Thinking Right’s weekend free-for-all. Pick a topic:
• Headline correction: “Billable hours aren’t everything.” The headline writer neglected to observe that the story was about lawyers. (Of course, billable hours aren’t everything if one earns as much working 15 hours as when working 40, as asserted.)
• The Thinking Right translation service offers as a public service this translation of Jane Kidd, head of the state Democratic Party, referring to the three weak challengers lined up to take on U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss: “We’re still kind of eyeing that one.” Translation: “Surely there’s a rich trial lawyer or a wealthy businessman out there who can self-finance a statewide political campaign.” No charge. Public gratitude is sufficient.
• President Bush yields to Democrats and appoints a consensus nominee for attorney general. So how do the Dems react? Precisely as they would had he appointed former U.S. Solicitor Ted Olson. U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, says he’ll use the nomination to pressure the White House to turn over documents unrelated to the case for the nominee, Judge Michael B. Mukasey. This is political 2008 guerilla warfare, not governance.
• Headline: “Saudi women want to drive.” Some days I’m for that, and some days I’m not.
• Just after I popped for new ties comes this word from the British Department of Health, concerning hospital-borne infections and the role of doctors’ dress: “Ties are rarely laundered, but worn daily. They perform no beneficial function in patient care and have been shown to be colonized by pathogens.” Well, yes, but cartoonist Mike Luckovich, whose tastes ran to ’40s and ’50s styles, jettisoned those ties. And besides, they weren’t colonized by pathogens. Those were the patterns.
• George W. Bush has a chance to redeem himself. “My biggest frustration remained the president’s unwillingness to wield his veto against out-of-control spending,” former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan writes in his just-released “The age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World.” War-related spending is essential; higher domestic spending’s not. Make Greenspan happy. Veto the bloat.
• Voter ID Apology Window open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to accommodate the long lines of naysayers expected. Tuesday’s local elections around the state, all requiring photo ID, came off without a hitch. Ordinarily I’d say: Thank Secretary of State Karen Handel, who was everywhere spreading the message that they’d be required. But I never thought the problem the critics hallucinated existed anyway.
• Jack! Jack! What’s a good conservative congressman from Georgia, a young guy with a promising future in statewide office, doing defending earmarks? Being the pork champion of Georgia’s U.S. House delegation may play well in U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston’s coastal district, but the way to shrink government is not to demand anything of it. You ask; they own you.
• Jena, La. Whites hang nooses in a tree on a school campus in September, for which they’re punished with in-school suspensions. Three months later, a white student who had nothing to do with the first episode is beaten severely in the school cafeteria by black football teammates, who are criminally charged. Supporters think the first explains the second. It doesn’t. The beaters may well have been overcharged initially with second-degree attempted murder, but it’s often difficult to get a full and impartial read on stories involving race, as was the case at Duke University.
• Jesse Jackson declared Jena to be “a defining moment, just like Selma was a defining moment,” and accused Barack Obama of “acting like he’s white” for refusing to take up the cause of the “Jena Six,” according to The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., where Jackson spoke. Jackson doesn’t remember the acting white comment. Jena is not Selma or even Duke, where no crime occurred.

Good morning, Jim,
Just a few comments in reflection to some of your points in today’s Thinking Right:
The new Attorney General, Michael Mukasey is a good man and a jurist with a solid record.
In the waning days of, at best, a D+/C- administration, Georgie begins to show some promise.
Voter Picture I.D.s. I always vote early on Election Day. If those poor poll workers can stand to look at that picture so early in the morning…more power to them!
Something that you didn’t mention, Jim…Brian Nichols’ attorneys. Nichols is being defended on the dole; in other words, at the taxpayers’ expense. That is fine. He should have the opportunity for a defense. However, his attorneys should be paid at the rate established by the General Assembly and authorized by the court, and it should NOT be $4,000 a week! High priced attorneys should work for the taxpayer rate when they draw indigent defense duty. It is part of being a great American on their part and makes-up, in part, for their devouring of us paying clients!
Of course, no honest lawyer (pardon the oxymoron) is worth $4,000 a week!
Just another reason to totally privatize education and end this failing public school nonsense…oh, wait, most of you readers on this blog are public school products aren’t you?!?

There’s a more important thing to discuss: Thank God the NYC police (not those in charge) stepped in and made it clear they wouldn’t allow Mahmoud ‘Hitler II’ Ahmadinejad to pay respects to the terrorists who brought down the World Trade Center Towers.
Instead, the little madman planned on sharing his ideas with those who share their hatred of America at Columbia University - then got shot down again.
Maybe MoveOn.org will find a place for their international icon to share ideas with their Presidential candidate, Hillary Rodham.

There is much more to the Jena story than the little blurb you provided. You forgot to mention the group of white students who attacked a black student, hitting him in the head with a bottle. The result, probation. Or the white student who pulled a shotgun on three black students. The black students wrestled the gun from him and were charge with thief and battery. The kid who pulled out the gun was not charged at all. There are many aspects to this story from the school arson, the DA, the school board overturning the principal’s initial response to the noose incident, and others. Yet this is typical of the AJC, reporting just enough for the uninformed to get lead like lemmings to the sea.

Please do your research, if you are going to write about something.
The protestors aren’t equating beating someone with hanging nooses. Like most news organizations you can’t be bothered with reporting the whole story. Do you really think these boys beat someone up over something that happened three months before? How stupid.
Here let me give you the facts: 1. Several White boys including the “victim” of the beating beat of the Black kid who asked permission to sit under the tree. None of these boys were charged with assault, attempted murder, or anything else.
The “victim” pulled a gun on the same kid and some of his friends. The kids wresteled the gun away from the “victim” took the gun to the police, and where the Black kid was immediately arrested, charged with theft, and the gun was returned to the “victim”, who wasn’t charged with anything.
At school before the fight, the White “victim” and his friends were taunting the Black kid and they started to beat him up again, when some of the Black kids friends jumped in to help him. All of the kids from the fight were suspended (an act which has gotten the principal fired) and the White kids who started the fight were charged with simple battery, but not attempted murder or anything as serious as the Black kids.
Reports from teachers and students don’t have all of the Jena 6 kids at the “scene of the crime”, which indicates that the DA pulled out kids who he thought of as trouble makers in order to over charge them and ruin their lives.
After the noose incident the DA came to talk to the Black kids, but not the White kids. He told them that he could ruin their lives with the stroke of a pen. A few weeks ago he brushed the remark off by saying that he was just having a bad day.
Nobody says the Jena 6 were right or that they should not be punished. But they should be punished to the same degree as the White kids.
Please try to follow some journalistic training and research the facts before you spout your opinions.

Jim, I am so disappointed in you. Jena is way more complicated then those two events. Many incidents have occurred since the noose was hung on the tree. None of the protestor’s are saying the boys’ shouldn’t be punished. We want to know is the equity in distribution in punishment? How can you be charged with 2nd degree murder and the weapon listed is tennis shoes? How can a young black may take a gun away from the young white man who had pointed the gun at him and the young black man be charged with theft along with two other? There is something terribly wrong in Jena.
Main stream media, like the AJC, just started reporting about the events in Jena. I have been following this story since January 2007. Without the protest, people who don’t read alternative sources for news would have never heard of the events happening in Jena.
I am tired of the DA in Jena saying there isn’t a race problem in Jena. I am tired of a completely white jury convicting young black men and it’s called a jury of your peers. It’s poppycock. Sometimes to heal you have to admit that there is a problem and deal with it head on.
I can tell this is where my major frustration with white folks who want to bury issues. Why not deal with it? Discuss so that we all can have a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other.

Scott, thanks for adding the extra information that everyone, including CNN, seems to leave out. The story doesn’t jump from noose in tree to school fight. There were incidents that happened in between in which no one was charged with attempted murder. Yet, now we get murder charges. That’s what everyone is upset about. One set of charges for one group and a different set of charges for another. That’s why you see Free Jena 6. Not because no one believes they should be punished for their inappropriate decision to fight. They should be. People are saying Free Jena 6 because people involved in the other incidents are free and the current charges are inappropriate.
And if these charges stand, there should be attempted murder charges for school fights from this point on. I don’t care if it’s a white on white fight. Everyone should be brought up on attempted murder charges. The precedence has been set.

