years later.

We’re in the midst of the third one, and if it continues a while, it will slide ahead of the other two. After all, that was a reeling Georgia basketball team that just spent four days going from joining Auburn with the worst record in the SEC to watching its coach sit just shy of losing his job to experiencing a tornado to having one of its bus drivers suffer a heart attack to tournament champions to dribbling on Thursday in March Madness.

“This is pretty awesome,” said Mark Lemke, who is qualified to speak on the subject. He was the spark plug of a second baseman for those ‘91 Braves who kept shocking reality. Before long, they finished just a key hit shy of a world championship in a classic Game 7.

Which begs the question: When you’re among those Braves — or, in this case, these Bulldogs — at one point do you know you’re living a miracle?

“Geez, that’s a great question,” Lemke said, pausing, before pausing some more. “I really don’t think you know. We were just happy at that time to be even contending. It’s like, ‘Nobody expected us to be here, so let’s just go with it.’ And then all of a sudden you start thinking to yourself after a big play, or maybe a big shot in Georgia’s case, ‘You know what? Maybe we can win this thing.’ I don’t know if the Georgia club is feeling that same way or not.”

The Bulldogs haven’t time for such feelings. First, that tornado forced the SEC tournament from the Georgia Dome to Georgia Tech’s Alexander Memorial Coliseum. Then the Bulldogs faced three games in two days, including a couple on Saturday before they played and won Sunday’s championship game.

Then Georgia left Tuesday for Washington, D.C., to prepare for its first-round game in the NCAA tournament on Thursday against Xavier. So the Bulldogs’ miracle didn’t evolve over weeks and months. That’s in contrast to the 1998 Falcons who used every bit of their season to end decades of joining the New Orleans Saints and the Cardinals (Chicago, St. Louis and Arizona) as the NFL’s joke franchises.

Even so, Terance Mathis, a key wide receiver for those Dirty Birds, sounded like Lemke on the subject of when you sense a miracle around you.

“The kicker for us is that we never looked at what we were doing as being a miracle, because if you ask every guy on our team, after a while, we expected to win,” said Mathis, whose Falcons won 11 straight near the end of that season, compared to the franchise’s total of just 10 victories during the two previous seasons.

Added Mathis, “We were loose. We were having a good time. It got to a point where nobody else expected us to win, so there was no pressure on us. We just went out and played football. The thing that held us was that we stayed together. It was just a numbing feeling. Maybe it was after we beat Minnesota [for the NFC championship] that we looked at each other and said, ‘Wow. We just won 11 in a row!’ “

Georgia would settle for enough in a row to reach the Sweet 16, or maybe the Elite Eight, or who really knows?

Mathis chuckled, saying, “My advice to Georgia is to do everything you’ve been doing, keep it the same, don’t change. Just play hard.” Added Lemke, “In this situation, you have to remember that you’ve gotten there for a reason. I would just keep believing in yourself and not really start thinking about the moment. Although I have to admit that, after we got off the plane after finishing Game 7 [of the NLCS] in Pittsburgh, we weren’t in Atlanta, we were in Minnesota for the World Series. That was kind of a shock.”

Kind of like everything surrounding Georgia hoops right now.

This team will always be remembered for what they have already accomplished and for whatever they are able to accomplish in the NCAA tournament. Forty years from now, whoever has assumed the role that Coach MacGill has now ( as UGA Sports Historian ) will be talking about this team.

TDone:

Tech was a 3 seed in 2004 when they were embarassed by UConn. I believe they were ranked #3 in the nation when they lost to the Dawgs in December. Making the national finals, while somewhat improbable, was by no means a “miracle,” as the other are/were.

Ms. “Ha HA UGAG Sucks” you, like no one else, definitely deserve a punch in the nose even though you are undoubtedly a woman (not a lady). I can tell you are female because of your effeminate keystrokes, as well as the lacking substance or content.

Luck has nothing to do with any accomplishment by any Bulldog team. Determination, Tenacity, WILL. These are more apt words to describe what these young men have accomplished. They transcended sport, and Felton is where he needs to be — HOME is UGA!

