Happy? Karl Rove’s gone.

Thinking Right’s notes from the weekend. Pick a topic:

• Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney posted a solid win in the Iowa straw poll Saturday, prompting former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who finished sixth, to throw in the towel. If forced to predict now, I’d bet on Romney to win the nomination, though Rudy Giuliani’s substantially ahead in the polls, nearing 30 percent support while Romney is about 10. Romney grows on you. But if there’s another terrorist attack in this country, Giuliani’s the guy. Thompson was a better governor than his performance in the presidential debates would suggest. The dye job didn’t help, either, if this high-minded corner is allowed to be petty about a Republican’s hair.

• Happy? Karl Rove’s gone. Partisans in Congress and in the media can now focus all of their energies on Vice President Dick Cheney as the evil genius manipulating George W. Bush. Rove’s off to write a book. What Bush really needs now is a veto pen, not political advice. Veto, veto, veto.

• Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega is due to be released on Sept. 9 from prison, where he’d served 18 years for drug trafficking. Panama doesn’t want him back. But it’s clear he still has friends there. Here’s what having buddies in high places can do:

Noriega was sentenced in absentia in Panama to 60 years in prison for embezzlement, corruption and murder for crimes committed during his six-year reign. Panama’s now banned such trials and set the maximum he could serve at 20. But, under legislation passed in January, he gets to deduct the 18 years he served in the U.S., so the most he could serve is two. And the law allows anybody over 70 to apply for house arrest rather than prison. Noriega’s 72. Better to send him to France, where he’s wanted for allegedly laundering about $3.15 million in drug profits. The case is up for a hearing in Miami today.

• One reason education reform never really gets rolling is that the education workplace unions are masters at planting poison pills. Case in point: Alabama set out in 2004 to “reform” the teacher dismissal process. A provision inserted into the law allows teachers fired for cause to continue getting paid until an arbitrator upholds their dismissal. But a teacher fired for alleged criminal conduct can’t be reviewed by an arbitrator. So a teacher facing criminal charges of raping a student, fired in 2005, has been paid almost $100,000 since — and remains on the public payroll. Conservatives should think in terms of changing the system, not tinkering with it. Tinkering doesn’t work. It doesn’t last.

Teachers are rewarded for being loyal to the union more than for the job they do. End all government unions and see how things change.
We could always fire all the teachers and get non-english speaking uneducated aliens to teach for them. They could not do a worse job and maybe they would even do a better job since they seem to have a much better work ethic.

Good morning, Jim,

The forthcoming resignation of Karl Halderman…excuse me…Rove is by no means surprising. It is generally the practice of political minions in both political parties to flee the last months of a political regime. Halderman…excuse me…Rove has stayed around longer than a lot of folks expected. Despite being up to his neck in the Valerie Plame fiasco (I say fiasco because Plame’s status as a CIA operative was about the biggest secret since Mary Todd Lincoln’s spendthrift tendencies at the White House) not to mention his knee-deep involvement in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys (all of which was perfectly legal), he has stubbornly refused to give in “to please the mob.”

Barring another massive Islamist attack somewhere in the United States, stick a fork in it, the administration of George W. Bush is done. For better or worse, whatever the Crawford version of the Urban Cowboy hoped to accomplish has been accomplished. The best thing Georgie Bush can do now for future of the Republican Party is to make like the Great Pyramid and be silent…a wonder to behold but not to hear!

I think Karl realizes this.

Social conservatism is in flux. To wit: the unusual popularity of Rudi Guiliani among even some evangelicals. Corporatism, the capitalist admixture of communism and fascism, has been revealed for its ugly self. Fiscal conservatism has a chance, but it will fall to other hands to implement it, unless, as many suspect, the liberals or progressives can convince the thin pool of independents to cast their lots with the Democrats.

It is at times like this that I sometimes envy the parliamentary form of government. Bush, being finished, could resign in favor of another powerful Republican…say Fred Thompson, for instance…instead of being a benign non-entity for the next 17 months or so. Alas, in our presidential system, such an avenue for efficiency is not provided.

Wonder if Alphonso…excuse me…Alberto will be next?

