Obama needs Nunn; we need oil

It’s a long-shot that former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia would be Barack Obama’s choice as vice president. But polls make clear that if it’s not Nunn, it’ll have to be somebody like him — a seasoned politician who projects sound judgment and a wealth of experience in dealing with foreign policy and national security issues.

In spite of everything working against John McCain, he’s hanging in there against the rock star. The latest ABC News-Washington Post poll puts Obama up by only six percentage points, 48 to 42, against McCain. Significantly, though, almost half — 46 percent of those polled — don’t think he’s experienced enough to be President. In a world at peace, that might not be a major obstacle. In one where bad guys fly planes into landmark buildings, and where evil regimes could produce nuclear weapons during the next President’s term, being thought too inexperienced for the job is a big-league problem for Obama.

Nunn, while solid, has lost his star-power in the 12 years he’s been out of the U.S. Senate. But that may not matter. Obama needs a vice president like him, if not him.

McCain, meanwhile, has joined to ranks of those who recognize that while this nation may never achieve energy independence, it’s essential to take steps that move us in that direction. He called this week for lifting the federal ban on offshore drilling, with states that approve it collecting a portion of the royalties. Obama opposes that, saying that allowing exploration now won’t affect gasoline prices for at least five years.

President Bush is resuming his push for drilling on a tiny part of the Artic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. While, as Obama would argue, that will take even longer to have impact on domestic supplies, probably a decade, the nation does have to get started. That oil would be flowing now had environmentalists not persuaded former President Bill Clinton to veto authorization when Congress approved it in 1995. Ten years is a long time. But we can project that the day of $4 gas — or $8 gas — will come again. Act now.

JERUSALEM - Israel on Wednesday urged Lebanon to open peace talks, the latest move in a flurry of developments aimed at easing the multiple conflicts in the region.

Not wanting to converse has always been the trademark of the ignorant of the two party’s. No wonder it has become the default of the new millennium republican. Sitting down at a table does not afford ‘w’ the opportunity to position soldiers between him and the bad guys. Face to face takes a pair.

‘w’ has turned our Bald Eagle into a chicken…

Good morning all. Hussein’s judgment – that drilling would be futile – reflects the short-sighted economic policies that characterize leftists. At risk of noting the obvious, anything is futile if left unbegun. Nothing will cure the massive unfunded contingent liabilities of social security, unless we start to act. As the 1990s proved, nothing would cure the chronic problem of terrorists attacking US interests, until we started to act.

Seemingly leftists only think long-term about purely theoretical possibilities where leftists can steal a fortune from taxpayers by controlling the game, e.g., “global warming” and carbon trading. Or the “diminishing ozone layer” that arose around the time DuPont’s Freon patents were about to lapse, cured only by DuPont’s new patented coolant.

How’s that “no drilling in the US” working out, since that has been blocked by leftists since the Carter Administration? Not that Captain Queeg shows any greater intellectual capacity – I note he also opposes drilling in the ANWR wilderness, substituting his genius for that of those who wish to put money down for the potential, or for the locals who desire the development.

If the leftists would only allow freedom to flourish, the average citizen would be immeasurably better off. The leftists persist in their belief that they are smarter than markets, and only they can save the stupid commoners from their ignorance. That is why I vote for those who are smart enough to oppose the enemies of freedom.

Good morning Jim,Why would you think that Obama would be sensible when choosing a running mate?Such as Sam Nunn? He’s the old school,Jim, and he doesn’t fit into Obama’s image for change. He will probably go with a woman.I doubt it will be Hillary.

Since the G8 cannot agree on what is making the oil prices high,I doubt if more drilling in the past would have helped the present situation. One thing I am sure of ,however,is that we will play games through the remainder of this present crisis and do nothing to become energy independent.

Goldman Sachs predicted that the present credit crunch will not even hit it’s peak until sometime in 2009.Another $65 billion injection is needed now.Oil will continue to rise.

Obama Needs Nunn?

Yes, I agree. A black cannot do anything without the help, guidance and compassion of an educated white. It is just too bad that many Obama supporters hate the white community so much.

YOUR GOVERNMENT AT WORK Oklahoma to feds: Don’t tread on me State House defends its sovereignty from D.C. intrusion Posted: June 16, 2008 10:00 pm Eastern

© 2008 WorldNetDaily

Steamed over a perceived increase in federal usurping of states’ rights, Oklahoma’s House of Representatives told Washington, D.C., to back off.