I liked Mid-South’s post on consequences in school.
I can share one incident where I was called in for a conference with one of my daughter’s teachers. I told my daughter that I would be there only to watch her plead her case.
It appeared as though my daughter had taken liberties with what she perceived as her freedom to assist another teacher who had requested her help. She did so without informing the teacher in whom’s class her presence was mandated.
My daughter would not make a good defense attorney. When she asked why I had not spoken up for her, I told her that it wasn’t me who committed the crime and therefore, it wasn’t me that should be held accountable.
“You’ll enjoy detention.” I said…”It’ll give you time to think about what’s in your best interest next time around”.

Even with 3 weak, and I do mean weak, Democratic challengers Chambliss is considering being the ONLY Republican senator willing to vote for restoration of habeas corpus for American citizens. That ought TO tell you reactionaries which way the electorate is going. You fooled us twice; God, we’re stupid! But while the American public could be easily swayed once, even twice, I don’t think you’re going to fool us three times in a row. You Republicans are going to wake up on November 5th next year to a second landslide loss. You will be able to say, like Norm Van Brocklin, once a coach of the hapless Falcons, “We have met the enemy, and it is us!”
The only possible good from the looming destruction of the current version of the Republican Party is the creation of a new party interested in keeping government out of our homes and our bedrooms, interested in passing laws to protect us rather than passing laws to protect the government, and interested in developing wealth for the nation rather than lining their own pockets. I truly hope so, because it certainly won’t be the Democratic Party. All we’re going to do is swap one set of scoundrels for another.
Where are this generation’s Churchills, Eisenhausers, Lincolns, aor even Trumans? All I have to vote for is a guy who has trouble just remembering a few lines as an actor, a young kid barely out of diapers, and the wife of a “if it feels good, do it” good ole boy, who changes her position with the change of the wind. A pox on both of your parties! Not a one of the headliners of either of your two worthless parties are worthy of being mayor of Atlanta - much less President of the United States!

You really don’t see any such things as “racial profiling” as a problem and you really can deny that the things that happened to people like Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, LaTasha Harlins,Aswan Watson, Antonio Rosario, Hilton Vega, and Kathryn Johnson was justified, (especially that brilliant piece you did on Johnson — remember how you said she, [who was 93, half blind, living on her own in a poor neighborhood infected with crime], should have known that the unannounced people breaking into her home were cops? — That spoke so highly of the type of racist, bigoted, biased psuedo-“journalism” that you love to send out. Your repuglican party must be so proud of you!!).
Yes I guess you can turn a blind eye to all of these things BUT see so clearly the unjustness of four little rich white boys being called rapists at Duke!! Jim Wooten - when it comes to what happend in Jena, I couldn’t wait to see you take a stab at your version of the truth. I could have written it for you yesterday, because you are so predictable.
I predict that your great grandchildren will learn that they must and should be punished for hanging nooses, regardless of free speech. I predict that they will learn that when you go back to your truck, you should get in and drive off to protect yourself - because if you pull a gun on someone, you will be charged with a crime and punished.
I predict that when your great grandchildre know there is trouble and anger between a group of people, they will not taunt the other group, but just keep walking and not say anything to make matter worse.
It’s great that you want to make your victim look innocent, but isn’t that exactly what you are accusing the protestors of doing.
Jim Wooten, sometimes people bring things on themselves and I suggest you teach your great grandchildren and all the others that one day you will not be able to have grand dad make things better for you.
FYI… stop leaving out what happened in between the Noose and the December fight.
Stop leaving out that GREAT speach the DA gave to the students. You should be appalled at what he said.
You should also think about the fact that he represents the school system and is also the DA. Note: Jim if that is not a true statement then call me out on it.
There were many injustices in this case, even down to the all white jury. There was a relative of one of the witnesses on the jury.
I know that this is the Opinion section of the paper, but your opinion stinks. Those 6 young men should have been suspended from school and that should have been the end of the entire thing.

How can you suggest that the white student had nothing to do with the first incident. He was involved in the first fight that major news media has ignored - the one where white students beat up the black student who sat under the tree. Absolutely nothing happened to those white students until one of them got beat up himself. The media reporting of these incidents are reflective of the problem. It’s not seen as a problem or it’s just ignored when white people do it, but it’s criminal for blacks.

In a nutshell, African Americans have chosen to live their lives collectively without real power.
African Americans pay a tremendous price when they allow other people to service their basic needs. It appears that for the most part, they are not smart enough to understand the correlation between allowing others to service their basic needs, and the injustice they receive in America.
No one group of people on earth is going to service the basic needs of another group of people without requiring the price of servitude, volunteer slavery.
By the way, there are a number of African Americans being monetarily rewarded for their complicity in the destruction of the masses of black people via integration.
These so-called educated African Americans among others use an assortment of mediums, television, radio, books, etc., to trick, hoodwink, and bamboozle the masses; some deceitfully account for their resources due to the “choices” they made.

Maybe you need to do your homework. The youth in question(victim) had absolutely nothing to do with the noose incident or any other beating. This was a random cowardly act. Six against one. When you knock someone unconscious and continue beating him(kicking him in the head), I believe that might constitute attempted murder. Race should play no issue in this event. If the community does not agree with verdicts or punishments of other cases protest those. It does not give anyone the right to obsolve this crime. Remember two wrongs never make a right.

A gang of black kids beating a single white kid is a hate crime. If blacks are going to attack in packs, they should expect to die in packs. I worked off Marietta street when the Morehouse and the other AUC black kids objected to the Rodney King verdict, and engaged in gang attacks on whites. A Federal Reserve employee was attacked when he tried to make it to the Marta station at the CNN building. He was beaten so badly by a gang of black punks that he had to retire on disability, with significant neurological deficits. Too bad he did not have a 9 mm to empty into the gang, all 18 rounds in the first clip. As it was, no one was ever arrested for this hate crime, no one was ever punished, the thugs still walk the streets of america.

RCH Check the facts because the victim was one of the main ones inciting the racial tensions.. He also had beaten up a kid before and was a major player in everything going on.. He was actually a ring leader telling others what to do. See you never had to deal with racism before so you dont know what it is. Thats why you can sit in your ivory tower and think the law doesnt convict innocent men, there is no such thing as police brutality, there is no such thing as a dirty cop, a DA that can get rid of your life with the stroke of a pen, a jury of people that are not your peers, a enormous amount of time for a misdemeanor and the list could go on. I could go on for days and this is just the legal system.. Its what we call a dirty game.. You saw it happen with the DUKE boys so why cant it happen to someone else.. You were outraged then when those pristine lily white boys had been blamed for raping a lowly little black girl.. Just imagine what would have happened if that were black guys on a white girl, you see how the story changes. Actually its happened a million times to black men before the DUKE boys case was brought to light.. You see why race is still a factor in America.. The reason there are so many black people in jail is not because they are guilty, its because they didnt have the means to hire an attorney to fight for them and got railroaded or swapped out by a public defender. Wake up Man.. Social injustice in this country is running rampant..

