Cobb ‘targeting’ immigrants? Nonsense.

For decades now state and local governments have been stymied in their efforts to police public spaces — downtown streets and parks, for example — because those efforts prompted allegations that they were “targeting” some particular segment of the population.

Cobb County commissioners faced those same allegations Tuesday night in an effort to crack down on a growing neighborhood blight — single-family houses that had become multiple- or extended-family dwellings similar to boarding houses. In one instance reported by the AJC, a family of 10 from Mexico — including a husband and wife, their two children and two of the wife’s brothers, one of whom has a wife and two children — lives in the 1,511-square-foot home. Neighbors complained that the driveway and front yard had become a parking lot.

At its Tuesday night meeting, commissioners unanimously approved a new law requiring each adult to have 390 square feet of living space without county approval. The same would apply to each car visible from the street. No more than six adults, and only two unrelated, are allowed to live in a home, provided each has the 390 square feet of living space. The previous law required 50-square-feet of sleeping space. Critics contend the new law targets immigrants.

But as reporters noted other communities, including Athens, home of the University of Georgia, have similar local laws on overcrowded houses.

Cobb commissioners did the right thing. One rowdy house or one that appears to have gone to seed begins the process of destroying a neighborhood. One of the reasons the Five Points area of downtown Atlanta has been virtually abandoned by the banking, business and legal communities is that the city could never muster the will to police the streets of derelicts so that they became kind of an urban campground. Any attempt to do so brought forth protests that officials were targeting specific populations. The result was that business and people with options fled, allowing the dominant order of the streets to become the lowest conduct tolerated. Now it’s an open-air lounge for the unemployed and the unemployable.

The good news in the Cobb action is that public bodies may be regaining their confidence and their senses and are able to withstand the knee-jerk “targeting” criticism to do what’s best for their communities.

Why on Earth would this column and so many people practically beg for immigrants (uh, ILLEGAL immigrants) to be targeted and then when they finally are targeted deny they are being targeted and go “oh, no, we are not targeting illegal immigrants?”

OF COURSE immigrants are being targeted. That is what we asked for!

Harold, having a guy across the street renting his house while trying to sell it for at least $60,000 too much (good freakin luck), is not going to complain.

All you have to do is go to the police zone community meetings. Every other question is “Can we get rid of all the Mexicans?” And the cops go “No, Mr Garrison, we can’t get rid of all the Mexicans.”

I really don’t understand this law. How can a county regulate how many people i want in myhouse or how many cars I’m allowed to have under my carport/garage? This is ridiculous. I expect lots and LOTS of lawsuits; good thing Cobb is used to being sued.

Good morning all. I perceive unnecessary legislative action in Cobb County. Rather than passing sweeping “prohibitory” legislation, we already had a fully sufficient common law remedy – “nuisance abatement.” I do not disagree that a property owner should have right to contest a change in use by others that adversely affects his value, and certainly turning a yard into a parking lot may so-qualify. A suit against the owner of the changed property, for loss of property value, fully compensates the injured owner.

On the other hand, there is no reason anyone should care if there are 12 people living in an 800 square foot cracker box, so long as there is no external blight. Unless Cobb County determines to invoke the death penalty for a single violation of its law, I would oppose it, as officious regulatory overkill.

When I was 19 I lived in an apartment with 11-12 other people. It was very crowded and we ended up ruining the place. We were all white kids as well as are the typical residents of a college town. Also at that same age my group of friends were numerous but we were not a gang, we were driven out of several places and denied service at restaurants. This is all in Cobb county. Why did no one hear about it? we were all white kids. So they have absolutely no ground to stand on. This kind of enforcement has happened for years and targeted non-minorities.
I am sure that if we were not white kids we would have protested and complained because we were very angry, but we knew we had no leg to stand on so we dealt with it.

Well, I was right sorry to see Sister Dusty wants the Northern Ark to end with a steep dropoff into my trailer park. She don’t like me none and still blames me for Joe Bill doing the No. 1 on the altar down at the Church of Holiness while he was drunk. She needs to learn good Christian Forgiveness and Brotherly Love. It ain’t very seemly to hold a grudge like that so long. For a good Southren woman at least. You can expect it from one of the Northren hussies but not from somebody like Sister Dusty.

I’m all for Cobb running the Mexicans out. When you got a little house and 15 cars parked around it all night you probly have the right to think too many people live there. Either that or the owner is a real car nut or NASCAR has found a cheap way to get out of a big motel bill for the week.

Up here in north Forsyth we don’t have a lot of Mexicans yet. I am worryed though that one day I’ll step out of my trailer and see about 50 Mexicans coming out of a trailer and having a big party. And there goes the neyborhood. Right now we live nice and quiet and the police only show up oncet in a while when Billy Joe and his wife gets in a big fight or they do a drug bust or something like that.

So I say good for Cobb. Run the Mexicans clear out of the state. Just don’t send them up GA 400. If the rich people want to keep hiring them let them haul them in for the day and run them across the state line before dark. Cobb is about the only county that is doing anything about the Mexican problem. I recall a few months ago they arrested a pair of Mexicans for working on some building on Sunday. Instead of kicking back and having a few beers after church and playing poker like decent people do.

Well, I got a lot of beer to haul around to the bars. Anyway I’ll check in oncet in a while. I bet it won’t take TFTT long to figure a way to turn this topic into his rant on all the crime of Those People or against this Rednecks NAMBLA guy. I just want to see the way he works it in. When you got a crazy guy like that you just can’t tell how he will bring it up.

Oh and one more thing. If there are too many people living in your rental property, there is little you can do to prove it and almost nothing you can do to kick them out. When they do eventually move out, there is no legal action you can take against them, especially illegals since there is no way to get a judgement against someone who does not have a credit history and will not be going through normal channels to buy a house. You cannot discriminate against hispanics from renting because that breaks federal law. So a landlord who ends up with either a pile of teenagers(very destructive) or even illegals (not too destructive) is forced to deal with it and pay the repairs when they finally move out.

I will never be a landlord until there are more legal protections for landlords in the case of people who are illegal and thus not accountable to the legal system.

DebbieDo(Nothing)Right,

With regard to your argument yesterday that the Douglas County DA should be prosecuted for distributing child pornography.

Do you see a disconnect between your argument today and your earlier argument Wilson should be released because this was just sex between teens?

If the female in question is now a child then Wilson should do the entire 10 years.

If the female was of sufficient age to consent then the tape is not “child pornography”.

So which is it Deb? Oh, I forgot your position is simply that a white prosecutor was responsible for sending this innocent black youth to jail and you do not care about the facts.

The law was created to protect the 15 year old, not just to punish the 17 year old who plied her with alcohol and then taped the abuse. The punishment is simply a result of the crime the young man committed.

Well, everyone is right “spritely” this morning. I hope harold got the bugs out of his teeth (good one, harold).

I also hope that common sense is not illegal, as DDR and jbm seem to think. Most communities have laws against raising animals in their territory. Yet someone making their yard and house into a “pigpen” has to be overlooked. Making restrictions on “pigpens” hardly seems more restrictive than gated communities which can be found in many locations.

The fact that this rule may hit “illegals” who should be deported anyway according to law, is inconsequential. This restriction hits whomever is making the mess.

In case none of this works, please take these “neighborhood disrupters” and drop them off at that trailer park in Forsyth County. They can “pack a parked one” and get their beer right off the truck.

