Hanging mailman, here we come

Hard to imagine that Democratic presidential politics could get any more bizarre, but party leaders are now suggesting a Florida re-vote with the primary being conducted by the U.S. Postal Service.

A mail-in primary is “actually a very good process,” said DNC Chairman Howard Dean on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “Every voter gets a ballot in the mail. It’s comprehensive. You get to vote if you’re in Iraq or in a nursing home. It’s not a bad way to do this.”

The party is desperate, of course, to get out of the box it’s in. Hillary won Florida, and Michigan too for that matter, and has a legitimate claim to the 313 delegates. The national party withheld delegates because the two states elected to vote earlier than the national party wanted. Barack Obama chose not to have his name listed on the Michigan ballot. The choice there was either Hillary or uncommitted. Hillary won — but not by a landslide.

Who pays for a re-do, which would cost an estimated $6 million? The party, for sure, with money Dean says it needs for the fall campaign against John McCain. Republican Gov. Charlie Crist has made it plain that the state won’t bail out the Dems.

Michigan’s Democratic Sen. Carl Levin noted Sunday that “There’s some real problems” with a mail-in ballot. “Not just cost, but the security issue. How do you make sure that hundreds of thousands, perhaps a million or more ballots can be properly counted and that duplicate ballots can be avoided?”

Hanging chads, hanging mailman, here we come. Republicans really should not get too down about their prospects in November. Watching Democrats in Congress and in politics offers some reassurance that the party will over-play or misplay every advantage.

And that’s good for the country. Can anybody really imagine Barack Obama as commander in chief?

So Wooten likes to smirk at the mischief created by the Florida Republican legislature, which moved the Democratic primary up while knowing that doing so would likely disqualify the result. And now Crist and his fellow Republicans are insisting that the state not pay for a do-over.

And now, according to Wooten, the Democratic party ought to count the results of two primaries in which the leading candidates did not campaign. In Michigan, Obama, trusting in the integrity of Howard Dean, wasn’t even on the ballot.

Once again the stupidity of Howard Dean comes to the fore. He knew what the Florida Republicans were doing, and yet he placed the blame squarely on the Florida Democratic Party.

Well, smirk all you want. It won’t save the Republicans in November, when we’ll be in a full-blown recession. And the do-overs, whether by mail or otherwise, won’t save Hillary Clinton. Dick Morris is right: she’s dead regardless. Meantime, John McCain is happily invisible for months to come while the country’s attention is riveted on the Democratic nomination battle.

SlickHill&Bill were a disgrace from the first night they jumped on the beds in my White House until the day they left while selling pardons and stealing furniture.

SlickHill wants her White House Experience to put her back in the White House. Let us all remember during her occupation she testified over 1000 times that she, “Did not know, did not remember, did not recall” when asked questions during various scandal investigations. Since she did not know anything that was going on when she was there why should we consider this relevant experience now?

SlickHill has the White House Machine to get her carpetbagged into the Senator from my home state of New York and she has paid off everybody with jobs, perks, contracts and who knows what else, to keep it.

SlickHill surrounds herself with Federal Secret Service so all of us, the unwashed masses, cannot get close to her. But in her hypocritical fashion, when the cameras are on her she is waving, throwing kisses and touching her heart while she mouths “I love you” to her campaign crowds.

Why we allow our elected officials to feed off the taxpayer trough with salaries, staff, perks, expenses, fringes and pensions while they are derelict in one position while they campaign for another is beyond me. When SlickHill loses she can keep all her remunerations from New York State and go back to a job she obviously does not want and only took in the first place to make this run.

I may not know a lot about Obama but I know enough about this Clinton Co-Presidency that I do not ever want it back in my White House.

*Curious Observer * Lets be honest!

It was a Democrat Florida State Senator, not a Republican, who introduced the bill calling for the early primary. Not only that, but every single Democrat in the Florida Senate voted in favor of moving the primaries. The Democrats put the legislation on the table – and the Democrats hammered it through.

So, in the Republican mind, an open primary contest is somehow “a party in disarray/meltdown/implosion,” eh?

I guess they’ve gotten so used to having no choices that the existence of a REAL debate caught them off-guard.

Good morning all. Many issues raised in the morning essay.