Joint House Resolution 1089, passed by an overwhelming 92-3 margin, reasserts Oklahoma’s sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and, according to the resolution’s own language, is “serving notice to the federal government to cease and desist certain mandates.”

The Tenth Amendment states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

Traditionally, this language has meant that the federal government is limited in its scope and cannot usurp the sovereign powers of states. In recent decades, however, as the size and reach of the federal government has expanded, many have come to question whether Washington has stepped on states’ rights and gotten too big for its breeches.

Charles Key, the Republican state representative who authored the resolution, told WND that he introduced it because he believes the federal government’s overstepping of its bounds has put our constitutional form of government in danger.

“The more we stand by and watch the federal government get involved in areas where it has no legal authority, we kill the Constitution a little at a time,” he said. “The last few decades, the Constitution has been hanging by a thread.”

Specifically, Resolution 1089 says the following:

“The State of Oklahoma hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States.”

The resolution resolves that Oklahoma will “serve as notice and demand to the federal government, as our agent, to cease and desist, effective immediately, mandates that are beyond the scope of these constitutionally delegated powers.”

It also instructs that “a copy of this resolution be distributed to the president of the United States, the president of the United States Senate, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the speaker of the House and the president of the Senate of each state’s legislature of the United States of America, and each member of the Oklahoma congressional delegation.”

The resolution does not, as some have speculated, amount to secession, but it does send a warning signal to Washington: Oklahoma does not intend to be bullied by big brother government.

The Sooner State became a hotbed of federal vs. state authority clashes earlier this month when a federal judge blocked a portion of Oklahoma’s tough immigration laws, ruling that plaintiffs would likely establish that the state mandates preempted federal immigration laws.

Oklahoma’s immigration statute, known as the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007, originated as House Bill 1804 (co-authored, incidentally, by Key). It has been characterized by USA Today as “arguably the nation’s toughest state law targeting illegal immigration.”

The statute prohibits illegal immigrants from receiving tax-supported services and makes it a state crime to transport or harbor illegal immigrants. It also mandates that businesses take measures to verify the work eligibility of employees and independent contractors.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and individual chambers of commerce in Oklahoma challenged the latter mandates, set to go into effect July 1, in court.

On June 4th, U.S. District Judge Robin J. Cauthron issued an injunction against enforcing the July 1 mandates.

“We’ve just had a federal judge say that our immigration law’s employer provisions are unconstitutional, claiming it as federal government territory,” said Key in response. “That goes right to the issue of (Resolution 1089). The federal government doesn’t have the right to have sole domain over that issue or many of the issues it has spilled over into.”

Though House Joint Resolution 1089 received great support in Oklahoma’s House of Representatives, it has now hit a roadblock. In the state’s Senate, where the seats are split, 24-24, between Republicans and Democrats, the resolution was sent to the Senate’s rules committee, where it languished without action until the legislature adjourned.

According to Key, the Senate has worked out agreements on how to manage the political tie, including power given to the Democratic senators to not hear certain bills. Those senators, says Key, refuse to even hear Resolution 1089.

In the House, where Republicans enjoy a 57-44 majority, Resolution 1089 received a hearing and was supported overwhelmingly on both sides of the aisle.

“I was on the Democratic side of the floor,” said Key, “and one member went off talking about how far we’ve gotten, how bad (federal overreaches of power) are getting – it’s the kind of thing you hear in coffee shops.”

Key said his bill “is making a difference” in the way legislators in Oklahoma are talking and thinking about state’s rights. “I think it will make even more of a difference,” he said, “when I bring it up again.” He vows to put the pressure on Oklahoma’s Senate to pass a resolution like 1089, and he plans to begin communicating the cause with legislators around the country, urging them to bring up the issue in their states.

Key passed a similar resolution in 1994, when he was serving a previous tenure in the legislature. But that attempt was only a House resolution. He authored 1089 as a joint resolution because, he said, he wanted to increase its exposure. “As people who believe in this constitutional form of government,” he said, “we need to bring this issue to a national level and debate.”

If McCain is correct and we have 21 billion barrels of untapped oil reserves available in this country and we assume that we will continue to average about 20 million barrels of oil consumption daily in this country, then I think the real issue is this: Is it really worth damaging water quality and natural resources like the ANWR for approximately 2.5 years worth of oil?

Are we really so stubborn and set in our consumerist ways that we can’t find ways to cut back or come up with worthy fuel alternatives?

