Dash of passion helps in cooking, on links

Local chef Marvin Woods, who starred in the Turner South cooking show "Home Plate," wore his trademark bandana in another hot, pressurized setting recently: the golf course.

He took up the sport in Florida while cooking at a Starwood Resort that featured a golf course. He played every day the restaurant was closed. Based in Vinings, he's still cooking at Woods on South, his restaurant in Charlotte, and busy with charity and corporate events. Soon he'll roll out a line of 16 non-sodium, all natural spices and sauces.

At Heritage Golf Club in Tucker, Woods showed his golf skills (he breaks 100) aren't up to his kitchen prowess. Between nines, he drew from both of his worlds to offer these tips to would-be masters of the grill or the green:

1. "You've got to have a steady hand, definitely when you are cutting, or there will be bloodshed. In golf, that's the way to score."

2. "Stay focused. Whether you're putting or chipping, or in cooking, if you don't focus, something's going to burn."

3. "One of the keys with golf is the more you play, the better you get. The more you cook, the better you get at it, too."

4. "You've got to be comfortable. If you don't play a lot, or don't cook a lot, you're going to second-guess yourself. Too much of this, not enough of that — you have to have a comfort level to enjoy it."

5. "Be passionate about it, even if you're not that good, and keep your expectations real. I expect a lot when I cook. But on the course, I know I'll never be a PGA Tour pro. I'll never play for money. I just enjoy it."