· On Thursday, August 31, 2006, a small group of black students asked if they could sit under a tree on the traditionally white side of the Jena High School square. · The students were informed by the Vice Principal that they could sit wherever they pleased. · The following day, September 1, 2006, three nooses were found hanging from the tree in question. Two of the nooses were black and one was gold: the Jena High School colors. · On Tuesday night, September 5, 2006, a group of black parents convened at the L&A Missionary Baptist Church in Jena to discuss their response to what they considered a hate crime and an act of intimidation. · When black students staged an impromptu protest under the tree on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, a school assembly was hastily convened. Flanked by police officers, District Attorney Reed Walters warned black students that additional unrest would be treated as a criminal matter. According to multiple witnesses, Walters warned the black student protestors that, “I can make your lives disappear with a stroke of my pen.” This was widely interpreted as a reference to the filing of charges carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison. · On Thursday, September 7th, police officers patrolled the halls of Jena High School and on Friday, September 8 th, the school was placed on full lockdown. Most students, black and white, either stayed home, or were picked up by parents shortly after the lockdown was imposed. The Jena Times suggested that black parents were to blame for the unrest at the school because their September 5th gathering had attracted media attention. · Principal Scott Windham recommended to an expulsion hearing committee that the three white boys responsible for hanging the nooses in the tree should be expelled from school. · On Thursday September 7, 2006, asserting that the noose were merely a silly prank inspired by a hanging scene in the television min-series ‘Lonesome Dove’, the committee opted for a few days of in-school suspension. The names of the three students were not released to the public for reasons of confidentiality. · According to press accounts, on September 10, 2006, several dozen black parents attempted to address a meeting of the school board but were refused an opportunity to speak. · At a second September meeting of the school board, September 18, 2006, a representative of the black families was allowed to give a five-minute statement, but school board refused to discuss the “noose issue” because the matter had been fully addressed and resolved. · Although few major disciplinary issues emerged during the fall semester at Jena High School, there is strong evidence that several black male students remained agitated throughout the semester and that disciplinary referrals on these students spiked sharply.

Wooten thinks the hanging of a noose or nooses three months prior to the beating was just a kid prank, unrelated to the beating. He naively thinks the nooses just happened because there is no prior racism, that everything was nice, dandy and forgotten after the suspension and all races lived happiuly ever after. Timeline continued….
· On Thursday, November 30, 2006, the academic wing of the Jena High School was largely destroyed by a massive fire. Officials strongly suspect arson.
· Throughout the following weekend, Jena was engulfed by a wave of racially tinged violence.
· In one incident, a black student was assaulted by a white adult as he entered a predominantly white partly held at the Fair Barn (a large metal building reserved for social events). After being struck in the face without warning, the young black student was assaulted by white students wielding beer bottles and was punched and kicked before adults broke up the fight. It has been reported that the white assailant who threw the first punch was subsequently charged with simple battery (a misdemeanor), but there is no documentary evidence that anyone was charged.
· In a second major incident, a white high school graduate who had been involved in the assault the night before pulled a pump-action shotgun on three black high school students as they exited the Gotta-Go, a local convenience store. After a brief struggle for possession of the firearm, the black students exited the scene with the weapon.
· The Jena Times has reported that, in light of these racially-tinged incidents, several high school teachers begged school administrators to postpone the resumption of classes until the wave of hysteria had dissipated. This request was ignored and classes resumed the morning of Monday, December 4, 2006.
· Shortly after the lunch hour of Monday, December 4, 2006, a fight between a white student and a black student reportedly ended with the white student being knocked to the floor. Several black students reportedly attacked the white student as he lay unconscious. Because the incident took place in a crowded area and was over in a matter of seconds eye witness accounts vary widely. Written statements from students closest to the scene (in space and time) suggest that the incident was sparked by an angry exchange in the gymnasium moments before in which the black student assaulted at the Fair Barn was taunted for having his “a* whipped”.
· The victim of the attack is close friends of the boys who have admitted to hanging the nooses in September of 2006.
· Within an hour of the fight, six black students were arrested and charged with aggravated battery. According to The Jena Times, at least a dozen teachers subsequently threatened a “sick-out” if discipline was not restored to the school. According to the Alexandria Town Talk, District Attorney Reed Walters responded to the teacher’s threat by upping the charges on the six boys to attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder—charges carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison.
· On the basis of the charges filed by the District Attorney’s office, all six black students have been expelled for the remainder of the school year and, according to The Jena Times , several teachers quickly demanded that the accused boys be barred from the school for life.
· On December 13, 2006, District Attorney, Reed Walters published a statement in The Jena Times in which the young men arrested in the school fight incident were characterized as criminals who had been terrorizing both the school and the community. The sloppy wording of the statement and an introduction associating the tirade with the “recent two incidents at Jena High School” created the impression that those accused of involvement in the fight were also suspected of settling the school fire.

Well, them Saudi women won’t quit till the whole country is log-jammed by a bunch of women drivers holding up traffic while they try to put on their makeup and take up three lanes of the road at the same time. The towel heads should come over here and look at our rush hour some time before they change the law. You got men trying to get to work at 90 mph while women are holding up traffic and putting on eye shadow and weaving all over the place and going 55 mph. No wonder we can’t get there from here.
Anyway, I just shook my head when I read about the bunch of Those People in Jena. The people in that town didn’t learn a thing from seeing what happened in Atlanta oncet we let Those People do what they want. Jena got a DA that wants Law and Order and a whole bunch of outsiders that wants to go around and stir up trouble.
Far as I can see it was a White Peoples tree. And wouldn’t you know it, a bunch of Those People had to go stirring up trouble by setting under it. What the town needed was Lester Maddox with a ax handle to clear the trouble makers out. Leastwise me and Wooten is on the same side on this one. And Sister Dusty and Van and RCH and of course TFTT. Oncet TFTT gets on here and gives the trouble makers a good tongue lashing they’ll be sorry they ever crossed the line.
I’m awful glad us good white Christians still got Billy Bob’s to go to for some privacy. Many years ago I worryed this Hosea Williams was going to lead a march and go right in there while he was in Forsyth County, but he had bigger fish to fry I guess.
Anyway, one thing we learnt from this Jena thing. You can try to change a god fearing redneck with laws and such, but it won’t work. We will still hold on to the old Christian ways of making sure we don’t mix with Those People. If they won’t let us string them up and kind of wink and nod about it, we will just find other ways of letting Those People know they should stay in their place. Like putting one of Those People on trial for trying to murder a good white boy over a school fight or making sure Those People that don’t got no ID have to show ID to vote. We still got the power.

Or do you just come up o ut of your head with this nonsense that you write in your articles. I agree with the comment that it is time for your job to be outsourced. You have outlived your time. Also, there obviously was some crime committed at Duke Univ. Those young me were not totally innocent. They may not have done what they were charged with, but you can rest assured there was something illegal going on.

· The Louisiana Rules of Professional Conduct 3.6(a) state that: “A lawyer who is participating or has participated in the investigation or litigation of a matter shall not make an extrajudicial statement that the lawyer knows or reasonably should know will be disseminated by means of public communication and will have a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing an adjudicative proceeding in the matter.”
· At a January 29 school board meeting called to consider the possibility of reversing the decision to expel the students, District Attorney Reed Walters, appeared as the school district’s legal counsel. Although it is standard practice in Louisiana for district attorneys to represent the local school board, there is strong evidence that the disciplinary investigation undertaken by the school and the criminal investigation of the December 4 fight are virtually indistinguishable. This heightens the impression that the charges filed by DA Reed Walters reflect the understandable hysteria engulfing both the student body and the school faculty in the wake of the school fire and a weekend of racial violence.
Preliminary Observations :
The competence and independence of investigators is seriously in doubt .
· There can be little doubt that a white student was assaulted by several black students at Jena High School on December 4, 2006. However, conflicting eye witness statements make it extremely difficult to determine the number of participants or the identity of the alleged assailants with any degree of certainty.
· It is virtually certain that at least one of the alleged assailants was not near the scene of the fight. Most of the students accused of participating in the assault deny involvement.
· The defendants are invariably described as “good kids” by black residents. One of the defendants is a highly respected athlete with a clean disciplinary record who has been repeatedly praised by his coaches as an exemplary student on and off the football field.
· The assault on a black student at the Fair Barn on Friday night and the fight at Jena High School on Monday morning are mirror images. In the first instance, a white twenty-two year-old initiated the fight with a punch to the face of a black seventeen year-old; at the school, a yet unidentified black student initiated the fight with a punch to the face. In both instances, the assailant’s friends joined the fray instantly. The striking difference is that the white youth responsible for the Friday incident have not been charged while those allegedly responsible for the school fight are facing charges that could send them to prison for 100 years without parole.
· Although a “bill of information” (based largely on mutually contradictory eye witness accounts) has been filed in connection with these cases, none of the accused has been formally indicted. In the state of Louisiana, only defendants facing the death penalty or life in prison must be indicted.
· In the state of Louisiana, if the victim of an alleged assault is a juvenile, the assailant can be found guilty of attempted second-degree murder even if there was no clear intent to do serious bodily harm. In other words, a seventeen year-old who strikes another seventeen year-old can end up doing fifty years without parole. Any “enhancement” (such as a prior conviction) doubles the penalty.
· An attorney hired to represent two of the defendants was informed by District Judge J. P. Mauffray that he could represent neither because, having interviewed both clients, he had a conflict of interest if one of them should decide to testify for the state. This ruling has been appealed.
The behavior of school officials and school board members reflects a breathtaking insensitivity to the mixture of anger, intimidation and horror inspired by the hate crime of late August.
· The response of school administrators to a flagrant hate crime was radically insufficient. According to The Jena Times, the noose incident was officially characterized as a harmless prank in which white students were merely imitating the actions of cowboy vigilantes in the television mini-series, ‘Lonesome Dove’ with no intent to intimidate the black students who had expressed a desire to sit under the tree. This construal of the noose incident is so unconvincing that the objectivity of anyone who accepts it must be questioned by any reasonable observer.