As much as it hurts my wallet (and it absolutely does) I, for one, would rather bite the bullet now and leave more nature intact for my kids’ future.

We should not be in any hurry to develop our last reserves of oil. Think of them as a savings account for the future. I’d rather pay higher prices now than see my country left with no domestic oil in twenty years, when the competition gets really tough for the world’s dwindling reserves. Who wants to be at the mercy of Venezeula, Russia and the middle east in 2025?

Wooten says, “In spite of everything working against John McCain, he’s hanging in there against the rock star.” So he’s just a rock star right, what is McCain then? An angery old hoot that likes to call his wife a c*nt. Great family values coming from the GOP.

“In one where bad guys fly planes into landmark buildings, and where evil regimes could produce nuclear weapons during the next President’s term, being thought too inexperienced for the job is a big-league problem for Obama.” Enough with the scare tactics. Remember those bad guys flew the planes into THOSE landmark buildings while your guy kept readiing My Pet Goat for 8 more minutes. Another one of Bush’s great Executive decisions. Like on of the previous posters said, drilling in ANWR and off the coast will at best produce 5 years worth of oil; subtract what your Big Oil friends will sell to other countries and you get at best 3 years worth of oil that we could use. It won’t bring the price of oil down now. If only the money from oil HAD PAID FOR THE WAR LIKE THEY SAID, WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS MESS.

By strictly just drilling for more oil, it doesn’t solve the problem and the oil companies will only make more record profits. This is nothing more than a political ploy because the GOP has nothing to run on. Provide facts instead of rhetoric, and maybe we can talk Wooten.

Jbmlaw,

Ironic, no, that the inheritors of a federal territory carved out by soldiers and watered by Georgia Cherokees’ tears would have the gall to pass this sort of Resolution.

I am sure that you would agree that there are some fairly obvious constitutional concerns with the Sooners’ logic. Can’t they just get T. Boone Pickens to buy them a new country?

I enjoy a hearty laugh, too, when my friends on the far right wave the standard of the U.S. proudly and talk about patriotism in hyperbolic terminology, but then retreat to “states’ rights” when convenient.

On the topic today, I couldn’t agree more that Sen. Obama should choose a fellow Southern Democrat. I do believe that Georgia is actually in play this election, as well as Florida and (maybe) the Carolinas. An experienced, moderate Southerner would be a welcome addition to the ticket for me and might push my vote from undecided to the Obama camp.

My latest source of amusement, too, is when those on the far right speak of the “dangerous” world we live in and how we need experienced leaders. Who would your dream team of experienced leaders be? I am guessing one would be hard-pressed to have found a more ‘experienced’ team than Cheney, Powell, and Rumsfeld. That doesn’t seem to have worked out so well, has it?

Final thought: can’t remember which advisor it was, but someone from Bush I’s policy team had a great interview quip I saw the other day. Basically, the gentleman said, “Upon losing the election, I used to get asked a lot why we didn’t continue on to Baghdad. Lately, I don’t get asked that anymore.”

This administration will be judged not least for its hubris and incompetence and for making the world a more dangerous place with each passing day.

No matter how much oil we have no one can argue the point that it’s going to run out. Renewables are the answer. It doesn’t have to be corn. Ethanol can be made from a variety of things. Best thing to do is make sure that no sector gets subsidies. Let each alternative stand or fall on its own merits. Maybe when we do find a replacement for all we’ll be smart enough to find several and not put all our eggs in one basket this time.

We have the technology to develop a hydrogen fuel cell automobile and Honda has one now that gets about 270mi for about $20 and you could drink the water(byproduct of combustion) from the exhaust pipe with ZERO emissions. Ford has a prototype electric cell Explorer that can get 150mi on one electric charge plugged into an outlet in your garage between trips. Again, ZERO emissions. Why are we not developing these things so we can tell Chavez, Faud and all of those other paper dictators what they can do with their oil. Oil should be a pollutant by 2020 and could be if we would get off of our political a** and mandate change!! This fossil fuel dependence from foreign countries that are certainly not our friends will kill our economy and spell doom for our grandchildren if someone with vision and some balls doesn’t step forward.

