Drunk sailors, beauty-shop Edwards’ spending
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Former Arikansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had the line of the night during Tuesday’s second Republican presidential candidate debate. On taxes and spending, Huckabee said that “we’ve had a Congress that’s spent money like John Edwards at a beauty shop.” Funny stuff and the South Carolina audience roared. John McCain compared its spending to that of drunken sailors, which offended drunken sailors, he said. The line was funnier the first time.
A single debate involving 10 candidates would have been unwieldy and not particulary productive. But the field and the format are growing on me. Not love-ins, but not nasty either. And occasional good humor. Little by little, individuals are breaking through and, most usefully, there’s no joker in the deck.
Huckabee had a good evening, embracing the flat tax and vowing to post an “out of business” sign at the Internal Revenue Service. Other candidates, too, had comforting messages for fiscal conservatives. “I am not going to raise taxes,” declared Mitt Romney without equivocation. Even McCain, who opposed the Bush tax cuts because, he said, there was no concomitant agreement to cut spending, vowed to make them permanent.
All of the candidates, even Ron Paul, who narrowed his appeal in the GOP primaries with the allegation that America brought 9/11 on itself by its aggression in Iraq and elsewhere, contribute to making the debates interesting and productive for potential voters.
That particular assertion by Paul offered Rudy Giuliani his best moment. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before and I have heard some pretty absurd explanations.” Surely Giuliani meant he’d never heard it before from Paul. That “it’s our fault” line has been pretty standard fare on the left.
A bit of a Fred Thompson boomlet is developing in Georgia with two of the State Senate’s most substantial conservatives, President Pro Tem Eric Johnson of Savannah, and State Sen. Chip Rogers of Woodstock, lining up for him. He’s not in the race yet. Nor is Newt Gingrich, who plans to wait until September. Neither better wait too much longer. Some of these guys, like Romney and Giuliani, are beginning to hit their stride.

Good morning, Jim,
Fred better get in soon!
On other matters:
Decatur attorney Tom Stubbs has it nailed in his Guest Column in the AJC
In his most recent action to kill the tax cut and un-veto the state’s supplemental budget, Governor Sonny Perdue violated the Georgia State Constitution.
Of course, a trifling thing like the state constitution or even the U.S. Constitution has never stopped politicians, on both sides of the aisle, from displaying just how intellectually deficient the mass of them really are.
Way to go, Sonny, you’re keeping up the family tradition…political family, that is.
There is a bright side. Despite getting an “F” in civics class, Sonny is preventing the losers in the General Assembly from returning to Atlanta to do even more mischief, so there is a little benefit to his ignorance of government.
On stiill another matter, we now learn that Georgie Bush’s Golden Boy, Afonso…excuse me…Alberto Gonzales was involved in antics in the pattern of the Nixon White House, when he tried to hoodwink former Attorney General Ashcroft to sign off on Georgie’s domestic spying program.
And finally, this morning, we learn that the Army wants its soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan to have all their emails, blog entries, and other electronic communications censored by their commanders before being dispatched. H’um….wonder why they are so concerned about information being leaked out all of a sudden?
All I can say is 2009, come quickly!

The REAL punchline is the fact that republicans have been in charge of the Congress during this time. Guess he forgot to mention that.
When all else fails, bring up John Edwards’ hair!
That’s Republican leadership.

Oh, wait. People used Falwell’s blog to do nothing but say he was burning in hell. Couldn’t have that for King, it might upset someone…
Equality? Yeah, right. Not until blacks can get harassed just as much as whites.

Morning, Philosopher, and others to come. I agree with you on the Stubbs piece concerning the unvetoed supplemental budget. I thought a veto was transmitted when it was signed and that information was conveyed, along with reasons, to the General Assembly. A televised veto accompanied by stated reasons for issuing it met the standard, I thought, for transmittal. But obviously others disagree.