I have, and will always, consider myself fortunate to have attended, and graduated from the flagship institution of this state — the oldest state charted school in the nation, 1785! I am UGA. And yes, it is great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

Go Dawgs!

A three seed making the finals? And a Bug wants to compare that to what Georgia just accomplished? rolls eyes Yeah, because three seeds never make the Terrific Two… gotta be a miracle.

TDone, I suggest you gain a little something called perspective dude. Either that, or seriously brush up on your sports vocabulary. Miracle is reserved for college kids beating a professional Soviet hockey team in the first game of the medal round in the Olympics. Miracle is reserved for the 2003 Marlins beating the mighty Yankees. Miracle is reserved for Villanova beating the Georgetown juggernaut or NC State beating Phi Slamma Jamma. Miracle is reserved for an undermanned last place team, seemingly rudderless winning four games in three days after a Wrath of God weather event, winning two of those games within seven hours of each other, to earn a place in the Dance the absolutely only way possible: by winning an automatic bid as SEC Tournament Champions (yes, Tennessee fans, I do recognize that it is different than SEC Champions, but hey, we’re doing a lot of sharing of titles this year, aren’t we?).

That is what the word miracle is reserved for when regarding sports.

A three seed making the final is not miraculous.

Idiot.

This story goes way beyond Athens. It’s a story of guts and determination. A story that gives hope to every kid out here who dreams big. What these kids did was just awe inspiring. My hats off to them and their coach.

If they win more games the legend will grow, but they are already champions and no one can take that away from them, ever.

Amazing performances like this one are rare and are what makes sports special. This team consisted of average athletes having a below average season. They had little support from fans and none from Adams and his lacky, Evans. The players and Coach Felton refused to give up, and they played above their ability level. I am not a basketball fan, but I watched Georgia’s last three games. I put their performance on the same level as that of the Braves against the Pirates and UGA world series win in 1990. I wish the players and Coach Felton the best in the NCAA tournament.

Sorry chris, didn’t mean to stoop to your level…..you just make it so easy. Anyway, I’m not even a basketball fan but am proud of them just the same. Some of you tech folks, and yes, I know some Ga people do the same thing, just can’t stand it when something good happens to the dawgs. And yeah, I know it’s spelled “dogs”, but that just wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture. Go DAWGS and congratulations on a very good SEC comeback.

I cannot say it is a miracle, but the Falcons NEVER having back to back winning seasons…2nd thought, that would be Pathetic for the Falcons.

It may be miraculous if you took the bet and lost in Vegas that a start-up franchise that played 40+ seasons would not post 9+ wins in two consecutive seasons.

The Madness March through Atlanta

Four in four and two in one That was the challenge to be done No second chances – lose and leave But the Seniors told them to believe

A dish from Butler set that first stage As Bliss’ Bank drew Rebel rage Then Swansey’s Swish dropped through the net The Cats erased, Dawgs weren’t done yet

Wood worked his magic on Saturday night And took away their Bulldog bite By notching three, the Dawgs earned their chance At the conference title and a “date for the dance”

As he did all season, ‘Yata lead And willed the Dawgs to stay ahead With the heart of a lion, he assumed at his station A study for all in determination

And as Jeremy made Arkansas pay the price By stealing their passes to the crowd’s sheer delight
It was Brewer providing a needed spell While Coach Felton smiled watching his Bulldogs gel

With Humphrey’s trey giving room to breathe Jackson’s slam caused the Hogs to grieve Attended by “family and friends” on the list Selection Sunday in Georgia received a new twist

From worst to first in a four day span With tornado-like fury in Atlanta land The Bulldog Nation’s roundball team Found resurrection it sure would seem

Oh, and thanks to the Jackets for the use of their place Sure was fun watching Bulldogs dancing on Buzz’s face As they hoisted the crown for 2008 The SEC Champions – isn’t it great!

Not here to down the dawgs. Great 4 in a row. But any team that doesn’t have a winning record in their own conference should not be in the dance. Georgia is not even close to being one of the best 65 teams in the country. The Musketeers will end their streak on Monday and all this baloney will be forgotten about. This was not a miracle. At best a fluke.

