The shoe-leather commute

I walked out the front door at 8:40 a.m., headed due west on Edgewood, and reached my desk at 9:20. That includes a stop for coffee at Javaology. It’s a great place, but it doesn’t have parking. That’s why I hadn’t stopped before.

It was a mostly pleasant stroll, great weather, sunny and temp in the ‘60s — only two flirtatious come-ons and one panhandler. It’s amazing the things you notice when you’re walking, like the Sisters of the Nile Moorish Barber Shop and Hair Salon. (When I want a Moorish hair cut, I’ll check them out.)

If I keep this up all week, maybe I will have burned off enough calories to allow myself my favorite indulgence — Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup.

(Posted Sunday night, based on last Friday’s shoe-leather commute.)

Walking, hmmm? What a radical concept! Tell us more about this walking thing. Will it take away from my driving time or can I do both at the same time while on my cell phone?

Darn. I saw the headline, “Cynthia Tucker takes a hike” and thought she’d finally left the AJC. Oh well. Better luck next time.

I love Cynthia Tucker. I am glad that the headline does not mean that she is leaving. She is a great writer and she writes about controversial topics in tasteful and informative manner.

Cynthia Tucker and her colums are both welcome additions to Atlanta and The AJC. She brings forth strong arguments, sound research, and passion for helping the down trodden and over looked members of our “Democratic” society. Thank you for all the eyes you open or challenge on a daily basis, Ms. Tucker. Sincerely, Colby Winters Atlanta, GA USA

Having seen Cynthia on Real-Time with Bill Maher, I can see why she got two flirtatious come-ons. Smart and pretty - a deadly combo.

When I read the headline “Cynthia Tucker Takes a Hike”, I thought it meant she was leaving. It sure got my hopes up only to be dissapointed. Ms.Tucker isn’t leaving the AJC and will continue to waste space every day somewhere in the last few pages of ‘A’ section. She helps to make the AJC more like the New York Times, not by adding insightful, interesting, or thorough writing, but by increasing its obvious and blind bias. Next time you take a hike Cynthia, keep on walking.

Several months ago I started training for my first marathon as a slow-moving geezer jogging through the city on Saturdays. Seeing the city in crack-in-the-sidewalk detail, I have gained an appreciation of my hometown that had escaped me in years of trying to beat the next yellow light.

Transitioning to commuting to work by foot or bike in an area built for automobiles and virtually hostile to pedestrian traffic is another question. Perhaps someday before I retire that will be feasible.

Darn, Like others, I thought that Cynthia Tucker and her laughable views were being replaced with something with substance. Most Metro Atlantans could care less about your favorite coffee house or ice cream.

Cynthia, are you trying to tell us something other than the obvious (that you’re attractive, you like ice cream and it takes you over an hour to walk to work). For instance, you are really saying in this Blog…that the price of gasoline is too high and the Ozone Layer Depletion made you do it…made you walk to work. Not to mention other things, I’m sure you will mention in your columns in the very real future.

My wife and I recently moved from the exurbs to Edgewood. She is now able to commute to work via MARTA. This allowed us to eliminate one of our cars.

On Saturday afternoon, I walked to Little 5 Points for a burger at the Vortex. It was truly exhilarating. I had no parking issues to deal with and I actually burned off some of the calories from the great meal.

It was a win-win proposition for me.

Other then this being a topic not everyone can identify with, it should be pointed out it took her 40 minutes, not an hour and 20 minutes, to walk to work. I see the benefits of walking, it’s just not feasible when you have a 25 mile commute.

Fear struck when I saw the words “Cynthia takes a hike”…Nooooooo. But since she just walked to work, I’m okay now. I’ve walked a lot around McDonough too, but now my egress is the only one into town and I take my life into my hands just trying to get to the sidewalk. Nice when I make it though, and I’m a kid again, walking to the five and dime, picking up bread from the grocery store. The Performing Arts is next door, I walk there at least once a week and am refreshed by exercise and the thespians I see on stage.

One of the main differences between demo. and repub.? Manners! Look how many republican/conservatives are so rude and bold with their comments. No proper upbringing or manners at all.

I guess for democrates to get any attention in our society we must become as rude?

Why lead your readers astray? Javaology DOES have parking…both behind the building on Boulevard and two doors down adjacent to Cafe 458. It is even clearly marked with Javaology logo signs.

The vitriol in some of these posts annoys me. While I may not agree with Ms. Tucker’s views all the time, I do recognize that she attempts (and succeeds in most cases) to express a well-supported view point. “Laughable” and “waste” are words I won’t use for her editorial. I, for one, appreciate what you do, Ms. Tucker.

