2 die in Riverdale fire

Two people were found dead early Tuesday afternoon after a fire consumed their Riverdale duplex.

It’s not yet known what started the blaze, at 5606 Windwood Road, or how exactly the victims — one male, one female — died, said Clayton County Fire Department spokesman Landry Merkison.

An eyewitness told firefighters he heard the man screaming for help from the duplex’s second story window. Merkison said the witness kicked in the door and located the male victim passed out on the stairwell.

“He started to pull him out, but the smoke and heat just overwhelmed him,” Merkison said.

Firefighters found the female victim’s body on the second floor. No foul play is suspected in the deaths.

The names of the victims had not been released late Tuesday.
