New York — Georgia's Bob Barr took his nascent bid for the White House national Wednesday when he appeared on the popular political satire show "The Colbert Report."

Barr survived and gave as good as he got on the show that skewers blow-dried political commentators.

Taped live in New York, Barr touted his nomination to be the Libertarian Party's standard-bearer for president with host Stephen Colbert on the Comedy Central hit show.

The interview airs at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on Comedy Central and repeats at 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Colbert has carved quite a niche in the world of political commentary. Colbert himself plays a character by the same name on his show, and the character is a right-wing blowhard. Barr got a good taste Wednesday.

"What's the difference between you and Ralph Nader other than you apparently own a comb?" Colbert asked, referencing the perennial third-party candidate who is running again as an independent.

"And the mustache," the whiskered Barr offered right back.

"Were you afraid the government might make you register that thing?" Colbert asked. "'Cause it's a lady-killer."

The tone was set from the beginning, when Colbert announced Barr would join him, but instead of an image of Barr, a picture of the elephant Babar from children's stories appeared.

"Not Babar, Bob Barr," Colbert said.
