Delta’s CEO; Dem’s political PeachCare ploy

Thinking Right for this week:

• Amazing how much Delta’s CEO Gerald Grinstein has done right — topping it off with an exit plan from bankruptcy and from the company. No stock, no cash for him and anything he might have gotten will fund hardship and education grants for Delta workers, who get cash and stock for hanging with the company through tough times. Some things are more important than money. Class is one. And Grinstein’s got it.

• Anybody inclined to think Republicans are hard-hearted should have heard state Rep. Larry O’Neal of Warner Robins pitch the House in support of $1.2 million in reparations to Robert Clark, who spent 23 years or “8,393 nights in prison” for a rape he did not commit. The resolution passed, 132-25. O’Neal’s sorrow sounded genuine, as was the admiration he expressed for Clark’s “demeanor and attitude” in the face of a wrong.

• Headline: “High court considers student rights.” That would be going to school, behaving and minding the adults. It would not be unfurling a “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” banner at a school-sanctioned event, in this case an Olympic Torch Relay in Juneau, Alaska. The principal took action; litigation ensued.

• Does anybody think handing over Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will satisfy the sharks? Of course not. The Dems’ Washington, D.C., game is to destroy the administration, not to find truth. It’s politics by subpoena. Fire the crooks, stand by the besieged.

• The state House is extending the Jekyll Island Authority’s lease over the island another 50 years, from 2049 to 2099. Any single parcel, residential or commercial, extended beyond 2049 should be extended at market rates. Why would the state wish to give away public property of considerable value — which is what it could be tempted to do in extending individual property leases on Jekyll Island beyond their scheduled 2049 expiration? A 50-year lease on any parcel there has to be golden.

• As pictured in the AJC, the Atlanta Presbyterians for Peace and Justice marching in Washington, D.C., against the war, look old. Maybe to reciprocate appreciatively, the 20-somethings should march to protest food at the nursing home.

• ‘Tis a mystery to me how run-of-the-mill soil and water conservation district supervisors became “erosion watchdogs” at the center of a dispute over whether they should be appointed or elected. Only nine of 174 up for election last year were contested; in 27, nobody qualified. So appoint. Avoid ballot clutter.

• Rep. Mark Hatfield (R-Waycross) is among that wave of solid young conservatives beginning to surface in the state House and Senate. He objected to and voted against a bill that would ban the sale of marijuana-flavored candy to children. Who could oppose that? A good conservative who recognizes that “taste” is not a standard judges can, or should try, to employ in deciding what’s legal.

• Sorry, but payday lending is not a Republican or a conservative issue. Doesn’t reduce the size of government, promote personal responsibility, strengthen the family or reduce taxes.

• Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco, whose indecisiveness walloped her state during the Katrina disaster, won’t seek re-election this fall. U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal, a Republican who represents southeastern Louisiana in Congress, would be a good replacement. Actually, it is selfless of Blanco to step aside and give her party a chance to hold the governor’s mansion.

• The manufacturer who produces 95 different brands of pet food confirms it: Price sells dog food to me.

• The supplemental budget, the source of the spat between the state House and the Senate, should be a supplemental — for adjusting sums in the current budget to reflect student enrollment increases and the like, not for introducing new spending and pork. The GOP needs to remember what they objected to when they were in the minority. And not take ownership.

• Cynical. How else to describe a U.S. House that adds money for veterans and children’s medical care (PeachCare) to a $100 billion funding bill for troops in Iraq, to which they’ve attached a surrender-and-go timetable. Some $20 billion in domestic spending is added to buy votes and to give Democrats political fodder when the president vetoes this bill, as he must. Cynicism reigns in the district.

• Metro Atlanta has 5 million people, up a million in less than six years. No more relocation permits should be issued until the region adds road capacity — especially permits to people who insist on calling Coca-Cola and other soft drinks “sodas.” Learn the language. Or speak Spanish.