Mr. Wooten, yet again you must be admonished that it it OK to admit that you prefer to try and solve what you deem a problem with profiling, as is the case with this new ordinance in one of metro Atlanta’s most progressive counties.

As we all know Cobb county has massive problems with white folks living like sardines in houses. This rampant “house-packing” by middle and upper class Republicans is out of control and needed addressing.

Jim, what is so damn difficult in saying that you, like I, believe it is better to support targeting our illegal southern neighbors in an effort to enforce the law than to pretend that this is something other than that.

Your credibility once again sir, is in the toilet and goes to the very disingenuous essence of neo-con spin and double-talk.

If the female was of sufficient age to consent then the tape is not “child pornography”.

Sorry, JD, this is an incorrect statement. Even if a child consents to engage in pornography, it remains a felony to sell, purchase, distribute, or even download from a free web site. There is NO EXCEPTION in the law for any act of distributing pornographic material involving a minor.

The Douglas County DA’s degree of misbehavior is as bad as the prosecutor in the Duke rape case, though of a different type. He should receive at least as severe a penalty.

If Wilson’s family could afford the same kind of legal firepower as the thugs of the Duke lacrosse squad (and yes, they are ill-bred thugs by any consistent standard), he would not be in jail right now. But the Douglas DA got away with his crusade. Nifong was caught and punished, and rightly so.

Doesn’t the county already have an ordinance that limits single-family housing to a single family? The extended family can be included as long as the extended family doesn’t consist of another nuclear family as it did in the case of the Mexican family that prompted this new square footage ordinance. Boarding houses have existed in Cobb County for a long time but it’s open season on Hispanics and there’s a no bag limit so, happy hunting!

SO far, it’s still a peaceful migration of immigrants into Cobb County. It will remain peaceful as long as Wooten doesn’t mention the alamoway. Wooten: ixnay on the alamoway.

Just let it go. Wooten: read U.S. Grant. Grant had a lot to say about our land grab from Mexico in the 1840’s.

So to sum up, your article today was bold, incisive, and fair. I especially like the part where you say, “I call them illegal immigrants in Cobb County because they ARE illegal immigrants, and the ARE in Cobb County”. This response is not aimed at AmVet per se, but rather at responding to his/her use of “profiling” in the situations in which Jim Wooten has today’s topic - overcrowding homes. (And please keep in mind, I RARELY agree with Jim Wooten).

I am fortunate not to live in a rowdy neighborhood nor do I own an extra house or any rental property.

Once again, the Cobb County Council is showing itself to be a backward, bigoted, national laughing stock. It is obvious that this law is intended to get rid of Latinos, whether or not Mr. Wooten would like to admit it. If one reads the accompanying article, on another page, one can see the exact words of Cobb residents.

My first apartment in Atlanta had two bedrooms and was a little under 700 square feet. Built in 1920, it was intended for a small family and contained 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and a parlor. Two people sharing this apartment would be illegal according to Cobb’s new standards.

Additionally, if I were to buy a house, with my partner, to share with his elderly parent, the law about unrelated adults (regardless of house size) would proclude us from doing so. But then again, Cobb made it clear in 1992, how it felt about me and my partner. As a developer, one would have to think twice about putting up homes in such a short sighted community.

Almost 10 years ago, I bought my first house in a small, quiet subdivision in unicorporated Duluth, where I lived alone as a single 30-something female. About one year later, a family of Mexicans moved next door with two white vans loaded with ladders. The family included a mother and a father and at least six children ranging from teenagers to elementary school age. The mother was either pregnant or became pregnant shortly thereafter. Neither parent could speak a word of English.

They proceeded to close in one side of the garage, which had two doors at the time, and turned it into a bedroom. Next, they painted the house a horrible shade of lime green and got paint on my house in the process. Meanwhile, I began to see lots of men in their 20s at the house, either on the front drinking beer while shirtless or lounging on the back deck. My guess was that the family was renting rooms to these men on a temporary basis because I would see different men every few weeks. At times there were as many as four white vans in their driveway or on the street in front of the house, but usually no other cars.

Meahwhile, my life turned into a nightmare. These people began to spill onto my property. They used my front yard as a shortcut to the street when walking to the corner store and back. I’m talking about adults as well as children. They dropped food wrappers and other trash as they walked in my yard. I had to pick up their trash on a daily basis. They often urinated behind my chimney, and the stench was terrible. Meanwhile, they threw beer and soda cans into my flower bed next to the chimney.

To make a long story short, I moved after almost 18 months. My house sold quickly to a lady who could not speak a word of English. Now, the entire neighborhood looks like something from a third-world country. There are junk cars parked everywhere, trash in almost every yard, some lawns without grass, children’s toys strewn about, and most homes in various states of disrepair. It’s very sad.

I see. And the answer to your question is no.

Don’t get me wrong RCH, Cobb is, as many people across the entire nation already know, absolutely notorious for passing some of the most asinine and backwards statutes in the entire country.

And if there exist laws, in that county that already adequately address this issue, I wouldn’t be in the least bit surprised.

Why enforce the law when you can just pass another one? It’s the American way!

My point, is that some of the bigots, whether in the Cobb county school board, county commission or columnists with the AJC, will try every trick in the book to cloak their reactionary ideology with doublespeak.

Even when as in this case I agree that using the law to justifiably minimize or eliminate a problem - people here illegally - is a good thing!

I truly believe that this complete unwillingness to address this issue and take ANY action is not good for America.

I am not saying deport 20 million willy-nilly though. But if you’re here illegally and you screw up, you’re gone.

Get real, Wooten. Municipal and county police have been targeting Hispanics as well as blacks for years—not just in Cobb County but also in other metro Atlanta areas. And Cobb isn’t the first area to target multiple-resident housing. The City of Roswell had a big brouhaha over the issue three months ago; worse, city council members have been major advocates of “redevelopment” of an area now largely inhabited by Mexican-Americans, although they have raised a big stink about a proposed Charlie Brown high-rise development that might affect the lily-white, upper class subdivisions near Georgia 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road.

The English novelist Thomas Hardy once wrote, “Some people call a spade an agricultural implement.” Let’s at least call the animus against Hispanic residents what it is: racism and nativism. Stop pretending that race and ethnic background don’t matter in the decisions made by area authorities. The kind of sophistry that pretends a Cobb County decision is purely objective has been afflicting the South for centuries. Stop denying the obvious. It’s time the supporters of the Cobb initiative and others like it at least have the guts to come right out and say they dislike Hispanics and don’t want them living in their neighborhoods. TFTT, though racist to the core, at least has the courage to voice his hate openly. The gutless Wootens of this world love to cover their stink-piles with expensive perfumes.

Yes you can. In your rental contract you can stipulate the number of people who can reside in the house/apartment. You can also add a clause in that you, the owner/landlord; will upon necessity give regular unnannounced visits to the property in order to ascertain that said property is being maintained in the manner in which it was originally rented.

A third thing that you can do is put a codicil in the contract stating that if you the owner/landlord are aware of any people in the rented domicile over a certain limit are residing in the property for more than 30 days but not on the lease; that you the owner will have the right to demand that the leasee vacate said property OR pay a substantial increased security deposit.

As one of my neighbors said I don’t care where you live but how you live. I have a boarding house two houses down from my house! Saturday is taxi day as taxis make beer runs and bring more friends. The Mexican radio music is blasting loud enough to be heard more than a few houses down. All these men do is stand around in their tshirts and drink beer. The next door neighbor does have her house for sale. Anything that can be done to stop this in my neighborhood I will support. As for targeting Mexicans I think this rule also applies to foster parents who cage the kids and have about 12 kids to one house.
I would even take this a step further that it is the beginning of limiting the number of children one can have - if you can’t support a child with enough housing space don’t have them. It’s all a matter of choices.

