Name Thomas County for Justice

It’s not exactly in the vicinity of Pinpoint, Ga., birthplace of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. But it’s close.

While we’re in the business or renaming roads, schools, airports and other real estate, my recommendation to the Georgia General Assembly is that Thomas County in Southwest Georgia be renamed for the reknown pioneer Georgian, Clarence Thomas. It’s far too complicated to rename his birthplace, Chatham County. Deeds, contracts, records, etc.

The existing Thomas County is named for Jett Thomas whose claim to fame is that he was an officer in the War of 1812 and later oversaw construction of the State Capitol in Milledgeville and the first building at the University of Georgia. Thousands of later Georgians had similar accomplishments. Thomas, however, is unique. A Georgian of national prominence, he’s an independent-thinking black conservative ridiculed by the left, initially as a cipher in the shadow of Justice Antoine Scalia. The current liberal take is that he’s the perpetually angry man settling old scores. He’s certainly neither and his contribution will stand on its own. He would have made a fine Chief Justice.

Georgia should take two steps to honor Thomas. One is to erect a monument in the Capitol vicinity, even though he never served in state government. The other is to redesignate Thomas County in honor of the life and accomplishments of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. In fact, the people of Thomas County should rise up and insist on it.

Good morning all. I am an admirer of Justice Thomas. His writing is simple, brilliant, and speaks for itself. He truly is a trail-blazer, no less than Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, Bill Cosby, and Charlie Pride. (In fact, is there a “Robinson” county we could re-designate?) I have a bias against naming anything (other than county dumps or prisons) after politicians, but maybe I could rationalize re-designating the name of a county for an honorable intellectual born in this state.

Cobb Country was named for a soldier who died at Fredricksburg. Fulton county was named for a woman who, when photography was first in general use in 1848, gave the first traffic stopping, papparazzi-style photo op of her upper thighs as she dismounted a horse in front of a strip mall. I happen to have a copy of that photograph and it’s all Brittany-SPears-and-the-limo! Priceless photo. No lie. Too bad it’s too cool for me to share by putting a link in blue letters so that you all could enjoy the first photographic evidence that beavers ranged this far south, which, until that photo, had only been spotted in Chatanooga. BTW: I believe everyword Anita Hill said under oath. She is so hot, that who amoung us wouldn’t have planted one of our own pubes on that can of pepsi just to get the conversation going and gauge our chances with her after hours? When a fine man like Judge Thomas proves he’s not gay, we should reward him, not prosectute him. Hell, Judge Thomas showed many of us how to pick up girls, and I dont know about any of you, but I’ve used many of the techniques that Anita Hill outlined….i will bet that Clinton narrowed down his field of interns with the Thomas flair…..think about it.

I saw the Judge Thomas interview and he is a great man, and his wife is an amazing woman, and we have the right guy on the Supreme Court.

Thanks to jbmlaw for posting Walter Williams’ “Betrayal of the Civil Rights Struggle”. It was one of the first things I read this morning.

We could argue that Justice Thomas’s achievements have defeated the argument for affirmative action. Afterall, if Justice Thomas can grasp opportunities, what’s stopping other African Americans from doing the same?

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting the message put out by Democrats. African Americans need “their” (the elitist Democrat’s) assistance. And while they’re at it, they’ll create a class warfare structure that will enable them to champion the “poor” and “disenfranchised” that they helped to create through “hypnotic” suggestion.

A vicious circle that always leaves elected Democrats sitting in the catbird seat.

I don’t put any stock in Anita Hill these days. jbm’s link just addresses her and her allegations. Also, he seems to be tipping his hand as to how he’ll vote on issues that may reach the Court in the future. That is a big no no. I think it is a joke to rename a county after someone that has no connection to the place at all other than he shares the same name. No honour is too great to bestow on this superb humanitarian who is irrefutably a shining example to us all of just what robust rejection of black/liberal bigotry and free thinking intellectual honesty and selfless excellence in public servants can (and should) be.