Good morning all. Dan Heninger quotes a funny moment from the Bong Hits case: Here is Chief Justice Roberts Monday on applying the First Amendment in Juneau: “You think the law was so clearly established when this happened that the principal, that the instant that the banner was unfurled, snowballs are flying around, the torch is coming, should have said oh, I remember under Tinker I can only take the sign down if it’s disruptive. But then under Fraser I can do something if it interferes with the basic mission, and under Kuhlmeier I’ve got this other thing. So she should have known …” The lawyer for “Bong” replied that the principal took a course in school law and so had studied Kuhlmeier, Fraser and Tinker. Chief Justice Roberts replied: “So it should be perfectly clear to her exactly what she could and couldn’t do.” The lawyer: “Yes.” Justice Scalia: “As it is to us, right?” (Laughter in the court.) http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/dhenninger/?id=110009817

I am a new fan of Mark Hatfield, thanks for telling us about his vote – my kind of guy. Same reasoning with payday lending – so long as there is honesty in fact and no deception, this is not a government issue.

It’s outside my jurisdiction, but the things I’ve read on Jindal make him sound like the sort of guy we need here in Georgia.

On the pet food thing, this morning’s email included a note from PetSmart, advising me that I had bought some of the potentially poisoned food, and the notice provided a helpful link. Pretty good form and I respect PetSmart for the effort, except the link did not work. So I frantically did some searching, found out it was three small cans of cat food we bought that are on the list (we have four dogs, three of which are big, and a single tiny cat.) The cat never eats the cat food; in our weird ritual, we pour the dog food gravy over the cat’s food, the cat licks the gravy, then Mrs. jbmlaw puts the uneaten cat food outside to feed the neighborhood strays, including a local opossum. We must have cleaned out the neighborhood.

Typical democrats – need to spend $100 billion on the military, so they add 20% for political pork.

On people who do not speak the language, if they call it a “hose” and omit the “pipe,” clearly they do not belong here.

Good morning, Jim,

I cannot help but muse as to just how much the Bush Administration is bent upon its own flagellation. Of course, the Democrats are hell-bent upon assaulting the President on any of his shortcomings…real or otherwise. The problem is that the President seems to be presiding over an administration that is not the least bit shy in providing fodder for the liberal cannons.

This U.S. attorney firing episode is so insignificant in the whole scheme of things, yet due to the mishandling and initial lack of candor, the administration has managed to give the liberals a issue that they can attack.

There have been some really good people in the President’s White House…Margaret Spellings, Lynn Hughes, and Tony Snow, Colin Powell, and Condoleezza Rice…to cite a few. But, balance those against the negatives…John Ashcroft, Donald Rumsfeld, Rod Paige, and *Alphonso)..(excuse me)..Alberto Gonzales, and the President’s judgment in selecting quality is only 50% at most.

Oh, well, with the Democrats in power, it is just a matter of time before the two of us will be subpoenaed before the Select Committee on Pundit Pontifications. We could tell them a thing or two, I suspect.

Gerald Grinstein sets a terrific example for business. His work was absolutely crucial to Delta’s survival. However, unlike many high-level managers, Grinstein recognizes that he didn’t do it alone. He knows that hundreds of Delta employees, who he’ll never meet personally, labored at their desks late at night and on weekends to save the company. He knows that the customer service staff, baggage handlers, flight attendants, mechanics, pilots, computer programmers, financial analysts, accounting clerks and many others sacrificed income, benefits and job security to stay with the company and help nurse it back to health. He recognizes that all who shared in the sacrifice should share in the reward.

I’m looking forward to the day when we stop allowing corporations to reward the Jack Welches and Bob Nardellis of the world with raises and bonuses that should rightfully be shared with the rest of their companies’ employees and/or plowed back into the company for the benefit of shareholders.

Hi Jim,

I was at the Civic Leauge forum on transportation Wednesday night, but didn’t see you there.

Some of the professionals in the crowd did an excellent job of explaining why Atlanta will only see marginal improvements in road quality and capacity in the next ten years. I think you could’ve learned a thing or three if you had participated.

We have much to be concerned about…I’ll be letting you know how my home purchase near a Marta station pans out over that time period.

Oh…I keep forgetting to go back and look at your coverage of the Clinton impeachment hearings and preceeding “Arkansas Project”. I’m quite certain that given your abiltiy to soberly assess a political situation that you surmised the same things back then as you do now (re the Gonzalez scrape): politically driven head hunting.

What goes around comes around, or something like that. Huh.

Payday lending certainly should be a Republican and conservative issue. It is a classic example of the fallacy of using the law to attempt to solve alleged social problems — problems which do not involve the use of force or fraud by anyone against anyone else.