I suppose any law that can be deemed to “target” any group should not be enforced.

Thereby drive-by shootings and beatdowns at Six Flags bus stops should be legal because they “target” rapper wannabes. Similarly, lynchings should be legal because laws preventing lynchings “target” Robert Byrd KKK types.

RCH of course not. but zoning laws generally state that collecting junk (e.g. tires, junk cars, old washing machines, etc) on your property is not a legal use for something zoned as residential. in the case where junk tires are allowed, public health laws can be used to remove the problem (though i fail to see the problem with ‘mesquite’ attraction - maybe just have everyone over for a bbq to settle the dispute). extra cars in the driveway are neither junk (though maybe not as nice as your car), nor a public health hazard.

It doesn’t matter what race you are. The issue for residents is that their quality of life is suffering, while others don’t seem to care.

Homeowners should have the expectation of a certain quality of life. However, when a neighboring house turns into a rooming house (regardless of who occupies it), then the property values go down.

The neighborhoods in question aren’t zoned for such type of housing, so the Cobb Council was well within its rights to cap the number of people living in a house.

Since our federal government refuses to enforce the law, Cobb County wiil have to follow State laws. I have no idea what those laws are and do not care.

My point is New Haven Conn. is handing out ID cards to illegals but the State AG said it was not legal.

What a mess and we have ganzo’s testimony yesterday which he refuses to coorporate and lies. He thinks accountability is some kind of joke.Pathetic as usual.

Anyhoo, Cobb County should check State laws because your AG may enforce the law but who knows.

Of course this regulation targets Hispanics. Wooten’s example is about Mexicans, as are all the other commenters today (except the post about white college kids). Athens’ ordinance targets college students. Whether you think the ordinance is suitable or not, be truthful enough to admit who it is targeting.

Do you think there aren’t blacks and hispanics who work hard to invest in a nice home? Do you think they look at their trashy neighbors and can’t harbor resentment for the negative effects they’re having on their property values? The people here who cry racism are the true racists.

Gigi@10:27

I’m sorry to read Gigi’s story. Sorry to say, it has become a common occurence. But there are others.

Some newly weds in my family bought a very small home in an old subdivision in southern Gwinnett. They make their little home very attractive. When a new Hispanic family moved in next door there was a bit of worry. The new owner had two white vans with ladders but they were parked discretely in the back yard behind the house anytime they were at home. The mother and two children kept the place neat as a pin. Soon they made a few changes. All new windows went up, cedar (lookalike) shingles were attached and a little dormer placed on the roof. The place is as “cute as a button”.

Across the street is a two story brick home of a Hispanic contractor who built over the original home. The yard is landscaped with a brick and cast iron fence. It is a very nice place.

Every house in the subdivision is NOT in great condition. But many are being upgraded. Many are owned by Hispanics. I only mention this because those immigrants who come here legally infuse our country with new enthusiasm and appreciation. They are usually good citizens.

For those who come here illegally whose only intent is to use our country as a money making machine to send money home, I have no appreciation. Hard work is exemplary but it does not replace legality. Not conforming to laws is usually called criminality.

“I suppose any law that can be deemed to “target” any group should not be enforced.”

As Adam clearly stated if it is Hispanics breaking the law so be it. Race should not be an excuse for not enforcing the law. Are we now afraid that this action may disrupt the sanctuaries of the illegals?

Alberto Gonzales’s performance testifying to the Senate Judiciary Committee was nothing more than a desperate attempt to cover up the gross improprieties of the Bush White House. The chronology of events that led to the firing of the eight United States Attorneys last December seems to have gone something like this:

Karl Rove produced a list of U.S. Attorneys to be canned for not being sufficiently partisan in the cases they chose to prosecute.

Gonzales signed off on the political purge without so much as a second thought because he knew that’s what the White House wanted. Gonzales did not question the merits of Rove’s list, or look at the performance evaluations, or even give courtesy calls to the targeted attorneys. Gonzales fired them in a pretty brutal manner, but what would you expect from a guy who argued in favor of torturing people?

Karl Rove intended the purge of the U.S. Attorneys to accomplish at least four simultaneous results:

1). Stop or obstruct investigations into Republican public corruption cases. Rove wished to block future “Duke” Cunningham-type prosecutions from emerging that could damage Republicans in 2008.

2). Make it clear to the other eighty-five U.S. Attorneys their jobs were on the line if they did not show sufficient fealty to Rove’s political project. The firings threatened them with the prospect of being replaced by “loyal Bushies,” (as Sampson put it). Any U.S. Attorney found to be overly aggressive in prosecuting Republican officials on corruption charges might end up with his or her head on a platter.

3). Pepper into the U.S. Attorney offices new super-loyal Republican partisans who would initiate spurious lawsuits against Democratic officials in vital swing districts and states that could be helpful in 2008. Rove wanted to promote prosecutors in the mold of Milwaukee’s Steven Biskupic, who brought a groundless suit against a subordinate of Wisconsin’s Democratic governor so his Republican challenger could run TV attack ads slamming him for “corruption.” (Judge Diane Wood of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh District subsequently tossed out the case saying the evidence was “beyond thin,” but not before the political damage had been done.)

4). Direct the new Rove loyalists in the U.S. Attorney offices to employ their powers to assist Republican voter-suppression activities with the aim of disfranchising African-American and other Democratic voters through specious “voter fraud” cases.

Gonzales owes his entire legal career to George W. Bush. In his confirmation hearing he promised to cast off his role as Bush’s consigliere when he became head of Justice Department. This promise was bogus.

The “Bushies,” (as they like to call themselves), have shown they are geniuses at covering their tracks, destroying incriminating evidence, disavowing close ties with identified perps, and having fits of selective amnesia. Even when there is overwhelming evidence of fraud, false statements, and stealing they have been largely successful in stonewalling Congress.

Attorney General Gonzales is given a free ride to cover up the fact that his Justice Department has become a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party. It’s long past time to impeach his a$$.

By RP July 25, 2007 10:58 A i should be able to do whatever i want to my property, as long as it fits within zoning guidelines. if it detracts from my neighbor’s property value…

RP, zoning guidelines is the key. I am a liberal regarding most social issues; however, property rights for all must be protected. We have a situation here in the boondoggles where no zoning exists. Many couples and/or individuals have built nice homes, only to have some sloppy person move next door, park their junk heaps, throw old tires around etc.etc. The list is endless. I personally would never buy a home in a neighborhood where strict, enforced zoning laws did not exist. Adequate housing should be available for everyone. If one lives in a public housing project, keep your surrounding clean for goshsakes. It’s no disgrace to be poor; it is a disgrace to be disrespectful to others. Living like a pig in one’s surroundings is about as disrespectful as one can get.

With regard to your argument yesterday that the Douglas County DA should be prosecuted for distributing child pornography.

JD that’s the law. The DA, the great defender of the law, should know it better than you or I; but alas, he broke it. The same judgement should be foisted upon him that he foists upon others.

Do you see a disconnect between your argument today and your earlier argument Wilson should be released because this was just sex between teens?

No. How is there a disconnect? I said that Wilson should be released because the law that he had been convicted over has now since be repealed. Totally different. I’m amazed YOU can’t see the difference.

