Waiting for Sarah

Last week the acceptance speech of Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama drew 38 million viewers — 60 percent more than John Kerry’s 2004 acceptance speech.

Here in Minneapolis-St. Paul, delegates are sky-high with anticipation. The headline on one of the national newspapers declared this morning, after President Bush spoke, that it’s now John McCain’s convention. Yes, but….

The thing about McCain is that he’s a known figure with a national reputation that needs, really, no fleshing out. Though it’s his convention, he just has to accept the reality that the exciting figure is Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. She’s the rock star — and that’s fine. McCain is the guy who instills confidence on national security issues. But she’s the gal who inspires a belief that Washington can be changed and that, indeed, the divide between Washington and the kitchen tables of American can be closed.

This is a Republican town this week, but even when you strip away the partisan-laced enthusiasm for Palin, there’s something genuine and exciting about her and the reaction of women, especially, to her.

It may not be 38 million watching tonight. But she’ll draw millions of Americans who don’t normally tune in politics. The convention so far has been fairly routine as these things go. Tonight, I wouldn’t miss it.

Questions: Will you watch? What do you expect?

It’s amazing to see so many strong males, representatives of a one political party offering their enthusiastic support to a woman candidate for VP.

The dems had their chance with Hillary. Had it not been for the sexism, so ignored and prevalent throughout the campaign, who knows……we could have been looking at a Hillary vs McCain to the finish line in November. I wonder who Hillary would have chosen for her VP?

I am sure that all of them on TV use makeup. However, there is not enough makeup on the shelves at Macy’s to give any of the non-Fox prime timers the coverage they require. May I list for you the county fair FFA Blue Ribbon winners for prize porkers?

Andrea Mitchell - looks like a grenade exploded near her without her makeup on (Google her up if your pacemaker dares)

Maria Shriver - looks like she died a year ago

Candy Crowley - my God, a coyote if ever there was, no question Sow of the Year

Meredith Viera - talks like she just ate a golf ball, looks like she just got hit in the head by one

Ann Curry - so 70’s, dresses like your maid

Katie Couric - looks of a potential axe murderer

Now, Captain my friend, if you are looking for style, beauty and brains, just go to Fox….Weather Channel comes in a close second. And these women are alive, not just droning out loud with that constant nasal overbite of, say, Hillary Clinton.

Decisions, decisions; what to watch, what to watch?

When it comes down to it, watching the Fox foxes or the Big Three pig parade, there is no contest. Not only are the Foxes good looking, but they are smart. The self-proclaimed Big 3 bloviating bovines often fulfill the meaning of a phrase my dad used a lot, when he said, “son, just be quiet and let people guess how dumb you are, instead of opening your mouth and confirming it.”

I understand Candy Crowley boycotted the DNC when she learned they were not going to serve fried foods on the convention floor…..she had just invested heavily in a pork futures (fried pork rinds), Golden Corral (she has reportedly bought seven outlets for her own private dining, one for each night of the week) and Chik-Fil-A, where she has substantial interest and appetite.

All America loves a winner. The elephant in the living room is how America will vote for a black candidate. Most of the Palin thing pales in comparison to this. Obama will have to have at least a 6-8% edge in the polls to account for the fact that he is black, plain and simple. When the average Joe six pack voter goes into the booth, closes the curtain and leaves political correctness outside, truth will tell. Then we will see if a black candidate will be successful in this country.

Also, if you want to stop making her daughter an issue, tell her to stop parading her and the baby daddy all over the place for photo opps. Was it really necessary for mccain to meet them on the tarmac, he could have easily met and greeted them in private. Captain you are obviously a man of refined tastes…

Yes, that is rather apparent. But you forgot the part about erudite and inerrant.

I have two questions for you:

1) beer or wine?

2) steak or fish?

THE Captain will take two of each. And don’t wander far, He will need refills regularly.

Smartypants liberals portray gluttony (cf. their ridicule of prominent conservative lard wagons Bill Bennett, Rush, and loofah boy O’Reilly) as something to be scorned. But THE Captain knows that it takes a great strength to sustain an unwavering True Belief. Cognitive dissonance will slip up behind the unsuspecting Common Senser and, next thing you know, independent thought runs rampant and one’s adherence to talking points and party orthodoxy lies in pieces at your feet like Britney Lynn Palin’s tattered prom dress.

THE Captain, however, knows how to deal with such a threat. Whenever a “fact” or some errant piece of “reality” threatens His carefully constructed house of cards, THE Captain presses the thoughts down hard with a large helping of rich food and strong alcohol. Then, heartily re-fortified — and with dangerous thoughts safely tucked out of the way — He is able to soldier on as the powerful Keyboard Kommando you all know and love.