(1) The mail-in primary strikes me as a brilliant idea, and I applaud the democrats who conceived it. I cannot imagine why independent voters should be obliged to subsidize the costs of party primaries in the first place. While the internet also strikes me as a plausible alternative, the old fashioned technology - mail-in – seems a reasonable choice for voting. Ballot box stuffing would be a theoretical problem either way, but at least there is a real cost incurred in mailing in a ballot.

(2) Democrats in Congress may be lampoons of leadership, but the American voter does not notice. (Of course conservatives notice, but we are always aware of evil among the overlord class. The average democrat voter is not engaged at all, and moderates do not play catch-up until the week before an election.) About the only thing that would galvanize the American voters against the leftists would be another hard-leftist Supreme Court ruling, along the lines of Kelo. There are a few potential such issues out there, but none that I would expect to be so foolishly insensitive to the freedoms of the individual. I anticipate a stealth campaign by democrats, simply to conceal what they stand for. (”Change.”) Only by hiding their agenda can they be elected, and power is what they covet most of all, not legitimacy. Note the contrast with conservatives, whose focus is generally on morality and freedom, even to the point of a willingness to punt an election rather than to cast an illegitimate vote.

(3) I can imagine Hussein as commander in chief. I cannot imagine a successful administration, a la Carter, but I can imagine him there. That would certainly lay the groundwork for another conservative extremist along the lines of a Reagan. I today declare my candidacy for the 2012 Republican nomination for president of the United States. (Of course if Glenn or Jim Wooten also declare, I will withdraw immediately – concession to a better man, you understand.)

I couldn’t imagine Jesse Ventura as a governor, but it happened. So, yes, I can imagine Obama as commander in chief. I also know we would survive. It would take more than him to doom our nation. Hillary would be far worse. That said, I’m still voting for McCain.

What does anyone think, since she doesn’t blog, about Cindy Tucker’s assertion the U.S. must rein in its military spending and settle into a European style economy or face a declining future? I don’t dismiss her hypotheses out of hand. But I also don’t know first-hand if the more “mature” democracies of Europe are as idylic as she seems to assert.

Well, I’m with jbmlaw. Let’s just do mail-in elections everywhere. That way we won’t have to deal with the trouble of absentee voting or getting off of work to vote. And a husband can make sure his wife votes they way he wants her to vote. You never know these days what a woman is going to do when she gets in a voting booth. Joe Bill lit all up when he heard the idea. He figures its a sure-fire way of being able to buy votes again and making sure you get what you pay for. Joe Bill, he ain’t got over losing the county commission race.

Of course we will need to find some way of making Those People show picture ID before they get their ballot in the mail. Maybe the postman could do it. Just don’t deliver the ballot if the fambly can’t show a picture ID. I figure the voting would take a little longer, what with the P.O. losing or misplacing mail all the time. But if you mess up your 1st ballot you can just have lots of copys around to do it again. Or maybe vote three or four times. I figure its one way of making sure a godly Republican stays in the White House, what with the recession and all and a librul on the Republican ticket to keep godly conservatives home.

Anyhow, there was a ruckus down at the Church of Holiness yesterday a.m. The Rev. Postlewaite was telling us all how important it was to vote the way God wants us to vote and not put a godless person in the White House. Well, this fambly of Those People just joined the church and they started raising a big fuss. Claiming the Reverend was telling people not to vote for a Democrat and how it is against the law to do that. Anyway, we like to never got things settled down again. They might even raise a fuss about us meeting at the church on election day and marching off to vote together. Its what happens when you don’t screen people before you let them join a church.

Have a good day everybody. I’m awful glad this Rufus or AJC Management or Duh or whatever he calls hisself won’t be here today to hog all the space.

Dear One @ 9:57, leftists have always used government controls to tilt the economy in favor of their investments. Why do you ascribe higher motives to Mr. Buffet? Certainly I cannot imagine a free-market type supporting Hildebeest or Hussein, but I would be receptive to your argument that democrats make markets freer.

Dear Peter @ 10:43, the same way we would pay for twin towers being leveled every month, the same way we would pay for buring 3,000 premature deaths every month. Why don’t you leftists understand the war goes on against us, whether we oppose it or not? Of course, now that President Bush, in one of his two conservative actions, has almost wiped out al Qaeda, your argument almost makes sense.