Of course the Republicans find Edwards funny, he told the truth about wasting money. It’s far more Republican to lie about expensive things coughmedicaredrugbenefitcough than to let people know you spend like a drunken sailor in John Edward’s beauty salon.
If Edwards wants to spend that much on haircuts, at least he’d save us from looking at this for four years

Well, them good Republican candidates sure give it to the libruls last night. Good except for this Giuliani and Paul. They are nothing but a bunch of libruls. Being in favor of abortion and cutting and running from Iraq and all. And I still don’t want that Mormon guy elected. We need another good Baptist president. Just not Jimmy Carter. So we can keep the death penalty and make sure our women don’t sneak off and get rid of babies. When we get them pregnant they need to stay pregnant.
Anyways, I’m sure in morning about the death of Revrend Falwell. He knowed how to stick it to the libruls and the gays and people that wasn’t Baptists. And poor Newt! Now he won’t have his big coming out thing with being innerduced by the Rev hisself at that college.
I don’t see what the big deal is about Sonny’s veto. Why don’t the boys in the state house just give him a budget with lots of things in it and let Sonny pick and choose which things he wants to keep in there? It would save a lot of work and the legaslature wouldn’t have to meet for 40 days. They could throw in things like Tax Cuts for Big Farmers and Tax Cuts for Old People and More Money for Those People and Tax Refunds for Everybody and Vouchers for Private Schools and stuff and Sonny could go thru the list and check the things he wants to keep and cross out the things he don’t like. Heck, we might not even need a legaslature that way. But then the call girls in Atlanta would go broke and the night clubs too, I guess.
Anyway, the visit of this Gonzales guy to the hospitle to browbeat Ashcroft into approving the spy thing was pretty slick. Almost as slick as old Newt waiting till his wife was dying of cancer in the hospitle before handing her the divorce papers, so she couldn’t do nothing about it. That’s the diffrence between good Republicans and the libruls. The Republicans are smart as a whip and know when the right time is to get things done.
Well, time to get back to the beer run. I’ll check in later to see if Sister Dusty has sobered up and can do some writing today.

whats wrong with a timetable for victory anyway?
every baseball game has one:
9 innings
the other team doesnt just wait for the 10th inning to pounce because by then they’ve lost
when they say they can’t win on a timetable, they just flat mean they can’t win.
if you cant win in 9 innings, you cant win.

Regarding Republican candidates who aspire to be the next president, Mr. Wooten writes, “…there’s no joker in the deck.”
Really?
It’s “go along, get along” statements like this, intended to brainwash the American people how nice and pure the candidates are and aren’t we glad that we have such “honest” politicians, that give journalism and the mainstream media the “bad press” that it has.
Why are you journalist so afraid to tell it like it is? The terms “journalism” and “journalist” have become synonomous with the contradictory term “business ethics”.
So much for the mainstream media.
Every damned one of them is a joker, Mr. Wooten, every damned one.
And we’ve yet to see if the democrats will do any better.

As a Democrat I must say I love every single one of the Republicans running for President. We can beat them all! What a lousy bunch! I don’t see how they reconcile a party who has done nothing for years except rant about the sanctity of marriage and the sanctity of the unborn with candidates who have been divorced (McCain, Thompson) and some divorced several times (Guiliani) and those who are for protecting a woman’s right to choose (Guiliani) and those who are out of step with not only their party but with the opposition and independants (McCain). As far as Brownback and the others go, I say no one knows who they are or cares about them except die-hard Republicans. You have to have some name/face recognition these days and they have none! As for Romney, well I know the Republicans hate flip floppers and he is the flippingest flopper that ever did flip flop! Good luck, suckers!

Publicly and openly, ask their ancestors for forgiveness. Our great forefathers wanted to be free not integrated, enslaved.

The joke about Edwards’ hair shows two things: 1) there is no substance in this whole bunch and 2) they are once again hoping that some idiot Americans will vote for them because they seem like they would be fun to have a beer with. That is why Bush won right? He seems like he would be a great guy to hang around with. How many times did I hear that line? Look where it got us! I hope they keep cracking jokes. It will hopefully remind Americans what serious problems we have right now and how seriously the GOP takes them.

It is a shame. The republican field of angry old men/losers is almost pitiful. Huckabee is a joke..he was forced to raise taxes by a court order in Arkansas! Being from Arkansas, I could not believe that a state sharing the poorest region in the country could get much worse. I mean come on, Wal-mart, JB Hunt, Tyson Food, Dillards (red neck Macy’s) can’t generate revenue and interest in the state? Then he put a damn trailer on the capital front lawn while it was being renovated. Trash!