Mr Wooten will attest…this is not work for the faint of heart. But THE Captain believes it is important toe PUT COUNTRY FIRST.

Bud man! Another chateubriand, and make it snappy.

* Noonan, Murphy trash Palin on hot mike: ‘It’s over’ *

After a segment with NBC’s Chuck Todd ended today, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan were caught on a live mike ridiculing the choice of Sarah Palin.

It’s over,” said Noonan, who then responded to a question of whether Palin is the most qualified Republican woman McCain could have chosen. The most qualified? No. I think they went for this — excuse me — political b****** about narratives,” she said. “Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and it’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.”

Murphy chimed in:

“The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.”

Noonan’s blunt call contrasted with her conflicted column today saying Palin “could become a transformative political presence.”

“The Sarah Palin choice is really going to work, or really not going to work,” Noonan wrote. “It’s not going to be a little successful or a little not; it’s not going to be a wash. She is either going to be magic or one of history’s accidents. She is either going to be brilliant and groundbreaking, or will soon be the target of unattributed quotes by bitter staffers shifting blame in all ‘The Making of the President 2008’ books.”

threedeep, you want to see Palin in front of a live press conference, well I want to see Obama in front of a live press conference and I want to see tough questions asked that answers have not already been rehearsed. All I hear out of Obama is change. Well he needs to explain exactly what kinds of changes he is refering to. He has not explained anything and I think he is afraid to explain the changes he has in store if he is elected. I just find it hard to vote for a Democratic President that talks in circles and will not explain anything he says. The Democrats are also complaining that Palin has not enough experience to be vice president but the truth is she has more experience than Obama. We really dont know much about this lady and I just think we should give Palin a chance before we start condemning her. As far as her parading her daughter around all the candidates have there familys with them. What is she supposed to do? Hide her like she is ashamed of her. Is that what you would do with you daughter? If so then you would be the true loser.

This speech by Gov Palin was the buzz by all 9 of my coworkers as we ate lunch at the sandwich shop today. Quite a diverse group from all spectrums. Some of those that have never followed politics were even excited about it. All expressed anger about the blatant media character assasinations. One young girl said it best that the more the media attempts to steer her away from Gov Palin, the more she is drawn to her.

You right wing dingbats are on meth! Palin has zero experience, no matter how much you try to say, the more you try to convince, the weaker your point becomes.

Wooten, all you have done in your comments is berate unwed mothers, citing them as no better than welfare trailer trash. Now all of a sudden, one of your own has sipped the kool-aid called hypocrisy and now she’s being carvorted about like an angel! Why don’t you mention that Palin and her hubby eloped not because of lack of money, but because she was pregnant too! Like mommy, like daughter.

I don’t agree with everytihng Obama has in store, but at least he has a plan and talks about issues.

All you limbaugh meth freaks care about is holding onto power at any cost, no matter how dumb and silly you look doing so.

Fred Thompson said it so well last night. McCain accumulated almost 400 demerits at USNA, drove around in ‘vette while dating a stripper..is this the kind of leader you want with a floozy in the WH!??? lol

I just heard the insult of all insults. I already knew that the Bush administration had sent billions of dollars to Iraq to rebuild the infrastructure and Iraqi army that our military destroyed on his command. Now we are proposing to give $1 billion to the country of Jordan to rebuild what the Russians destroyed. Can we stop them from doing it again? Then we/ they brag about the millions of dollars sent to New Orleans for the Katrina fiasco. Do you think that we have another billion dollars lying around to help people in Louisiana and Mississippi as a result of the latest hurricane? Question…Where is the money coming from to fund this and the ongoing war without increasing taxes? Are we borrowing from China and increasing our debt? How many social programs will be cut that impact our own citizens in order to take care of other countries?

Based on this, I am in agreement with the Palin supporters. She needs no experience in foreign policy to be vice president or president. Decisions are made by the oil companies and big business. Why else would we need foreign policy to squander our tax dollars at the expense of our own citizens? Voting for McCain means that this stupidity will continue. Obama needs to hit on this during the debates and suggest that the oil companies be taxed to support this effort.

I really like McCain. The McCain of 2000. This McCain has lurched so far to the right, as Obama has swept in to capture independents, that it appears McCain will only win in solid red states that would have already voted for him.

Crist or Lieberman would have been much better choice….McCain would have been able to sway independent voters and the far right would have still been forced to vote for him.

Palin has doomed the GOP’s November chances.