If the female in question is now a child then Wilson should do the entire 10 years.

Huh?

If the female was of sufficient age to consent then the tape is not “child pornography”

The LAW AT THE TIME, which has since been repealed, says it was so. The law however has been changed in regards to TEENAGERS CONSENTING TO SEX.

So which is it Deb? Oh, I forgot your position is simply that a white prosecutor was responsible for sending this innocent black youth to jail and you do not care about the facts

JD, JackA$$ DumbF*ck; show me in ANY of my posts on the subject where I said that. You can’t — and you KNOW you can’t. I, unlike you, was looking at the case from a facts and precedents point of view. You and people of your ilk, were looking at it from a racial point of view. I don’t care if the kids in the case were all WHITE, the law, as it was written at the time, had too many loopholes, (which is why it has since been plugged up and the language changed to reflect the correct intent of the law), and was a badly written law. Duh.

The law was created to protect the 15 year old, not just to punish the 17 year old who plied her with alcohol and then taped the abuse. The punishment is simply a result of the crime the young man committed.

Why enforce the law when you can just pass another one? It’s the American way!

Or you can stack the Supreme Court to interpret things your way! Or you can attach “signing statements” pre-emptively interpreting the law that Congress passed, in direct contridiction to the intent of the Congress.

Or, you can declare yourself “not a member” of that branch of government and refuse to supply information. The list goes on and on. Our current “leaders” in Washington have become increasingly inventive in their additions to “the American way.”

Before President Bush heads down to Crawford to clear brush for another season, why not put him on the spot? The Democrats should use the week before summer break to push legislation that would require mandatory paid vacation for every American worker.

The U.S. stands pretty much alone in not requiring paid vacation. It’s not just “workers’ paradise” countries like Sweden that mandates it (5 weeks per person guaranteed). They also have it lean, mean capitalist nations like the UK (4 weeks) and Japan (2 weeks) and even in bona fide third world countries like Brazil (6 weeks). But in the US, fully 25 percent of workers receive no paid vacation at all. 25 PERCENT!

The time for mandatory paid vacation is now.

4 living in shacks arrested

NORCROSS - Four men were arrested Monday after police found the group living behind a Norcross Mexican restaurant.

According to arrest warrants, Jose Manuel Vario-Cruz, 30, Alfredo Hernandez, 42, Wilfredo Brito-Vincente, 45, and Oscar Juan Morelos-Bermeo, 31, set up “small shacks” behind Los Recuerdos restaurant at 5385 Jimmy Carter Blvd.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney said an officer was conducting an area check at 7:20 a.m. when he discovered the men. Until a report is filed, Moloney said, he would have no other information about the incident.

Messages were left for the manager of Los Recuerdos, but calls were not returned.

The men were charged with littering and criminal trespassing, the warrants said. According to jail records, all four were also charged with an outdoor storage violation.

I suppose you’re a Mayflower descendant, Chris? Or are you a native American? You know, many people thought the Irish shouldn’t be allowed into this country because they were a dirty mass of people. Before you start to talk about language, there are still groups of people, in the Midwest, who speak German almost exclusively. New groups have always maintained their language; it was the children of those first settlers who took on more English.

So, how long has your ancestry been here? Was it before Ellis Island and are you sure they were all documented?

DebbieDoRight@11:32,

Since you seem to have dusted off the lawbooks, perhaps you can tell us why what is written is not applicable to citizenship because there are loopholes.

Contrary to what many liberals have brought into this discussion on housing restrictions, the requirements for citizenship are still in place. And if you are not in some legal process of citizenship and are not a citizen of this country, then you can be deported.

The Immigration Department is still working and they make the news quite often. Ten million illegals cannot be deported in a day and they did not “just come” in the last seven years.

My point was about “illegals” and their deportation. Deportation laws are a different entity from housing restrictions. So…what??

Groups who wish to maintain and speak their native language are welcome to do so. However when communicating with govt. agencies and the such we need one common spoken language.

My question regarding the tape is - was it evidence in the case? If it was, then would it be considered part of the public record of the trial?

Evidence in a case does not necessarily equate to public access. There is evidence in the Nuremberg trials that even now, more than 40+ years later, we the public have not seen.

AND evidence that is compiled in a criminal case concerning rape, incest, molestation, etc. epecially where the victim is a minor, some aspects of the case are not open to the public. (For instance: The victims name, etc.)

Just 11 days ago, the Washington Post’s Christopher Lee noted, “If anything looked like a sure thing in the new Congress, it was that lawmakers would renew, and probably expand, the popular, decade-old State Children’s Health Insurance Program before it expires this year.”

It’s a no-brainer, right? Who’s going to balk at an established, successful program that offers health insurance for kids?

Well, first the president balked, saying expanding healthcare access for children in middle-class families ran counter to his ideology, and he would therefore veto the bill. However, just three days ago, bipartisan support for S-CHIP expansion was so strong, proponents of the bill believed they could likely override a veto.

Not anymore. As part of a reminder of why congressional Republicans lost their majorities, a handful of top GOP leaders have decided to align themselves with Bush and against healthcare for children.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The prosecutor in the case of a Liberian native charged with repeatedly raping and molesting a 7-year-old girl said Monday that he is filing an appeal of a controversial judge’s ruling that dismissed all charges because an interpreter who spoke the suspect’s rare West African dialect could not be found.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy called the ruling last Tuesday by Judge Katherine Savage “improper,” adding that his office has “requested that an appeal be taken to reverse the court’s order.”

Savage ruled on July 17 that Mahamu Kanneh, a Liberian who received asylum in the U.S. and attended high school and community college here, was denied a speedy trial after three years awaiting a court-appointed interpreter who could speak the tribal language of Vai. Linguists estimate that only 100,000 people speak Vai.

Savage called her decision one of the most difficult she’s had to make in a long time, especially since she was aware of “the gravity of this case and the community’s concern about offenses of this type.”

Det. Omar Hasan wrote in the charging document that the victim “attempted to physically stop the behavior from the defendant, but was unsuccessful,” the Washington Post reported. Kanneh threatened the young girl “with not being able to leave the apartment unless she engaged in sexual behavior with the defendant,” Hasan wrote in his report.

McCarthy charged the delays cited in Savage’s order to dismiss the “result of the court locating a qualified interpreter,” and not the fault of the prosecutor.

“The fact is on four separate occasions this court provided Vai interpreters,” McCarthy said, adding that one of the interpreters had agreed to participate in further proceedings.

Court records, meanwhile, show that an interpreter was “sworn” by a Maryland court on the same day Savage dismissed the case, FOXNews.com has learned.

Loretta Knight, a clerk with the court system in Montgomery County, Md., claimed she had been unable to find an interpreter to stay on the case, even after an exhaustive search that included the Liberian Embassy and courts in 47 states.

But a look at the court docket for July 17, the day the case was dismissed, shows the entry “Interpreter sworn.” Several items below in the docket, Judge Savage “grants defendant’s oral motion to dismiss case based on a speedy trial violation.”

A review by FOX News of the audio from that hearing shows, however, that an interpreter was present throughout the entire court proceeding, during which time Kanneh’s lawyer, Theresa Chernosky, argued that her client had not been able to get a good job because of unresolved rape charges.

Chernosky is heard also telling Savage that her client works at a gas station, and has not signed up for school because of the uncertainty about his future.

The translator can be heard throughout the entire hearing.