The biggest joke of last night’s debate was the presentation of the Fair Tax as the solution to all our tax problems. It was a “bend over, little guy, you won’t feel a thing for now” kind of moment. Instead of dealing with the big, bad IRS, we will have the pleasant alternative of paying 33% more for a loaf of break or a gallon of milk. Wage earners who must spend all they make on necessities will have the opportunity to pay tax on 100% of their earnings, while fat cats with huge investments and salaries escape with paying tax on at most a third of their earnings.
After watching those pandering clowns last night, I feel much more optimistic about the 2008 election. If the best they can do is tell a raped woman she must bear her unwanted child because of the “sanctity of life”; if dealing with terrorism is merely a matter of using torture; and if putting up a hugely (still unfunded) expensive fence along our border with Mexico is the solution to the illegal immigration problem, then even the most gullible voter will hardly be fooled into voting for any of them.
The Democrats could put Gomer Pyle up for president and still win.

While Governor Huckabee’s jab at Senator Edwards was indeed funny, it would have been nice if he had used the small amount of time he had at last night’s debate to actaully debate his Republican opponents on issues that are important to Americans (Republican and Democrat)instead of making silly jokes. Frankly, I don’t think anyone - other than Republican presidential candidates - cares how much Mr. Edwards pays to have his hair cut.

So, did anything happen in this “debate” last night besides a lame haircut joke? Because I have yet to hear anything of substance…I would like to hear all of the candidates state their positions on whether or not the president should have the power to indefinitely detain anyone he (or she) declares to be an “terrorist threat” (or whatever the nomenclature is). Or, perhaps some definitive statement on what they believe constitutes torture, and whether they condone its use. Or, how they intend on restoring some manner of competence and, you know, actual managerial ability (not to mention ethics) at the top levels of the federal government. If the best the R’s can do is a haircut joke (which will soon head into “where’s the beef?” territory), then the elephant party going to be in for a long and distressing campaign season.

The fair tax sounds like voodoo economics version 2.0. Unless, expenses are cut, the government will still have the same obligations, regardless of what means they use to raise revenue. If someone pays less in taxes under the fair tax, someone else will end up paying more. Unless of course, you want to borrow the money and pass the bill on to future generations.

Face it, McCain sold his soul to the devil when he aligned himself with W. Now everyone in his party wants to distance themselves from Bush and he cannot. This is his biggest liability. If you like Bush and you want more of the same then nominate McCain. Bush’s approval rating is below 30% and that’s about where can expect McCain’s vote appeal to be. Guiliani has loads of problems that so far his party has given him a pass on. He is no poster child for terror readiness or prevention. He was running a city that was attacked by Bin Laden’s forces in the 90’s and he did not follow any recommendations resulting that attack. He was told years before 9/11 to move his command post out of the World Trade Center and he did not. He was walking the streets that dark day because his darn office had been blown up folks! You think he would be good at the helm of this whole country where terrorism is concerned? Forget it! Also, fire fighters hate his guts because he sent all those emergency workers into ground zero knowing the air quality was poisonous and now those guys are dying young from all sorts of lung disorders as a result. That is not to mention all the trouble with his many wives. His first wife was his second cousin and he had to get special permission from the church to marry a relative (actually, that may play pretty well amongst southern redneck Republicans). He cheated on his second wife and broke up with her in a press conferance and then moved out of Gracie Mansion because the people of New York would not allow him to move his mistress in. I heard it time and time again when Clinton was in office and I will use your own words here: IF HIS WIFE CAN’T TRUST HIM, HOW CAN AMERICA TRUST HIM? Your standards, people, your words. Death to Charles,
In regard to “extending the same kind of eschatological ‘logic’ that holdingitstinydickthusmakingitaccountable uses about Falwell”:
Are you sharing with us your personal biography, (secretly angry at such an unjust and unmerciful god, but yet fearful of his wrath?) or merely trying to impress us with some intimate knowledge of the late Reverend’s “attributes” based on perhaps “fellowshiping” with him in a men’s stall at the airport terminal?
Otherwise, I don’t get your point. And it’s sad to say that the level of discourse on this blog has sunk to this level, a level that is only ever so slightly above what we’ve seen in the GOP debates.

