The Brookwood boys cross country team validated its status as the team to beat in Georgia by winning the Carrollton Invitational on Saturday.

The Broncos’ Tyler Anyan finished third (16:13), Doug Kalmbach took fourth (16:15), Michael Sexton was 11th (16:32), Carter Hewitt was 15th (16:37), Zach Robinson was 26th (16:59), and Alex Pena was 36th (17:20).

North Fulton

Cross country: Riverwood’s Bret McDaniel won the girls varsity division of the Marist Double Dip Invitational in 20:08. Teammate Blais Hickey came in 12th (21:20) for the fourth-place Raiders. Soccer: Bill Viger, a head coach of 21 years at Meadowcreek, Wheeler, North Cobb and Sequoyah, and an assistant at Westminster the past three, has become an assistant coach at Blessed Trinity. He’ll work closest with goalkeepers. Cheerleading: Riverwood co-captain Catherine Stein was invited to try out for the National Cheerleading Association’s All-Star Cheer Squad. Selected for the elite squad from among an estimated 100 competitors, Stein will perform at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

DeKalb County

Cross country: Seniors Bsrat Gide and Nolan Schnepf recently finished first and second in leading Tucker to a 30-32 victory against Southwest DeKalb in a meet at the Shamrock course. Gide posted a time of 18 minutes, 14.99 seconds; Schnepf finished in 18:26.60. For the girls, Southwest DeKalb’s Amber Crews was victorious (22:28.32)… . In another meet, Cedar Grove senior Jeffrey Williams recently posted the season’s third-best time at Shamrock (18:09.30). Volleyball: St. Pius went 5-2 at the Block Party at Lovett, with impressive victories against Class AAAA contenders Marist and Whitewater.

Greater Atlanta

Cross country: Westminster’s boys blew away the field in the A-AA-AAA division of the Carrollton Invitational. Held on the same course as the state meet, the Wildcats swept seven of the top eight places. Senior Mohamed Egal finished just .10 of a second behind the winner, Colin Bishoff of Athens Christian… . Grady’s girls team raced to an impressive third-place finish at last weekend’s Altitude Running Invitational, hosted by St. Pius. The Gray Knights had five runners finish in the top 30 in the field of 75 runners, led by junior Kelsey Roth (10th).

Cobb County

Volleyball: Lassiter finally lost its bid for perfection —- sort of. The Trojans remain 19-0 in match play but finally lost a game last Tuesday, falling 23-25 in their first game against Etowah. Cross country: Marietta’s Obiandu Igwe finished fifth at the Carrollton Invitational Saturday with a time of 16:16:57, just 23 seconds off the lead of Charlie Sparks of Columbus.