Savage, however, notes to that the events in the case were “unforeseeable, truly difficult in terms of the interpreter issue.”

She then tells the court that “in spite of herculean efforts on the part of the state’s attorney … time has become the enemy.”

“What we come back to, then … too much time has passed, is that it’s the defendant who hold speedy trial rights.”

The Washington Post reported, however, that Kanneh had waived his rights to a speedy trial.

Why Savage dismissed the case when records indicate an interpreter had been sworn is just one of several questions raised by an examination of records by FOXNews.com.

Records from a case-worker report dated Oct. 31, 2006, show that the case worker visited Kanneh’s residence to check on him and instead found another sex offender, Sehkou Massaquoi, at the home along with two male children who shared the last name of the defendant.

Massaquoi is currently on probation and “was associated with the same victim” as the defendant.

“The defendant was not at home at the time,” the case worker’s wrote. Later in the day, however, Kanneh spoke to the case worker and told him “he was unaware that those children were in his apartment while he was there. He just comes home from work and goes to his room every night.”

A Nov. 1, 2006, report from the clinical psychologist, Joseph G. Poirier, noted that the defendant came to the U.S. in September 2001.

The report states that Kanneh was born in Monrovia, Liberia, on May 19, 1984, but at a “very young” age moved with his family as refugees to Guyana, where he was introduced to English (Guyana is an English speaking country in South America, a former Dutch colony that later became a British possession before independence in 1966).

“Presently, Mr. Kanneh’s command of English was reasonably good, but he commented that at times he still did not understand English very well and would require continuing explanations until he did understand,” Poirier’s report also states. “Mr. Kanneh was aware of the allegations involving child sexual abuse, he was aware of the role of significant courtroom players.

“We found Mr. Kanneh to be responsive and able to meaningfully participate in the screening interview,” the report continues. “Likewise, we would anticipate that he will be able to adequately assist defense counsel especially if time is taken to explain to him matters or events that he does not readily grasp because of his language/cultural background.”

Kanneh’s mother, Florence, was the subject of separate charges last year, FOXNews.com has learned.

Hasan arrested Florence Kanneh on two charges of witness intimidation and two child abuse counts on April 5, 2006, according to court records.

Florence Kanneh was given probation before judgment on one of the child abuse charges of which she pleaded guilty on September 14, 2006. She also was ordered to have no contact with either of the witnesses.

The witnesses said, according to the charging documents from interviews taken on February 9, 2006, that “Florence Kanneh wanted them to retract their earlier statements” made to authorities.

In those statements, one of the witnesses said Florence Kanneh had threatened to send him back to Africa as well as threatened to use Voodoo on him if he didn’t change his story to police.

According to the charging documents, one of the witnesses told authorities that Florence said, “She was going to use Voodoo on anyone that had lied about either Edward Massaquoi or Mahamu Kanneh.”

The other witness said Florence Kanneh put him into an institutional home and said she would only release him if he changed his story. The witness also claimed that he “had been deprived of food” by Kanneh.

The witnesses at one time lived with Florence Kanneh, but no longer live with her.

And in another motion, filed only earlier this month, Mahamu Kanneh’s defense lawyer levels an accusation at Hasan, the lead investigator. She wrote that because he is “potentially involved” in a scandal in the Montgomery County police department in which some officers worked as private guards during regular work hours, his credibility has been compromised.

The motion does not specify what Hasan’s involvement may be, but she asked that crucial evidence be tossed, including DNA testimony and witness statements. The motion was never ruled on before the Kanneh’s case was dismissed.

FOX News, meanwhile, spoke with a man Sunday who claimed to be Kanneh in a five-minute phone conversation conducted in English. He said the allegations against him were false and the dismissal of the charges was “a good thing.” Asked if the accusations were true, he responded, “I said what I had to say” and hung up.

The Washington Post wrote in its article that in just one night reporters were independently able to identify three Vai translators available to assist in the case. It noted that the need for interpreters has risen starkly in Montgomery County, Md., with the court system spending $1 million in interpreters in 2006, or 10 times the amount it spent in 2000.

According to witnesses, who originally reported the case to authorities, Kanneh allegedly repeatedly raped and sexually molested the girl, a relative. In a statement made by the girl to police, she said she had been told she’d be forced to stay in the apartment unless she had sex with Kanneh.

Interesting. We have the right to understand the charges against us and we have the right to a speedy trial. That is the system that has been in place and its unfortunate that it didn’t work out for the prosecution in this case, just as innocent people are occaisionally convicted.

The Senate overwhelmingly approved a wide-ranging overhaul of student loan programs early today that would pay for more than $17 billion in grants and other student aid by slashing subsidies to lending companies.

Democrats and student advocates said the legislation, which passed in a 78 to 18 vote, would help millions of Americans pay for college in a time of steady and often steep tuition increases.

The bill now heads to a conference to reconcile differences with a version the House passed last week.

The action on Capitol Hill comes as the student loan industry has become the subject of a nationwide investigation into questionable business practices.

Chris 12:48 I LOVE THIS!!! The mexicans should not be here anyway! Get the hell out of our country! They have no right to be here, illegally, making our safe, white, clean neighborhoods dirty and an eye sore. Go to Gwinnett where all of the other illegals and gang members live.

Whine, whine, whine, white swine!! I HAVE TO PICK UP A LITTLE BIT OF TRASH…BOO HOO What the hell is wrong with you people? Can you even hear yourselves?

“This might target a certain group yes but come on I am sick of garages used as other rooms with clothing hanging in the window. Have a little class!!!”

You don’t think you might sound a little shallow?

“The Mexican radio music is blasting loud enough to be heard more than a few houses down. All these men do is stand around in their tshirts and drink beer.”

And white Americans DON’T do this?

Do you even have the slightest world view concept? Have you ever even taken one min. to look outside yourselves?

“For those who come here illegally whose only intent is to use our country as a money making machine to send money home, I have no appreciation.”

So many have families traped in impoverished conditions and admirably put themselves at risk of imprisonment or death to feed their families.

“It doesn’t matter what race you are. The issue for residents is that their quality of life is suffering, while others don’t seem to care.”

Yeah, it’s a disgrace that these immigrants fleeing for their lives can’t have a little bit of compassion on you poor urbanites with your 2.5 baths…I mean, come on.

“Many couples and/or individuals have built nice homes, only to have some sloppy person move next door, park their junk heaps, throw old tires around etc.etc.”

So forget being thankful that you have a home to go to…

Here’s my suggestion…take a lesson from South Florida’s new community, “Ava Maria”…here all good little Catholics can gather and raise tons more little good Catholics…here it is prohibited to sale contraceptives and pornagraphy…everyone attends the huge new community church with the world’s largest crucifix…everyone is neatly tucked away in their own little bubble where they are safe from sin and outside influence.

“Now, the entire neighborhood looks like something from a third-world country. There are junk cars parked everywhere, trash in almost every yard, some lawns without grass, children’s toys strewn about, and most homes in various states of disrepair. It’s very sad.”

Ever live in a third world country? There are more important things in life than a messy yard…like compassion for human suffering. My point being…if you can afford the luxury of being a racist…you can obviously afford to move…so move. Move where you have like-minded bigots to affirm how right you are. Meanwhile, the rest of the world will be free to continue humanitarian efforts to make the world a better place

Sounds like some of this stuff is a fairly good argument for living in a neighborhood with an active HOA. Multiple cars parked outside for more than a certain period of time is a violation of our HOA’s convenants, for example.

