Senators, please ratify nuclear reduction pact
I hope Sens. Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss vote to ratify the New START.
Thousands of aging nukes that will never be used (unless they fall into the wrong hands) do not make anyone safer. They have nothing to do with defense. It is fitting that this treaty is called “START,” since it would reduce nuclear arsenals in the U.S. and Russia to 1,500 warheads each. This is far more than enough for either country to annihilate the other, so we will still have a long way to go after START is implemented to abolish these weapons from the face of the Earth.
The U.S. will never persuade other countries to forgo nuclear weapons unless it leads by example. Bob Goodman, Decatur

Let’s raise our voices
in support of New START
With partisan politics raging in Washington, the time has come for citizens to raise their voices in support of the New START.
The United States is facing significant security threats, from the risk of nuclear terrorism and growing proliferation concerns. The New START serves to mitigate these threats and builds global support for U.S. efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
Even with the New START limits, the U.S. will still maintain a strong nuclear deterrent. In order to improve our national security, I strongly encourage all Georgians to express support for START, and urge Sens. Chambliss and Isakson to vote for ratification.

As role models for girls, the Atlanta Beat rock
Soccer had never been a part of my life. But as the father of a 3-year-old daughter, I discovered the Atlanta Beat.
We attended their opening game and were amazed at the energy — both in the stands and on the field. We were hooked and have been back to subsequent games. What has really impressed me the most have been the interactions between the players and fans. Win or lose, these ladies are always available, and always very personable. I feel that my daughter not only has a great new interest, but great sports role models available to her.

Those who don’t live on lake shouldn’t foot bill
People in Berkeley Lake have a problem with their dam. What we don’t see is why they can’t foot the bill themselves. This attitude, in a microcosm, illustrates what ails much of America’s financial situation. If they want a lake, fine. Let them pay the bills associated with the maintenance, and reap the rewards. The rest of the country needs a respite from freeloaders. John Pilger, Atlanta
SCLC
Two sides need to act like Christian adults
The SCLC case drags on. This doesn’t sound like a Christian approach to a problem. The judge should direct the opposing sides to be placed in a room, and they should be required to stay in that room until they can arrive at who will lead the SCLC. Jim Warner, Atlanta