Clarence Thomas is a product of Affirmative Action! He is a highly intelligent man that has anger management and gender relationship issues that appear to be a product of his very strict upbringing. For one to use Walter Williams to say that there is ample proof that Clarence Thomas came to his position in life because of reasons of his own efforts is not true. Clarence Thomas was able to get scholarships for undergraduate and law school because of help from the church and other organizations. His nomination to the Supreme Court was due to John Danforth (R-MO) and his enormous efforts to get his nomination through the Judiciary Committee. You have some folks trying to speak out both sides of their mouth when justification of this man is presented. Are you opposed to Affirmative Action? If so, Clarence Thomas should be the poster child of your vitriol. If you are for everyone reaching their potential based upon their merit, Clarence Thomas does not fit that criteria either. And, let us not think that Clarence Thomas is the sharpest knife in the “legal drawer.” Someone made the point that blacks tolerate “racebaiting” by Democrats. If Clarence Thomas and his ascension to the Supreme Court isn’t the height of “racebaiting”, I fail to realize what would constitute “racebaiting.”

jbm loves to foist the alleged “intellectuals” of the WSJ on us to support his arguments. Again, we are treated to the failed scribblings of Taranto, who is of Wootenesque caliber (i.e., a bb gun) when it comes to constructing a coherent argument based on fact. (Your beloved Dr Sowell rank even lower, if such a thing is possible.)

Okay, jbm…why did Thomas hire her if she is such a mediocrity… not once, but twice? How do we square her solidly conservative credentials (Oral Roberts faculty, associate in good standing at the time of her federal job offer, etc.) with Tom’s assertion that she is just another disgruntled employee and tool of the liberal hit machine?

Ever since Brock admitted that he fabricated the entire book that purported to “expose” Anita Hill as a slattern dimwit, and since several people have come forward since then to support HER depiction of Thomas as a serial harasser, no reasonable person has questioned her version of events. Only the most partisan hacks bother to try.

As for Justice Tom, he had no compunction about taking advantage of equal opportunity statutes when he was enrolling at Yale, or climbing the ranks of the fed bureaucracy. Why, you could say he was FOR affirmative action before he was against it.

One last comment and I’ll leave the feces slinging to the blog regulars…

It is amusing to see the way the extremist wingnuts are rallying to support their precious Rush. He was caught dead to rights denigrating troops who serve honorably. He then was caught scrubbing the transcript on his website to make the ‘context’ appear more forgiving. He then makes $h!t up about a veteran who is speaking out against him, mocking his injuries. Rush could give a rats A$$ about the troops, and he has made it crystal clear.

Most radical conservatives at least have the dignity to distance themselves (even if only a little bit) from the hateful idiocy of Ann Coulter, but somehow Rush always gets a pass, no matter how badly he behaves. Narcotic addict who forges prescriptions? No problem. Flaccid whale with ED (directly resulting from his Oxy addiction) who uses fake scrips to buy and smuggle Viagra? Hey, who doesn’t do that?

A venomous liar who insults troops who served honorably while he sits on his fat a$s in luxury. You can’t see a problem with that?

Have you radical wingnuts no shame at all?

ah, never mind…the answer is clear.

Has Thomas written any decision that we should take note of as an example of superior legal scholarship? Lord knows he gives no examples of his keen legal mind during oral arguments. It has been documented that he did not say one word during arguments during the last term of court. What has he done since being appointed to the court that would justify the adulation that Jim pours on him? Why would he have made an excellent Chief? It is not enough to just say. Damn, jbm tosses a softball I can’t resist.

Taranto’s column is useless as a source to refute of Hill’s assertions. Why Because it is based entirely upon Justice Tom’s book. No independent confirmation of his claims, just Taranto the chuzzlewit parroting what Thomas said really happened.

Hill’s story has been independently verified several times since the original testimony, including an exemplary piece of work by WSJ reporters (who are of a different breed and have infinitely more integrity than the circle jerks on the opinion page).

And how dare I refer to Taranto as a chuzzlewit? Reference this passage from his column: “Yesterday found us at the Heritage Foundation, which hosted a dinner for Thomas and some two dozen journalists and bloggers. We can’t remember if the Hill kerfuffle came up during the conversation…

What a load of bull$h!t. How can you read this without laughing out loud? If true, it shows that he is an idiot without a pair of brain cells to rub together. Or, he is a liar.

THE Captain wishes to prove that HE is an Independent Right Thinker, and offer this rare disapproval of a decision made by Our Leader.

Today, Our Leader vetoed the so-called SCHIP bill, which would have provided socialized communistic medical care for millions of uninsured so-called “children”. On its face, Our Leader was correct to veto this creeping Socialislamunistic liberal plot to undermine The Best Health Care System in the Whole World.