Essentially, the argument for prohibiting payday lending amounts to this: since some individuals make bad decisions and take on a certain type of loan they cannot repay, no indivduals should be allowed to take on that kind of loan.

Thus everyone’s freedom is infringed solely because some people make bad choices. Of course, nothing whatsoever justifies the notion of punishing some people for the actions of other people — punishing someone for what they did not do is the very essence of injustice.

This notion of limiting the freedom of all because of the actions of a few is the source of a vast amount of wholly unjustified government regulation. If Republicans and conservatives are in favor of limited government at all, then this is precisely the sort of governmental excess they should oppose.

The decision on what to pay the employees of a company, including the CEO, rests solely with the owners of that company — which means, in the case of a public corporation, the shareholders. If you don’t like the decisions made by a particular company, don’t work there or invest in their stock.

But what should “rightfully be shared” is their decision, not yours or anyone else’s.

Gee whiz - Mr. Wooten, you look old. Easy to understand why you would want to get the 20 year olds to protest food at a nursing home. Might just be your next favorite dining place? Criticize the old, belitte the young, and disparage nursing homes. Is this really the heart and soul of a man who grew up in South Georgia. Gerald Grinstein is in his 70’s and I suspect after selling Western Airlines to Delta way back when for a boatload of money, more money is not something he was after - but a lasting legacy. Bernie Marcus built us a beautiful aquarium, and Gerry Grinstein saved one of our true corporate jewels and tens of thousands of families from financial hardship - I salute both of these men. I would have added Arthur Blank, but gee whiz the Falcons have only added to my misery the last two years.

Nice parting shot on the “carpetbaggers” moving here. I just landed a new job with an international corporation here in Atlanta - and at the interview when I told them I was born “here”, they told me I may actually be able to apply for minority status!

Michael Smith,

With regard to public companies, you’re absolutely correct that shareholders should be the decision makers on compensation — primarily, I would suggest, by having the opportunity to establish compensation guidelines to be implemented and enforced by the Boards. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.

However, if you’re arguing that we, citizens with Constitutional rights, don’t have authority over corporations, legislative entities, then you’re mistaken. For example, we have the right, via our representatives, to specify whether certain expenses are legitimate business expenses for tax purposes. I, as a voter, would argue that certain portions of raises, bonuses, stock options, loans, benefits, and pensions (i.e. gifts) to upper management are not legitimate business expenses, and therefore, should not be tax deductible. If the stockholders want to continue allowing their companies to provide such gifts, they could do so — but, without the benefit of shifting the tax burden to the rest of us.

Excellent point Henry! (See Jim, I asked you to put Nichols on the agenda last week!)

JBM, be careful, possums can be very aggressive. If your wife is feeding one and you let your cat out, it could hurt your cat fighting for the food. Be careful.

On today’s topics, the Delta CEO’s efforts are impressive. I have always selected Delta as my airline of choice, and will continue to have faith in them. They are a great company.

The pet food scare is very upsetting. I don’t feed any of my animals wet food (2 dogs, 3 cats), but I can’t even imagine how those folks feel that lost a pet to this mysterious poisoning. We do need to take things like that seriously. Many folks consider pets to be part of the family.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus - I’m with you Jim. That’s not the type of topic that should be getting free press at school functions. It’s inappropriate, and I think the principal had every right to take action.

Poor Gonzalez. Just another victim of the Democrats’ feeding frenzy. They will not be happy until they are in complete control. And then - look out. When I think of complete Democrat control I start wondering if I’d just be better off quitting my job and letting some other poor SOBs pay for my food, house, medical, car, etc. If we can’t beat ‘em, we might have to join them.

Van, What was apparent to everyone at the outset of the Katrina disaster is that Kathleen Blanco and Ray Nagle were so totally in the weeds that it was impossible for them to find their way out alone. The purpose of upper management is to quickly recognize that sort of thing, step in, take control and resolve the problem. Upper management, meaning Chertoff and the White House hit the snooze button and didn’t take action until they sensed some political vulnerability associated with the American public’s recognition that the buck stops at the top.

What we are lacking in this country is the ability of government to manage. Right now our elected officials and bureaucrats can’t manage a one-man rock fight. There is too much money being thrown around and no accountability. We the people have to keep sending the message to Congress, WE VOTE!

