Summer internships at the AJC

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM INTERNS:

Can I receive college credit?
Yes, if prearranged by the newspaper and your university.

When does the internship start?
Summer interns generally start the second week of June, but we are flexible on the start date.

What is the pay?
Interns are paid $550 weekly before taxes.

What about housing?
Interns are responsible for locating their own housing but we do offer suggestions and generally have several staffers who are willing to rent out space in their homes to interns for the summer.

Do I need a car?
A car isn't a requirement but a driver's license is. We have a limited number of staff cars available and public transportation is very limited in Atlanta's suburban areas.

Who will be my supervisor?
Each intern will be assigned a supervisor in the department they are assigned to work in. That person will be responsible for the intern's work schedule, assignments and five-week and final performance evaluations.

How many stories will I be expected to write each week?
This varies by department but, in general, our interns are kept very busy with a variety of reporting and writing challenges.

Will I have a mentor?
Yes, each intern is assigned a staff mentor who is a non-supervisor. This person acts as a support system for the intern.