Good morning all. I think there are three Republicans who can win in 2008. I have previously declared myself a Fred Thompson man, and have yet to see anything to change my mind. I think Mitt Romney is the most intelligent candidate in either party, and he is the only front-runner with any significant private-entity executive experience. I also think Rudy is the most electable Republican, as I think he would pick off New Jersey and maybe New York. Among our Democrat candidates, I think only Gov. Richardson is supportable, and his odds are longer than Mike Huckabee’s.

Karl Rove is a political scientist on a par with the brilliant Dick Morris. Dick Cheney is an intellectual-visionary on a par with Thomas Jefferson. I’d rather have Cheney advising me than Rove. Maybe Noriega can get a job advising Hillary since Sandy Berger will be out of action for a couple more years.

I presume the victim-student in the Alabama teacher case will actually collect all of the funds paid by the state to the teacher. Anything else would reflect government logic.

I wish to add an item to the discussion – last week I asserted that there are no Democrats out front on the earmarks issue, that all of the reformers are Republicans. While that statement remains true, I wish to cite one courageous Democrat who is voting against his party in the earmarks battles: “Only one Democrat voted against pork more than a fifth of the time—Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, who racked up a 98% antipork score and is unlikely to be invited to dinner with any Appropriations Committee chairmen anytime soon.” http://www.opinionjournal.com/diary/?id=110010462 The John Fund essay also provides another hilarious John Murtha exchange – what a crook!

How do you ever expect to reform public education?

The public school system exists as a creature of government.

What happened in Alabama was the result of the shortsightedness of legislators.

Besides, public schools are a popular venue. Almost everyone currently in the United States, except maybe Miquel and Pancho, has at sometime in their lives gone to school. Ergo, they are experts on how how schools should be run. Every two-bit politician from Presidental candidate to candidate for dog-catcher has an “education” plank in his or her platform.

We don’t want to reform schools. They might start working properly and we wouldn’t have anything to gripe about.

As to quality teachers, just keep it up. If No Child Left Behind (No Teacher Left With One)is left in its current form, within ten years there will be such a shortage of teachers, Miquel and Pancho may have an opportunity for a whole new profession!

GaTeacher, the problems of the Georgia educational system can be reduced to this aphorism:

Garbage in, garbage out.

Thanks to people like you infesting the teacher population, we could add this corollary - garbage, taught by garbage, remains garbage.

I think I can field the “victory in Iraq” question. The defining criteria must necessarily include the three major population groups of Iraq, thus the victory has political compromises inscribed in the articles of surrender which the “enemy” must sign.

Therefore, Victory in Iraq includes:

1) The destruction of all rogue shia militia forces.

2) The destruction of all rogue militias posing as Al Queda in Iraq.

3) The destruction of all rogue Sunni militias.

4) The political adjudication of the 13-centuries-old sunni/shia rift.

5) The securing of all porous borders to prevent incursions by new rogue militia units reinforcing AL Queda in Iraq.

6: Securing Kurdistan, and adjudicating newly established liasons between the Kurds and the rest of Iraq.

7) Holding the secured areas with 500K non-sectarian US troops.

Estimated time of US troop withdrawal after “Victory in Iraq” is achieved: 150 years.

Estimated cost: 10 trillion by 2025.

Victory is Iraq is a bumper-sticker, and is emblematic of jingoistic demagoguery.

Well, Rove done gone and now there’s no brains in the White House to tell the people even where the bath rooms are. Us good Christian conservatives will sure miss him. He got all the godly people on the side of My President and made sure the godless U.S. attorneys was fired. He never got rid of Social Security like he wanted but it wasn’t his fault. All the old codgers got all fired up and Congress got too scared to fix things. The only way we get rid of Social Security is to pray to God to take away all the old useless people that drain our pocketbooks. I’m ready to go down to the Church of Holiness and pray for that. It would be really something if about 40 million codgers was taken away in one night. Sort of like a small Rapture.

I can’t stay long because I’m scared this RCH guy will invite me out on a date the way he done the rest of you in the past couple days. He must be a mean one to beat up on this Mexican woman boss he had.