Don’t get me wrong — I don’t mind folks working on their cars in their driveways, but if the cars parked at a given house start spilling into areas that impact me directly (e.g., blocking the roadway, etc.), I start to get a little bit annoyed.

catlady, well said in your 11:34.

Or you can stack the Supreme Court to interpret things your way!

Apparently it takes a long time for “strict constructionist” justices to affect American jurisprudence! But with that said, and I know that 7 of the 9 nine justices have been appointed by the GOP, it is all the more amazing that this new generation of Republicans have accomplished so very little of note or value over the past dozen years or so.

Or you can attach “signing statements” preemptively interpreting the law that Congress passed, in direct contradiction to the intent of the Congress.

This is a dicey one for me. The president has SOME strong powers, as it should be. But starting with Ronnie, and his boy Samuel Alito, there is little doubt that the overuse (misuse?) of these statements by the GOP has culminated with W’s predilection for and sometimes outrageous efforts to re(mis)interpret and misdirect existing law.

Or, you can declare yourself “not a member” of that branch of government and refuse to supply information.

It is almost impossible to believe that the ghosts of Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon are alive and well in the White House, but based on the paranoid secrecy of this administration, it is hard for me to draw any other conclusion.

The list goes on and on. Our current “leaders” in Washington have become increasingly inventive in their additions to “the American way.”

And so we now have this joke that passes for leadership and governance.

Methinks you’ve taken most of these comments out of context. Who said anything about lack of compassion? Well, some perhaps but not most. Most Mexicans I’ve met are talented working people. Why do you think they are here? The point is if you have a roof over your head, you can keep the trash picked up. Those I’m referring to around here (the messy ones) are not Mexicans; they are white folks who simply could care less. This is not just a regional problem. Our SUVs will be useless against them. Why, the Illegals will use our traffic laws against us, and we’ll all be stuck in traffic while they thumb their noses at us as they pass in the HOV lane, from the back of the pickup trucks, and make it to their jobs on time easy as pie.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/stories/2007/07/25/grassnw0726ns.html?cxntlid=homepagetab_newstab

Cobb County has decided to mow its tolerable height of weeds and grass from 21 inches to 12.

The modification is part of Cobb’s effort to update its nuisance ordinances, that Rudy Giuliani-inspired approach to government that says elections are won by keeping the streets clean and the lawns mowed. This version of the weed-control law was enacted in 1993.

I’ll tell you what’s awkward. It’s when you are behind a pickup truck with an illegal alien sitting in the back facing you. Dont you hate that? I mean, you cant really look away, and you end up staring at each other, and it gets weird fast. Especially if you’re stopped at a red light and you’re nose to nose, face to face. I really hate that.

You pretend to play with the radio, or grab your cellphone, like you’ve got a call, but when you do that, he counters with an Ipod, or he’ll pretend to move a rake around like it was loose or something. Then you glance back up and he’s staring at you again, and you at him.

So that’s when you start looking for a break in traffic to get into a different lane…. but the illegals counter by pretending there’s a dog in the road and they swerve into the lane you’re changing into, and you’re back to square one.

What do they want? Why cant the illegals look to the side or sit the other way? Why do they have to stare? It’s just not fair.

Child poverty is on the rise in Georgia.

Georgia has the second-highest percentage of high school dropouts in the nation.

And the state’s rate of low birth-weight babies is among the worst in the country.

These are some of the “discouraging findings” in the 2007 Kids Count data book released today, a compilation of state and federal information that ranks Georgia among the worst states for taking care of its children.

The number of children who live in poverty increased 11 percent from 2000 to 2005, the report says.

The report notes that one in four of Georgia’s children lives in poverty and that 285,000 don’t have health insurance.

The combination punch of poverty, poor access to health care and a lack of education contributes to parents’ failure to get proper prenatal care.

The number of babies born weighing less than 5.5 pounds increased in Georgia 8 percent from 2000 to 2004.

The high school dropout rate for teens ages 16 to 19 decreased to 10 percent between 2000 and 2005, improving the state’s drop out rate by 38 percent.

“Progress on family poverty is stalling in the country, and that’s certainly true in Georgia,” Nelson said.

But, considering the state’s low ranking year after year in the report, he said, “Georgia’s aspirations for its kids still have a ways to go before they’re fulfilled.”

in all seriousness Princess Diarrhea as some amusingly called her with blunt contempt was as vile and repugnant as they get. the puke making grovelling and hysterical obsessive fawning when she died was just as absurd as the recent moronic fuss over the worthless spoiled slapper P Hilton. Diarrhea was pretty dim and stupid academically - about as dumb as morons like J Conyers or M Waters, or R Kennedy jr/Naomi Wolf (not joking here either). She was despicably manipulative, a sluttish wh ore in every sense of the word, she married SOLELY to get the title, money and position. Her “work” consisted of occasionally genteely kissing a few AIDS babies - but ONLY in front of the cameras. Her “campaign” against landmines was similarly narcissistic - show up and be snapped whilst gushing about the horridness of it all in horrendously expensive designer tops/jeans etc. She was heartily despised in the UK by many of us. Happily her antics, along with Randy Andy and the euqally grasping sad slapper Hippo Hips Fergie et al helped to undermine the monarchy - which as a proud right wing secularist I utterly detest. Brenda and Kevin - The Queen and Phil the Greek will be the last pair of witless ruling class uber rich arsewipes with that kind of regal pandering/fawning.

Princess Diarrhea was about as down to earth as the Paris Hilton slut and about as sweet as a spitting cobra - away from the smirking oh so gracious movie premiere persona. You are either incredibly naive or incredibly stupid to have swallowed all that royalist bollocks. In a meritocracy only Princess Anne would have made it. She very quietly went about her third world charity work with NO cameras - wandering about darkest AfriKa in small, not well protected convoys roughing it as the average aid worker would.

I give Prince Charles credit for marrying Camilla, since he is obviously not so shallow that all he cares about is good looks. Diana was used for her looks, to bring some attractiveness to the royals. After she popped out her two handsome princes, she had fulfilled her duties and her usefulness, and Charles went back to his true love

Lily, NO….not you too!!! Camilla was a homewrecking, two-timing tart!! Charles is nothing more than a shallow, runt, who, if luck would have it, will NEVER wear the crown because his ears and head are too dang big!!

The royals USED Diana. During that time, (and I think it comes up like every 5 years or so), it was time for the people of Britain to vote on whether they should keep sustaining the Windsors, (they pay NO taxes), OR drop them. There was a movement going on to drop them, all of them have their own fortunes, and Queen Elizabeth is one of the wealthiest women in the world.

The royals needed to appear as if they gave a rat’s behind about “commoners”. Then voila, out of their arse they pull Diana show her to the press and hint about a possible love affair between her and ugmo charles!! AS If!!!

Only congenital MoRoNs “loved” Diarrhea!! Like they really knew her!! Through their peasantish glossy magazine cover photos and brief glimpses of it all dolled up at Leicester Square film premieres.

Diarrhea was detested back home by millions. Yes there was some nauseating, hysterical fawning when MI5 killed her in gay Paris (see the loony paranoid bollocks of the sleazy corrupt arab grocer who runs Arabs in Knightsbridge). She was as thick as pigsh!t … that’s truly NOT a joke.

British Royals NOT world famous … ones that crackpipe aint ever heard of anyway!!

Richard the Lionheart … see Shakespeare’s plays, the crusades etc.