The Jena six mess does have racism (no doubt), but a lot of opinion is involved. A lot of the accounts, such as the white guy…not a student,scott, according to this…pulling a shotgun and then the black “victims” being arrested are reported as news based on what someone thought. There have been several “news” stories that relate incidents as told from the mouth of Marcus Jones, father of one of the kids. This is the guy who opines :”Here in LaSalle Parish, whenever a black man is offered a plea bargain, he is innocent. That’s a dead giveaway here in the South.”
Racism? Sure. From both blacks and whites. Marcus Jones is just as racist as the students who hung those nooses.
This is not a news story, any more than Jim’s column is news. It’s news with a spin. Try a little more critical thinking before screaming “racism” at every occurrence. Nooses in trees—-racist. Black man being offered a plea bargain—racist? Really? Do you feel as much sympathy for those who make such claims?

While I applaud you for discussing the Jena 6, I’d ask you and most of the other thinking right types to recheck your facts, to wit:
Two black kids asked their assistant principal if it was ok to sit under the “white” tree, named because only white kids were allowed to sit under it. This is somewhat ironic, as the tree was planted decades earlier by both white and black students as a sign of unity.
The next day, there were nooses on the tree. We all know what the symbolism is of a noose on a tree in the south. The police refused to write a report, resulting in no investigation in what would have been classified as a hate crime.
A group of white kids, including one of the kids who hung the nooses, jumped and beat a black kid. The black kids retaliated. This went back and forth for several days. The black kids were charged with attempted murder (deadly use of tennis shoes). The white kids were initially suspended, but their parents had the suspensions dropped, as so not to harm their chances of getting admitted to college.
Because of the escalating violence happening on both sides, the DA came to a school assembly. He blamed the conduct on the black kids, and threatened to end their lives, and I quote, “with the stroke of a pen.”
Fighting and tensions continue. One adult pulled a shotgun on a group of black teens. They disarmed him, and he ran. The teens were charged with theft, the guy with the gun was not charged.
The “innocent” white kid returned to school with a gun. He was expelled (later reversed), but there were no charges filed.
So, we have a kid who, in the post-Columbine zero-tolerance era, brings a gun to school, beats black kids, and hangs a noose on campus, and gets off with a slap on the wrist and no harm to his record.
On the other hand, we have six black kids who beat up the above guy, and are subsequently charged with attempted murder, looking at 15-30 years in prison.
And Jim (and his cohorts) seem ok with this.
Maybe Jim can explain why, for what amounts to a schoolyard fight between two equally wrong parties, one group gets off scot free while the others have heir lives destroyed?
I don’t think anyone’s innocent on this one, but all should be treated the same way. You can’t dismiss what the whites did as a “kids will be kids” thing, while condemning the blacks as dangerous criminals.
Check your dates, Jim. It’s 2007, not 1957.

The DA has called him innoscent, but this DA doesn’t have a good track record. DebbieDoRight According to every news report, there was no link between the six youths that beat the lone single individual. It has been reported that these six were gang members with a history of criminal activity.
Also it was reported that a black youth not from this area(Katrina relocated) made the first mention that the tree area was for “whites only.” Before this everybody sat under the tree.

Funniest news item I have read from Jena included a quote from a black mother who stated how Jena was a very peaceful town. The next paragraph listed the racial makeup of Jena, including the fact the town is 85% white. DUH.

The sad truth about reading Jim Wooten’s comments and/or opinion is that too many people will believe what he’s stated about the Jena 6 situation as being factual. When in fact, prior to the young White male being attacked by the Black youth, a young Black male was attacked by a group of White males. No where does he mention this incident nor mention the gun being drawn on the Black youth, etc. In all the incidents involving the White males, no criminal consequences resulted. However, the Black males were charged with attempted murder using sneakers as their weapon of choice.
In the future, PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT PRIOR TO GOING TO PRINT. ISN’T THAT SUPPOSE TO BE THE TRAITS OF A GOOD JOURNALIST?

Why did it happen:
· In several statements published in The Jena Times, investigators have insisted that the alleged fight at the High School has no connection to either the November fire or the September noose incident. This statement violates the canons of simple common sense. Indeed, as the teacher’s post-fire plea to administrators suggests, the incendiary atmosphere created by the tragic fire and a weekend of white-initiated racial violence made a violent episode at the High School virtually certain. The objectivity and independence of LaSalle Parish investigators would be regarded as suspect by any reasonable person.
· Unambiguous hate crimes call for harsh discipline and an extensive program of sensitivity training for administrators, teachers and the student body. Yet school administrators failed to discuss this or any other serious option.
· Even in the face of heartfelt pleas from black parents, school administrators and the LaSalle Parish School Board refused to discuss the implications of the noose issue.
· This derogation of responsibility would be deeply troubling to any reasonable observer with even a cursory appreciation for the racial history of the region.
· Similarly, school administrators who placed the school on lockdown following the noose incident in September failed to anticipate trouble on December 4, 2006.
The ethical lapses and flawed professional judgment of LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters call for strong remedial action:
· On September 6, 2006, Mr. Walters made intimidating remarks interpreted by many black students as a suggestion that any illegal acts committed in response to the noose incident would result in a life sentence.
· Mr. Walters’ published comments in the December 13, 2006 edition of The Jena Times represent an unambiguous attempt to poison the minds of potential jurors and grand jurors.
· Mr. Walters’ decision to increase the charges of defendants involved in the alleged fight at the school to attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to attempt second-degree murder have transformed a routine school fight into a premeditated gangland hit perpetrated by street thugs intent on murder. This bizarre escalation of charges is impossible to justify on even the most extreme and pro-prosecution interpretation of the meager facts at hand.
· There is strong evidence that Mr. Walters, in his role as counsel for the LaSalle School Board, has been so influenced by the atmosphere of paranoid trauma sweeping the school in the aftermath of (a) the noose incident, (b) the school fire and (c) a weekend of racial violence, that he has lost any remnant of professional objectivity.

The only possible good from the looming destruction of the current version of the Republican Party is the creation of a new party interested in keeping government out of our homes and our bedrooms, interested in passing laws to protect us rather than passing laws to protect the government, and interested in developing wealth for the nation rather than lining their own pockets. I truly hope so, because it certainly won’t be the Democratic Party. All we’re going to do is swap one set of scoundrels for another.
ESPECIALLY that first sentence! I have repeatedly said that IMHO the current Democratic leadership holds some albeit little promise for restoring sanity to our government. Their role, as the English put it, as “the loyal opposition” is affirmed. But the party’s ability to move towards the reasonable and reasoned center is not only feasible but likely.
But it is a vibrant and sane GOP that can and must be created from the ashes of this utterly failed and repudiated neo-conservatism, especially as exemplified by this administration, that will ultimately provide us with another Eisenhower or Lincoln.
But the Republican leadership’s willingness and ability to move away from their inept and dogmatic extremism is still VERY much in doubt. Look at their slate for 2008, especially their darling front runners, as evidence of yet more intransigence and uncompromising arrogance.
As they continue to pander to their “base”, they still don’t get it, even though the writing is definitely on the wall. But I think they are going to be forced by the will of mainstream American voters to. Sooner or later. And hopefully sooner.

