14 counties hit by storms can get federal aid
May 11 and 12: Bush declares locations disaster areas Friday.

Fourteen Georgia counties affected by the Mother's Day tornadoes will receive federal funds to cover losses, officials said.

President Bush on Friday declared the counties struck by severe storms and tornadoes May 11 and 12 disaster areas and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local money for recovery efforts.

"I am grateful to President Bush and FEMA Director David Paulison for their quick action in offering assistance," said Gov. Sonny Perdue. "This federal disaster declaration will broaden our capability to recover from these devastating storms."

Federal funding is available to Bibb, Carroll, Crawford, Douglas, Emanuel, Glen, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, McIntosh, Treutland, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties.

Georgia qualified for the federal aid because there was more than $10 million in uninsured damages statewide, officials said.

The determination was made based on the dollar amount of uninsured losses in each county, according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA).

Consideration for federal aid goes to counties that suffered uninsured losses of more than $3 per each resident.

Clayton County, where tornadoes destroyed more than 100 homes, was among eight counties hit by storms that were left off the list of areas to receive aid. Others not receiving federal funding included Rockdale, Henry and Newton counties.

State and federal officials will set up mobile aid centers in Bibb and Carroll counties beginning today, GEMA spokesman Buzz Weiss said.

"We plan to hit the ground running," Weiss said. "They'll remain open at least a week. And longer if we still see people coming."

All of the counties covered by Bush's declaration will receive public aid to pay for emergency work and the repair or replacement of public facilities damaged by the severe storms.

Also, affected individuals in the counties of Bibb, Carroll, Douglas, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, McIntosh and Twiggs can apply for federal aid to cover personal losses.

Individual assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs.

Low-cost loans are available to deal with uninsured property losses, and other programs are offered to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

To get help, people should register with FEMA by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or logging onto www.FEMA.gov.
