Connector drivers: Expect weekend traffic

Another weekend of traffic torture is in store on the Downtown Connector, this time leveled at northbound travelers and spreading to I-20 drivers.

Crews repaving I-75/I-85 plan to close three outside lanes on the northbound side from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting, according to the state Department of Transportation.

That should restrict traffic to the HOV and inside lanes from just south of I-20 to 10th Street. Closing the outer lanes also means closing the ramps.

Two exceptions: The Fulton Street on ramp and the Freedom Parkway off ramp will remain open.

For those determined to use the Connector to get to downtown events this weekend, hypothetically that exit and entry point are options.

"I highly recommend folks not doing that," said Crystal Paulk-Buchanan, a DOT spokeswoman.

If drivers who would normally use the eight closed ramps decide to pour onto those two ramps, the results will not be pretty.

In addition to the ramps to be closed, the ramp from I-20 heading northbound onto the Connector is slated to have only one lane open instead of two, so DOT expects congestion to back up onto I-20 as well.

The ramp from I-20 onto the southbound Connector should be fine.

CONNECTOR RAMPS TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND:

Off-ramp to Edgewood Avenue

Off-ramp to Pine/Peachtree Street

Off-ramp to Spring Street

Off-ramp to 10th Street

On-ramp from Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive

On-ramp from Fort St./John Wesley Dobbs Avenue

On-ramp from Freedom Parkway

On-ramp from Spring Street
