Nation’s voters don’t embrace liberals

Pennsylvania had 158 delegates at stake Tuesday. No resolution, still, despite the outcome. Obama went into Tuesday with 1,646 delegates to 1,508 for Clinton, with 2,025 needed to win the nomination.

Among delegates won in primaries and caucuses, Obama led 1,414 to 1,250, according to the Associated Press count, while Hillary has a 258-232 lead among superdelegates. Who can decipher the rules? (It was amusing that in last weekend’s Georgia delegate-selection process the rules mandate specific gender balance by candidate. What a disaster.)

It is noteworthy, as others have pointed out, that Democrats are about to nominate another candidate in the mold of John Kerry, Michael Dukakis, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter and Al Gore — and one who’ll get the nomination by winning smaller states, like South Carolina, that the party has no hopes of winning in November. Except for his home state of Illinois, Hillary won the big states: New York, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida Ohio and others essential to Democratic success in November.

His base is blacks, liberals and young voters. Blue-collar workers making less than $50,000 a year, older women and Hispanics — key constituencies the party needs — aren’t with him yet.

Kerry, Dukakis, Gore and McGovern couldn’t win. Obama is one of them — too far left for America.

Wrong again, Wooten. America’s so sick of Bush’s failures that another Republican victory is AT LEAST four years away.

The Democratic triumph this fall is inevitable—not because they’re perfect, but because the Republican regime has been such a blatant disaster.

Call it a win by default if you like but either way, a better, more LIBERAL America’s a-comin’! It’s a great time to be a REAL American, and not a whiny, cowardly-traitor Republican!

Wheeee!

Obama will not pick up those constituencies, either. I think they are more likely to swing to McCain than Obama. The Democrats kicked their most electable candidate to the curb early. Good for them.

Right on target, Jim, Obama’s sweep of cowtipper states is impressive on paper. In a real election, he’s fodder for McCain.

Good morning all. I think it self-evident that America will elect a leftist president in 2008 – either John McCain or one of the two democrats. I think anyone elected in 2008 is unlikely to be re-elected in 2012, for the reasons Jim explains in today’s essay. While one cannot say that a leftist has never won as a leftist in a US election – Lyndon Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt certainly belie the theory – lately the only route to election for a leftist in America has been to conceal the agenda, e.g., Jimmy Carter 1976, run on no platform at all. Bill Clinton, stained with a horrible first impression after taking office – the attempt to socialize medicine – reversed ground skillfully and worked with a conservative congress to abolish welfare as “we know it,” much to the chagrin of his own party. President Clinton’s “triangulation” removed the leftist stench and earned him a renewal in his 1996 race against another moderate.

Almost as amazing as President Clinton’s mid-term rehabilitation has been Hillary Clinton’s escape from the leftist tag. She was the principle author of the failed 1993 effort to nationalize one-sixth of the economy, and even this year on the campaign trail affirms the spirit of that effort. She certainly is a leftist by any objective measure, but because she has been standing next to a fellow who is even more leftist, she looks moderate by comparison. I’ve always heard it is smart for a fat person to surround himself with even fatter people, or for a dumb person to surround himself with even dumber people, so I see the application of the standard for Mrs. Clinton.

Although Obama – in words spoken by Tom Sowell – may make an eel seem like sandpaper by comparison, he has been undone by a weatherman and a bullfrog.

The trouble is, the GOP has their own liberal at the top of the ticket. And mind you, while John McCain is not in the same ballpark as Obama in terms of his liberal tendencies, McCain-Feingold, McCain-Lieberman, his initial opposition to tax cuts (using the same class warfare rhetoric as Democrats) are all liberal-minded policies.

As for Operation Chaos, the liberals in the media chose the GOP’s candidate, so I think it’s only sheer justice that the GOP (led by Rush Limbaugh) get to pick the Dems’.

And personally, I think it’s funny as heck…..

I have advised my “yellow dog Democrat” friends (primarily ones who voted for Kennedy and every candidate with a “D” after his/her name since… there are fewer FDR yellow dogs around than there used to be) who are trying to figure out who to support in the Democratic nominating process to stand in line behind the person that the far right tries its hardest to tear down. Mr. Wooten’s column today should help answer their questions.

The far left and mid-left will rally around whomever finally secures the nomination the same way the far right and mid-right have rallied around McCain.

The election will be decided not by those with ideologies like Mr. Wooten or Dusty or Jim’s a Cherry Picker, but by undecided moderate voters. As I’ve said before, I look forward to choosing a candidate with pride rather than by default (my modus operandi for the past 5 elections). Right now, I’d give a slight edge to McCain.