I’m telling you, this education will be the ruin of this nation. Them teachers just set around eying the girls that come to school and waiting for their chance. Except the gay teachers. They just eye the boys, sort of like TFTT. I say get rid of the schools. I never made it out of the 5th grade and it never hurt me none. All a home needs is a bible and a book on cow deseases. You don’t need school to read that. Just look at how education has already ruint a bunch of people. It let a hack like jbmlaw go to Woodrow Wilson Law School and be a lawyer that falls on the people like a hungry wolf. And now people like @@ is teaching the kids. I wouldn’t let her look after my cats if I was gone for a few days. They would all come down with venerable disease.

Anyway, the GA teacher union is so powerful I halfway expect to see all the teachers go out on strike any day now.

But back to poor Karl Rove. I hope God blesses him as much as the libruls cuss at him. You get a good godly man like him in the White House and this nation has some hope. With him gone, we are on the way to being a godless nation run by this Pelousy woman and Hillary. Why, just look at the polls lately. The minute word got around that Rove was leaving My President’s ratings went way down, from around 33% approve to only 30% approve. And about 65% of this godless country don’t approve of My President. That’s the thanks he gets for trying to set us on a godly moral course. Where you smite your enemas in Iraq and turn things over to godly Christians at home.

Regarding Rove, it is apparent that one’s opinion of him falls into one of two categories based on the following.

Either this administration has been a resounding success or a dismal failure.

Of course, the reality lies somewhere in between.

Most here know my feelings on the matter, and for the most part I feel that the legacy of Bush and Co. will fall squarely in that second camp.

Look to no other than Mr. Wooten himself for an example of the wise counsel that our President probably receives - veto, veto, veto.

Ironic for a president who had what, maybe one veto in his first five or six years with a Republican led Congress?

And our esteemed columnist accuses others of partisanship. Unfortunately, this is typical for those high-minded neo-conservatives and their infallible judgments.

Only time will tell, of course, if Mr. Bush was remotely close to being correct about Iraq or not, but I believe there is one thing that is irrefutable - Rove, Cheney, Bush, et al have demonstrated an arrogance, no hubris, and intransigence, hopefully not again seen for a long time in the White House.

Hey, its good to have a dream, isn’t it?

Greetings on this back-to-school morning. I am in a quandary at the news from Washington regarding Mr. Rove. My mother often told me, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”, advice which I often forswore and lived to regret. On the other hand, there is the infuriating vision of Mr. Rove waddling off into the sunset, smirking while the country has to cope with the horrific effects of his time in power. What to say? I guess that, as a parting gift, I can only wish him what he strove so mightily to arrange for so many - an extended solitary stroll along the once-lovely banks of the Tigris.

That’s a talent I do not see in Democratic candidates at this time. Hillary is SELF-promotion personified. Edwards is still proving how great he is even though his beginning was meager. Obama is simply proving that he is not ready for the biggest job in the USA, big ears, big charm and light on intellectual prowess and use of it.

But back to the White House, we are most fortunate to have Dick Cheney, a friend to the end with Bush. jbmlaw has correctly compared him to Thomas Jefferson and I concur with that.

With the current troop deployments and no available troops to replace those currently in country, the US ground forces would be broken. Where are the chicken-hawks when you need them?

They are rushing to their doctors setting up excuses….errr…sorry.. histories of ailments that woud make then inelligible for the draft. They will, of course, not stray from the grand tradition of the likes of Chamblis, Cheney, Rove, etc. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

DebbieDoRight I remember that even with the closing of the draft, at one time men over 18 still had to register for Military service. Is this still being done? I had to register many moons ago back in the Seventies. So yes getalife I was willing to lay it on the line. How about you?

Debbiedoright Will you be so bold in September. Hillary and others are already changing their tune. Will you?

Many of the Democratic Candidates, especially Hillary sense more good news in the September report. They are now backing off the wholesale withdrawal from Iraq. In political terms, their strategies are a balancing act. In her public appearances, Mrs. Clinton often says, “If this president does not end this war before he leaves office, when I am president, I will.” But she has affirmed in recent months remarks she made to The New York Times in March, when she said that there were “remaining vital national security interests in Iraq” that would require a continuing deployment of American troops. The United States’ security, she said then, would be undermined if part of Iraq turned into a failed state” that serves as a Petri dish for insurgents and Al Qaeda.”