Terence, “miracle” is overstating it just a bit, don’t you think? How can you call something a “miracle” when it’s happened before and against stronger competition?

1993 ACC Tournament: Tech comes in as #6 seed and wins it all, including wins over UNC and Duke, both of which ended the season in the top 10.

UGA had a fine run, but they didn’t beat a single ranked team over the weekend. They deserve to be congratulated; this was no doubt a major accomplishment. But take a deep breath and keep some perspective, please.

Tech fans- don’t sweat it. What UGAy pulled off last weekend was luck, pure and simple. It’s a testimony to how weak the SEC is- especially the path UGAy took through the tournament. Tech had the likes of Clemson (5-seed), Duke (2-seed), and UNC (overall #1-seed) still waiting to play them in the ACC tourney. UGAy squeaked through by beating Ole Miss (who missed the madness), Kentucky (11-seed), and Arkansas (9-seed). They picked off the bottom of the barrel- anyone with any kind of perspective can see this isn’t a miracle, no matter how sensational the tornado story makes it sound.

Let the obnoxious mutts have their fifteen minutes of fame. Let them bark and howl and spew whatever thoughts come into their tiny little brains. In a little over 24 hours Xavier will breeze through the first round, and the so-called “miracle” will be forgotten.

In the long run, people will remember Tech’s great run in 2004 far more than this year’s faux-miracle. That Tech team was a great example of teamwork. They played an amazing FULL season of basketball, made a good run in the ACC tourney, and did what it took to make it to the national championship game.

People will remember the tornado last weekend, but they’ll quickly forget this UGAy team and their 15 minutes of fame. Go Xavier, and GO JACKETS!

There should not be any conference tourneys at all. I am not a fan of UGA or Tech, so there is no bias here. It is absolute garbage that, after working all season to win a conference title, that a team like Tennessee (I’m not from there, either!)has to play a b.s. conference tourney. Georgia underachieved all year long, and now, because they got hot for a weekend they are in the field of 64? Get your rose-colored glasses off of your face, Bulldog fans. You don’t deserve to be in the field of 64, you know it, and, from reading the AJC, you would be livid if the tables were turned. From the BCS to these conference tourneys, the NCAA continues to be all about one thing…..the money! Fairness is not a consideration.

Hey Vince for prez you forgot the rest of the story….apparently there were some GTechies playing in the D&D tournament when some UGA fans walked by. The UGA fans then walked away with their beautiful co-eds while Techies went back to their RC Cola and watching Attack of the Show hoping to cop a feel off the tv for Olivia Munn.

Moral to the story: UGA owns Tech… that is all.

Let’s not compare UGA’s #6 seed in ‘08 with Tech’s #6 seed in ‘93. Goergia was the #6 from the EAST this year, meaning that they were the #11/#12 seed OVERALL in their conference tourney. Tech was the #6 overall ACC seed in ‘93, roughly equivalent to being a #3 divisional seed in the SEC. And Tom…I’m really not surprised that someone who’s too stupid to understand how the posting thing works is also too stupid to come up with anything better than the lameass “UGAy” insult. That’s sooooooooooo original. Genius.

Georgia State’s conference tourney championship and win as an 11 seed in the NCAA Tourney in 2001. A nice run for Lefty’s team. (also beat UGA that year, I beleive).

C’mon Peeps,

Dude, this is just pure folly for me. On the other hand, you must live your life vicariously through the Muttland Athletic Department. So just because that is your lot in life, please don’t as in the case with most Muttlanders, have an overinflated view of yourself. I leave you with the words of the musical genius, Stevie Wonder, who describes your ilk and you to the “nth” degree.

You Haven’t Done Nothing

We are amazed but not amused by all the things you say That you’ll do. Though much concerned but not involved With decisions that are made by you.

But we are sick and tired of hearing your song Tellin’ how you are gonna change right from wrong ‘Cause if you really want to hear our views: You haven’t done nothin’

It’s not to cool to be ridiculed but you brought this up On yourself. The world is tired of pacifiers We want the truth and nothing else yeah.