Think again! Most Democrats are NOT ultra liberal. If Obama is nominated, he will lose in November. Too bad for the democrats and the country. I disagree about Gore, but that one’s been beaten to death. I think Gore won the last election. Obama will lose, and don’t even GO THERE with me about being prejudiced. His failure to be elected will have NOTHING TO DO with being African American. At least from my point of view it want!

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry endorsed Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Wednesday, calling him an inspirational leader who can unite the country.

“I believe Senator Obama is uniquely positioned to unite our nation and move beyond the divisiveness and partisan skirmishes that too often characterize politics as usual in Washington,” Henry said early Wednesday in a statement released by the Obama press office in Chicago.

The endorsement one day after the Pennsylvania primary gave Obama the official support of three of the state’s 10 superdelegates, while Clinton has the backing of one superdelegate. The rest are uncommitted.

Henry, a moderate Democrat in a Republican-trending state, said he had worked hard to build a consensus across party lines on such issues as education, job creation and health care and “that is why I am so enthusiastic about Barack Obama’s candidacy.”

“Senator Obama understands that the serious concerns facing average Americans must transcend partisan games if we are to rise to the challenges of today and tomorrow. He is a strong, committed and inspirational leader, ideally suited to bring together Democrats, independents and Republicans,” Henry said.

Obama said he was proud of Henry’s support “as we continue to build our grass-roots movement for change.” He said Henry had “achieved real results” as a consensus builder himself in Oklahoma.

“We’re fortunate to have Governor Henry’s backing, and I look forward to working with him in the months ahead to bring about real change not just for Oklahomans, but all Americans,” Obama said.

Henry became the first major Democratic elected official from Oklahoma to endorse Obama. The state’s only Democratic congressman, Rep. Dan Boren, remains uncommitted as a superdelegate, although his father, David Boren, has endorsed the Illinois senator. David Boren is a former governor and senator.

The 44-year-old governor’s endorsement came despite Obama getting only 31 percent of the Democratic primary vote in Oklahoma’s Democratic primary on Feb. 5 against Hillary Rodham Clinton, who got 55 percent.

Barack just sent out this email…

Friend —

In a state where we trailed by more than 25 points just a couple weeks ago, you helped close the gap to a slimmer margin than most thought possible.

Thanks to your support, with just 9 contests remaining, we’ve won more delegates, more votes, and twice as many contests.

We hold a commanding position, but there are two crucial contests coming up — voters will head to the polls in North Carolina and Indiana in exactly two weeks. And we’re already building our organization in the other remaining states.

But it’s clear the attacks are going to continue, and we’re going to continue fighting a two-front battle against John McCain and Hillary Clinton.

I need your support right now. Please make a donation of $25:

Devastator, Obama’s Muslin background will hurt him. That preacher he’s been sitting and listening to for 20 years will hurt him. Just wait until the R’s get his feet to the fire in the debates that will follow. There’s too much money and power involved for the R’s to lose this election. That’s why the ultra righters have been attacking Clinton. They want Obama to win, because they know he’s beatable in November. However, IMHO I believe the factor that will do him in is his Muslin background (and that church). I have my opinion; you have yours. To each his own.

Anyway, you won’t have any trouble voting for McCain because he is a wise, fair and patriotic veteran, far above the power pressed woman and the eloquent entrenched entrepreneur of undermining America. Not a hard choice.

Well, I’m happy to see I ain’t alone. I hate libruls too because—because—well, I can’t think of a reason except they like Those People and Jews and won’t let me carry my two machine guns and anti-tank weapon around when I feel like it. That and not letting us step in and make sure women have all their babys and the gays don’t go marrying.

Anyhow, its real sad we got three libruls in the running for President. What we need is a real strong leader like My President. Maybe a Adolph Hitler without the Nazi stuff but sort of like him. You know, put the screws to the libruls and lock them up but let us keep our Freedom and Rights. Listen in to all the phone calls and read all the mail to make sure we are Safe. Stop the taxing and just borrow to let us have what we want to have. If things get too bad we can just tell the Chinese Commies we ain’t paying them back and if they don’t like it they can just have a A-bomb shoved up their private parts.

Anyhow, Wooten saying the nation don’t like libruls is like saying the sun comes up every day. And I sure hope he’s right. I would hate to have to move to Canada if one of Those People or a Cookie Baker gets elected President. The shame would be too much to carry around. People would point and laugh and say you have one of Those People or a Cookie Baker for President. And us rednecks would just sulk and cringe. Old Sonny would have to bow and scrape when he come with his hand out to Washington to get money or maybe part of the TN River. McCain is a librul, but leastwise he’s our librul. We made a big mistake not electing the Rev. Huckabee and putting God back in the White House.

