MIDTOWN
Atlanta Rollergirls Derby
The wheels are hitting the floor for the kickoff event of the Atlanta Rollergirls’ 2009 season in the Yaarab Shrine Center’s auditorium. The evening begins with the Dirty South Derby Girls All-Stars, a conglomeration of top-notch Atlanta skaters, against the Steel City Derby Demons from Pittsburgh. The second bout pits two Atlanta Rollergirls teams against each other, the Apocalypstix and Toxic Shocks. Team rosters are packed with colorful derby alter egos like Lily Punchter, Amelia Scareheart and Queen Loseyateefa. Tickets are available for the individual bouts or as a combo that includes both. The first bout starts at 5 p.m., the second at 7 p.m. Doors open at 4 p.m.
$12 per bout; $20 for both. Ages 3 and younger free. 5 p.m. Feb. 28. Yaarab Shrine Center, 400 Ponce De Leon Ave. N.E., Atlanta. www.atlantarollergirls.com.
DOWNTOWN
Kodo at the Fox Theatre
This troupe of taiko-style drummers hails from Sado Island, Japan. A show finds the performers donning traditional garb while engaging in the bold, theatrical art of drumming. Some numbers feature solo performers, while others showcase what could be described as an old-school Japanese drum line playing in tandem. You might witness a shirtless, headband-wearing performer growling as he pounds. Throw in some other instrumentation (possibly a flute or the three-stringed shamisen), vocals and dance, and you have the essence of a Kodo show.
$15-$65. 8 p.m. March 1. Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. 404-249-6400, www.ticketmaster.com.
MIDTOWN
Oyster Fest at Park Tavern
Park Tavern is the playing field for this celebration of the slimy, shelled delicacy. The restaurant, which overlooks Piedmont Park and has an ace view of the Midtown skyline, will be shilling steamed and fried oysters, burgers and more. (The kitchen is playing it safe and bypassing raw oysters.) Guests can purchase drinks at the full bar while enjoying music from alterna-rock outfit Cracker, best known for its early-’90s hit “Low.” Gringo Star and the Last Waltz Ensemble fill the rest of the bill. The latter replicates tunes made famous by the Band and Bob Dylan. The event is for those 21 and older, and organizers say the ticket price may change at any time.
$10. 1 p.m. Feb. 28. Park Tavern, 500 10th St. N.E., Atlanta. 404-249-0001, www.spiralentertainment.com.