Iran seized 15 British Sailors! If the powers that forced Bush to invade Iraq were waiting for an excuse to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities, we can expect some shock and awe soon. If our intel is as good as advertized, then we know exactly where to put a smart bomb to cripple Iran’s nuclear capability, and now is the time. China may object, and this could be the start of something really worrisome. Or it could be more hooey that never leads to anything but a wall of worry for wallstreet to climb. (The Spring rally is going to be stellar. Buy across the board in all sectors now.)

Recent history: In 2004, Iran seized some British Sailors. They released them after a blindfolded Utube style confession of boundary trangressions and then everyone forgot about it and the stock market didn’t flinch. The question is: Why now? What meeting in Iran took place that decided now would be a good time to capture more british sailors? Is this about saving face after nuclear concessions were agreed to? That means that a big announcement is pending concerning Iran’s nukes. Or it’s just more clowning from that Iranian Prez who’s last name is neither pronouncable nor spellable and I’m not going to attempt it here, (the hell I’m not): “Ah-mini-jihad” ….. (Gezundheit!)

Well, I’m just suprized Wooten didn’t say nothing about the big news of the day. Seems some white woman accidently got the sperm of one of Those People in one of them clinics and the baby turned out to be one of Those People.

If we keep it, I would have to become a librul! So you would have Redneck Convert out there with Al Sharpton and the others demonstrating and accusing other people of racism. It would be worse than death. Me and getalife and Dennis and other libruls on this blog would be ganging up together.

Well, I’m signing off for the weekend before Markus gets off from his truck driving job and hogs the whole blog. I guess TFTT is in rehab again, we haven’t heard from him in a couple days. I saw David Iglesias, one of the fired US Atorneys during an interview last night. He wants justice. He was doing a good job and the record reflects that. He received a disturbing phone call from Pete Domenici. He explained to Domenici that he couldn’t talk about the specifics of the corruption case that was under investigation. When pressed by Domenici he indicated that while he had recently attained convictions for 4 democrat judges, he doubted that he could attain a conviction for another before election day. Domenici hung up on him and Igelsias was gone 6 weeks later.

Lesson learned, if you have a political axe to grind, don’t fire intelligent, hard-working successful professionals. They tend to get rankled and then pursue justice for themselves.

Jim Wootens writes; • Cynical. How else to describe a U.S. House that adds money for veterans and children’s medical care (PeachCare) to a $100 billion funding bill for troops in Iraq, to which they’ve attached a surrender-and-go timetable.”

“…surrender-and-go timetable” aside, are you saying Mr. Wooten that the children and the veterans don’t deserve any funding? If not, then what difference does it make to what bill the “attachment” was made?

Wooten then continues; “Some $20 billion in domestic spending is added to buy votes and to give Democrats political fodder when the president vetoes this bill, as he must.”

Would you be complaining if this “addition” was added by Republicans? C’mon! We all know you’d be pleased as punch if the “addition” had been made by the Republican party.

Your comment, Mr. Wooten, “Does anybody think handing over Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will satisfy the sharks?…The Dems’ Washington, D.C., game is to destroy the administration, not to find truth.”

Interesting, isn’t it Mr. Wooten, now that the ball is rolling, just how many REPUBLICANS have suddenly found their spines to stand up with the Democrats against the corruption of the Bush administration.

And you remark, “It’s politics by subpoena. Fire the crooks….” stand by the besieged.”

Yes, it’s politics by the law. Only, let’s put the crooks all in prison for a long, long time. We can even begin alphabetically, Abramhoff, Bush, Cheney,

“…stand by the besieged” you say.

Absolutely! The besieged Americans who have been misled into war, who have had their rights abused by the CIA, the FBI, the Secret Service, the Justice Department, members of Congress, their own military….

“Bong Hits 4 Jesus” did exactly what Joseph Frederick intended, attracted attention. What Principal Morse should have done was ignored the behavior. Just like small children stop throwing tantrums when they realize they are being ignored, students like Joseph Frederick will stop silly stunts (and that is all this was, a silly harmless stunt) if they are ignored. Of course, with todays 24 by 7 news envioronment and blogs etc., someone will get their panties in a bunch and give the desired attention.

Same deal with the fired US attorneys. After finally being told “no”, W is behaving like a petulant child (not that the dems are behaving much better). As members of this administration have been fond of saying “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to be afraid of”. Of course, recent abuses of the Patriot Act by the FBI say otherwise.