And have a good day everybody.

The skyrocketing price of fuel and the plummeting value of the dollar is causing as much damage to the airline industry as the 9/11 attacks. The loose lending and speculative investment policies of the first half of this decade have rocked some of the most stalwart financial institutions across the the globe. Elderly retired folks are losing income on their investments in stocks and bonds. Speculation in commodities by investors that have abandoned stocks and bonds is driving the price of food staples up and creating food shortages in some parts of the world.

Trying to predict who the nation will embrace in November using historical data is an exercise in futility. The democratic nominee will be running primarily against Bush’s ideology, secondarily against McCain’s record. Inflation and the erosion of wealth have kicked middle class America in the teeth. We will see in November who America embraces.

Actually…voters DO want “Liberals” as they saw what they got by voting for “Dubya” the last two times…

It’s only GA and some other states that still elect idiots (republicans)… I did my own little study…when you look at the ranking of SAT scores…and then look at who voted republican in the last major election (2006)…it was the ones at the “bottom of the barrel” tht voted repubican… seems to me that the MOST educated states (those with the best test scores)…voted…LIBERAL…

and just to let you know…LIBERAL..for those of you that try to use it as a “dirty word”…is something we wear as a badge of honor…for it’s you “dummies” (based on the states test scores) that vote republican…

Hmmmmm…. funny how those states also have the most “talibangelicals”…you know…those that think the bible is what most of our laws are based off of…

Actually..there are only “2” of the 10 commandmants which are laws…thou shalt not kill…and thou shat not steal…all the others…are voodooooooooooo~~~~!!!!

But than again..ALL religion is Voodoo!

so again…yes…voters DO embrace us liberals…as these are facts: -the stock market has ALWAYS performed better under liberals…

Clinton added nearly 100,000 jons per month more then that IDIOT did during the 80’s (your pope…ronald mc’donald)…

Clinton ruled the largest economic run of in the entire USA’s history…that is a fact! He was handed a deficit and handed over a surplus….

we NOW have the largest deficit in our history…thanks to the policies of Dubya and friends…

we are “hated” around the world (when we were once loved)…

we have dollar lower in value during any other time in it’s history…

to those of you that voted for dubya…TWICE!!! i can only hope you suffer a significant economic personal pain yourself…you deserve too…

gays are still gay…abortion is still legal (why you voted for him)…and here is the history oif our greatest economic expansion:

Here’s the way he explains it…”Political expediency!” “Patriotic veteran”…There are a lot of (US)those…

Is that why in all your wisdom you voted for Dubya over Kerry? One who skipped out on his flight physical…While the other was earning the SILVER STAR.

Catholics 4 Hillary!

McCain seems but a whisp of whisper when contrasted next to Hillary or Obama. I’ve seen more vigor in a bowl of soup.

It’s still too early to really know what the nations mood will be next November.

I dont like the argument that Obama is developing a teflon immunity after all the attacks from Hillary which may make him unbeatable in November.

First the pundits say Obama is damaged goods for all the gates he’s gone through, then they think he’s stronger for it. Sounds to me like they know how to sell soap.

What worries me is the 3 second attention span of voters. That they’re tuning in at all to the pundits is very disturbing.

ANd worse, have you ever listened to a street-conservative, (redneck), today talk politics? It’s all Vitalis and Vitriole and Vitamin P.

American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Project for the New American Century (PNAC) and American Enterprise Institute (AEI), are just some of the insidious Washington bureaucrats with Zionist motives. They are relentless in their efforts to further their agenda of Middle Eastern dominance through the use of America’s military strength and economic wealth.

Israel is a democracy in name only. The government does not treat their Arab citizenry equally, has enslaved the Palestinian people and created a condition of deliberate human apartheid between the Gaza strip and the West Bank. Jewish people around the world must reject these Zionists who do not secure the safety of Israel, but instead create regional instability through fear, threats of military action and theft of Palestinian property.

Zionists have many covert operatives in government, business, media and the entertainment industry; all working in a coordinated fashion to effect their will. Their goal is to manipulate the minds of the American people into believing that serving Israel’s government is in America’s best interest. They want themselves to be viewed as an extension of American sovereignty in the Middle East.