Hillary does not have a legitimate claim to 313 delegates in Florida and Michigan. The primaries were held in violation of the rules that everyone agreed to before the primary season started. Howard Dean told us that he wanted smaller states to have a chance to vote before big delegate states like Florida and Michigan. His strategy had the desired effect. The smaller states have give a candidate momentum. Florida and Michigan blew it for themselves and the party. Were it not for the high cost associated with a primary election they would have a do-over in a heartbeat. I can’t imagine a scenario where the superdelegates would vote in favor of a candidate that received the fewest elected delegates. I think that Hillary is whizzing in the wind.

The Rev. Al Sharptongue is collecting signatures from Democrats in Florida who chose to stay home during the primary because they understood the vote wouldn’t count. The good Rev. is planning to use the signatures in a lawsuit against the DNC, in the event the votes are counted.

In other news, Mr. 5% Ron Paul is reserving the right to re-enter the race in the event of a re-vote in Florida and Michigan. He doesn’t care that it’s a Democratic primary. He and the only Paul supporter remaining in Georgia, the dogged Jeff, will keep running right up until a new incumbent is sworn into the presidency. Paul has sworn to get rid of the federal government even if doing so costs him anything to govern.

Case closed. Under the Sharptongue threat, the DNC will cave like a cheap boy scout tent in a thunderstorm.

Bush Jr. is doing what any good son would do for his father. Saddam had a likeness of Bush Sr. on the ground for everyone to trample — the ultimate public disgrace — day after day after day after day. Bush Jr. saw his chance to right that wrong and he took it. After all, he was just right across the border in Afghanistan. Heck, he could’ve had a dead terrorist thrown over the border in order to provide justification for an invasion if he wanted. Oh Look! A terrorist in Iraq! After tearing up the likeness on the ground, he proceeded to pulling down that statue for all to trample. So, why are we still having such a hard time being treated as liberators? Maybe some of those military types and politicians that were around during the Gulf War can help explain that. By the way, where did this Saddam guy come from in the first place? Hmmmmmm.

The Florida vote, if it involves mailing your vote, is better than no vote at all. The Repubs in the Florida House, along with Gov. Charlie Crist, perpetuated this fiasco and the dumb Dems fell for it. Just like the Repubs stole the election in 2000, they are trying to create chaos with the current nomination process. Guess this will not work either. As typical, the Repubs are trying to “throw the rock and hide their smelly hands.” Even if one has to mail in their ballot, especially those in the military, of which the Repubs refused to allow a count during 2000, it matters not. This is a vote for the nomination of the Dems candidate. If the Dems were smart, they would collect money to pay for the election and move this attempt to disenfranchise Florida voters from the front pages. The Karl Rove involvement in the jailing of Alabama gubernatorial candidate Don Seigleman is going to be the biggest story of the year. How is it the Federal Court judge in Alabama, a Bush loyalist, CAN NOT FIND THE TRANSCRIPT TO THE TRIAL FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR; HOW IS IT THAT MORE THAN 52 FORMER AND CURRENT ATTORNEY GENERALS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY HAVE FILED AN AMECIUS BRIEF WITH THE COURT TO HAVE THIS TRAVESTY REVIEWED BY THE APPELATE COURT. THE PRESIDING JUDGE SAYS THE COURT TRANSCRIPT CAN NOT BE FOUND, THEREFORE , NO APPEAL CAN BE FILED. One thing is for sure…. we have made Al Qaeda stronger, buy attacking Iraq, we have enraging more Muslims, thus giving Al Qaeda a better opportunity to do what the US Army cannot effective do today…

That would be Recruit more members…

Please let me know how attacking Iraq has made our country srtonger?

YOUR POINT ?

Just because you think as a lemming does and go along with the failed policy of this president, doesn’t make you or anyone more PRO- American, or any better a citizen of this country.

In fact logic would have you less of a citizen…… as you watch this country once proud, strong, and economically viable go into recession.

You should be MORE considerate of your fellow citizen, Rich, middle income and the poor, and those in need……

Instead you continue to say nothing, but show a total lack of compassion for other American citizens that are having a tough time.

