The 80-year-old tree that will most likely need to come down to make way for a makeover of downtown Avondale Estates could live on through its offspring.
The water oak that residents tried unsuccessfully to save in a city development plan has germinated so many acorns that, Friday afternoon, volunteers were able to dig up 34 seedlings.
Arborguard, a city-based business that issued one of two reports saying the oak was unsafe and needed to come down regardless of the development, will nurture the saplings until they are able to be replanted in about three years.

Two men in a dark Ford Explorer opened fire on 16-year-old Samuel "Dra" Steward about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday as he and a friend stood on Allgood Road.