Charles I - see Cromwell and the English Civil War - just more deranged control freak religious nutters killing each other.

Oh and no one ever heard of Queen Victoria - see the ‘Victorian’ period in history - just the SIX/SEVEN DECADES of the brilliant world conquering British Empire which very happily we sensibly dumped after WWII.

And its NOT just England crackpipe - see how insular and pig ignorant so many yanKKKees are about world history and THEIR roots!!! Its England Scotland and Wales.

Dear Heart, I’m anything but one of Those People (Neo-Con so called compassionate conservatives). Actually, I’ve never met one of Those People who are really compassionate. Try approaching one of Those People and explaining that children do not choose their parents and need a fair chance in life. We’re a rich country etc. etc. Medical care for everyone would be a good example. You’ll hear something like, “I’m sorry too, but……” Heck no, they are not sorry. They are ‘sorry’ in a different context. You’d be amazed at the number of ‘good ole boys (girls)’ who don’t have a pot aspire to this concept. They have a roof over their head, so everyone else must be sorry. And then there’s the rich trash but that’s another story. I don’t care who you are (white, black, brown or George Jefferson’s zebra who lived upstairs), if you make a mess, clean it up!!!! If you need the junk car for your repair business, keep it but hide it, and please DO pick up the trash!!!

Diana put class back into the house of Windsor - Did you mean class or a, or did you forget about her infidelity?

GTFOH!! She was married to an unfaithful philanderer who obviously liked ugly, horse teethed women; (which means after she had the heir and the spare, he probably no longer liked fulfilling his husbandly duties with an attractive woman), and she was LONELY.

HE had messed around on her first anyway, with an ugly woman!! Do you have any idea what that does to a woman’s self esteem? That’s like you leaving your wife for Janet Reno!! Imagine the shame she must’ve felt. She probably had the affair to prove that someone thought she looked better than a horse!!

Moron Jim says: Cobb commissioners did the right thing.

What Moron Jim fails to tell you is that this is completely a false logic. He compares people living in a house (i.e. NOT homeless) to an area with a lot of who don’t live in a house (i.e. homeless)and then draws a false conclusion that one will become like the other. I would much rather have 10 people who together can afford living in a crowded house than being forced into the street because individually they can’t afford the rent or payment. But that’s OK to Moron Jim and his Snobb county buddies. Hell with them families that can’t buy a $300000+ home and the taxes. Them and their kids can live in the street. But they better do it in downtown Atlanta where all the homeless go.

Another thing Moron Jim doesn’t tell you (actually outright lies) is with this law, like so many others in this backward, narrow-minded, Republican, neocon controlled state, Snobb county IS targeting immigrants. Don’t forget this is the same county that issues a statement that homosexuality is ‘incompatible’ with their ‘lifestyle.’ I’m just swinging blind here, but I think that is the lifestyle of hatred and intolerance. Like segregation and apartheid. But, that’s OK to Moron Jim and his KKK and white supremacists buddies. Hell with them Mexicans and their families. They ain’t good white Americans like the rest of America. Besides, their all a bunch of illegals so it’s OK not to treat them as human beings. Just like Moron Jim’s family treated the slaves they probably owned.

Well, I’m about thru with my 2 hour lunch break and I see the topic has turned to that poor princess getting kilt in a car crash and who run around on who. Well, when you drive on the wrong side of the road like the English do you know your time is coming.

I think the running around comes from the English being wired funny. I think this girl friend of Prince Charles looks kind of like a man and that is why he likes her. Like I bet this TFTT is gay as a May pole. Besides, when you have buck teeth and a horse face like the prince you got to take what you can get.

And from what I read his wife eat a whole bunch of stuff all the time and then stuck her finger down her throat to get rid of it. Who wants to be around a woman that smells like that? The missus ain’t that way. She eats all she can hold and gets rid of it the reglar way.

Anyway, sorry to see this blog has went downhill like a rock falling off of a cliff. Maybe it will be better for a while on Thursday. Well, the boss is trying to call me to see where I am and I ain’t going to answer. He don’t need to know what I do when I’m at work.

Illegals are illegal criminals by definition. If you don’t like the law, try to change it, but don’t pick the laws you want to break and complain when others don’t want you to break them.

I think drugs, gambling, and prostitution should all be de-criminalized (none involve harm to anyone that didn’t inflict it on themselves), but I don’t assume I can participate in these activities with impunity, either. That’s what the Netherlands is for ;)

Segregation,

You said:

We’re talking about people whose only crime is crossing a border to feed his family. If illegals commit a crime, yes they should be deported.

First of all, yes…crossing the border is a crime, and they know it. Second, so is identity theft/fraud. So is paying a coyote to help you across the border. So is trespassing on private land. So is leaving trash on public and private land. And in case YOU hadn’t noticed, many of the above crimes are committed to help commit the original CRIME of sneaking into another sovereign country. And what is with the false characterization of all the illegal immigrants as poor, persecuted hard-working family people. I wonder how many of the border crossers have a family to support. And sorry, but I have been through many, many neighborhoods, and you don’t feed your kids with F250s, $1000 wheels, 12-packs of Coronas and eelskin cowboy boots. I’ll accept that some portion of the illegals are hard-working, honest family-centered people (because some are) if you’ll accept that some portion are criminals, ne’er-do-wells, and generally nasty people. And I know and like many “foreigners” who are here on various visas or as resident aliens. And they don’t appreciate people who can’t be troubled to follow the laws of the country that THEY love and have spent time, money and effort to legally emigrate to. Some of the staunches opponents of illegal immigration are recent legal immigrants. How do you explain that? Surely Mexicans can’t be prejudiced against Mexicans, can they? I’m a liberal for the most part, but don’t like freeloading criminals of any sort.

what a giant moron you are crackpipe … it wasn’t “her” (Victoria) lovey … it was liberal and tory/whig govts … plus the unequalled in those days British Army and Royal Navy and unequalled British mining/industrial expertise!!

I mentioned three world famous monarchs - their place in history is assured. who gives a flying F what the towel heads think about the crusades. both sides were genodical murderers?

Charles I’s era was ANYTHING but “boring” … Cavaliers and Roundheads … The New Model Army, the epic struggle for the nation - with the fairly brief supremacy of a puritan led parliamentarian army against a motley bunch of papists/cornish/porridge gobblers/welsh sheep shaggers/loyal monarchists etc … another wonderful bout of English repression in fenian land across the “Irish Sea”. The restoration, the liberalising and relative religious tolerance of folks of differing. still deranged dogmas after the restoration, the divine right of kings to rule getting a bit castrated at Westminster … hardly “boring” crackpipe!!

The Victorian era was our swansong … pure magic most of it … hammering backward third world rabble on the battle field, redistributing/rechannelling their wealth and natural resources, a mostly kindly subjugation whilst helping many of them build a railway, instigating the foundations of our world famous - world envied civil service, ensuring proper - mostly kindly paternalistic govt and teaching most of the happy empire builders to play cricket …

“what is with the false characterization of all the illegal immigrants as poor, persecuted hard-working family people.”

It would be about as accurate as your false representation of all illegal immigrants as criminals. Pot, I believe you’ve met kettle before?

“I’ll accept that some portion of the illegals are hard-working, honest family-centered people (because some are) if you’ll accept that some portion are criminals, ne’er-do-wells, and generally nasty people.”