TW, The only thing that makes this a political issue is who is proposing what. The list could go on and on, irregardless of political party, ties to PACs and campaign contributions, etc. This rises above the political and becomes a matter of survival. I don’t think that anyone that I can recall has proposed an energy plan to eliminate fossil fuels because of the political suicide that that would create for re-election. And that goes of both Repubs and Demos. If we would stop standing on either side of the political divide and quit hurling insults at each other, maybe we could get a grip on this issue. The downside is not pretty.

Ray,

The private sector is developing these new and innovative cars. You just showed that.

I do have a few question though.

Until we can get hydrogen available to the masses, what will we use?

Until we can produce enough batteries, Toyota is having a problem with this, what will we use?

How do you balance the pollution generated by building these batteries? The Prius is dirtier than a sub compact to make, not to mention the dangers to first responders. Can you imagine what would happen if a fireman cut through a high current lead off the batteries?

But until we can do all that, what should we use? How long will it take the public to switch to the new cleaner ones - those of you old enough, remember the struggle we had when we took lead out of the gasoline?

Just saying it will not make it happen. But then again, that is what the lefties are famous for - Hey, lets make ethanol from feed for livestock.

To all the people pointing at our coast saying let’s drill here, be mindful of this fact: that energy source will NOT last. It won’t. What is a long term solution? That is what more and more people are looking and searching for, not immediate gratifcation. If the housing and credit markets have not respectively shown us the ignorance on short term solutions and instant gratification, something IS wrong with us as a country. And what is the deal with Americans not trying/ doing/ beginning new and inventive things to SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS? No new inventions to make life better for us all YET. No promises of things being worked on either. Why is everyone acting like this is normal behavior for OUR country. None being discussed either; every new idea for an energy source or alternatives to gas/oil is coming from another country? Are you kidding me? REALLY? Our solution is for Bush to beg Saudi Arabia for more oil and then to drill instead of pushing new industries so that people can get back to work in those new industries? We are going to keep waiting on the rest of the world to lead the way for us in doing alternative energy and for beginning new innovative ideas in this area of our lives? REALLY? When did we become this country that does THAT waiting for some OTHER country to solve our issue instead of solving thing for themselves and then sharing it with the world?

I read many of the comments and frankly, if we had worked with Carter bak in the late 70’s early 80’s we probably would not be in this fix, maybe we would have kicked our dependence on foregin energy sources YEARS ago. Short term answers which are merely temporary is the type of society we have turned into and it has seriously BACKFIRED. Time to get back to using some common sense. If drilling occurs it should be limited, alternative fuel for cars, homes, and the rest of every day things should be looked into and encouraged (umm, solar energy etc. anybody?). We are an intelligent and smart group of folks (Go America, Yes. We. Can!) with determination, and YES common sense we can make it out of this hole. Short term goal = ease gas prices, long term goal = stop depending on everyone else for our energy. Geeze, the idea and common sense pertained in that idea can’t be that hard to grasp and understand.

Dutchman,

We have to start somewhere. Offshore drilling, using the oil reserves, drilling in ANWAR… short term answers to a long term problem. We have to have the mentality of the early 1900’s and start all over again. We have done it with video technology, we have invented the computer that has revolutionized our every day’s activities, we have blazed the trail in medical advancements and we are on the cusp of stem cell research that could change so many things. Don’t tell me that we can’t do it. We just won’t because of the damage that this kind of change could do to our “elected officials” on either side of the aisle who are responsible for where we are now. Congress makes laws, appropriates monies and has more to say about our way of life than anyone in the Oval Office. If Congress wanted to eliminate fossil fuels, they would propose legislation to do just that!! If they wanted a more just tax code, it is just a bill or two away. If they wanted to do away with illegal immigration, they would have done it long ago. It is risky to loose the Latino and Cuban vote so we don’t do that. It is risky to loose the oil PAC money so we don’t do that. The automobile lobby and the labor unions could loose you votes too. Figure it out. It’s not hard, despite what Katie Couric says.

By Dutchman

June 18, 2008 11:13 AM | Link to this

Ray,

Yes, we can do all that, but there is no way to do it all over night. We can not halt abiotic fuels and start producing and distributing other types of fuels. We will still need oil for the diesel engines used by trains and truckers. We will still need lubricants. We will always need some oil.

If we can produce hydrogen is sufficient quantities for domestic use, as we all remember from our chemistry classes that the molecule is so small that leaks would happen almost immediately and constant maintenance would be required.

How would we get it to small town USA? We have huge pipe lines to move oil and oil products, but none for ethanol or a gas(or liquid)like hydrogen. Distribution infrastructure would take years maybe decades.