They only way to stop them controlling our government is to demand the end of the annual financial subsidization of billions of dollars to prop up the Zionist war machine. Israel is not a state within our Union or a territory. Let them stand on their own. 4/23/2008 12:46:06 PM Recommended (1) Report Abuse Discussion Policy

But to slander all Jews with some bizarre, lunatic, and ridiculous conspiracy theory is, to put it mildly, asinine and idiotic. All the evidence points to al Qaeda as the perpetrator of 9/11. The Mossad may have known that something was up (see “What Did Israel Know in Advance of the 9/11 Attacks?” By Christopher Ketcham (CounterPunch, May 7, 2007). But to say they executed the attacks is totally unsupported by any evidence. Francesco Cossiga has offered no evidence for this. Just a bald assertion. And the President of Italy is a symbolic office, with no political authority. How would he even be in a position to know?

Some of the 19 9/11 hijackers are alive? Do you seriously expect anyone to believe this? Did they pull out their subspace communicators and say “Beam me up, Scotty” and use a Star Trek transporter to leave the hijacked airliners just before they crashed? Are you sure Klingon DNA wasn’t found on the remains of the hijackers? Or maybe it was the Cylons. Yeah, that makes sense, They’d just download into a new body on a nearby resurrection ship. Frakkin’ Cylons pulled off 9/11! The 5th Hidden Cylon is Abe Foxman! Call Admiral Adama!

Americans are beginning to realize that the Jewish conspiracy is real. Take another look at 9/11 and who really was involved. According to former President of Italy, Francesco Cossiga, Italian intelligence says Mossad and Zionist traitors executed the operation. He’s not the only one in authority who has the courage to say this. General Hamid Gul of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence and Andreas von Bulow of German intelligence say the same thing.

The Federal Bureau of Israel still shows that 19 Arabs executed the suicide operation despite that some of them turned out to be alive. This fact doesn’t seem to penetrate the FBI’s counterterrorist people, however. For those who don’t know, the Israelis have been caught stealing passports and framing Arabs in the past. Anyone paying attention to who’s in our government knows the ‘Neocons’ are overwhelmingly Jews.

I suppose this is the point where some lying Jew or duped non-Jew calls me an ‘anti-Semite’. Let me point out, however, that this term is merely a smokescreen to hide their organized criminal activities, their devious attempts to take control of our legal system and government, not to mention the monopolization over our money supply through the scam known as the Federal Reserve.

jbmlaw@2:30 - No flaw in the logic. I limited my sample set to the top two vote getters (the difference being 543,146).

If I were to widen the sample set to include “all candidates” (including Harry Browne), the 2,883,105 votes for Ralph Nader (a liberal) combined with the votes cast for Al Gore indicate that in the 2000 election, more than 50% of the American public favored a “liberal” to a “conservative”.

Mr. Wooten’s point was that a liberal cannot win the american presidency and he used Al Gore as an example. To refute that point, I reminded him that more than 500,000 more people voted for Al Gore than for George Bush in 2000.

As for your vote for Harry Browne, that indicates you thought neither Bush or Gore worth a bucket of warm spit.

“Nation’s voters don’t embrace liberals.”

Wooten’s title is exactly right. Except for, y’know, all those millions of voters, all across the nation… embracing LIBERAL candidates in record numbers.

But aside from that, he’s spot-on! (snicker)

Wooten may not think America is ready to elect a liberal, but he forgets the math.

Liberal voters + Ignorant voters (he’s for change, he’s so eloquent, etc.) = Obama.

It’s the powerful liberal/ignorant bloc.

Dear jm @ 2:54, your pithy analysis of my 2000 motivation is too close to correct for me to deny. I’m just not a “compassionate” sort of guy.

Can a leftist be elected? Yes, the big urban states alone are probably sufficient to make it possible. Routinely a conservative would start with a big advantage in the electoral votes that are a “lock”, but since there is no conservative in place this year there are few guarantees for anyone. Toss the conventional wisdom.

Dear Skeptic @ 3:14, bitterness is reserved as a leftist emotion, but you are otherwise correct about conservative lack of enthusiasm for Mr. McCain. I know, for me, only the presence of Ted Olson, to recommend court nominees, is a reason to vote for Mr. McCain. I have a much larger number of reasons to vote against either Mr. Obama or Ms. Clinton. Conservatives may wish to review “Nash equilibrium” before the next presidential nominations.

Still fussing and fuming over lost elections and other defeats. I guess they never heard of “poor losers”. They just show us what they look like.

Next they will PROVE that the planes that bombed Pearl Harbor were NOT really Japanese but REPUBLICANS. Yes! Yes! That will come right after they prove that Kerry’s purple hearts were miscounted. The ones he threw over the White House fence were not included.