Jim, You repub talk about the obama supporters drinking the kool aid, that seems a lot more tasteful and healthy than the “arsenic” that your party seems to be sipping with great delight. 1) people get excited whether it is the DNC or RNC taking place in their town. 2)President Bush has had his turn and to put it in southern terms, “I believe he would screw up a soup sandwich”. 3) McCain National rep- A national reputation that at this point reflects SERIOUS poor judgement 4)Sarah a “rock star”- was it not a McCain/repub ad that ran stating that BO was a celebrity. 5) Genuine and exciting - genuinely real life latchkey kid drama, genuinely pure pandering in hopes that this will do it after the dems kicked the repubs butts last week. Not qualified. Mayor of 9,000 people does not = experience to run the united states.

Got earmarks of over $20 million as Mayor from the “good ol’ boy network” in washington DC but is a reformer who told off washington.

Believes all women who become pregnant due to rape or incest must have the child.

Her foreign policy experience is living in the state closest to Russia. (Cindy McCain’s quote, not mine)

She is simply not my choice for VP and John McCain is not my choice for President. I don’t need four more years of George Bush’s failed policies of lies and discord among the American public.

This speech is terrible. I’m glad Palin can read but lets see what she can do when someone doesn’t prepare a speech for her. She still has no experience at anything relevant. I’m glad she was mayor of her small town and that is something. But that’s something shared in the 1000s of small towns across America - nothing special with Palin.

More importantly, for all the knocks on Biden and Obama not having “executive” experience well, guess what… McCain doesn’t have any either!

Palin is an underwhelmed mother of 5, not fit for the big stage. I hope for our, and our children’s, sake that she never, ever, has control over anything other than glaciers and eskimos.

One more thought - this speech seemed to be very belittling. All good speeches have a couple of good one-liners, but this one was littered with them. They weren’t insightful lines making contrasts in policy, either; rather, they were shots at Obama’s stint as a community organizer, the backdrops to his speech (which are none more elaborate than the ones found at the RNC), and one that referenced him as a “messiah,” etc.

A couple of white lies were spouted as well: Alaska having “plenty of oil and gas” is debatable, and while it is true Obama will raise taxes, it will not happen on the broad scope that that was alluded to (although Palin was careful not to give any specifics on who was getting taxed more, but still implied pretty much all Americans would feel the burden of a tax increase).

The campaign played it right by not letting her talk to the media, they had an excellent speech written for her in an effort to control her second but more official intro to the American public. She obviously did a good job. You can think what you want about her, personally I don’t like her for a vice president, nor do I like her history as I have read it thus far. To much playing both sides. But what is left to be seen is what she will do against Biden. Obviously she is well prepped and good when she is scripted. When she is hit off guard, which they will have to do to knock her out of such a comfy spot, (which she is in because all focus is on her and this pick and not on Obama) that is the way they will win. They need to come out swinging, no more playing nice. Which is what I have seen from Obamas camp. To quote LL, “Mama said knock you out” Go Obama.

I was skeptical at first. Personally, the thought of Obama in the white house scares me because he realy has done nothing while in the Senate. But the idea of the right wing conservative right scares me too. I thought Lieberman would have been a better choice because it could really be a middle of the road moderate ticket that I thought would be unbeatable and the best thing for the American people.

But, wow! Palin is very moving. What a speach. She seems unflappable. We’ll see how she handles the VP debates, but my first impression is that she is a great choice. She may be a little more conservative than I would like, but she is an everyday person with a family and isn’t afraid to take ACTION. That makes two people on one ticket that take action and the lead candidate on the other that has never taken any action, but as Gov. Palin pointed out, has written two memoirs in addition to Mayor Guliani’s point that Obama loves to vote “present” on Senate votes. What presidant can vote “present”? Certainly not one I want.

By walter

Obviously written by someone other than Palin. long on buzzwords, short on policy.

Terror - Bad, Al-Queda will eat your children.

Obama - Bad, doesn’t understand.

Typical Republican scare tactics with zero substance. Just the same old same old attacks and scare tactics that are quite boring anymore. Played well in the hall, but negative campaigning with no substance doesn’t go far.

So if she has more executive experience than any of the candidates, why isn’t she running for President? What has John McCain run? Hey if we’re talking about “executive experience” and we’re obviously using that term incredibly loosely here, then obviously Palin should be running for president.

Republicans have had 8 years to completely screw up washington DC and now they want to be rewarded with four more years to “fix” what they screwed up. Don’t think so. Vote Obama and vote often.

I know Obama isnt perfect, neither is McCain, but I just really believe that McCain will have us in a mess in the next four years. As for Sarah Palin, plain and simple, I dont get it. It’s like she said alot of jokes, to show her humorous side, but I dont care about that. How do you feel about the war? CHANGE? Give me a break. What needs to change is the people of this nation not to put themselves first, but to ask what can I do to change, political or personal. It’s funny to hear on man talk of another and say he’s not ready to run a country, then join him as his running mate. Now you have a woman who some claim she has no business as VP, because of personal reasons/lack of foreign affairs, but she represents, I would say, most of american