When are you going to prove on this blog you are actually an American standing together with other Americans to better this country…..and NOT rape the helpless in OUR America with your business practices ?

jbmlaw thinks that we are in a recession because of the possible expiration of tax breaks. I heard Warren Buffet cannot wait to get rid of the Republicans. Maybe he thinks that some people have had it too easy with the low taxes. Maybe he thinks that people like jbmlaw have not been paying their fair share. I’ll take Buffet’s opinion over jbmlaw’s any day unless jbmlaw can start providing better stock market returns than Buffet.

Dear Copyleft @ 3:08, while you are the first to ask that question today, it is a worthy inquiry, and I’ll honor it with my genius. I think we would all agree that Osama (the real one, not the dem candidate) was offered to Bill Clinton by the Sudanese during a lull between their various genocides, and the legalists in the Clinton administration argued that the US had no basis to hold him. The official policy of the democrats was not to prevent terrorism, but merely to prosecute it in a court of law after the fact. Your argument in favor of a single-minded pursuit of Osama is consistent with that philosophy.

Give me credit here, I criticize all of those domestic deals President Bush did with democrats, but this new terrorism policy, and the tax cuts, merit conservative support. President Bush, rather than simply respond to the 9/11 attack, determined to do the heavy lifting: to wipe out a generation of freelance killers roaming throughout the world. We conservatives call this “connecting the dots.” While he could have engaged a Pancho Villa search in the mountains of Afghanistan, he elected to raise the ante substantially, by setting up an attack base in the heartland of the movement – an intentional provocation. He drew al Qaeda, formerly dispersed all over the world, into a single area smaller than California, and let the Marines do what Marines do best. The policy worked, initially beyond his expectations, but the military surged to the present near-total victory. We understand that democrats think this unfair, and would unilaterally withdraw troops to allow al Qaeda to rebuild itself. After all, they would not want to win over the terrorists when the victory is in sight.

Ah just luv seeing a dirty stining lawyer go down in flames: NEVER, EVER TRUST A LAWYER, THEY ARE ALL CROOKS, SOME JUST HIDE IT BETTER THAN OTHERS. That said, prostitution should be legal, it would allow all women to make an honest living, and relieve men of the burden of marriage…Yes, it is better to RENT than to OWN, but this is always confusing to people. Men should be able to rent women by the unit of time. If a man marries a woman, then the WOMAN OWNS him. Oh well, hand spitzer and all his fellow lying, cheating, thieving fellow lawyers, from the highest tree….

Dear Copyleft @ 3:08, I realize I neglected to address one specific concern you raise: what about Osama? A visionary leader has a choice of creating a martyr to a movement, or destroying a movement and leaving its founder dispirited. I understand you prefer the former strategy, but a vicious conservative prefers the latter.

A suicide bomber in Iraq just killed 5 more US solder. The taxpayers in this country should realize the we spend an average of $5,400 PER SECOND in Iraq, of which ALL IS BORROWED. I wonder if a tax cut is going to pay for the $10 TRILLION dollar debt that has been accumulated by these criminals? News further reported that Cheyney is being sent to the Middle East to broker a peace deal between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Is Condi sick, or, does Cheyney have the “magic button?”

Dear Peter @ 3:22, you sadly reveal that you do not know the definition of a recession, much less have any concept of the causation. Banking is a lagging indicator of recessions, not a leading indicator, except in circumstances such as the TEFRA recession of 1987, where government actions were the causation. You foolishly believe that prospective government policy changes do not cause businessmen to scale back – I guess you assume businessmen are not as smart as the politicians. Suggest you review the relationship of Smoot Hawley and the crash of 1929 – the crash occurred in anticipation of the legislation, but was worldwide. No, the present looming recession is directly related to the coming tax increase. (In all fairness to our friend Deegee who has chronicled the Fed’s foolish weak dollar policy, that weak dollar policy is directly related to the housing bubble now collapsing.) If the misleaders of the democrat party suddenly come to their senses, and renew the Bush tax cuts, the “recession” will be over in 24 hours. These stupid little tax rebates do nothing to encourage business to expand, but that is a typical democrat response – try to fool most of the people most of the time.

As to your silly argument on al Qaeda, they are surely acknowledging that any more such help from President Bush and they will be dead.

Hey JBMLAW….read this…….