I was raised in a small GA town. Population was around 50/50 black and white. We are all still friends today and are well into our 50’s. We fought each other and we fought for each other as we grew up and even as adults. As usual someone from the outside would come in and start trouble, this was on both sides. Someone had to sit them down and explain to them how things worked. This was done on both sides. It was a respect thing, we respected each other, not feared but respected. Maybe this approach would have helped. Just an idea.

It is endlessly amusing to me to watch TV interviews of white Jena residents who claim that everybody in the town gets along well and that there’s no racial problem. They’ve profited from the gross injustice perpetrated against black residents for years, but somehow there’s “no problem” when national attention gets focused on the town.
No doubt that prosecuting attorney seeks to ingratiate himself with white voters. He will show up at his white church and be the subject of the adulation of white worshippers who don’t see any major problem with a white adult levelling a gun at a black but cry attempted murder when a white kid gets the crap beaten out of him. My, my, my. Although I shouldn’t have been, I was astonished at the vehemence both pro and con in this column. Does it appear like there are problems down in Jena? Yup? Are they racially based? Sure looks like it. Given all the claims and counterclaims, recitals of “fact” and rebuttals thereto, does anyone who’s posted here know ALL of the facts. Nooses, guns, theft, beatings, the list goes on and on. It won’t be until some journalist with a shread of professional digs up and reports ALL of the actual facts that any of us can weigh in with an opinion based on anything other than what we’ve heard or believe. Me, I’ll start with one simple truth. This whole thing seems to have started because a black kid wanted to sit (whether he asked permission or didn’t he is pointless because why should he have to ask another student if he can sit somewhere on public school property) under a tree on the school grounds where whitekids usually sit. And what happened next? Nooses? Gins pulled? Racial taunts? Beatings? Folks, regardles of which side of the fence you’re on (i.e., black or white) if you don’t see that there is something seriously amiss down there then I feel sorry for you.

I did read the wiki ‘article’ before I posted, but I know that anyone can write whatever they want (with the exception of slander) so I would never use that as a ‘journalistic’ source. It does have bibliographical numbers as in where they received their information, but when I click on the number, nothing happens. Maybe I am doing something wrong.
So far, just three non-reliable sources. This is so crazy. Almost a year of disputes and not one credible report of everything that happened.

The issue isn’t so much the difference in punishment between the hanging of the nooses (although they should have been arrested) and the Jena 6, it is the difference in punishment or charges between white people that beat black people (misdemeanors only) in Jena and the Jena six (felonies and attempted murder).
And, get real, attempted murder charges for a fight where the victim has bruises and cuts, and is not admitted to the hospital? That DA is as bad as or worse than the Duke DA.
Finally, some of the locals have shown what most of us believe to be true by driving around with nooses on their pick up truck.
Time for the state AG to take over these cases, and mete out charges and punishment fairly. Note: I think the Jena six should be charged for the beating, but their charges should be similar to the charges for the other fights that have occured. (No felonies.)
I can’t believe this stuff is still going on in 2007.

Debbie, I usually respect your opinion. But it seems to be based on a biased report of the facts.
Saying that the white kid was “well enough to attend a social function that night” after the big fight is one of those phrases that has been repeated over and over in many places, meaning it came from one source and has created a certain picture in people’s minds. Do y’all understand how that’s as much of a biased account as the one given by Jim?
Check out the snopes.com account. After reading that, I can understand why the six black kids had serious charges filed. Notice that whoever came up with the “well enough to go to a social function” phrase skimmed over the actual assault (what happened)in favor of a phrase biased to make a reader think the assault was no big deal.
That’s not a coincidence. The snopes article points out serious omissions in the online petition. That online petition has many phrases that are repeated verbatim in the current posts—-which means it’s likely the account that many consider to be the “true” story.
After numerous calls for Jim to “check out the facts” y’all might want to do the same. The last thing we need in this country is more fuel added to the racial fire. In this case, both sides are equally guilty.

Barker… you need to do a little research yourself. The “victim”, as you put it, was not involved in any fight prior to being beat up. He was not the one with the gun at the store. Witnesses supported the boy who did have the gun claiming self-defense. The DA talked to ALL of the students in the assembly, not just a certain group. The DA didn’t “pull” out certain kids. The result of the beating involved and ambulance and that requires a police investigation. The Jena 6 may have been over-charged initially, but certain should be charged - especially Bell, who had a prior record of four other violent crimes. Other than being persecuted, some of these kids received preferrencial treatment having gotten away with crime after crime until now. Bell, especially, deserves time in jail.

Certainly I don’t know all of the circumstances, but from what you told us, I would assume that the teacher that asked her to help in the classroom thinks a lot of her. There was never a question about her accountability, but a nice character reference from her parent during the conference wouldn’t have hurt anyone. Perhaps she would have taken away something from the incident other than what most of us learn when we are toddlers.

Anyone who thinks Jessie’s power is waning better think again. He is, as always, able to encite people into a frenzy as easily as a puppteer. What’s amazing is how his selective indignation still has the respect of the Leftists.
When have Jessie, Al, SCLC, NAACP and others EVER, EVER raised an eyebrow at black on black crime? No matter the severity of the crime, black victims never get the support of Jessie and the gang if the perpetuator is also black. Daily killings, drive-by shootings, random stray shots in a gun battle are reported all over the country. If it is black on black it simply dismissed as an “unfortunate incident” and surely not indicative of anything other than “Bush Policies” discriminating against blacks.
However, if it is (rarely) white on black crime, then it is Racism, Hate Crime, etc etc. Jessie and Al, always eager for a platform are quick to jump in front of the cameras and their minions are easily led along for the ride. Calls for Federal intervention, new policies, more money, and the same sing-song chorus.
Also, if it is black on white crime, then it is the racism of the cops, prosecutor and the victim himself that brought this crime on. And we break out the same bullhorns and collection plates.
Examples?? Well, Jena 6, OJ Simpson where it was the racist cops who set OJ up, Duke LaCrosse (no actual crime necessary for indignation), on and on. The race whiners are always at the ready.
Meanwhile, thousands of black vitims of drive-by’s, the young black victim of the Six Flags beating, the little black girl shot to death by “gangsta’s” stray bullets from the parking lot while at her computer in her bedroom are forgotten by Jessie and the boys.
TFTT writes about this often but I never see any cogent response from DebbieKnowNothing or the rest of the outraged Dems.