Now…back to Boswell’sLife of Johnson. (The library is nearby.) As Boswell said “I remain firm and confident in my opinion” and he suggested he would not be moved by the”petty exercise of ridicule, by men of superficial understanding and ludicrous fancy.”

How about that. Boswell already knew about liberals back in 1709.

Jim,

I don’t know why the Democrats don’t understand that they can’t win with Hillary or Barack, but I suspect it has something to do with Bush Derangement Syndrome—-which, as hoped, is playing wonderfully in favor of the GOP. Unfortunately I’ve known quite well some godawfully hardcore Democratic political consultants, and they’ve put two-and-two together and are FREAKED OUT. But try explaining it to the Democratic rank-and-file? Well, you’ve tried it; how’s it worked out for you?

You were right, and they were dead wrong: Barack’s mouth took Pennsylvania off the table. He squandered with his mouth a hellacious amount of money he took mostly from people who couldn’t well afford it just now, even though his people must’ve known after his episode of Nob Hill Hauteur reached the wrong living rooms that it would be diminishing returns in the Alleghenies. That kind of profligacy is not kosher.

jbm, you’re a Donna Summer man? Really? She can come as she is to my Casbah anytime she likes just for singing “I Feel Love”, but I’m more a Lisa Stansfield hustler myself. That woman’s going to marry me some day. Ever hear her duets with her hero Barry White? OMG. They could eroticize even Hillary Clinton.

If you were not locked up in you own delusional world, you would see conservatives are punishing those in power for their failures. This would never happen in the “librul” world. You would celebrate them regardless. I guess the President of the United States receiving a Bl** job in the White House makes Clinton better than Bush. Then lying about it…that is criminal. However you “libruls” continue to celebrate both Clintons. Now there is Obama!!! He has religion of some sort. Do not you “libruls” despise religion? There can be no God in progressive liberalism. McCain would be a better choice of any conservative or librul running for president. I would vote on it…

Dusty, when you’re finished with Life of Johnson, you owe it to yourself to pick up Johnson without Boswell, by the late *Sunday Times literary critic Hugh Kingsmill. It’s even funnier, and like Boswell’s Johnson, Kingsmill’s is quirky, cranky and oddly pious. (Johnson’s prayers are some of my favorites.)

Kingsmill, BTW, absorbed from Johnson a lot of the traditionalist’s distaste for liberals, whom he called “Dawnists”—-meaning that they were forever awaiting or even promising (a la mode Obama) a bright new dawn. The comedy inherent in this is, to me, the essence of Dr. Johnson.

Wonderful stuff.

Yesterday I watched part of the speeches that were given by George Bush, Stephen Harper and Felipe Calderon at the conclusion of the North American Leaders’ Summit. I watched Stephen Harper of Canada give a concise speech on the issues discussed during the summit in French and in then again in English. Then it was George Bush’s turn. It was such an embarrassment. All he could say in his staccato, broken, pidgin English was that NAFTA is good for you, good for North America and without it we would have a bunch more Mexicans crossing the border illegally. Please deliver us from the horrible mistake we voters made twice in a row.

“Macarthur Park”, by the way, was written (and recorded) by the highly gifted and surprisingly sophisticated songwriter Jimmy Webb (“Wichita Lineman”, “The Moon’s a Harsh Mistress”). Richard Harris’ hit recording of Mac Park seems to have been intended to out-schmaltz the unctuous Anthony Newley, who was then at the peak of his popularity. And had Newley covered the song with, say, The Moody Blues, that’s probably what it would have sounded like. Perhaps because Harris was Irish and had played King Arthur in “Camelot”, it seems not to have come to the producer’s attention that Mr. Harris was possessed of something less than native singing talent. While the man could act, and masterfully, even while laboring under an alcoholized stupor, he couldn’t sing his way into the Witness Protection Program if he turned up with Hoffa’s union card.

Too bad, because it’s a good song, Mac Park. Nice bridge, surprising and meaningful chord changes—-both Webb hallmarks. Need a big range to sing it. Give a listen to one of Webb’s recordings of it. It’s not meant to be as Paul Williams as the composition sounds in the Harris version. It’s so film-score melodramatic that you’d want an ultra-efficient vocalist—-and there aren’t many of those who have huge ranges and can belt (Jarreau? Meat Loaf?)—-but it’s not meant as more than a whiskey song—-a man’s torch song. Harry Nilsson might’ve pulled it off. Cocker would be interesting.

The Supreme Court rendered an opinion today that allows the police to use evidence in an illegal arrest and convict you of the infraction using illegally seized evidence.
