Lifestyle Community: Del Webb at Lake Oconee
Couple makes smart move back to Georgia
For the AJC

Donald Freund and his wife, Carol, were familiar with active adult developments, having lived in Sun City Hilton Head in South Carolina. But the new Del Webb at Lake Oconee brought them closer to their children and grandchildren, who live in Georgia. He chatted about their home.

Donald Freund and his wife, Carol, love the active adult community at the new Del Webb at Lake Oconee.
Getting there
Take I-20 East from Atlanta to Exit 130 (Ga. 44). Turn right and drive about 5 miles. Turn right onto West Lake Road. The community is on the left.
Q. Why did you want to get back to Georgia?
A. We lived in Georgia for 22 years. We always enjoyed the lakes. We watched Lake Oconee being built. When we heard that this was available up here, I didn’t think we did anything else but get in the car. We looked the area over, and it was wonderful. We have children in Atlanta, and we have children in Savannah and children in middle Georgia. Right now we’re in between them and we get to see the grandchildren a little more.
What intrigued you about the plans for the Del Webb community?
The things that we liked, of course, is they have the boat access to the lake and boat storage. At the time, they were telling us about a huge amenities center that’s being built. That’s come into realization now. It’s open and it’s wonderful.
What do you enjoy doing there?
Almost any type of cards. We have a billiard room. There’s a fantastic workout room, which I just got back from. Normally we’re there, I would say, at least five times a week. We exclude Sunday normally because we’re playing golf. One of the nice assets of being in this location is there’s golf courses spread all the way around us. I kind of head that up and look for different places and different specials so we can try out the courses.
Did you also buy a boat?
It didn’t take us long, and we bought one. We bought a 22-foot pontoon boat. We can pull the grandkids on their rafts and tubes. Also, we use it for fishing and partying. They had a golf tournament at Great Waters (a Reynolds Plantation course) and we went down there on the boat and saw some of the golf tournament.
Did you know any of your neighbors before moving in?
We didn’t know anybody, but it didn’t take long to know a bunch of people. On Friday afternoons we have a social hour, and I think just about everybody turns out for that. We have that for a little while, maybe an hour and a half, then we all head out to a restaurant to have dinner. There are no strangers here.
