The A5 Volleyball Club won the 18 National Division championship at the Junior Olympics in Dallas. The A5 181-Bob team out of Roswell defeated Amarillo Elite 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 in the final match to win the title. It was the 11th match in four days for the A5 team.
Team members are: Lexie Woodson, Jessica McAlvany, Grace Hoyt, Courtney Fletcher, Betsy Smith, Mary Chaudoin, Allie Schleisman, Kari Bardis, Olympia Haney, Lisa Carlson, Monique Mead, head coach Bob Westbrook and assistant coach Kendall Reid-Webster.
Fletcher was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Carlson and Schleisman were named to the all-tournament team. Eight teams from the A5 Volleyball Club qualified for the National Championships.
Motorsports
Will Martin of Douglasville won the Young Guns division in Week 5 of racing in Atlanta Motor Speedway's Thursday Thunder series. Bret Hardin of Acworth was second in the Outlaw division.
Triathlon
Mary Galbraith of Marietta won the 55-59 age group title at the Iron Girl Triathlon at Lake Lanier Islands. She finished the 1/3-mile swim, 18-mile bike and 3-mile run in 1:49:40. Liz Wilkins of Kennesaw was first in 60-64 in 2:18:33. Denise Dillon of Kennesaw was second in 45-49 in 1:32:37. In the 15-19 age group, Cassi Carmichael of Ball Ground was second in 1:41:26 and Shannon O'Kelley of Acworth was third in 1:45:03.
Crystal Perkins of Canton was third in 20-24 in 1:37:50. Jenny Selan of Smyrna finished third in the 25-29 group in 1:34:14. Kellye Mills of Canton was fourth in 30-34 in 1:30:37.