What until then?

Obama’s choice for a vice-president. Of course we need a good solid patriotic person to fill in for Obama. He lacks the credentials. That is, we will need an ACTUAL president to fill in for the rock star (Jim’s words). I think Nunn is too intelligent to get embroiled in a fiasco that would necessitate Democratic brain washing.

Nobody knows what to do about oil & energy but EVERYBODY has an IDEA. If only we could find ONE EXPERT.

Thank you, jbmlaw, for telling us about Oklahoma. Yes, sir, tell us Southerners about state’s right and let Oklahoma find how it goes. We need a balance between the states and the “federal”. I hope we can keep it equal. Louisiana seems to think that the Feds are totally responsible for them. But that is another story.

Sorry for you TW, SouDem and Shar..but Bush has kept you free and freed two countries from tyranical government. I gather you think that is nothing and we should change. And Obama is YOUR CHANGE???

Dutchman,

We cannot fix in a short time what we spent decades creating, however if we could just eliminate 50% of our oil imports by other technology, we would no longer be dependent on foreign sources for fossil fuel. That would give us the breathing room to develop other technologies that could bring us back to pre-dependence mentality and cure the “protect our oil source” mindset when it comes to Middle East politics. We are in Iraq for the oil and seemingly sacrificing a few thousand military to protect our never ending gluttony for more oil is acceptable to most of the soccer moms who are not touched by what is going on in Iraq as long as they can still fill up their SUVs and take Ashley to soccer practice. We pulled together in WWII and made an effort that was never equaled in the history of man to protect our lifestyle and the lifestyle of others. I find it amazing that these ecolo-nazis think that it is perfectly OK beat the hell out of the USA on ecology concerns but turn a blind eye to Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Russia and other countries that drill for the commodity our economic system depends on without ANY concern for the ecology.

Whether or not you wish to face it, our economy runs on oil. Unless you want us to become an impoverished 3rd world country, we’re going to need oil for the foreseable future.

Now, do you want bleed our economy and continue to get the oil from our enemy’s dictators, or do you want to capture this required resource for ourselves, all the while controlling the ecological impact while at the same time developing supplemental sources of energy?

That’s your ONLY choice! and all your caterwauling about oil spills is inane and ludicrous!

We need to drill everywhere and rapidly develop other energy sources. We should get 75% of our electricity from nuclear plants and quit burning that nasty coal. BTW, most of that smog hanging over Atlanta comes from the coal-fueled power plant, not car emissions.

How is allowing drilling here going to lower the price of gasoline for us? IT WON’T! It will cost the oil companies (already making record profits) a bundle to set up the drilling, (despite the additional corporate welfare they’ll receive in the form of US tax breaks we wont get), a cost they’ll pass along to us. By the time they get production going in five or six years, the cost per barrell may be $250 or more. Does anyone think they’re going to turn around and sell gas to us CHEAPER than the global market price? HELLOOOOO?

If you believe that, you probably thought that electing OIL EXECUTIVES to the highest offices in this country was a good idea, because they’d look out for the American people regarding our energy needs. D’OH!

I am so sick of hearing that if I don’t beleive in drilling in our protected areas for oil that I am not American. To the people that love to spout off “Delta is ready when you are”, I ask what defines American in your mind?

Let me guess,

Overweight, beer-drinking, flag waving, bible-thumping, racist, sexist, screw-the-environment, damn-the-commies, “If you don’t like it shove a boot up your a**”, “We are better than everyone else”, John Wayne, cowboy types.

Does that sum it up? Sounds like the dark ages to me. Why not try using the grey matter in our skulls to think of new ideas. After all, a “New IDEA” is how America was founded in the first place. I think our founding fathers are rolling in their graves to see us refuse to change or mend our ways, or think of new ideas.

Drilling offshore or in Alaska is like putting a very small bandaid on a gunshot wound. It may help for a minute or two, but it is not really what is needed.

I say let’s change the idea of an “American.” How about leading the world in new technologies to curb the energy crisis? Doesn’t that sound much more respectable?

But as you have been identified as a lawyer I guess you are used to arguing your clients side through plausible, yet hardly believable, circumstances. And don’t bother with your, “We haven’t been attached in nearly seven years,” Clinton could have said the same at the end of his term 1993-2000], as could Reagan [1983-1989], it’s too great a price to pay for these past w-years.

h,

Actually, we are employed older folks that believe in a balance between a clean environment and using less foreign oil and gasoline. While we may be members of churches and middle aged, I would not use the description you stated.