Which way is the wind blowing today Hillary?

Good afternoon, looks like the morning blog was a washout, but for Southern Democrat and AmVet. I suppose the identity theft accomplished his purpose, since the blog appears to be irretrievably off-kilter now. By now, Southern, you are aware of Ann Marlow’s article in today’s WSJ with a differing point of view on Afghanistan, “On the Road to Jalalabad - Don’t believe the naysayers. Afghanistan is doing as well as anyone has a right to expect,” http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110010464

AmVet, your post is mostly well-considered. I disagree with one of your lines – “And our esteemed columnist accuses others of partisanship. Unfortunately, this is typical for those high-minded neo-conservatives and their infallible judgments.” I respectfully suggest that Jim used the term pretty neutrally, the same way I use “leftist,” more as an identifier than an epithet (surely you do not suggest there will be a Republican witch hunt to get Rove?) I also think Mr. Wooten misused the term, however; a more ideologically-oriented term, such as “leftist” or perhaps even the dreaded “moonbat” would have been more appropriate, as there are no sensible Democrats who hold such bizarre feelings toward Mr. Rove.

Can someone actually quantify how Dick Cheney is comparable to Thomas Jefferson, please? I have heard some dumb things before, but that one takes the cake. So Bush’s brain is leaving, finally. How will we know the difference? And what rules was Rove using in “running the country”? Certainly not the constitution. But it is nice to note that even Dusty knows that the President is not running the country, but Rove, Cheney and Company, with GWB as the figurehead.
Veto, veto, veto… good advice, Jim. Wouldn’t want to actually have anyone on the right think about a bill and consider whether it might be good for the country.

RCH: You can’t win in the middle east. Millions have lost their lives trying. No one, since the Ottoman empire, has even come close to winning. And now that the Middle east is modernized and caught up with the rest of the world, it’s impossible to even fathom a win by a foreign country in the middle east.

Israel, is backed by US dollars and fire power, and can’t contain control over the Palestinians. Russia had to finally give up on Afghanistan, Great Britain left and divided the region into two separate countries (Iraq and Iran), because they couldn’t control it. Good luck on that one.

How do you come to any conclusions over a straw poll where a grand total of 14,000 people voted? Can JW assure us that the people that were bused in to Iowa over the weekend by Romney were there to vote and not just to eat the barbeque? Romney spent $2 million on the show, or $442.00 per vote. Huckabee, who finished second spent $150,000 or $58.00 per vote. Giuliani and MCain didn’t even bother showing up for it.

Thanks to insiders like JW, the Wootang Gang is privy to exciting information such as the application of new algorithms devised by the RNC in order to predict voting patterns. Code named “the Grecian Formula”, the RNC can now make more accurate predictions as to who voters are likely to reject in the coming primaries.

I think Mr. Rove’s legacy will be akin to Cardinal Richelieu’s. Brilliant in all respects, successful in achieving stated goals of the executor (excuse me, executive), yet damaging to the body politic of the nation-state as a whole.

As a moderate Democrat, I certainly admire Mr. Rove’s political abilities (I daresay envy), but mourn their cost. The public service goal of ensuring the election of like-minded persons to further your notion of what’s best for the U.S. is a noble one, but the ambition of creating a “permanent majority” is political hubris and leads all too quickly (as we saw from both sides) to the politics of destruction.

One other note, our Attorney General’s name is Alberto R. Gonzales, not Gonzalez. Though we might wish to change his title, he cannot change the spelling of his surname.

Jbmlaw’s and Dusty’s comparison of Cheney to Jefferson is an interesting one. While Jefferson’s gentleman-agrarian Utopia soundly contrasts with Cheney’s corporate manipulator-in-chief ideal, it was Jefferson who masterminded the reckless, no-holds-barred partisan attacks of the Presidential election of 1800, which some historians believe was the most politicized in our history.