And we are sick and tired of hearing your song …

Jackson five join along with me Sing: Doo doo wab Hey hey hey Doo doo wab waw waw waw waw doo doo dab Naw naw naw doo doo wab go go go Doo doo wab bum bum bum doo doo wab

He would not care to wake up to the night-mare That’s becomin’ real life but when mislead Who knows a person’s mind can turn as cold as ice - um hum

Why do you keep on makin’ us hear your song

Tellin’ us how you are changin right from wrong ‘Cause if your really want to hear our views: You haven’t done nothin’ yeah.

Doo doo wab waw waw waw doo doo dab …

How can you compare this to the Braves worst to first? The Dawgs won 4 in a row all agaist unranked opponents. Oh, that’s right, you can compare this because you’re a racist black man and Felton is a black coach. Once again your racist articles come flying out your as$ like diarrhea after eating Krystal’s. Obama has an new opening on his spiritual advisor team, please go join him.

If the Dawgs go on to win the NCAA Tournament, becoming National Champs, then we will witness a miracle. Otherwise, shut your hole. I’m a Uga Alumnus, and I’m happy, but this is spinning way out of control.

Uhhhhh, right. Sorry bud, but I have a fairly firm grasp on what constitutes the difference between reality and passion for sport. But thanks for assuming otherwise. That doesn’t change the fact that every blog about the Dawgs you are the first one whining “why no tech love?” and “the Dawgs suck” tear drop, snivel…

Until next time “Wonder boy”…

I see that the AJ-C has demoted Chipper Towers for his BS - while other writers write of the success of UGA Men’s Basketball and Coach Dennis Felton specifically.

Dennis Felton Memorial Coliseum at Historic Gaines-Bliss Court.

Florida State was bounced by Akron Zits 65-60 in the NIT Tournament while Ole Miss and Florida won.

Georgia Tech did not win 3 games at home in a row all season long.

12:20 p.m. tomorrow afternoon on TV, yeah right. They are not going to televise this men’s basketball NCAA Tournament game with Georgia at Xavier in Washington D.C. They never televise these games. They bounce back and forth from one game to another during every telecast. It is what is maddening about March Madness. This game is on Georgetown’s Home Floor. 77 of 92 times the Number 14 seed in The NCAA Men’s Tournament faced the Number 3 seed, the Number 3 seed has prevailed. UGA No. 14 seed and Xavier No. 3 seed.

UGA VI is selected as the NCAA Tournament Top Mascot Number 1 Mascot. Mississippi State’s bulldog was selected number 2.

If The Georgia Bulldogs are not The 2008 SEC Tournament Champions Georgia Bulldogs, what is this then, pray tell ?

2008 SEC Tournament Champions Georgia Bulldogs find that the Georgia Institute of Technology has renamed its leaky roof, rinky-dink, itty-bitty tet gym to Dennis Felton Memorial Coliseum at Historic Gaines-Bliss Court.

Kentucky is 100-44 in NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for The SEC. Georgia is 7-9. Tennessee vols are 11-16. Georgia Tech was 1-1 for The SEC (1960.) Mississippi State is 10-8. Arkansas is 18-10. Vanderbilt is 9-10. That’s all 6 SEC teams in the Men’s Basketball NCAA Tournament 2008. Did I mention there are but 4 ACC teams, as I directly 100 percent guaranteed all basketball season long in every blog ?

Georgia Tech is 15-17. Georgia is 17-16.

This is Georgia’s 14th game of the season against an NCAA Tournament Foe. Georgia has Won 4 of these games, standing at 4-9.

We beat Arkansas earlier in the season, and of course, beat Arkansas, Kentucky and Mississippi State to Win The SEC Championship on Tech’s lousy home court in the last 3 consecutive games (all NCAA Tournament Teams.)

We also beat the crap out of Georgia Tech 79-72. But, Chipper Towers said neither team was any good and he GUARANTEED that Georgia would NOT make the NIT or NCAA Tournament.

I took exception to his BS, in case he has forgotten.

Georgia Tech also has played 14 games against teams in the NCAA Tournament this season. Georgia Tech won two (2), half of Georgia’s Number.