I’d accept that description applies to just about nearly any group in the world. The problem is focusing in on one or the other to the complete exclusion of the remainder and understanding where the proper ratios apply.

I hate to break it to all the less than informed people out there, but this is not just an issue of choosing to be illegal versus being legal. There is virtually no chance for most of these people to ever be here legally. The choice they are left with is illegally or not at all.

The smart policy would be making it infinitely easy and affordable to start the immigration policy so that the incentive to follow legal practices far outweighs the incentives to follow illegal practices. Thus we could easily identify true criminals and dangers to our country.

Joe L, Well, you are making a little bit of sense now. Hopefully you can see that you are characterizing illegals as great people just as much as I’m characterizing them as criminals. Except that I’m the one that’s right. Because they are criminals. And yes, we need immigration reform, and it is ridiculous the hoops you have to go through to get here legally. But we cannot allow everyone in the world who wants to come here come here. And there are people in line to come here legally. They should be rewarded.

As to your statement:

There is virtually no chance for most of these people to ever be here legally. The choice they are left with is illegally or not at all.

Yes, that is true. And the choice they should make is for the latter. And the reason most of these people have virtually no chance is because we don’t really need to import poverty-stricken, uneducated people. It should be merit-based. You need to be educated, have a good skill, or at least be good looking ;) (Okay, that last one is gonna be hard to fly, but I have seen some hot illegal immigrant chicks who I would hate to have to deport—although I would, in order to be consistent and not a hypocrite.)

They aren’t crimes they are violations. Just like a speeding isn’t a crime or breaking a city sound ordinance. We aren’t talking about illegal entry - it doesn’t apply to anyone who enters LEGALLY (which can be done at any border checkpoint) and stays afterwards which is the vast majority of illegal immigrants.

And the fact remains that the “crimes” you are using to label them as criminals would essentially make nearly every American a “criminal”. Have you ever walked across someone’s yard? You trespassed, you are a CRIMINAL!

You know full well that using the term criminal is not analgous to someone who has merely broken a law in connotation. But by slapping the “criminal” tag on the people you minimalize and dehumanize them making it easier to hate and exclude them.

“But we cannot allow everyone in the world who wants to come here come here. And there are people in line to come here legally. They should be rewarded.”

I’m pretty much on the side of letting all comers enter the country through a legal but streamlined and simplified process. If the jobs are opportunities are here we need them, if not they won’t come. If a sane process is put in place the “waiting line” will disappear so quickly this point is completely moot.

“Yes, that is true. And the choice they should make is for the latter.”

Right they should stay in an impoverished condition and watch their children starve and die versus crossing an arbitrary line to do readily available work. Quite a compassionate and reasonable position there. If it was your child I would call you negligent for doing anything different than what most of them are doing.

“And the reason most of these people have virtually no chance is because we don’t really need to import poverty-stricken, uneducated people. It should be merit-based. You need to be educated, have a good skill”

The reason they have no chance is that our immigration policy is bigoted and designed to keep “real Americans” in a better position. It has nothing to do with anything else. The truth is we have a TREMENDOUS need to import unskilled and highly motivated (i.e. undereducated and poverty stricken) people not the opposite. Ah yes, “merit-based”. Of course merits are in the eye of the beholder. I prefer to stay out of laws that are based on subjective judgement.

We don’t have a tremendous need for unskilled labor. Big business and some contractors, etc., have a tremendous desire to keep wages low and not pay for health care, benefits, etc…and that makes it unfair to businesses who don’t want to break the law. But I guess immigrants deserve even MORE rights than Americans in your eyes.

P.S. To DebbieDoRight—I am assuming you are a troll and not a real person being serious, because if you are, you are an unmitigated idiot. I just posted a link and a direct quote from the White House website right shortly before your post. You have an ability to ignore facts when they don’t suit your predetermined view, don’t you.

As Georgia has several years in the past, the state failed to break out of the 10 worst states in the country.

The state’s problems with poverty and education continue to hurt children, the study says. Georgia children continue to be born at unhealthy weights, live in poverty, struggle in school and live in families that do not have secure employment, the study says.

Black infants are twice as likely to be born at a low birth weight than white babies, the report says.

Don’t it feel good to be a Georgia Redneck?

Oh oh Now we have the politically correct members telling us that a crime is not a crime but (in the case of illegals) a …..picnic?…walk in the sun???….sightseeing??…continuing education??…hiking club??…hop scotch over the fence???…family reunion??…Alamo study??

I mean CRIME is a bad offensive word and we must not use it. How about “flagitiousness”? There. Is that better? OK & PC for illegals??

Do we need to just give a brand spanking new pickup truck to every old fart that is pi$$ed off and angry at the world because they never quite achieved what they thought they would after high school? Would that make them happy?

Relax, poor baby. Luckovich’s is open NOW.

So good it bears repeating.

Dusty is THE perfect neo-con.

Screws up the facts or makes up sh-it as he goes along. Gets corrected by someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Doesn’t ever acknowledge the screw up. Blames the person who corrected his screw up or calls them a crier, liar, poor baby, etc.

No wonder neo-cons are just about extinct.

Apparently, Dusty has never committed a crime, but the all the rest of us have.

Entering or staying in this country illegally, in and of itself, is no more serious a crime than hiring illegals to clean your house or work in your yard, driving over the speed limit, illegally downloading music, installing expensive software that you didn’t pay for, or cheating on your tax returns. In short, we’re all illegals.

Yes, technically, illegal immigrants are criminals. But what’s your point? You’re a criminal too.

Get back to us when you’ve turned yourself in for pirating that $300 software installed on your computer, driving 20 miles over the speed limit on the interstate, and for taking tax deductions for “business” lunches with your friends.

None of the neo-cons are come to the defense of Dubya. Are they “disillusioned” with his criminal antics? Instead of cut-and-run, the neo-cons are making a strategic withdrawl, don’t you think?

Jackie, if I was a neo-con (OH my GOD! How could I ever even think something that awful!!!) I would be pretty PO’d at these guys who rode Bush’s coat-tails to victory only to drop him faster than a bad habit when the you-know-what hit the fan.

It’s not as if they fundamentally disagree with much of ANYTHING he has said or done, then or now. But they just don’t want to be caught dead acknowledging it now, as they know the bulk of the American voters are finally sick of them and their hypocrisy, incompetence and corruption.

Honor amongst thieves, my @ss.

Re: Joe L

Make you a deal - I’ll quit walking across my neighbor’s yard if the illegal immigrants will apply for citizenship - on their way back to Mexico. Now, take a deep breath, and quit hating the white man.

Oh , what a surprise! I’m not an illegal alien so I can’t mention their criminality. And the French didn’t take care of me any more than they did yesterday. I’m standing tall. What cha gonna do, liberals? IMPEACH me?? Oh I’m so afraid of these big bad liberals. Oh Oh

Well, nevermind. I’m having dinner in a few minutes and that is much more interesting. Bug off, liberals. Run over to your buddy Luckovich’s place. You still got an hour to find fault with the president, the country and the troops. Hasta la vista!!

The thing about Blank is that he never knew what to do with Vick anyway, so it doesn’t matter if we lose vick.

With Vick, we were a .500 team. Without Vick, we’ll be a .500 team.

Blank needs to sell the Falcons, or buzz off, and let the coach coach.

Because one comes from South of the US border does not necessarily make one an illegal, but by reading these posts, and the stories out of Cobb, that’s what one would assume.

By the way, if it weren’t for the French, we wouldn’t HAVE a country at all.