As for Peach Care funding shortage, it is not surprising. Everyone wants government services but no one wants to pay (read taxes) for them.

jbm… you maybe unaware of this but Petsmart is run by PETA like nutters. They don’t yet sell snakes because they can’t perfect the feeding of frozen rats to snakes for sale. Feeding live rats, which is much better for Kucinich/Kerry types is morally unacceptable to Petsmart management suits. The staff locally have told me this. The Banfield vet services demanded $700 (not a joke) to perform just a simple puppy hernia repair on a dog I have. But if I had the dog “fixed” and so couldn’t ever breed her the charge, for both surgeries was just under $300. When asked about this absurdity (the pricing was quoted at 2 different Petsmarts) the staff had NO answer at all. My own vet expertly did the hernia repair plus microchipping for about $150. Beware Petsmart microchipping too, they insert two chips which is not needed.

Incidentally for those concerned about feeding dogs proper dog food which actually improves the coat and general well being of dogs - don’t buy the usual store brands like Iams, Purina, Science Diet, Biljac etc. This overpriced sh!te is filled with animal byproducts and all kinds of crap and is very poor nutritionally. Its also usually too high in protein for large breed puppies.

The American Dog Journal, completely independent with NO advertising whatever recommends holistic dog foods. The best one AND easily the best value for money is Eagle Pack and for even more savings try its “breeder” line of quality holistic dog foods sold as the brand Prism. See EaglePack.com for retailers for both lines. Eagle Pack products also ensure less in the way of loose stools, especially for puppies.

Prism Advantage (in green bags) for adult dogs is $24 for 50 lbs and is superb quality. Adult Eagle Pack foods start at @ 32 for 32 lbs.

Dear Barbara @ 9:36, the opossum family is distressing for us, but not for the reasons you imagine. Our cat ceased going outside several years ago, after an unpleasantness inflicted by a mockingbird, so she is not at risk. And, on the other hand, the pit bull-mix and the part-chow border collie found great sport in killing a half dozen opossums earlier this year, much to the chagrin of Mrs. jbmlaw.

Pets and wildlife are never a desirable mix. Our 13-year old dog, a Doberman-mix, when we lived in another state, had the unpleasant tendency to confront skunks during his nightly roaming; my sons embraced the nickname “skunky” for poor old Wolfgang, and it took years to excise the odor entirely. The absence of skunks has been one of the most pleasant aspects of life here in Georgia.

Dear DeeGee @ 10:09, for some of us, the individual states are sovereign entities, whose rights and obligations to handle their own affairs were wrongly usurped by the nannies at the Federal level (or what you lovingly refer to as “upper management.”) Strange, I think of accessing the Federal level as a descent into Dante’s seventh level.

Dear Dennis @ 10:43, please grant (that is a good democrat word, isn’t it?) that some of us did complain about republicrat spending, on the Daschle agriculture bill, and on the Kennedy education bill. Further, I cannot determine whether you use republican profligacy to endorse the wild spending of the current democrats, or to condemn it. Let’s condemn it together. And as for the republican congressmen who are agitated about the executive office cleaning house, Sununu gave us Souter, and Pryor is from Oregon – you have to limit your point to “republicans,” not informed conservatives. “Republicans,” led by their moderate brothers, frequently do stupid democrat-like things that Conservatives would not do, like McCain-Feingold, all for the sake of accommodation. The world is better off with ideologically-based disagreement.

WASHINGTON - Former Deputy Interior Secretary J. Steven Griles pleaded guilty Friday to obstruction of justice in a Senate committee’s investigation, becoming the highest-ranking Bush administration official convicted in the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.

The former No. 2 official in the Interior Department admitted in federal court that he lied to the Senate about his relationship with convicted lobbyist Abramoff, who repeatedly sought Griles’ intervention at the agency on behalf of Abramoff’s Indian tribal clients.

My God, you mean a Bush Administration lied!! You remember how bad lying was in the 90’s?

Regarding dog food quality, they’re NOT all the same. All you can buy in a grocery store is crap, and most of what’s in Petsmart is crap too, but dry kibble such as Innova and Wolf King is different. On the corporate tax issue:

For Profit Corporations do not pay taxes, the costs of business are passed to the consumers through the price of the products or services the corporation provides. So the increase in corporate costs advocated earlier will only increase the price we pay and the same goes for Comrade Hilary’s cry “to take all of the oil company profits”.

