Local women vie for title

Three Cobb and Marietta educators are among 15 people competing to be woman of the year. Marietta City Schools Superintendent Emily Lembeck, Cobb teacher of the year Gina Coss and retired former Cobb school principal Carole Kell are among honorees for the YWCA of Cobb County's 2008 Tribute to Women, and finalists for the Y's woman of the year award.

The winner will be announced March 27 at the tribute event from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Other nominees are: Dawn Billings, CEO and founder of the Heart of a Woman and the Joy of Connecting; state Rep. Charlice Byrd (R-Woodstock); state Rep. Sharon Cooper (R-Marietta); Lillian Darden, executive director of Foundation of Wesley Woods; Nancy Desmond, CEO of the Gingrich Group/Center for Health Transformation, Helen Goreham, Cobb commissioner; Anne Hancock, regional representative, U. S. Department of Education; Vickie Haney, vice president of Bank of North Georgia; Denise Harden, vice president, commercial banking, SunTrust; Kimberly Paris, development officer of the WellStar Foundation; Holly Walquist, Marietta councilwoman; and Julie Whitehead, chief engineer, C-5M, Lockheed Martin.

Marietta camp registration begins

Registration is under way for Marietta Community School's summer day camp, called Camp 'Us Adventures. Located on the Marietta High School campus on Whitlock Avenue, the camp is open to ages 5-14. Camp opens one week after school ends and closes two weeks before school begins. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Each week will focus on a different theme, such as American Spirit, Olympic Games and Rock 'n' Roll.

Pope's field house opens to Hounds

Pope High School Greyhounds recently celebrated the opening of their $1.2 million field house, culminating the House the Hounds 2008 Campaign.

College faculty finalists for award

Chattahoochee Technical College has four finalists for the Georgia Occupation Award of Excellence GOAL: Paria Sabzi, practical nursing; Jean Butler, environmental horticulture; Jamie Swindel, accounting; and Adebola Ojosipe, practical nursing. GOAL was the first statewide program in the nation to honor outstandng students in technical education.

Big Shanty to hold writing showcase

Even an old shoe can be an inspiration to aspiring authors. Kids at Big Shanty Intermediate School learned that in February from children's author Adrian Fogelin, who taught students to imagine characters who might have worn the old boots and ladies' heels Fogelin used as props. On April 1, Big Shanty will hold its second annual "Writing Road Trip: Big Shanty Authors' Evening" showcasing student writings. Last year, fifth-grade teacher Betsey Kennedy and media specialist Barbara Powell-Schager won the 2007 National Thomson-Gale TEAMS Award for their collaborative efforts creating Authors' Night.

Creekview third in academic tourney

Six juniors and a sophomore from Cherokee County's Creekview High recently placed third in the Georgia Academic Tournament Association Varsity AA State Tournament in Bleckley County. Team members are Kenny Hoehn, captain; Megan Bartkowiak, co-captain; Cade Creech, Rachael Saporito, Ryan Dickerson, Justin Rizzi and Ashley Martin.

Meeting to fight underage drinking

On Monday, the Cobb Underage Drinking Task Force will be host for its third annual Cobb Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking at 7 p.m. at the Mansour Center, 995 Roswell St., Marietta.

Cherokee High to host college night

College admissions representatives will be on hand for College Panel Night at 6:30 p.m. April 15 at Cherokee High. Represented will be: University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, Georgia College and State, Berry, Mercer, Georgia State and Kennesaw.

Arts take stage at Marietta schools

Marietta City Schools annual showcase of the visual and performing arts, "Spectrum," will be March 25, 27 and May 1 at Marietta Middle School. Student artwork will be on display at the school from 6 to 8 p.m. March 25 and 27. Special chorus and band performances begin at 7 p.m. on March, 25, 27 and May 1. Elementary honor choruses will perform on March 25. The Marietta Sixth Grade Academy, Marietta Middle School and Marietta High chorus, dance and drama performances begin at 7 p.m. on March 27. The MHS spring juried art show and the Spectrum concert at MHS featuring the MSGA, MMS and MHS bands is May 1.

Dickerson speller heads to state bee

Dickerson Middle School sixth-grader Sarah Cover will be among 20 of Georgia's top spellers competing at the Georgia Association of Educators' State Spelling Bee Friday at 11 a.m. at Georgia State University's Student Center's Senate Ballroom. The winner will represent Georgia in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington May 23-31.

Sawyer Road plans student memorial

Sawyer Road Elementary Junior Beta Club students raised $191 to purchase and plant a tree on campus as a memorial to celebrate the life of D'enthonee Davis, a Sawyer Road student who died recently.