Jefferson, as Adam’s Vice President, paid for pamphlets to be printed that excoriated Adams with trumped-up accusations as well as feeding lies to the press about his “monarchial ambitions.” Jefferson, still Vice President, also secretly wrote a resolution for the Kentucky legislature, which was passed, claiming that each state could anull a federal law (in this case, the wretched Alien and Sedition Act) that it felt was unconstitutional. And there is an uncomfortable parallel between Cheney’s antigay politics, having a gay daughter on whom he depended during the election, and Jefferson’s impassioned defense of liberty while owning and depending on slaves, including his biological children with Sally Heming. Jefferson also won the Presidency, after a tie for electoral votes with Aaron Burr, based on a secret deal in the House that changed one crucial vote.

Vicious politicization, treachery, hypocrisy and ruthless self-interest. This is the underbelly of Jefferson’s brilliance, but it is the sum of Cheney.

Mr. Wooten writes, “One reason education reform never really gets rolling is that the education workplace unions are masters at planting poison pills.”

And once again in your column (Hey, we got it in writing) you demonstrate that you don’t know what in the hell you are talking about when it comes to the ills of public education and ways to help fix them.

As regards your remarks here, “A provision inserted into the law allows teachers fired for cause to continue getting paid until an arbitrator upholds their dismissal. It doesn’t last.”, how ‘bout in tomorrow’s column, you plead the same thing about elected public officials?

No liberal will have any objection to treating the two equally. Let’s see if you do. Let’s see some of that passionate conservatism at work (in writing).

Jbmlaw,

I did, indeed, read the WSJ piece on Afghanistan. I thought it typically well-written and edited (as all pre-Murdoch WSJ pieces are), but with a few gaping holes. The author tends to overlook her own facts while making questionable “excuses” (Afghanistan was always poor, etc.)

I also personally abhor the IED deaths in Afghanistan/Iraq comparison to U.S. city murder rates. As we were all reminded by the Minnesota bridge collapse and the New York manhole explosion, events of an abnormal nature (i.e., one goal of terrorism) affects the national psyche many more times over than individual murders which are statistically almost always linked to either the drug trade or family/passion, and are hardly ever random in nature.

Let’s see. I would be happy if Rove had not lied to the veterans in SC in the 2000 electon about war hero John McCain being left mentally unbalanced by his POW experiences. (or that McCain had had a child with a black prostitute)

Or if he had not outed a CIA operative whose specialty was Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Or if he had not fired REPUBLICAN prosecutors because they would not investigate innocent people so the GOP could win close elections.

Or if, and this is too much to ask for, if Jim Wooten was not such a partisan hack that he could actually think instead of drinking the Bush kool-aid every day where he ignores 4 long years of lies about Iraq… WMDS… the press won’t report the “good” things… the surge is working.. etc.

Shar, is there anything POSITIVE in your life? Have you ever noticed anything notable in anyone?

Thomas Jefferson was one of the most brilliant in the originators of our government. Our documents have held up well over the years probably due to his expertise.

So you want to bring up Jefferson’s “underbelly”, mainly because a conservative made a good point about him.

Cheney is brilliant in this day and time. That quality has been recognized by many in government who were quick to enlist his enormous talent. He has served well under many Presidents. There is no indictment, no moral lapse, no family failure in his record.

As with most smart people, he is also a good businessman. I think you do not like that either. You mentioned treachery. Like what?

No Laughing Matter: There were rumors about a duel during his diplomatic posting to France, but I am unaware of any confirmed gunplay. John Adams would have said, however, that Jefferson was very handy with a knife from behind. They became friends again after eleven years, when Jefferson finally admitted what he had done, and their ensuing mutual correspondence is as yeasty a national resource as was Adams’ with his wife, Abigail.

Jefferson did, however, passionately support a war that he refused to personally fight in. Does that count? It is worth remembering, however, that Jefferson’s support invoked a price on his head in pounds sterling, while Cheney’s war support has flooded his own hands with sterling.