2-12 Georgia Tech vs. NCAA Tournament teams 2008.

4-9 Georgia Bulldogs vs. NCAA Tournament teams 2008.

6 SEC Teams made the NCAA Tournament. 4 from the stinky ACC made it. Florida State has already lost in the NIT Tournament, while Ole Miss and Florida both won.

Who is the better team Chipper Towers 2008 ?

Georgia ?

Or

Georgia Tech ?

Georgia Tech beat Climpson Farmers and Notre Shame, and that is it all season long.

Georgia this season beat Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Arkansas twice, Alabama, South Carolina, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Kentucky.

Georgia enjoyed its 3rd season in which it either won the SEC regular season Championship or the SEC Tournament Championship.

Georgia Tech has accomplished either of these feats a grand total of one season, 1938.

Cremins’ Court. What a joke. You ran that guy out of town on a rail.

Dennis Felton Memorial Coliseum at Historic Sundiata Gaines-Dave Bliss Court.

Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia are the only 3 SEC schools to send both their Men and Women to The NCAA March Madness Big Dance.

SEC Tournament Champions with 9 Scholarship Players on Tech’s Home Court where UGA has now Won 11 games.

This is our 2nd SEC Tournament Championship to go along with our 1 regular Season SEC Championship. 3 different seasons, 1983, 1990 and 2008.

And, 3 SEC Tournament MVPs Dominique Wilkins, Vern Fleming, and Sundiata Gaines.

Dave Bliss is SEC Scholar Athlete of The Year.

4 games, 3 days, 2 overtimes, and 1 Champion.

QUOTE :

“I think he’d been blackballed a little bit,” says Pearl’s former assistant, Rick Herdes, now the head coach at Southern Indiana. “I think it had a lot to do with the stigma from the Illinois situation. But he was not going to let that keep him down.”

“The Illinois situation” was one of the more famous cases in NCAA history, leading to an incredibly obstinate resentment from Illini fans toward Pearl that lingers to this day. Put it this way: Twenty years from now you won’t find many Illinois backers who still actively hate Eric Gordon, but there are plenty who still hold Pearl’s actions in the late 1980s against him.

Locked in a bitter recruiting struggle with Illinois for Chicago McDonald’s All-American Deon Thomas, Bruce Pearl — then an assistant under Davis at Iowa — began recording conversations with Thomas and taking notes on the alleged assertions of the player and his friends that the Illini were offering him cash and a car to sign with them. Thomas eventually signed with Illinois and became the school’s all-time leading scorer but ultimately at great cost to everyone involved.

Bruce Pearl did not act as a lone vigilante; he ran everything by Davis and the Iowa athletic administration. Yet when the NCAA investigated and Illinois was charged with major violations, the backlash fell directly on Pearl. His name became anathema in the state of Illinois, where he was accused of unethical behavior.

On Nov. 7, 1990, the NCAA committee on infractions found Illinois guilty of major infractions. As a repeat violator from recent football infractions, it was hit with a one-year ban from postseason play, among other penalties. Some of the infractions related directly to information provided by Pearl, some did not. But the committee did not find the Illini guilty of the most serious charges levied by its enforcement staff via the information it received from Pearl.

“[The NCAA] wound up not having a finding,” Pearl says.

In the minds of some, Bruce Pearl was no longer innocent, either. Illinois went down, but took a pound of its accuser’s flesh with it. Evansville and Division II became the place to start anew.

Bruce Pearl, SNITCH, and Phil Fulmer SNITCH, both coaching Tennessee vols.

How fitting.

To hear the news reports in Georgia, hell just read the numb skull TM piece above. The Bulldogs are basically National Champions to hear them say…. Even with the SEC wins, YEAH ALL LUCK NO MIRACLES, they still are not even a 500 team in the SEC. OMG GEORGIA get a grip. The only miracle will be if YOU can muster anything to even get close much less past Xavier today. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Interesting fact - UGA did not play one ranked team in their 4 games in the SEC tourney…so I cannot consider it a miracle just good luck! Georgia and Kentucky are both gone on the first day losing to Xaiver and Marquette respectively…