Hey Glad Another King is Dead, write another one. You are hilarious! You are one of those guys who thinks every woman who turns you down or doesn’t like you in any way is a lesbian. How pathetic! Did it ever occur to you that you are disliked because you are a butthole? ‘Cause you are! However, you are very stupid and highly entertaining one. Obviously I pushed some of your buttons. Paris Hilton most likely spends $400 of HER own money on a haircut & blow dry too. Where’s the outrage? On the contrary, Mr. Wooten and the other “conservatives” think Ms. Hilton pays too much in taxes. MAKE PARIS HILTON’S TAX CUTS PERMANENT! Afterall, she spend buckets of dough on clothes and shoes — all made in America, right? — to stimulate our sagging manufacturing industries and employ honest, non-complaining, blue-collar American workers. HAHAHA!

Oh my, I missed the Republican Debate. Until the crowd thins out a bit, I can’t get real interested.
Sounds like the haircut joke was the biggest hit. That is a bit stale though, since even Clinton got a $400 haircut.
I am going to suggest Fantastic Sams to the candidates. Sams gives haircuts for less than $400. Then the candidates and the listeners would have something else to talk about. Something like, let us “Let us support the troops and their Commander-in-Chief”.

Republicans your marketing plan and attention diverting are a little too obvious. Your 08 election plan is easy to figure out…….
Don’t talk about “Contract for America,” type issues. Kinda dropped the ball there.
Please don’t even dare mention “Family Values.” (Republicans have issued themselves a ‘Family Values’ waiver this year.)
The party of “fiscal responsibility.”….Don’t even go there.
Those are all old and outdated marketing tools of elections past.
No, no, no.
Republicans will soon start referring to all future tax cuts as “Super Cuts.”
Oh, and the Iraq war will become “Just a really bad hair day.”
Republican candidates will emphasize the fact that the media is not showing any of the good haircuts being given in Baghdad. (All under $400.)
They will propose a “Medicare Part H” haircut plan. Seniors need affordable haircare.
Propose a 10 billion dollar cosmetology scholarship. (The NASCAR mom will love this.)
Propose a constitutional amendment that outlaws gay hair stylists. Guilliani will be allowed to present a “don’t ask don’t tell” compromise.)
Endorse Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue’s “Wigs for Fish” program.
Its the haircut stupid.

By Perdue's a moron
May 16, 2007 12:22 PM | Link to this
Gov. Sonny Perdue has suggested that Americans concerned about the course of the war in Iraq ought to be quiet about it.
“We have everyone that wants to talk about what’s gone wrong, but we have very few solutions coming out of this nation, and Washington there,” Perdue told a radio talk show audience last week. “Until you’ve got a better idea, keep your mouth shut.”
But this is no time to remain silent. That’s not how things are done in a democracy; that’s not how decisions are reached. Perdue’s suggestion of a collective gag order betrays a deep discomfort with the unruly process of self-governance in this country.
The governor is, of course, entitled to his own opinion about whether our nation should have invaded Iraq; like most of us, he probably has some strong opinions about whether the sacrifice we’re paying in blood and treasure can be justified by what has happened, and he has the right to express those opinions.
In fact, he did so.
“This president did not choose war,” Perdue claimed. “He chose to protect the United States of America, and I’m thankful that he did.”
Others, of course, would disagree with the governor, pointing out that the president did indeed choose war against Iraq, a nation with no ties to the attacks of Sept. 11 and few if any ties to international terrorism in general. And that’s precisely the kind of rebuttal that Perdue apparently doesn’t want to hear.
He’s right about one thing, though. “Better ideas” about Iraq are indeed in short supply. Having made a series of very bad choices — and having stifled open debate about those choices for too long — we now have no good choices remaining. Every road still open to us is ugly and dangerous, leading to destinations that do not look promising.
Perdue does at least practice what he preaches. After five years in office, the governor has yet to articulate a coherent vision for the biggest challenges facing Georgia, such as improving the state’s dysfunctional transportation system. He has also been notably zip-lipped about the recent state budget fiasco, in which he at times played a critical role by playing no role whatsoever.
Now, hard as it is to believe, Perdue is being mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate in 2008, which would certainly test his speak-no-evil approach to governing.
In that role, Perdue would be forced to explain to increasingly anxious voters how to “win” this war, if that’s still remotely possible. Voters are no longer going to be placated with insistence that victory is our goal; they have every right to ask their leaders what that victory would look like, and how it might be achieved.
If Perdue can’t provide such answers, he ought to be boning up on the details of how and when our overtaxed troops will be withdrawn safely. Either way, our taciturn governor is mistaken if he believes problems will disappear or get better just because we stop talking about them.
It has never worked that way, and it never will.

