DEKALB COUNTY: GED program a model for jails

State auditors gave their highest rating to the DeKalb County jail's program to help inmates earn their general equivalency diplomas, the sheriff's office announced. A peer review committee reviewed the jail GED program for the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. The committee judged the program "exemplary," saying it could be a model for other jails.

The jail and DeKalb Technical College have offered GED classes at the facility for 15 years. About 2,800 students have received diplomas. "These programs are an integral part of the overall rehabilitative programs of the jail, and eligibility is based upon inmate behavior, conduct and security requirements," Sheriff Thomas Brown said.
