Children's Healthcare of Atlanta will open a $17.6 million autism center next month.

The Marcus Autism Center will occupy a 90,000-square-foot building on Briarcliff Road. The funding comes from a mix of donor support, the health care system's endowment, government aid and financial support from Atlanta businessman Bernie Marcus.

The center expects to serve 4,400 patients a year, officials said.

Children's Healthcare plans to collaborate with Emory University, Georgia Tech and other academic and community-based organizations that serve children with autism.

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the country, with one in 150 children diagnosed nationally, officials said. Children's CEO Donna Hyland said the incidence of autism is even higher in Georgia, affecting one in 136 children.

"We've got a real issue on our hands," Marcus said in a statement. "My wife, Billi, and I recognize the important need for a center that will bring together educators, researchers, the medical community and others."

Services will include programs designed to diagnose, treat and provide support for children with autism.