As ever the hypocritical liberals on here post endless abuse about any/all conservatives, most recently about the death of Dr. Falwell, including openly gloating about this sad event. They always resort to the usual ultra hypocritical homo themed abuse and get all shrewish and screechy when any abuse is wittily handed back to them. Liberals are despicable dissemblers. Mirroring back their leftist hate is great fun. Watching them now gutlessly attempt to ban those who simply mirror back their vitupertaive abuse is typical of their abject cowardice.
As for the disgusting, deranged liberal lies about multi-ids … until very very recently I only ever posted under time for the truth. Yet liberals on here STILL continuously steal ids, namejack ids use endless different ids to hide behind etc - just more leftist hypocrisy.

Instead of talking about $400 haircuts, they should have talked about the fact that we have lost 49 US Soldiers in the first 14 days of May. Not to mention 3 more missing.
Think about it. We have 49 families and their extended families who are devastated, not to mention the kids who have lost their fathers.
A soldier from Tennessee killed last Saturday had two sons, ages 12 & 16 and a daughter age 14. You think they will miss him when they go to their prom? Or on their high school graduation day? He should have already been home, but his tour was “extended.”
And let’s not forget about the 19 year old girl (I know officially she is a women, but to me she is a girl) who died 2 weeks ago. She was going through her high school graduation less than 2 years ago.
But let’s all laugh at John Edwards because he paid $400 for a haircut. Especially when we have a sitting president who has lived such a privileged life.
We have Wooten yucking it up (he thought it was “funny stuff”) and people like Dusty who accuse others of being unpatriotic because they do not fully support Bush’s war.
They are truly a pathetic, smug, arrogant bunch. I can’t state that strong enough.

Where’s The Equity, you are comparing apples and oranges. Yolanda King did not affect public policy, and she was not a public figure. Most people probably didn’t know who she was. She moved to California to not be in a fish bowl as one of Dr. King’s children. Perhaps if you mentioned Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton - they are fair game.

Jim; You probably know this but McDermott is in favor of the FAIRTAX not the Flat Tax. There is a tremendous difference.
The FairTax eliminates the IncomeTax, Eliminates withholdings for Medicare, Social Security; eliminates death taxes, eliminates capital gains taxes and greatly reduces the role of the IRS by replacing taxation based on income with a flat rate tax on consumption.
This removes embedded tax costs from the cost of everything produced in this country and places all of our US Goods on a more favorable playing field against foreign produced goods.
The “FLAT TAX” is still a tax on production which is a financial disadvantage to businesses and drives factories overseas.
We need to stop punishing productivity; Productivity is GOOD for the economy. Shifting taxation to consumption encourages savings, encourages investing and encourages productive behaviour which benefits us all.

Good afternoon all,
Having watched the debate last night, I agree with some of today’s posters that a winnowing of the field would be helpful. Having 10 people on stage for an hour is an inefficient use of time (this is a debate, not a play).
Further, given the format rules, each party had roughly 4 1/2 minutes of time to speak, which is barely enough to introduce yourself, much less intelligently argue the issues of the day.
As someone who has historically voted for democrats (except for Bush I back in ‘88), I think that McCain/Romney/Guiliani create a field representative of how the GOP sees itself, and Huckabee & Co. are representative of how the GOP really is. Hopefully, voters will set their sights higher come primary season.
I must admit, however, that given the comparative strength of the dem candidates, I think the GOP has a long way to go before it persuades a majority of the electoral college that their party should be returned to the White House. Which is why it’s good they’re starting early. This debate would have been disastrous for the GOP had it been held, say, next January.
I did, however, enjoy the “party of Lincoln” references during the post-debate coverage. First, mentioning that in a room full of South Carolina GOPers who were, both literally and figuratively, not too far from Fort Sumter was gloriously ironic.
Second, it would be nice if GOPers stopped saying they were in the “party of Lincoln” (they’re not, the party is fundamentally different today, and they all know that), and started acting in a way that would have made Lincoln proud. We know from the record that today’s GOP wouldn’t even come close.
Charles,
We know you’re either 1) just trying to get a rise out of the forum, or 2) sincere in your beliefs but suffering from some form of dementia rendering your thoughts as incoherent and, shall we say, “gramatically challenged.”
Either way, you’re not taken seriously. The best way to change that is to stay on topic.
Dusty,
I’m at a bit of a loss here. Two well-regarded field generals with experience in the middle eastern theater criticize policy, and you call them “twinkle-toes”
Yet aren’t you generally criticizing folks when they argue against Iraqi military policy that we should just support the troops. Last I checked, they used to be soldiers, who seemed to know a few things about how to conduct operations.
I do agree, however, that their 30+ years of service as distinguished career officers doesn’t even begin to match how cool it was when Bush landed on that carrier and pronounced “mission accomplished.” (heh, heh)