CNBC Billionaire Investor Sees Bank Failures Ahead Monday March 10, 10:52 am ET

Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross says the current market downturn differs from previous slumps in that no American banks have yet failed this time, but he suggests that’s about to change. “I think that’s going to be the next wave, and coupled with problems in the commercial real estate market; I think they’ll be the next bubbles that burst,” the chairman and CEO of W. L. Ross and Company told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in an exclusive interview.

He was asked about the risks to big banks.

“I think that the big banks won’t fail in the sense that they will go to zero and depositors would lose money,” Ross replied. “I think the Fed and other regulators will make things happen.| I think it’s the medium-sized banks, and particularly some of those that got overextended with the subprime and other kind of mortgage debt.| I think those are the ones that had the serious mismatch, making 20- and 30-year loans based on 90-day deposits.”

Ross’s comments echo those made by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who told a Senate committee on Feb. 28 that some smaller regional banks that heavily invested in real estate could go under.

Ross and other high-profile investors have made recent moves in the credit markets, explaining that they have done so to snap up bargains. Last week it was reported that Ross had invested $1 billion into municipal bonds.

In the meantime, Ross said he didn’t think the U.S. economy would recover any time soon.

“I think at best we’re in for stagflation,” Ross said, referring to the combination of higher inflation and weak economic growth. “I think the consumer has been tapped out for quite a while and is frightened by the poverty effect of seeing the house go down.”

Straightening out the problems in the bond industry, particularly the situation of the insurers who backstop bond offerings, would go a long way toward fixing the current paralysis in the credit markets, Ross intimated. That process is underway, he suggested, with the current reassessment by ratings agencies of the bond insurers.

I guess you are smarter than this guy…and Warren Buffet as well……

The definition of a recession is still two or more consecutive quarters of declining GDP (negative economic growth). Until a new definition is agreed upon, we are not currently in a recession. Nor (this is for you jbmlaw) were we in a recession during the early years of the Bush Administration (which is wrongly called the “Clinton Recession”).

All info for JBMLAW…….

With Barack Obama surging in state primaries and polls indicating the November presidential contest is the Democrats’ to lose (Obama has a five-point lead over John McCain, according to RealClearPolitics), market bloggers have begun speculating what an Obama White House could mean for the market — and how to position portfolios accordingly.

Democrats and the Markets

• From the left: Kris Tuttle of Research 2.0 believes a November Obama victory could “materially change the world perception of the United States, which has suffered terribly under the Bush/Cheney administration.” For Wall Street, that would mean “a little less uncertainty and an improved appetite for things American, including the dollar, [to] help the market recover over time.”

• From the right: Donald Luskin at SmartMoney, an “unpaid economic advisor to Senator McCain,” compares data from prediction market Intrade.com to equities’ performance over the past couple months to conclude that “stocks have absorbed the high probability that the next president will be a Democrat. … at first stocks were frightened by the rising prospect that the Democratic nominee might be Barack Obama. But … stocks have now changed their minds — they now prefer Obama to be the nominee instead of Hillary Clinton.”

• Penn State University professor John Mason comments that at this stage, the central bank is damned if it does cut rates, and damned if it doesn’t: “The Fed has had to deal with financial market dislocation and the fear of a recession. It also has the falling value of the dollar to deal with.” This leaves Bernanke and company “out of its comfort zone.”

• Finally, Wall Street veteran Barry Ritholtz says oil crossing $100 a barrel this week was “a 2-by-4 across the skull” to those who believed lowering interest rates in a slowing economy would somehow contain inflation. Rather, Ritholtz says we’re “inflating our way into recession.”

Obama winning in all categories. While the Clinton Campaign continues to brag about big state wins, let us look closely at these so called “big state wins”. Here are the top nine contests.

State Obama Clinton California 2,126,000 2,553,000 Texas 1,358,000 1,459,000 New York 698,000 1,003,000 Illinois 1,302,000 662,000 Ohio 982,000 1,212,000 Georgia 704,000 330,000 New Jersey 492,000 603,000 Virginia 627,000 350,000 Washington 354,000 316,000

Final Total 8,643,000 8,487,000

Now that you see actual numbers, look at the poor showing in Clinton’s own home state of New York. Again, goes back to why she had to run ads in her backyard and Obama did not. He did not have the pressure, heat from the Clinton ground swell in his backyard, as Clinton did hers.