Dusty @ 2:25: I went back to the Revolution because that’s where you went in supporting jbmlaw’s comparison. And yes, I have noticed many positive, notable things in others, including in your posts. However, I strive to maintain a balanced perspective, considering both the good and the not-so-good. Theodore Roosevelt, that Republican icon, said that Jefferson was the least able man who ever held the presidency, which seems to me to be overly harsh. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, including my own personal American political hero, Abraham Lincoln (cliched, I know, but true), who abrogated the Constitution by suspending habeas corpus in Maryland. A great man and a good man, but imperfect like us all.

In reading your posts over time, there are a couple of consistent themes that tend to undermine your arguments, and which are reminiscent of Mr. Rove’s tactics. Your points are all-or-nothing, ‘with us or agin’ us’, with little consideration of the substance of someone else’s point of view. You also seem to fall back reflexively on personal attacks. Why on earth would you imply that I have nothing positive in my life, when this is the very first time I have ever addressed you? Or suggest that I ‘even know dirt’ on Jefferson, when what I recounted is common knowledge? Or categorize me as hate-spewing “far left lib”, when you have no familiarity with my political views? Throwing out unsubstantialed, immoderate accusations in place of considered thought gives your posts the appearance of irrational rants and undermines the credibility of your positions.

You are clearly a loyal American citizen with a passion for your country. I believe it was also T. Roosevelt who said that a loyal citizen gives of his (or her) brain as well as brawn, that following like sheep is not loyalty but laziness, that active citizenry think critically for the betterment of a beloved nation. I don’t believe that ignoring facts or brandishing wholesale accusations is in keeping with active citizenry, and I also don’t believe that personal attacks encourage thoughtful, respectful interaction.

Oh, and treachery? The exposing of a covert operative’s name is recognized as treasonable.

Dicky Doo was pretty shrewd when it came to devising a scheme to use cutouts and subsidiery companies to do business with terrorist states such as Libya, Iraq, and Iran while CEO of Halliburton in spite of prohibitions. Got to give him credit for the evil genius that he possesses. This self proclaimed “super patriot” also was very skilled in doing an end run around the rules, using the U.N. Oil for Food program to do business with Saddam. Dick Cheney has no morals, ethics, or scruples. He has consistently put commerce before country. He is no patriot by any stretch of the imagination.

You leftist moonbats are ganging up on my friend Dusty, but your efforts are completely impotent.

Her points are well reasoned, completely logical, morally upright and therefore unassailable.

For instance, this gem provides an example of her perfection: “How about a list of all the poor Democratic leaders who are still poor? Those that missed “flooding their hands with silver” while working for the government. Let’s see: Pelosi, Edwards, Reid, Durban, Boxer, Kennedy, Shumer,et al ..all poor as church mice and all working in Washington during this war. Oh but that’s DIFFERENT!! Yes, they are all wealthy but were sacrificing while Cheney was sufficing..or something. NO INDICTMENTS & NO GUILT…just plain old insinuations as usual at Cheney.”

Surely Jefferson himself could not be more eloquent. I rest my case.

I am not saying he is “guilty”, I am saying that he ignores the constitution, ridicules and belittles his opponents, works in secrecy, ignores Congressional oversight authority, cooks up crazy arguments to avoid having any checks and balances on his authority, shoots friends and gets them to apologize, makes unsupported statements about our enemies, fails to properly plan for the post war occupation of Iraq, selects himself for veep, etc., etc. ad nauseum. He may not be “guilty” of anything other than complete arrogance, but he is clearly not “brilliant”, or a statesman, or a deep thinker. So, I ask again that you enlighten us as to why you consider him to be “brilliant” and “similar to Thomas Jefferson”?

Jbmlaw @ 3:07 and Dusty: I failed to make my comparison clear. As Dusty made plain, being wealthy is not a sin in an of itself, unless you take unauthorized shortcuts as did several politicians of every stripe. My comparison was the risk/reward ration of Jefferson and Cheney’s support for the wars of their time. Jefferson put his “life, liberty and sacred honor” firmly on the choppping block by advocating revolution against the most powerful nation in his world. Cheney has made a packet for his friends and himself by advocating a new American paradigm of unprovoked military aggression on the part of the strongest nation in our world.