The following post is what decent non-bigoted black Americans should do.
Publicly and openly, ask their ancestors for forgiveness. Our great forefathers wanted to be free not integrated, enslaved.
Publicly and openly, ask African American children for forgiveness. We have led them to a path of destruction and lunacy via integration.
An evil spirit influenced African American integrationist leadership, grandparents, and great-grandparents to blame their children for the present horrific condition caused by integration.
Their first attempt was to blame slavery and Willie Lynch for the present crisis. That attempt failed. White people were not buying that line.
Their second attempt was to fault their own children. White people liked that line of personal responsibility; the secret.
Publicly and openly, ask God for forgiveness. God is merciful and full of Mercy. “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

When Clinton was president, he appointed Ann Brown to chair the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which is responsible for reviewing thousands of consumer products to see which, if any, pose a health risk and might need to be recalled. Brown had spent 20 years as a consumer advocate and served as vice president of the Consumer Federation of America, so she was a logical choice, who ended up doing a fine job on behalf of American consumers. This is how a functional administration works — find capable, competent people to fill government posts, and the public will be well served.
Then Bush was elected. First, he tapped Hal Stratton for the post as a reward for his work on Lawyers for Bush during the 2000 campaign. His tenure was something of a joke. Upon Stratton’s resignation, Bush tapped picked another hack to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission: National Association of Manufacturers lobbyist Michael Baroody, who incidentally, has called for weakening the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Baroody, a senior lobbyist at the National Association of Manufacturers nominated by President Bush to lead the Consumer Product Safety Commission will receive a $150,000 departing payment from the association when he takes his new government job, which involves enforcing consumer laws against members of the association. Baroody recently wrote to the commission’s general counsel that the payment would not prevent him from considering matters involving individual companies that are members of the manufacturers’ association, many of whom are defendants in agency proceedings over defective products or have other business before the commission.
No, of course not. Who could ever think such a thing?
For all the talk about the Bush White House improving its attitude and learning its lessons, these clowns are just incapable of change. The hackery isn’t just obvious; it’s comical. For the president to send Baroody to the Senate for confirmation is Bush’s way of saying, “I’m shameless and I don’t care.”
Of course, given recent history, the president will simply wait for the Senate to take a day off to honor a holiday and then given Baroody a recess appointment.

Speaking of Jerry Falwell, in early 2003, literally just a few weeks before the president would launch a war with Iraq, Bush met with TV preacher Pat Robertson to discuss the conflict. The president reportedly told the televangelist that he believed there’d be minimal casualties, and soon after, began the invasion.
With this background in mind, I was not at all encouraged to see that Bush is now discussing Iran with James Dobson. Oh my. I guess it’s too much to ask, but how about some scrutiny on the White House over the fact that the president is meeting with a nut like Dobson to discuss foreign policy?

Here’s another funny joke on the part of our congressional leadership - seal the border. bwaaahhhh!!
SAN DIEGO — The face- and fingerprint-matching technology that has been touted over the past decade as a sophisticated new way to stop terrorists and illegal immigrants from entering the country through Mexico has one major drawback: U.S. border inspectors almost never use it.
In fact, the necessary equipment is not even installed in vehicle lanes along the border.
Government officials told the Associated Press that checking more people would create too big a backup at the border, where hours-long traffic jams are already common.