Now everyone understands why the large 125+ pledged delegate advantage that Obama has over Clinton. Her campaign went dark, virtually dead while she allowed Obama to run the table on her and run the numbers up on her for 12 straight loses, thus she will never catch up unless she has a 60/40 split on every single election from here on out. It won’t happen.

Also, remember that in the machine driven states, meaning top/down states that Clinton won, it was due to influenced by the old style politics of being chit driven, i.e., Ohio, New Jersey and the mayor of Los Angeles. Using their machine and getting the vote out. It was not driven by people powered politics of the roots. Is this a good way to win elections? Yes. It is the old fashioned normal way of doing things, but the result is the end result. They were unable to blow Obama out of the water on Super Tuesday of February 5th and Jr. Super Tuesday of March 4th. Again, he stayed close enough and won big elsewhere to offset any Clinton win.

So, what is this really about? Perception Politics. That is what this is about. The Clinton Campaign floating around that they will accept Barack Obama as their VP candidate, when in reality, it is she who is craving to be on the ticket with Obama, not the other way around. Why? How?

Obama leads Clinton as follows:

a) Delegates b) Primaries c) Caucuses d) Money Raised e) Donors f) Votes from big states g) Popular votes h) Senator endorsements i) Governor endorsements j) Most states won

NC and MS Superdelegates Endorse Obama Today! North Carolina Superdelegate: Joyce Brayboy has endorsed Barack Obama.

The Democratic superdelegate, whose day job is as a Washington, D.C.-based lobbyist, made the decision recently.

Previously, she told Dome that she would study both candidates’ electability and their stances on health care and education before making a decision. U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield and two other superdelegates, Everett Ward and Dannie Montgomery, are also backing Obama…

Mississippi Superdelegate: Jackson, MS – Today, Mississippi Superdelegate and Democratic National Committee Member Everett Sanders endorsed Barack Obama, citing his plan to provide affordable health care coverage to every American, improve education and his leadership on Katrina.

Mr. Sanders said, “I believe Senator Barack Obama is the best choice to lead our nation today and bring change that we can believe in here in Mississippi and across the country. He has a plan to provide affordable health care coverage to every single American and put tax cuts in the pockets of middle class families. He believes that every single child in our country deserves a world class education and has fought to make higher education more affordable in the United States Senate, increasing Pell Grants and securing better recognition for our HBCU’s and black colleges. He has a plan to help the Gulf Coast rebuild and has fought for the victims of Katrina here in Mississippi, passing legislation to investigate toxic trailers and leading the way for more funding for Katrina rebuilding. I’m proud to support Senator Obama in this campaign.”

Did you notice how the conservatives always tout tax cuts as the cure to whatever ails the economy?

Why of course they do, Jackie. Their argument cuts both ways. They can claim that without their tax cuts there will be no savings to provide capital for investment. And they can also claim that without their tax cuts there will be no investment and risk-taking to provide jobs.

The trouble comes when you pin them down. Savings right now are at historic lows, although the tax cuts have been in effect since 2003. One might think the well-heeled among us would be saving like crazy. And exactly what job-producing investments have they been making with their tax cuts, given the historic loss of manufacturing jobs during this administration and the outsourcing? Perhaps they have been investing in China and India.

The tax cuts for the wealthy will be gone at the end of 2010. I daresay we could have done better economically had their taxes been doubled during the past five years. We could not possibly have done worse.

@Curious Observer,

I have a simple scenario that would suit the conservatives. The Congress could write legislation that would allow all of those whose choose to opt out of paying taxes and make ALL services a pay-as-you-use system. For instance, if you choose to opt out of tax payment, you would have to pay to use the roads whenever you used the roads. We could use GPS and other tracking devices embedded in your car to determine when, where and how long those taxable roads are being used. We would have the dilemma of when to bill them for this service. Same situation would apply to fire, police, mail, television, radio, even sewage. The conservatives need to understand that if you have a port-a-potty or a antique urinal, it still takes the same material. STOP FLUSHING THOSE TOILETS CONSERVATIVES WITHOUT PAYING FIRST!!!!!!!
