BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: BROOKWOOD 12, EAST COWETA 2: Broncos rally, storm ahead
Moving on: Replaying game didn't slow down Brookwood, which will face North Cobb in semifinals.

Three batters into Thursday's Game 2 of Brookwood's Class AAAAA quarterfinal series —- after East Coweta's Felton James belted a two-run homer off Brookwood starter Matt Adams —- it was easy to wonder whether having to replay the game from scratch had upset the Broncos' mojo.

They'd seen a four-run lead wiped out by a weather postponement Tuesday and had to make an extra trip to Sharpsburg to finish the series.

It didn't take long, though, for the Broncos to remove any doubts about how this one would go.

Adams retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced, snuffing East Coweta's hopes of extending the series as Brookwood (30-3) completed the sweep with a 12-2 win in six innings. The Broncos will host North Cobb on Monday in the state semifinals.

Brookwood tied the score on Ronnie Freeman's second-inning, two-run homer off East Coweta starter Darius Rhodes. The Broncos got at least two runs in each of the last five innings to win going away.

Rhodes, who started the aborted second game Tuesday and allowed four runs in one inning, got a second chance Thursday and was pasted for seven runs on eight hits.

"We felt like we could come back and do some things," said Freeman, who had a homer from Tuesday night wiped out by the postponement but roped a Rhodes curveball over the center-field fence to get it back. "We feel like we've got a good enough offense to take it all the way."

Brookwood, facing East Coweta (16-16) in the playoffs for the second straight year, pounded out 29 hits in the two games. Chase Hawkins went 4-for-4 Thursday, and Ross Heffley added three hits to finish with eight in the two-game series, rendering the extra bus ride a mere inconvenience.

"It was worth it," Brookwood coach Rick Howard said. "I was real happy with Matt. He gave up the home run early and then made the adjustments and threw really well."

Adams finished with a three-hitter, striking out six and improving to 7-0.

"I just had to calm down," Adams said. "I just tried to throw strikes and keep us in the game. I knew we were going to score runs."