20 Months,
It pains me to interrupt my grieving over the dearly departed Rev Falwell, but I shall take a few moments from my prayer vigil (in which I beseech our Lord to smite the Islamohomoliberals for their apostasy and Satan fornication) to answer your childish attack on Our Leader.
You imply that there is something improper about the Godly Mr Baroody’s nomination to the Consumer Product Safety Commission because of his vast experience in Manufacturing. This shows your ignorance and leftbedwetting bias.
Who better to police the manufacturers than someone who has long experience in that field. You would rather have someone who knows nothing about the activity trying to oversee it? Why, that would be like putting a disgraced horse lawyer in charge of disaster relief management!!! No, it is because of Mr Baroody’s long association with the very people who create and sell dangerous products that he is the perfect man for the job.
He has already said, quite publicly, that he intends to be impartial. That’s good enough for me. Plus, he has lots of friends who are under his jurisdiction. All he will need to do is pick up the phone and say, “Hey, Bill. Is that product dangerous?” And Bill will be able to answer honestly, thereby saving lots of unnecessary expense on “investigations” and “evidence”. It’s win-win all the way around.
It is really one of the genius ideas of the Right Thinking movement. We put people will relevant experience in charge of agencies that oversee their old business realms. The Dumbocrats think that an “independent” overseer is better, but what the hell does an environmentalist know about developing oil fields or nuclear power?? Nothing, that’s how much. It would be like putting Dusty in charge of the Department of Logical Thinking. Ridiculous, or some real estate shyster in charge of the Justice Department.
But it is typical of you liberal San francisco pantywaists to be suspiscious of Our Leader and his Loyal Minions. When have they ever lied?
Now, back to my prayers that every person who is not praying for the Rev Falwell shall be consumed by a never-ending lake of fire. That ought to clean this board up quite nicely.

Keith,
Prices are based on supply and demand, not “embedded taxes”. A business doesn’t lower prices just because it can (look at the oil companies) or, though they’d like to, raise prices to cover their expenses if it means losing revenue (look at Delta when they had to operate in the red to keep customers). Prices are established in the Marketing Department, not the Accounting Department.
Take a basic economics class. Then, read a book on marketing. You’ll find that you’ve been conned.

If we were not so obsessed with race in this city these blogs would probably have sixty percent less posted comments. When are we Southerners - both black and white- going to cast off this ridiculous race obsessed shackle? As an international city we must appear to the rest of the world perpetually stuck in a time warp.

deegee @3:45,
You can disagree with me but lay off my impatiens. They were already looking wilted before I brought them in. Now they have started to perk up. So much for horticulture news.
RedNeck,
You are so lowdown dirty “cute” on rare occasions, that you almost passed a compliment. Of course, it was really something else, that stuff liberals are so good at passing, even undercover ones like you.
But let us not get “earthy” here. Put down your Bud lite and head for Wednesday night prayer meeting. You need it.

Hey yall, Luc here.
I got this guy named Fallwell down here that I’m trying to do some reference checks on. Says he was a preacher or something. (Yeah I found it pretty funny myself).
I’m trying to decide whether to put him to work in the pit, or use him as a gate guard, or maybe I’ll just let him be my hound groomer. He’s kinda having a hard time with the heat down here, he’s a real fat @ss you know. But I’ll tell you what he sure seems to be a slick talker, and I can see he has that “it” quality about him and just might grow into somebody special in my camp.
Anyone with info. can reach me at 404.555.HELL
Thanks
P.S. Oh yeah, I got word that a you guys might be sending me a guy with some serious heart problems real soon. I can’t really use a guy like that, but then again I might be able to find a spot for him on my light duty detail.
Thx again. Luc

Thanks to Dusty for pointing out, heh, that I, your President, Feel Deeply for each and every one of our fallen heroes.
As my lovely wife Laura pointed out recently to that reporter from Today:
“Oh, I know that, very much. And believe me, no one suffers more than their president and I do when we watch this.”
It’s true. Nobody suffers more than me or Laura when it comes to Iraq. Not even that 19 year old girl who died last week. Because she’s dead, but I have to live with that. So if you think I’m not suffering worse than everyone else, well, I just don’t know why you can’t support the troops that way. Because I suffer. It’s the reason I squint so hard when I pray, and it’s the reason poor Laura chain smokes and washes her Xanax down with a Bloody Mary at breakfast every morning.
But hey, that’s my job, heh, and I’m not complaining. Because I’m the Decider, and the Commander Guy, but hey, heh, everybody hurts. Just me more than everyone else.