Thank GOD for the Internet and black talk radio. Students and myself have learned to not trust the mainstream media (for it is owned by whites). Statistics show that 80-90% of whites believe what they read, while only 50% of blacks believe what they read. We know that whites have always distorted the facts to portray themselves in a better light. How would you feel if you had a son (16 YEAR OLD) who was involved in a fistfight and he was charged with attempted murder (charged as an adult)? I believe your comments would be different. Your lack of empathy or sympathy is to be expected. That is why: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES - MY PEOPLE…. The Jena 6 committed a crime. Hanging a noose on an oak tree is not a crime. (but funny). They were in a white town, not a “chocolate city”, where violence is a common occurance. Lesson to be learned here: Blacks need to respect decent people’s areas. Stay on your side of town, or you may find your black azz in jail. Simple as that. Jena six will never be freed, because they used their natural instinct, and attacked a white boy in a packlike manner. Violence is in the breed, people. Just read the local papers to see. Good afternoon all. Looks like the Jena thugs draw most of the commentary today, undeservingly. The general rule is that where there is bad blood, the first to spill it is the first to go to jail; here there seem to be six culpable. Prosecutors usually throw everything against the wall, to see what sticks; the defense attorney’s job is to pull the prosecutor back to reality. In the Jena cases there is no suggestion of dishonesty or concealment by the prosecutor, so I think most of the criticism directed at the prosecutors is off base, even though the thugs were seemingly over-charged. If every case of over-charged thuggery became a cause celebre, The Rev. Jesse would spend all of his time… nevermind, I guess he does.

true equality will happen when a black person, such as the Jena 6, who violently attack another person because of their race, such as the Jena 6 did, can be, and is charged with a hate crime. equality means equal, it doesn’t automatically stop when it gets close to infringing on one’s perks. there was an atmosphere of separation, brought on by blacks and whites in Jena. the administators at the school are guilty by omission, they knew how the tree was being used and ignored it. the black kid that went to the tree to sit down wasn’t a hero, he was being unnecessarily confrontational. the black community should have had peaceful protests to change the way the tree was being used, not be confrontational and leading to what they knew it would lead to, so that they could march and say oh pitiful me again. they should have brought their leaders inright away and addressed the issue in a civil manner, in a manner that Mrtin would have been proud of, but not like this. the white kids, who are still technically kids, should have been punished, the punishment should have teeth, but not be too harsh, if they act that way again, then come down on them hard. but this time, it should have been a strict punishment, but not jail. they should be forced to learn about the horrible things that happened because of slavery and Jim Crow, but not jail, not the first time. that poor tree shouldn’t have lost it’s life because of this crap. and 6 on 1 is not heroic, it’s cowardly and shameful, and does not have a thing to do with equality and civil rights. and now, after everything Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did for black people in this country, it is just horrible to see black people supporting violence, and trying justify violence. the Jena 6 are scumbags, go ahead free the Jena 6, and then in a few years the black community can have egg all over their face again, when they are arrested in Vegas robbing somebody. OJ, Rodney King, Mike Vick, Jena 6, these are battles for equality and civil rights, they are battles for the validation of the use of the race card, and that is the only reason. the harm black people bring on themselves in this type of behavior, is a self-inflicted wound that is deeper than any other race or entity of any kind could ever inflict upon them.

Wow, are you actually hired and paid as a reporter or are you an intern who has an opinion page because you are a family member of someone with the AJC. If the AJC actually has you on the payroll, shame - shame - for the sake of all journalistic integrity, morality and style. I don’t know which is worst, the above mentioned, rather an editor failed to edit your opinion about Jena 6 before it went to print or the audasity of the AJC to use you as a tool for their hidden journalistic unfairness and ignorance in reporting the news. Although, this is your opinion, you are a “so-called” journalist - I think - or you may be an intern - even if you are an intern, you are not writing from the “man on the street” perspective. You are actually writing for a “so-called” professional publication. I will not waste any print trying to teach you what happened in Jena. The Jena Six situation is a case of prosecutorial misconduct, in my opinion. How do you put a 16-year-old in adult court. How do you say the display of 3 hanging nooses at the “white tree” was just a prank? How do you extrapolate tha Nike shoes worn by one of the defendants is a deadly weapon? How do you charge someone who is being accosted with a shotgun with theft of that weapon when they were protecting themselves from the shooter and disarmed him? How is the community served when several of those being charged were not participating in the fight, but were observers - along with several of the white kids, on a balcony and some distance from the fight - with accessory to attempted murder? How does the court allow relatives of the white kids to be jury members? How was these young men judged by their peers when there were NO blacks on the jury? Questions, questions, questions… no plausible answers for this miscarriage of justice and frankly a waste of the taxpayers money. This prosecutor is a reverse of the Duke rape case prosecutor.

Whites hang nooses in a tree on a school campus in September, for which they’re punished with in-school suspensions. Three months later, a white student who had nothing to do with the first episode is beaten severely in the school cafeteria by black football teammates, who are criminally charged.
Jim, this is not even close to the progression of events. Several other incidents took place before the final fight, including a group of black students being attacked by whites for attempting to attend a party attended mostly by whites, and a white student pulling a shotgun on some of the same black students. The boy who was attacked had been mouthing off about these more recent incidents.
I’m not saying any of this justifies the cafeteria attack. However — and this is the true point of the protests — there were multiple events between the noose hanging and the final attack for which white students should have been charged and were not (one person was charged with battery for the party fight). Most ridiculous of all were the second-degree attempted murder charges filed for what amounted to a schoolyard fight. (The victim had overall minor injuries.)
If you’re going to make pronouncements about headline events, at least get all the facts before you do so. Yes, even if they don’t support your personal biases.

Noelle Maybe times have passed me by, but in my day a fight was when kids made a big circle, two people fought it out,each probably getting in a few licks. Usually in a couple of days you saw the two same combatants having lunch together. When has six against one,and the one is already knocked out while repeatedly being kicked in the head become a simple school fight.

Well Jim, just like the rest of the media, you love to report half of the story on Jena 6, I guess it helps you stay hidden in your closet and not face the truth. I thought that journalist are supposed to be great readers, obviously that was lost on you. Jena 6 isn’t about the nooses and the fight wasn’t a result of the nooses. A few days before the fight involving the 6, a black student was also beaten by a group of white students, yet nothing happened to the white kids…that is the real issue…put your broom away and quit sweeping the real issue of injustice under the rug. This has nothing to do with Jesse or Al. Right is right and fair should be fair regardless of race.

Between 1976-2005, blacks made up 13% of the US population, but committed 59% of felony murders. Overall, blacks are 9 times more likely to commit murder than whites. Source: US DOJ
The Jena six is just history repeating itself…
One of the main perpetrators in this cowardly attack has been in trouble with the law numerous times before, but yet, the schools can’t (or wont) kick him out. This attack was predictable as the sun rising in the East.
BTW, this was not a fist fight. This was six criminal attacking one person and then using their feet to inflict more damage. You have someone on the ground unconscious and continue to kick him, that is attempted murder.

Reading the various comments posted on this board, I have been both disgusted and heartened. What some seem to miss is that Black people are not calling for the kids to NOT be punised for the school fight, but for all to get equal punishment. The fight at the party where the White kids beat the Black kid with a bottle, he only recieved a misdeamenor. The White guy pulls a gun on the Black kids and once the gun is wrestled away from him, the Black kids are charged with Theft and other crimes, the kids that hung the noose only got 3 days of in school suspension. Black kids fight the White kids and they are not felons. Does not seem right. Secondly for those whom think that hanging a noose is a high school prank. Hanging a noose to Black people is like waving the Swatika in front of Jewish families. I guarantee you that no of them will think its funny or a prank. Also if you beat someone with a bottle you most definitely should at least recieve the same charges as someone whom used a “shoe”. I join the few sane voices on this Blog. Mete out punishment but make it fair and equitable and personally I don’t think that a DA whom stated to kids that “with the swipe of his pen he could ruin their lives” is the person to do it. An outside prosecutor should be brought in to look objectively at the case. Think Nifong.

The ‘Jena Six’ attacked and severely beat one fellow student. The six were black and the one was white. The purpose of the march was to ‘Free the Jena Six’. Why should these criminals not be prosecuted for assaulting and severely beating the young man? Because someone, not this young man, suspended three nooses from a tree? Ostensibly,what the marchers, protesters, rabble are asking for is equal treatment under the law. What they are, in fact, after is to be immune to the consequences of their brutal, illegal, reprehensible deeds. The hanging of the nooses in the tree has been referred to as a hate crime. It was not! Stupid, insensitive, neanderthalesque, yeah, it was certainly that. The real hate crime occurred when six black thugs attacked, beat, kicked and rendered unconscious a young, white student who had had nothing to do with that incident!