I would describe you as a bleeding heart liberal that thinks man is the greatest cancer on this planet. You are someone that feels the the US the worse country on our planet. I would think that you do not care the your hero Hugo is a worse polluter than we are. With the two new oil discoveries off the coast of Brazil will make them a true economic power in South America and that is okay with you, but damn the US for wanting the same thing.

While we import more and more refined gasoline, the workers in this country are idle. This is an opportunity to put thousands of US workers back on the payroll, but you and your ilk, feel too bad, it “might” hurt the environment.

I also think you are totally against the miracle called DDT. Yes, we did overuse it in the past, but we have problems with malaria world wide. We conquered this once, we can again, smarter and better, but the bird eggs are more important than human lives. So people will die.

I also feel you are a name tag worker - “Hi, my name is Bobby” or something like that and under 30. Your still a kid, grow up, get a real job.

But then again, as Dennis Miller says, “That’s my opinion, but I might be wrong”

Wooten, a Bush/McCain Party shill, is using the same old fear tactics and subtle negative references that the Bush/McCain Party has been feeding the American people for the last seven years.

Don’t you Bush/McCain people realize that nobody believes anything that you say or do. It’s the old tale of the boy crying wolf so many times that no one believes him anymore. Sooner or later you will have to actually shoot straight rather than just saying that you are shooting straight.

The Bush/McCain Party candidate McCain says one thing one day and another completely different thing the next day. I don’t believe that he could shoot straight if he held it with both hands!

Wooten, McCain, and their diehards are urinating on our legs, like the dogs that they are and telling us that they’re trying to keep us warm. I’m not buying, I know the smell.

It is not going to be pretty by the time this election is over. Some topics for the future:

McCain: one of the dumbest in his class at the Naval Academy;

Was McCain a maverick and being reckless when he received that SAM-2 up his tail pipe? Was he following orders? Everything leading up to his stay at the Hanoi Hilton indicated a reckless and loose canon was put into the seat of one of our most expensive flying machines. Has he ever regained his stability and footing? Some say his current uncontrollable bursts of temper and rage indicate that he has not been able to overcome his demons. The last person we need in the White House is a man with uncontrollable demons with his arms wrapped around the nuclear football.

When McCain committed adultery and abandoned his first wife, was he holding up family values? Or, was he on a search for a trophy wife? Now, why does he only pay his ex-wife $17,000 a year in alimony. He’s a real family values man!

Just how experienced is McCain? After seven years into the Iraq invasion, has he learned the difference between a Sunni and a Shi’a? Kurds are not something that you eat with the whey!

Is he the hot-headed, raging jerk that some of his fellow party members and Senators say that he is?

Has McCain ever saw a war that he didn’t like?

Is McCain for immigration reform today like he and the Chamber of Commerce were for it last year?

Is McCain for campaign financing reform today or merely when it’s convenient?

There are more questions that we can ask about McCain here and in the national media. Don’t think that you can trash Obama without slobbering all over yourselves.

Good day!

KnowItAll, why do you persist in doing that label such an injustice. If the sky falls! Are you referring to the formation of rain drops? If so, we get rain. Pigs fly when swine take to the airways. If the comet is big enough, you might wish to make your peace with your maker — or not. Whether or not you care to face it, we need alternatives now — not when the oil is gone or just too expensive for the average person. Of course, “average” does not apply to you — not with those poorly conceived remarks. By the way, I choose not to accept any of your picks. So, in retaliation to your words, I could say something like “If you don’t like it, why don’t you take the next flight out”. Now, do you see how utterly stupid and ludicrous such comments sound. Then again, how could you.

By the way, I hear the oil drillers are always in search of someone willing to insure against oil spills. They especially like to use insurance companies that believe that oil spills never happen. So, show a little semblance of intelligence and take a shot at answering the question about the cost of cleaning up a 147 million gallon oil spill. You know. Like the one that happened in the Gulf of Mexico in the late 70’s. I still remember the gooey black mess that was all over those sandy white beaches. There is no enviro-whack-nut-case scenario here. I asked a plain and simple question that any good business-oriented, every-day, American-born-and-raised capitalist looking to invest in corporate America should ask — if he’s got any financial sense at all, that is.

Did anyone see that Mr. Bush said he will lift the drilling ban if CONGRESS voted to do it first!