Donald, if you could “care less”, why did you even take the time to post a comment?

You go girl! I hike all the time and it is amazing how quick the pounds come off and how increased blood flow to the brain lets you solve problems and be more mentally aware. It’s not how many hours you spend at your desk but what you get done while you are there. If more poeple walked to work we would have fewer health issues and a more productive society.

Many often think it’s either too wet, too hot or too cold but there is a certain beauty to walking in all these elements.

Since Gwinnett county put in sidewalks in my area (Brown Road and Old Peachtree) I have been able to walk the 1 mile to work at least three times a week for the past 8 months. I guess people walking to places in the suburbs is real unusual because teenage boys tend to holler out their windows at me like startled animals in a zoo. Some nice folks have offered me a ride because they think my car broke down.

If being liberal means walking to work, getting into shape, discovering new things than I guess being a conservative means driving an SUV, having a cell phone rammed into one’s ear, and shutting out the enviroment. Hey guys! It not that bad outside. Try it!

Consider yourself lucky to be able to catch a train and go to work, I sure wish I could. I do take the train anytime I can to any sports events downtown, or to the airport. I’ve never had a bad expereince on MARTA but on I-285 and GA 400 I have been screamed at, cussed out and had the finger.

I am sick of Atlanta’s commute times. There should be a time restraint on how many trucks are allowed on the interstate during rush hour traffic. Maybe if they can stay off the road between 7-9 in the am and 4-6 in the afternoon? They take up a great amount of space and most of the drivers don’t know how to operate their own vehicle. I live in Dekalb/Clairmont area and work in Alpharetta and I am tired of driving this commute its wearing down on my car and I am spending bucu amount of money in gas. I am considering taking the Marta to work especially now that they are allowed to ride the shoulder on the 400. However I do agree with a previous post the management is horrendous and the drivers act as if they have never ridden a bus before in their life.

I am extremely happy that Cynthia isn’t leaving the AJC. For all of those who are not happy that she is staying, just one small suggestion. You don’t have to read her column. Trust me, I don’t read anything by Rush Limbaugh, Neil Boortz, or any of the like.

Walking isn’t feasible when you live 45 miles away with a 1.5 - 2 hr drive. At least 98% of my co-workers live the same distance away, if not further.

Move into Atlanta you say? I have a very nice income as an engineer. I do not want to spend 80%-90% of it on a two bedroom apartment in downtown just so I can knock my drive down 45 minutes. I guess then it would only take me 45 minutes to get to work?!?!

Marta you suggest! It would take me 30 minutes to the closest train station (on the west side). Then I would have about a 45 minute commute on the train because I would have to change trains. That’s if I’m lucky enough not to get mugged on the way. Let’s know consider the cost ($13.00/wk + $10/day for beggars=26 dollars a week). That’s as long as I don’t get mugged or killed.

It’s time Georgia politicians do something constructive about the commute and shut up about Marta. That leads me to another subject…Why do we spend money putting a 285 flyover bridge to Perimeter Mall. Who is going to use it? Why is our tax money being spent this way..!!!!

Forget it I’m moving!

Thank God for the First Amendment. Sure, Ms. Tucker’s editorials and comments may swing left, but look at the trash that uber-conservative political pundit Ann Coulter writes. If someone like Ann Coulter can have her nonsensical column, anyone should be able to freely express their opinions. My 80-year-old grandmother should have one. I personally think she’d have more interesting things to say than Ms. Coulter. And she doesn’t even speak English! That is just my opinion. But the point is that you do not have to read Ms. Tucker’s column. Just as she is free to express her opinion (because it is, after all, and editorial/opinion column she writes), you are free to not read her column. People seemed to have forgotten that living here in the U.S. allows us the undeniable liberty of speaking our minds and expressing our opinions without being persecuted for whatever opinions we may hold. And even that is trying to be controlled by extreme Christian groups and the FCC. The joke about hoping Ms. Tucker had left for good — wasn’t funny the first time, so did you really think you were being clever by posting it 10 more times? The intelligence, maturity level and insightfulness of Republicans continues to amaze me every day…

Taking public transportation is not a left or right thing to do. I usually vote Republican and with that said I have agreed with Ms. Tuckers point of view, just as I have not agreed with some of the views of Rush or Ann Coulter. Even the times I did not agree with Cynthia Tuckers opinion, it was me who chose to read the article. It’s not that deep, if you know you probably won’t agree with someone, why bother in the first place.