Mychal Bell bond was denied Seems like half truth’s have been going around from the beginning to and in the end, Mychal Bell was already on probation when he got into the fight yes he was already on probation, Now either he didn’t understand the conditions of his probation or he just didn’t care. That’s why I try not to jump head first being swayed by the majority when it comes to issues like this. I feel for the victim with all my heart. He should not have been beaten the way he was. Mychal Bell should be punished for his part in the crime as well as the other boys too. In the end that rope is just what it is a rope. It has no significance whatsoever in my life neither should it with anyone else.

I could think of nothing better for my people, African-Americans, than to free them from the Jena 6, and all other things that are this self-destructive. there are so many more causes that are so much more important, that are truly deserving our efforts. we must sweep around our own back door first, before we can ever expect to receive a level of respect from others that we aren’t even willing to give ourselves. we used to look to overcome, now we look only to blame. no one ever wins that way, not us, not those we call our enemies, nobody wins. until we can openly admit that a bigot can be chameleon, yes, even black, then we aren’t ready for what we demand. as long as we make others important to our lives, we won’t be as important to ourselves as we should and deserve to be. the olive branch is long over due, otherwise we only have what the Israelis and Palestinians have, a bunch of BS, a bunch of hate, and a no win situation. who will be the first to second the call for unity and non-violence?

**$4,000.00 a week only represents an hourly rate of $100 per hour, assuming a 40 hour work week.
Most lawyers work 55-60 hours a week, making the hourly rate more likely closer to $65.00 per hour.
To pay defense lawyers at an hourly rate less than that of car mechanics and a/c repairmen will not result in representation anyone would find acceptable.**

This is good stuff, really. Kristalnaught was the semi-culmination of almost 17 years of a slow build-up of the sort of ‘right thinking’ (not necessary pointing fingers at you Mr. Wooten) ethnic hatred that resulted in millions of Jews - from throughout Europe - and Poles being placed in gas ovens in the 8 years that followed (you remember, the so-called ‘Final Solution’). Kristalnaught and the horrific events that followed could well have been nipped in the bud if ‘well-meaning’ Germans had been resolute in sacking ethnic hatred in the bud with outbursts of their own in the 1920s and early ’30s. But no, instead of standing up for righteousness & justice and against ‘master race’ nonsense, most pandered. And, as this sort of nonsense - when fostered by charismatic figures - is wont to do, it gathered a momentum that despicably and barbarically swept millions of human beings off the face of the earth and resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of other lives in the effort to stop the madness.
So I say to those of you who step forward to express contempt and outrage at the sort of injustice that appears to have at its roots some of those same tenets of the ‘master race’ nonsense we saw in Germany 80 years ago, please keep bringing it. It’s imperative that you do what the ‘right thinking’ Germans neglected to do when doing so would have been most valuable. Keep your eye on the prize at all cost. 9/11 happened during Bush’s watch, he is responsible for what happens during his watch. I’ll use to ways to explain it to the boneheads: 1- if you are on guard duty, even just for 30 minutes, and something bad happens, even if the previous guard left the gate unlocked, you are supposed to check that lock and assume responsiblity for your post, blaming it on the guy before you, won’t fly with your commanding officer. 2- a manager of a dept. is let go, many people weren’t happy with his work, so a new manager is hired to improve things and even correct the mistakes of the previous manager, when something bad happens 8-9 months down the road, do you really think your boss is going to accept the excuse, ‘it was the previous manager’s fault’, no, because you were hired to replace the guy that wasn’t getting the job done, we hired you to correct the problems, like you said you would when we hired you, we hired you for a change. but still people can say Bush had no responsibility for 9/11, the same ignorant people that let politicians who have done something horrible stand in front of them and say ‘I accept full responsibility’ , without accepting anything and being allowed to continue with their dishonorable behavior.

The criminal proclivities of blacks is well documented and widely known. Just look at Atlanta. The previous Mayor of Atlanta, Bill Campbell is in jail for enriching himself illegally while in office. The current Mayor of Atlanta, a black woman, has a daughter who was involved in the narcotics trade. The crime rate in Atlanta is exceedingly hig and most of those crimes are committed by blacks. There’s no denying that blacks and crime are synonymous.
Yesterday, and I know this for a fact, black employees at Crawford Long Hospital wore ribbons in solidarity with the ‘Jena Six”. Some of the white employees thought it inappropriate and reported it to their supervisor. The blacks were asked to remove the ribbons, which they did. However, that wasn’t the end of it. Speculation began as to whom had complained. After a time, one of the black women attacked a white woman she believed had spoken to the supervisor.
Blacks do not want equal treatment under the law. They want immunity from the law! When all the Mike Vick stuff started blacks said that Vick should be presumed innocent. When he copped a plea they said he should be allowed to play anyway, as his victims were only dogs. Now, he’s under investigation for a murder in North Carolina. It was only a human is what we’ll hear next.
I support the BTAM, Back to Africa Movement. It would be a proper way to say we regret slavery and good riddance. Then blacks could kill and maim all they want. If you look at what’s happening in Africa, or in any ghetto in Atlanta, you’ll see that blacks love to kill each other. Go to it!

but Mark two wrongs willnever make a right, and if Clinton set up a house of cards, Bush, who was elected to bring the change he said he would bring, should have knocked down that house of cards and made a strong house for us to live in, he didn’t. the information was there, but they didn’t use it. after you assume responsibility to do a job, no matter how bad the guy in that position wa before you, if you have accepted the responsibility to do the job and have told everybody you are competent to do the job, you should do the job, and not cowardly try to wiggle out of it and blame it on somebody else. it happened on his watch, and 8 months is enough time to try harder to protect our country. and before you call me a liberal, or start tearing down the Democrats, I’m not a liberal, I think Democrats are part of the problem and I think Bill Clinton could have been more proactive in the AL Qaeda problem, but so could’ve the 3 previous Presidents. our country’s foreign policy stinks, it brings a whole lot of this crap on to us, dependency on oil causes even more problems, and Bush loves that oil baby. my point is, if you say you can do the job, take the job and you work that job for months, when something goes bad wrong on your watch, it’s not honorable to blame others, leadership comes with perks and it also comes with great responsibility, that’s the downside, take it or leave it, but don’t point fingers at others when it’s your turn to lead, that’s not what good leaders do. Bush was on guard duty when the security breach occurred, that makes him the first place to look for culpability, if you’ve ever been on guard duty before, that is easily understood.

When we expend so much energy and passion into defending black criminal defendants, yet show no outrage and passion when thugs amongst us brutally attack our children while they sleep in the security and safety of thier own homes. I think we appear to have an upside down value system. Incident after incident, we get so worked up if we think that a black defendant is being treated unfairly, but we say absolutely nothing when innocent black children, women and the elderly are visciuosly attacked everyday in this city. Why has the rap community not stepped up to the plate to assist or speak out?

It has been called a “schoolyard fight,” a “brutal attack” and even an “incident.”
But whatever it has been called, what happened at around noon on Dec. 4 in Jena has definitely been talked about.

