HEALTH CARE

College students must make their voices heard

Young adults of college age make up a large percentage of the population without health care coverage. Many of these young people, from athletes to young mothers, don’t have health insurance. A student from North Georgia explained he wants to play on a rugby team. He continued, “I can’t afford to get hurt because I can’t afford health insurance.” I hear stories like this all too often. Students are limited by the fear of being hurt because of the potential cost of injuries.

College students can rejoice because of the passage of health care reform, but is it going to make affordable coverage available to us? How will the new laws be implemented? Only time can tell.

Young adults need affordable coverage. What can we do as hard-working college students to make sure we get that coverage? We can vote.

November elections are around the corner. If we don’t want to be the lost face of the health care crisis, we must vote. Support your representatives who support your needs. Your representatives will oversee the implementation of health care reform. Vote!

AJC POLITIFACT

Public service series provides the truth

This is to express my thanks and appreciation for AJC PolitiFact Georgia. In my opinion, this series is the best, and most needed public service a newspaper could provide. The average citizen is an information-saturated individual at most all times (and particularly during election times), and so much of this information is slanted — in my opinion — to whatever the particular agenda of its contributor might be. There is often “stretching” of the truth, or an out-and-out lie. A reliable source is definitely needed to provide the truth.

AJC PolitiFact Georgia alone is well worth my annual subscription to the AJC.

Bush wars will be felt for three generations

The wars of the Bush regimes have bankrupted America, decimated the U.S. Constitution and destroyed the chance for security and prosperity for the next three generations.

Spend our tax dollars on peace and social justice and economic equity — not on the murderous insanity of war.

ENVIRONMENT

I-20 exits could stand a good cleaning up

While driving through Cobb County in the Six Flags area recently, I was saddened by the filth and lackluster plight of the exits at I-20. If you turn onto Six Flags Drive, the road is in horrific shape, the sidewalk ends in tall grass and a huge pothole and the entire street is crumbling. You would think the citizens who live there would complain. Truck traffic has torn up the road.

It puzzles me why the park doesn’t work with Cobb County to clean up the area and make it look like an Orlando exit. They could take down old signs; cut the grass; put up more lights; clean the gutters out; sweep the streets and paint the underside of the bridge there, too. Six Flags? I give it one flag.