Sorry for the confusion.

NO INDICTMENTS & NO GUILT…just plain old insinuations as usual at Cheney

Hey bogus lawyer man, can we admit the following FACTS into evidence, then? Or will you get some Repub-appointed “activist judge” to squelch the evidence, wink wink, nudge nudge?

(1) Cheney held secret meetings with his energy exec buddies while collecting a paycheck as a public servant, and then claimed they were classified, and refused to allow the sunshine laws to illuminate either what was discussed or what was agreed upon regarding national policy and the role of this room full of his buddies.
(2) He violated Senate decorum by telling an elected US Senator to go “EFF” himself.
(3) He shot his friend in the face on Saturday, and refused to discuss the matter with police or take a breath test until Sunday. (4) He refused to testify to the 9/11 commission until it was guaranteed that he would not be sworn under oath, and there would be no public record of said testimony. (5) Halliburton stock has been performing quite well since 2003. (6) He recently stated for the record that he was not part of the executive branch, even though he had previously cited executive privilege for his secret meetings.

Dear Shar,

I do not need or ask for your survey of my posts. You brought up nothing positive AGAIN. Jefferson stands in history as a leader and brilliant. I do not bother with the dirt.

Your every post has leaned liberal without a doubt. I have read them quite a few times and know what to expect. And if you want a critique of YOUR posts, I would say you are an old Democrat who taught history in high school or a small college. You are not mean enough to be big time academe but write well enough for the other. Do you like critiques? We can all give them.

You presented nothing that was an indictment of Cheney. Just the usual rumors and somebody said. Not one thing illegal.

Yes, I am a loyal American and do not like the injustice being dumped on our Republican leaders. They are human and not perfect like all of us but they are not criminal. That is what liberal Democrats WANT them to be.

But there is nothing to prove even as Democrats spend most of their time trying to find something. Give it up. Appreciate your country for a change and show it.

I am especially envious of those bloggers who are respectful in their discourse whether they chose argument, rhetoric or humor. Those who practice such courtesies are worthy of respect if only for their decency.

On the other hand, this blog wouldn’t be worth spit if we didn’t overthrow the PC-infected discourse of some conversations. I don’t recall anybody needing an ambulance for harsh language and I, for one, enjoy the give and take even when someone calls me a Nazi - or worse. I’d rather have the honesty.

Again, let me praise those on those who take the high road and conduct themselves with dignity and let me encourage those who use that “coarser language” to at least have something funny to say.

Just back from the dentist, whence - if he had been of the all-or-nothing school so revered on this blog - I would have returned either toothless or still unclean. I am happy to report that he used his mind evaluate the good and the bad of my teeth, and acted accordingly. I don’t know how better to support a measured and reasonable approach, and I appreciate the improved outcome.

Dusty, you got me on old. I took history at a large university, have never taught and have never affiliated myself with a political party. I dislike and distrust them in equal measure, and so evaluate candidates independently (that critical thinking thing again!) I voted for Bush once, and if absolutely pushed into a voting booth right now I’d vote for Richardson or, among the front runners, I’d reluctantly vote for Guliani.

Your projection of what “liberal Democrats want” is indicative of the poison that has polluted the country, and is foolish beyond permission. Liberal Democrats, like conservative Republicans, agnostic Libertarians or even apolitical coal miners, want what they perceive to be best for this country. Only the few, like the Unibomber or Timothy McVeigh, want to force an evil of their own devising. The rest of us want to make the country better. All of us. We differ on the specific goals and tactics, but an exchange of those ideas should benefit everyone. Using tactics of accusation, ridicule and marginalization undermines the country, as does wilfull ignorance of mistakes. “I do not bother with dirt” means “I will not acknowledge or learn from errors”, and that attitude has crippled the Bush Administration.

Your admonition, “But there is nothing to prove even as Democrats spend most of their time trying to find something” sounds precisely like what the Democrats said about the Republican effort to impeach and convict Clinton. You cannot support one and not the other. Political parties’ slash and burn techniques, at the country’s expense, are disgusting and dangerous, and are a chief reason why I’d never join or endorse one.