Does that sound childish or what?

I think we can all safely assume that the conservatives have no idea how to change the price of oil. Iraq Oil was supposed to pay for the war. Itself. Bush couldn’t find any oil in Texas. Bush. Is the bush base really

The oil company exec’s themselves have been warning that if congress ever regulates the price of oil, then we’ll have supply problems and skyrocketing prices. Was Teddy Roosevelt correct about monopolies or what?

Nobody has any idea about what is really driving this gas bubble, or how it will pass. The answer is gone with the wind. McCain’s campaign is a lot of sound and fury. I hold my nose at McCain.

Yet we’re supposed to admire that McCain’s in bed with big oil and we’re supposed to think McCain’s dutch oven politics is amusing??

I’m tired on account of having a bad night last night. I was setting there watching Fox News and up come this picture of two men kissing and hugging each other during their wedding in CA. Well, I sort of blacked out, I guess, and when I woke back up my 32 inch flat screen TV was blasted to smithereens and there was a big hole in the wall and I was standing there with a shotgun in my hands.

The missus raised all kind of heck. Said we paid $2500 in a scratch and dent sale for that TV and now I done ruint it. Not to mention the hole in the wall. I can fix that, I told her. A little sheetrock mud will do the trick and what’s one more piece of missing siding? Anyhow, I had to leave for Billy Bob’s just to get away from the ruckus.

These gays will never quit till they turn the U.S. of A. into one big Sodom and Gonorrhea. Besides, they are making my marriage just worthless. I’m all for telling the guvmint to leave us alone except when its stuff that I don’t like, like gay marriage. Then we need lots of guvmint laws to protect us.

Anyway, have a good day everybody and a tip of the John Deere cap to that other Redneck Convert. I hope that extra toe don’t bother him.

Dutchman,

Actually I consider myself more moderate than truly liberal, and I actually am religious as well. As for Name tag worker, um, i don’t think so, My salary and responsibilities would beg to differ. Also, I happen to think Hugo Chavez and the like are bigger morons than even the Bush Administration (which is saying a lot). He is certainly not my hero. And I don’t give a fiddlers fart if Venezuela is in position to be a big power in South America. Whoopee.

Now that we got all that straight, lets address the issue.

I believe in reducing our dependence on foreign oil as much as the next person. However, I merely suggest that we use our “superior” American intellect and do this in the smartest way and the way which will make the most difference.

More drilling will only help for 5 years at most. What happens after that, when that oil is dried up, or stuffed into untouchable reserves and now gas is $10/gallon? I am sure you don’t think about things like that, you are just worried about your big Ford F-250 making it to your non-“name tag” job and having to pay too much for that. However, I propose we think LONG TERM. You know, ask the tough questions instead of blindly rushing into something not thinking about or caring about the consequences (Hello, IRAQ!)

Whether or not you care for the environment, you have a RESPONSIBILITY to leave the world a little better for the next generation. We are raising a generation of children that will have NO chance to do as well or better than their parents did. That is sad. What do we tell our kids and grandkids, “Sorry that there are no polar bears, penquins, whales, etc. They were really cool, but we needed to power our V-8 engines, so they had to go.” Of course, by then all the natural reserves of oil in the US will be gone and because no one wanted to get off their butt and take on the oil companies and develop other alternatives on a mass scale, they will have a greater crisis than we are in the midst of now.

But I am sure that doesn’t matter to you. Most conservatives, like Wooten above, only care about what matters to them, now. No concern for tomorrow. Am I a bleeding-heart liberal who cares only for conserving the environment, no matter the cost? No, but I do care about the world I am leaving for my children.

The United States is engaged in torture and everyone knows it! Here’s something of interest: In a 121-page report, the doctors’ group said that it uncovered medical evidence of torture, including beatings, electric shock, sleep deprivation, sexual humiliation, sodomy and scores of other abuses.

The report is prefaced by retired U.S. Major Gen. Antonio Taguba, who led the Army’s investigation into the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal in 2003.

“There is no longer any doubt that the current administration committed war crimes,” Taguba says. “The only question is whether those who ordered torture will be held to account.” Demand that the criminal Bush be brought to justice!

Perhaps Wooten needs his memory refreshed: Bush was never more than 4 points ahead before the ‘04 elections and he won. McCain is going to get stomped. Obama’s lead gets a little wider every week and his lead in key states like PA and OH is also widening. Also a recent poll has him ahead in Florida.