The “Jena Six” and the incidents surrounding their cases have made headlines across the world. However, the story about the attack at the school that left one white student — Justin Barker — unconscious and six black students — Robert Bailey Jr., Mychal Bell, Carwin Jones, Bryant Purvis, Theo Shaw and an unnamed juvenile — initially charged with attempted murder — hasn’t always been right, U.S. Attorney Donald Washington said. He spent much of his time during last week’s Department of Justice education forum helping to clear up some of the “misinformation flying about.” He also focused on some of the civil rights laws those in the community wanted to learn more about.
Washington and the other forum presenters — Lewis Chapman, assistant special agent in charge of the New Orleans FBI office, and Carmelita Freeman, regional director of Justice’s Community Relations Service — had two goals during the forum. The first was to lay out what the federal government does and can do to help residents, and the other was to come up with a list of concerns so a plan can be made to address them.
Washington stressed that his office has been keeping an eye on the events in Jena but that it does not currently have a case at all — either under investigation or awaiting prosecution.
He pointed out that the only issue that has arisen out of the recent events in Jena that carries federal ramifications is the noose incident. Everything else, Washington said, is a state crime, if anything, and should be handled by state authorities.
“There are more people in this community than black people,” he said during Thursday’s forum. “There are more people in this community than white people. All have to be considerate and work towards a solution.”
Washington said that during his investigation he looked through a number of pictures of the community at events such as football games. He said you often can read a community’s unity through pictures.
“I didn’t see from the pictures a divided community,” he said.
Monday night, Washington said he thought most of those in attendance at the Thursday forum were receptive to what was said.
“I think most of the folks in that audience were people of good faith with an interest in making sure the issue is resolved,” he said. “I think people would like to see a different kind of resolution than this kind of prosecution of these black kids.”
LaSalle Parish School Board member Billy Fowler said Monday that he thinks all of the media attention, and in some cases inaccuracies about the case, have painted LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters “into a corner.”
Fowler said that the boys would have received much lighter charges without all the attention, although the only attention on the case before the charges were bumped from battery to attempted murder was from local media including The Town Talk and The Jena Times.
“I don’t know what (Walters’) thinking, but I’m going to tell you he can’t be resting well at night,” Fowler said of Walters.
These are some of the other things discussed by Washington during the nearly four-hour forum Thursday night:
Selective prosecution and arrest You have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the district attorney decided to treat one group of people different than another, which is hard to prove, Washington said. He said he would have to have proof of Walters’ intentions, such as a record of Walters’ spoken words or somewhere that he had written that intention down.
There have been no complaints of misconduct on the part of the Jena Police Department filed in connection to any of these incidents.
The nooses There was no public denouncement of the noose incident, something Washington said he “sincerely, sincerely apologizes for.”
The nooses weren’t reported to the police, Sheriff’s Office or District Attorney’s Office by the school or any of the parents who were aware of it. It was handled by the school authorities, who conducted an investigation into members of the rodeo team. According to the school, the nooses were hung as a prank in response to a question asked in a “jocular fashion” by a male student at an orientation assembly, Washington said.
The three students found responsible for hanging the nooses have no history of violence. The principal recommended expulsion, but a school district committee overruled that decision and decided to suspend them instead, a decision approved by Superintendent Roy Breithaupt. There were no other problems noticed by the school officials.
Although proving all of the elements of a hate crime can be difficult, Washington stressed that isn’t the biggest issue.
“First of all, as the FBI said (during the forum) hanging a noose under the circumstances these nooses were hung is a hate crime,” Washington said Monday. “… If these were adults who hung the noose, there would be less of an issue with moving forward with the investigation and prosecution.”
He said hanging the noose after a student asks about being able to conduct some kind of activity around school tends to indicate strongly that the white students who hung it were intending to send a message. But because those who hung the nooses were juveniles, it makes the process much more difficult.
He said the federal government rarely prosecutes juveniles, and even if it does, it would be in a juvenile delinquency hearing that would be closed to the public and conducted in a manner that the public would be unaware that it even occurred.
Walters’ ‘pen’ speech Although students have claimed there was a “peaceful protest” at the tree following the noose incident, Washington said he could find no proof of that claim. As opposed to a peaceful response, Jena police officers were called to the school to respond to a number of fights — white on black and black on white — in the days after the noose incident, Washington said.
In response to the growing violence at the school, the principal called an assembly. The Jena Police Department asked Walters to attend and speak. Washington, who spoke to Walters about the assembly, said Walters wasn’t very happy about the request because he was in the midst of preparing for an aggravated rape case.
When Walters spoke to the students, he said they weren’t paying attention to what he was saying or being respectful, Washington said. Washington said the information he received confirmed that Walters made statements about being able to affect the students’ lives with the stroke of a pen, but said that reports that the speech was directed toward black students after peacefully demonstrating aren’t true.
Fair Barn incident On Dec. 1, there was a private, invitation-only birthday party at the Fair Barn. Around 11 p.m., five black students tried to come into the party but were told by a woman that they weren’t allowed inside without an invitation. The boys persisted, saying they had friends inside. A white man then jumped in front of the woman, and a fight started.
A group broke the two up, and the woman asked the white man, not a student, and the black students to leave the party. Once outside, another fight started between a group of white men, not students, and the black students. Police were called, and a white man was arrested. He pleaded guilty to simple battery.
Even though there were reports of one of the black students receiving injuries that required medical attention, there is no record of that.
Gotta Go incident On Dec. 2, there was an encounter at the Gotta Go convenience store that appears to have been spurred by the Friday night fight. The white man, not a student, gave one version of the story, while the three black students gave another. Walters based his charges on the statement from the witness and neither of the sides involved, and charged one of the black students with battery and theft.
The white man ran into the black students, something was said indicating they were going to fight, so the white man turned and ran back to his truck to get his firearm — a regular-barreled shotgun with a pistol grip. One of the black students began to wrestle the white man for his gun, and the other students jumped in to help.
It is reasonable to assume, Washington said, that the two students who jumped in to help and the white man presumed a threat.
Although there were reports of the black students calling the police, there was no report from either the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department.
The Jena High incident Out of the 40-plus statements, including those from the black students and some of the students charged in the fight, none suggested that the Dec. 4 incident was imminently caused by the nooses, although many now are claiming that one could not have come without the other. There was no mention of the nooses at all in any of the statements, Washington said.*
There hopefully this will clear up the massive confusion about this case.

Bush - no comments, we should have some expectations at this point about his decision making and his resolve. Jena - flash, I do not recall schoolyard fights being “crimes”, unless guns or knives were included. According to the reports, the weapons noted were “tennis shoes”. We can not comment on the nature of the Jean case just yet, but from the news footage and stories that are coming out of that area, it does appear there are some judicial differences in how the kids are treated. (And I can not comment on how an adult fighting a teenager is only considered “simple battery”. It all started when a black child was beaten up at a party, or was this information overlooked as well……(and as this was not considered a crime, Joe V., we do not know how many kids participated). The missing records are also a sign of institutional differences within that community. While there are good people everywhere, there are people who may harbor ill as well. We need to keep an open mind and seek the irregularities. There are some irregularities here, don’t you think?

The thing that is being glossed over here is that six guys simultaneously stomping a single guy in the head can not be equated to a simple fist fight. The Jana 6 took the violence to a much higher level than most folks supporting these fellows want to acknowledge. Whether this type of violence is committed by black or white is irrelevant. To say that previous injustices excuses this degree of violence is non-sense. I agree that charging the Jana 6 with attempted murder was excessive, but in no way should this violent attack be excused as a simple fistfight.
There is no doubt that if six friends of the boy who was beaten targeted another black kid for such a severe revenge beating, it would not be viewed as innocently as the Jana 6 attackers are currently being portrayed in the black community.

The torture, gang-rape and murder of a young couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. Their five attackers—four men and a woman—dumped his battered body by a train track and threw her charred remains in a trash bin. The point of that grim essay was to highlight the mainstream media’s disparate treatment of interracial crimes. Indeed, there are some 17,000 murders committed in the U.S. each year, but this double murder was clearly far more barbaric, far more monstrous than most. Yet it never made a headline more than 20 miles from the crime scene—not on NPR, not on CNN or the networks, not in The Washington Post, not in The New York Times. Was the MSM’s lack of interest in this case race related, given that the two victims were white and the five defendants are black?

I am a thirty year old black female and I have never been arrested nor committed any crime. But I do see the unjustice in the world or our so called Justice system. Black people was given just enough to stop fighting for equal rights in the US. How come when a white person and black person commit the same crime blacks get more time. How come we work the same jobs and take on the same duties in life our life is of less value. How come a dog is valued more than our black men. We have to make sure that we dot all our eyes before we cross the street. But most white people or serial killers, they steal and also undermine the justice system more than blacks. And don’t get me wrong I don’t have a problem with any race but I do feel like it is not fair that from birth we are prejudged by society.I feel that everyone is and individual and should be judged in that manner.I wish the laws be reviewed and stated that if you kill someone you get this amount of time and thats for all crime, reguardless of race, age, or gender. We will never be equal and yes the black people who have a lot of money feel like there are different you not you just have more money but you will always be the same color and a great example of that is the movie CRASH.