However, further analysis leads THE Captain to offer this observation. SCHIP is necessary to keep these so-called “children” healthy now so that they may serve as cannon fodder in the Permanent and Never Ending Global War on Terror and Swarthy Brown Peoples.

For a relative few pennies now, we will ensure sufficient supplies of Brave Troops in the future. Perhaps we can tie delivery of SCHIP services to a specific obligation to serve in the military upon reaching a reasonable age. I read recently that in WW2 Germany used troops as young as 15 years old, and they were quite the envy of the world at one time.

So now it is up to True Belief GOP legislators to override the veto and show their support for Our Leader’s Righteous Crusade.

It is the Right Thing to do.

Where is indignation of those who are concerned about the well-being of all citizens relating to Dubya’s veto of the SCHIP bill today? Secondly, what about the proposed “war tax” designed to bring some accountability to our fiscal house and the actual support of our troops? Far more important subject than ruminating about Clarence Thomas.

The ten cent competition for the day: who wrote the following concurrence in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris (and perhaps of greater significance, how could four lesser lights on the court disagree?), a case upholding the power of states to make a financial deal with parochial schools:

Frederick Douglass once said that “[e]ducation … means emancipation. It means light and liberty. It means the uplifting of the soul of man into the glorious light of truth, the light by which men can only be made free.” Today many of our inner-city public schools deny emancipation to urban minority students. Despite this Court’s observation nearly 50 years ago in Brown v. Board of Education, that “it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education,” urban children have been forced into a system that continually fails them. These cases present an example of such failures. Besieged by escalating financial problems and declining academic achievement, the Cleveland City School District was in the midst of an academic emergency when Ohio enacted its scholarship program. The dissents and respondents wish to invoke the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, as incorporated through the 14th, to constrain a State’s neutral efforts to provide greater educational opportunity for underprivileged minority students. Today’s decision properly upholds the program as constitutional, and I join it in full.

Why do Black Americans consider Thomas an Uncle Tom? Well let’s look at the definition:

Uncle Tom is a pejorative for an African American who is perceived by others as behaving in a subservient manner to White American authority figures, or as seeking ingratiation with them by way of unnecessary accommodation.

It is commonly used to describe black people whose political views or allegiances are considered by their critics as detrimental to blacks as a group.

Other terms with the same meaning A more offensive term with the same meaning is house n##er (as contrasted with field workers from the days of slavery). In 2002, actor/singer Harry Belafonte used a variation of the term, White House n###r, to characterize certain political figures. Native Americans in the United States sometimes will use the term Uncle Tomahawk.

Similarly, Mexicans in the US may be referred to as “tio taco” or “tia taco” (from tio / tia, Spanish for uncle / aunt).

A similar term for black people is Oreo, implying that one is black on the outside but white on the inside.

Wow!! Fits Thomas to a “T”.

And for jbmlaw to even mention Fredrick Douglas or Thurgood Marshall in the same sentence with Clarence Thomas speaks volumes about his knowledge of contributions and achievement by blacks.

Sorry Jim, I had no idea my Uncle Tom reference would rouse such a furor. I can only guess that it’s because it has already been spoken for. About Clarence Thomas…

I like Thomas because his views on originalism, equal protection, race, and the constitution, federalism, and even natural law are pretty much the same as mine. I think he’s very much in the tradition of the framers, but I also recognize that some would find him out of the mainstream where they live and breathe.

It always comes back to the debate over “judicial ideology.” The age old and relatively new fear as to who is supposed to dictate the rules the Supreme Court applies.

The “originalists” believe that it’s not the job of courts to make new social policy, especially in areas of race, religion, and abortion, and the “living constitutionalists” have no problem with that. The originalists at least have tradition and the limits it imposes on their side, but the living constitutionalists, have unfettered discretion, and nothing to guide them but their own consciences or cultural preferences.

So is it better to err on the side of conservative caution or do you jump unknowingly into the progressive pit? As I “live and breathe”, I don’t want to go down there just cause some liberal justice thinks I should check it out.

It’s hard to climb out cause the slopes are so slippery.

