Citing its record fuel costs, Delta Air Lines plans to begin charging customers an extra $25 for checking a second bag.
The new charge, which takes effect May 1, follows moves by United Airlines and other carriers to add similar fees for transporting a second piece of luggage, which previously has been included in the price of the ticket.

"The change is due to rising fuel costs and ... the changing competitive environment we face today," Delta spokesman Kent Landers said Monday. "This is in line with general industry practices."
United and US Airways announced similar fees last month, to take effect in May. United, which is similar in size to Delta, estimated that its fee will generate about $100 million in cost savings per year, according to the Associated Press.
Chief Executive Officer Richard Anderson disclosed the new fee Friday, in a recorded weekly update to employees.
Landers declined to say how much money Delta expects to generate from the new fee. He said the fee will not apply to first-class or business-class customers or members of its frequent-flier program who log at least 25,000 qualifying miles of travel per year. Those travelers will still be able to check up to three bags without extra fees, said Landers.

I agree with posters who think that this will cause HUGE problems with increased numbers of carryon bags. The airlines should be dealing with fuel costs by charging customers based on weight - the customer's weight and the baggage weight. Everyone should get an allowance of 250lbs. Anything over that and you pay. I'm getting ripped off as I'm below 130 lbs and my kids are 40 and 60 lbs each. Why should I be subsidizing the fuel costs for the increasing number of lard butts who live in America?

If oil prices come down, will these "fees charged to recoup fuel expenses" go away? I think not. British Airways last year got fined for price fixing for "fuel surcharges" (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,291699,00.html).
If the airlines really want to be fair, they should make all the fatties who take up two seats PAY FOR TWO SEATS.

I KNOW THAT AIRLINES HAVE HIGH FUEL PRICES AND OTHER OVEREAD COSTS THAT
MAKE THEM NEED TO CHARGE MORE FOR THEIR SERVICES. IT IS BETTER TO ADD IT INTO THE TICKET PRICE AS NOT TO DELAY PASSENGER CHECK IN WITH YET ANOTHER THING TO PAY FOR OR COMPLETE BEFORE YOU FLY. NOW CONSUMERS WILL HAVE TO STAND IN LINE AND SPEND MORE OF OUR PRECIOUS TIME AS WELL AS THE ALREADY BURDENDED AIRLINE EMPLOYEE TIME AND PAY FOR EXTRA BAGS.
COME ON FOLKS, IF TIME IS MONEY ALL AROUND. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE ??
LONGER DELAYED LINES ?? USING CREDIT CARDS TO MAKE TRANSACTIONS ??
I CAN TELL YOU I DO NOT LIKE TO HAVE TO TAKE EXTRA BAGS BUT IF I DO I WOULD REALLY NOT LIKE TO HAVE TO STAND IN LINE TO PAY FOR AN EXTRA BAG THAT I USED TO BE ABLE TO TAKE ON FOR NO CHARGE. MAYBE YOU SHOULD HAVE TWO TICKET PRICES ONE FOR CARRY ON ONLY AND ONE FOR CARRY ON PLUS CHECK IN BAGS THIS MAY HELP BUSINESS TRAVELERS WHO TRAVEL LIGHT AND HAVE THOSE WHO ARE DOING MORE EXTENSIVE TRAVEL HAVE THEIR BAGS PAID FOR IN ADVANCE. MAKES SENSE, MAYBE TOO MUCH SENSE !!!
MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR ALL !! YES