Oh, now it’s not enough to be a general, you have to be a general who only served under Republicans. Yeah, Clinton just picked ‘em up from ROTC and made them generals.
Really, you armchair generals ought to show a little respect for your peers, even if they only got appointed by Clinton. I realize appointing your own self to such a post via blogging is far more proof of understanding a military situation.

Class is back in session. This is the composition of any group of people; ten percent of the people love their own people. Ten percent of people hate their own people. Eighty percent of the masses will follow whoever is in leadership, power, the lovers or the haters.
The ten percent of African American integrationist haters have been elevated over the masses of African Americans. Ten percent of the white haters have been put in power over the masses of white people.

jbmlaw, Generals are appointed? I thought they worked their hineys off in the military for a number of decades, with dedication and commitment to excellence, sacrificing all personal happiness for the good of their country and their branch of service. Are you saying that the military does not adhere to work ethic in its promotional policies? Why do you hate the troops?

I’ll tell you right wing so called conservative neocon crackers right now that one of your leaders is in hell where he deserves to be. There is nothing conservative about teaching someone to work for a living. Satan hiself couldn’t have axed for a better companion. Dear Moonbats, you prove your own cultish nature. The leftist ex-generals who rose to their positions under one who loathed the military are magnified, not because of the logic of what they say, but only because of who they were. Note the contrast with the right, where we come to admire people only because of what they say. The opposite of a cult, a logic-based respect.

I am giving you this information free of charge. I have freely received it, and I’m freely giving, no charge.
There are only about six independent thinkers on planet earth. These people need no stimulus to make them think. They force others to think.
If God should send one of these independent unique thinkers to African Americans, they would destroy him or her themselves.

Actually the correct form is:
“FairTax” as all one word with the T capitalized.
The opponent du jour of the FairTax claims to be the expert on economics but fails the test. Supply and demand ARE factors in pricing, as is the cost to produce the item or service for sale. Hardly makes any sense to continue to produce anything that costs more than the eventual sale price.
Oil prices, as the opponent du jour, correctly stated do not come down as the cost for a barrel of oil declines but the difference in the economy in general and the oil market is the absence of competition in the oil industry. An oligopoly if you will.
In a market with unlimited numbers of suppliers a reduction in the cost to produce for the suppliers gives them the opportunity to increase sales by lowering the price. A 22% decrease in the costs (the imbedded taxes) allows for a similar decrease in the sales price. If all suppliers do not follow suit then the lower price will help eliminate competition from those with higher prices.
Was it JP Morgan who said, “It is easier to make $1 a million times than to make a million dollars once”?
At any rate a bigger market share provides the opportunity to increase profits while selling at a lower price.
Supply and demand indeed! The “expert du jour” needs a refresher course and almost anything would be better than the current tax code.
I am a CPA who earns his living preparing tax returns and I approved this message.

Folks, Dr.Ron Paul is NOT a liberal nor a Libertarian but (as myself) a paleo-Conservative Constitutionalist. Also, he has lead most on-line polls following BOTH debates! Congressman Paul was viciously attacked by NeoCON propaganda arm Faux News mouthpieces like Pawn Vanity. Dr.Paul has a proven record of vehemently upholding the Constitution and limiting/decreasing the size and power of governement (the opposite of what the NeoCONs do). As far as “RINO” Rudy, he is indeed a proven liberal who’s made millions parlaying the 9/11 tragedy into profit for himself! I suggest folks do their homework on the voting record & platform of Ron Paul and see he’s the Constitution’s strongest supporter (on Crapitol sHill), the taxpayer’s best friend…a REAL conservative!!!

Great point wakeupamerica. We are aggressively educating young African Americans. Although, they believe Mexicans can make up for the loss of our vote. We will be supporting Congressman Ron Paul too.
I hope the larger society is shaken from their sleep before it’s too late.
