Metro Atlanta, already slogging through its smoggiest week this year, is expected to violate federal air quality standards again today.

Forecasters on Friday issued an orange alert for today. Public health officials advise children and people with heart and lung diseases, including asthma, to minimize outdoor activities when smog levels peak in the afternoon and early evening.

As of Friday afternoon, the region was on track to rack up its fifth consecutive federal violation for ground-level ozone, an ingredient in smog, according to the state Environmental Protection Division's Web site (www.air.dnr.state.ga.us/amp/index.php).

Sandy Springs mayor has cancer

Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos disclosed Friday she has been diagnosed with cancer, but has received an optimistic prognosis.

Galambos, who turns 80 next month, said she plans to continue her public functions and responsibilities while being treated for a form of lymphoma.

"The good news is this is a curable type of the disease," Galambos wrote, in a statement issued by the city. "I will soon begin chemo and will receive treatment over the next four months. The oncologist is very optimistic and advised me that the probability of total remission is very high."

Galambos, elected as the city's first mayor in November 2005, said she may curtail some activities and could ask council members to represent the city on her behalf.

Man still in hospital after near drowning

A 21-year-old man was still hospitalized in critical condition Friday after he nearly drowned at a neighborhood pool in Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett police Sgt. Amanda Cain was sent to 2375 Suwanee Pointe Drive at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to find a 21-year-old man lying on the ground near a community pool. Lloyd Moseley was unconscious and unresponsive, according to Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.

Cain reportedly rolled Moseley onto his back and began performing CPR with the assistance of a neighbor.

Within minutes, Moseley gasped and began breathing on his own, Schiralli said.

Paramedics took Moseley to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition on Friday.

CLAYTON COUNTY

Savannah man charged in robbery

Clayton County police said a Savannah man robbed and bound the manager of a Forest Park business with duct tape Thursday, then tried to elude capture by running back to his motel room, disrobing and pretending to take a shower.

Police said they pulled a wet and naked Jarvis Cassius Reddick, 27, from his room at the Days Inn on Ga. 85. He is charged with armed robbery, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Reddick is being held without bond in Clayton County Jail.

Edwin Nobis, the manager of nearby Carpet Liquidators, identified Reddick as the man who held a gun to his head, demanded money and rifled the store before being scared away by a customer, police said. Police said a female sharing Reddick's room was seen taking a bag from that room and stashing it in another room. A search of that room uncovered the bag, which contained the gun used in the robbery, police said.

Service planned for man shot by deputy

A visitation/wake for a Guatemalan day laborer fatally shot by a DeKalb County sheriff's deputy is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m today.

The wake for Marcial Cax-Puluc will be held at Airport Mortuary Shipping Service, said apprentice funeral director Kyle Adams.

Sheriff's deputy Derrick Yancey told police he shot Cax-Puluc at his Stone Mountain home June 9 because the man shot his wife during an attempted robbery. DeKalb police are investigating the case. Cax-Puluc's body is expected to be shipped back to Guatemala.

Airport Mortuary Shipping Service is at 744 S. Central Ave.; Hapeville, GA 30354; phone, 404-761-2697.

Passenger arrested after flight incident

A drunken passenger on a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Vienna was arrested after apparently trying to start a fire in flight. The 25-year-old passenger, Zoltan Lensky from Slovakia, slapped a flight attendant on the hand, then allegedly tried to set a cabin curtain on fire with a lighter.

A federal air marshal arrested him and turned him over to authorities in Vienna. Lensky's flight left Atlanta Wednesday evening and arrived Thursday morning.