Jbmlaw,

Associate Justice Thomas’s dissents are what I find most appalling. Off the top of my head, Boeing, Waffle House, his strange parsing in Booker, his waste of paper dissent in Lawrence, and his whole judicial attitude represented by all of the post 9/11 cases (Hamdi in particular).

His continual deference to state legislatures and a far-gone executive (in addition to buddy Antonin) demean his capable intellect. An acquaintance clerked for Thomas and called him a fascinating combination of arrogance and submissiveness.

One of Thomas’ most recent landmark Uncle Thommery Oreo CookieMonster Decisions:

Divided Court Rejects School Diversity Plan

Thomas took a harder stance against the choice plans: “Simply putting students together under the same roof does not necessarily mean that the students will learn together or even interact,” he said. “Furthermore, it is unclear whether increased interracial contact improves racial attitudes and relations.”

Yep — All he needed to do was sing a resounding rendition of “Mammy” to go along with that opinion. Sho Nuff.

BTW I was sooo happy that the resident insane psychopath posted even MORE supposed numbers on black crime; it gave me just the opening I was looking for to post my very own numbers, (these are in fact REAL statistics, not that crap that pscyhogirlboybastard makes up). Trash, you’re too dang easy and SOO predictable… hee hee hee.

Army Recruitment Numbers on Race Reveal Disproportionate Numbers of People of Color, Poor; Latino Recruitment Rate

When data from the NPP is compared with population statistics for the 15 to 24 year old population, with the exception of Latino youth, people of color are recruited into the active duty Army at a percentage greater than their percentage of the total population.

*In 2004, 16.4% of Active Duty Army recruits were African-American while they made up 14.3% of the population, 4.8% of recruits were Asian/Pacific Islander while making up 4.1% of the population, and Native Americans were 1.3% of recruits while making up 0.9% of the population.

The numbers are considerably more disproportionate when one factors in income, with 70% of African-American youth coming from neighborhoods at or below the United States’ median income and 64% of Latino recruits living in such neighborhoods, compared to 57% of white recruits. This reveals what is clearly a class disparity in the active duty Army with households with median incomes at or above $60,000 (125% of the median household income) being under-represented. Interestingly, in those neighborhoods with median incomes over $60,000 white youth make up some 76.1% of the population but yet they only make up 70.2% of recruits while African-Americans make up 11.1% of recruits compared with their 5.5% of the population. In total, neighborhoods with average or below average median incomes were over-represented.

I’m hoping one day that Trash can be gangraped in his back yard by a bunch of those “statistics” on crime he keeps sprouting. I figure with all the help they give to him and his deranged rantings, that’s the least they can do for everyone else. You’re sooo easy and predictable!!

These beliefs are held by a man - in my opinion - that has anger toward his father and grandfather because he was not allowed to be a Cub Scout or participate in sports in school. Yet, he went on the Cornell and Yale where he was in the vast minority but proclaims in his writings that he does not think people will interact if they are brought together. How insane is that statement? How can you not interact when you are in the presence of others? Maybe that is why he does not speak on the bench because he was not allowed to speak growing up and in college.

As for Uncle Thom’s orginality; here’s another opinion from a former colleague,Samuel Marcosson is Professor of Law at Louisville, when discussing if Uncle Thom should be promoted to Chief Justice, (When there was a vacancy earlier):

The core problem for Thomas, and for originalism, is that its consistent application would be unacceptable politically. If an originalist wavers when the going gets tough, that virtue becomes illusory. In short, Justice Thomas cannot claim the mantle of originalist legitimacy when he tells me the Constitution does not protect my right to marry in Kentucky, while advocating the non-originalist position that it does protect his right to marry in Virginia.

If Justice Thomas were a genuine originalist, the country could benefit from the fight his nomination would produce, and from a meaningful debate over whether we really want a genuinely originalist Court (Presser, Chief Justice, presiding?). By all means, let us discuss whether the Court should overrule Loving v. Virginia, leaving the states free to criminalize interracial marriages, and Pennsylvania Coal v. Mahon, leaving them free to regulate the value of property down to nothing without giving just compensation. Originalism would emerge much less well-regarded from a thorough airing of all its implications. Since Thomas is an originalist-of-convenience, rather than one of principle, his nomination would instead prove simply that there are no true originalists on the Court, including Clarence Thomas.

PS: And all his azzkissing and Yassah Bossman’s STILL didn’t get him the top job!!