There is no such thing as “corporate welfare”. This is simply a term created by the socialists who continually claim profits are bad. The vast majority of corporate shareholders, who the socialists would like to punish, are taxpaying citizens.

The Democrats seem to be successful in their goal to keep us from focusing on real problems by keeping the fired attorneys in the spotlight.

I would much rather our government focused on illegal immigration, taxation, the deficits - both budget and trade, and the threat posed by the Islamofacists.

An overhaul of the tax system could solve the budget and trade deficits as well, while making our goods and services more competitive in the world market.

J. Steven Griles is the highest-ranking Bush administration official to face charges in the wide-ranging scandal, which helped Democrats win control of the U.S. Congress last year. He was deputy secretary of the interior from 2001 to 2005.

In the last highway bill that the GOP allowed for all kinds of earmarks to go to their friends (you know, the bridge to nowhere), Wal-Mart got $37 million to improve the roads around their HQ in Bentonville Ark.

Or even benefit more than Democrats?

You mentioned the City of Atlanta road problems. Well, are you bothered that the last four Mayors ignored the sewer problem, the road problems and the rest of the infrastructure? All Democrats.

Are you bothered that Bill Campbell referred to government as a “jobs program” for blacks? Are you bothered that Bill Campbell had 125 discretionary city employees? These were personal appointees of Campbell with no job description and no set duties.

Matt @12:48, amen, brother!

TFTT, I’d like to know more about these dog foods you mentioned. Do they have a website? I admit, I’m a science diet fan. Before you say it’s crap, it has saved 2 of my animals’ lives over the years. When I took them in they were so malnourished and wormy that the vets gave them very little chance of survival. Several years of Science Diet later, they were more healthy than any other pets in the practice. I’ve been using Science Diet for over 18 years, and it really is good stuff. But this holistic food is getting more and more press, and I have heard only good things about it.

JBM, sorry to tell you, but we have skunks here too. Even in the suburban ATL.

abc, not sure I agree with you entirely on your comment that people who can’t afford premium pet food shouldn’t have pets. Those same people probably can’t afford premium people food either, but they do the best with what they have. Coming from a very poor upbringing, I can say that some of my best memories included the family pet, and I know that my mother sacrificed her own choice of foods in order to scape up enough for a bag of “Ole Roy” (Ughhh….)for the dog. Purina Dog Chow, sold even at Kroger, is a decent dog food that provides good nutrition and is affordable for those who can’t purchase the higher quality stuff. Pets bring down blood pressure and offer their owners love and affection that increases both the length and quality of the owner’s life.

well, as with the welfare mothers, maybe nothing at the IRS says corporations get welfare. maybe its not in the tax code. probably it isnt. why would it be in the tax code? taxes are when entities pay the government. welfare is the opposite: the government pays entities. that isnt taxation, so it does not appear in “the tax code”

Harold,

A comment earlier today referenced payments to corporate executives and the writer opined that payments such as those to Bob Nardelli and Jack Welch should not be deductible for income tax purposes.

My point was that using the tax code in such a manner harms the very people the writer would like to protect - the consumers and the shareholders. Also those who present such opinions often cite “corporate welfare” in the tax code as a reason for their beliefs. If corporations pay no tax then there can be no “corporate welfare” in the code.

What does any of this have to do with “welfare mommas puttin’ cheese on Big Macs”?

So really, although he didnt’ get it on his own terms, Bush has the ability to sign a bill to fund the troops. Congress inserted provisions as they are supposed to do in effort to exercise that forgotten thing called “Oversight.” Now Bush has to stay on “principle” and vote against the bill, delaying money for the troops.

Had the admin been honest from day one about the intelligence re: any perceived threat from Iraq (miniscule) we probably wouldn’t be at war; since they weren’t, it’s about da*n time the Congress take the reigns back from the Decider.

I am encouraged, meanwhile, to see Rudy Giuliani hinting that we should change the “war on terror” phrase to something else—his suggestion of “the terrorists’ war against us” is closer to the mark, although I think it could be improved. Truthfully we need to reframe our thinking about this conflict, to escape some of the ridiculous partisanship evident on this blog and throughout our country.

Why don’t you tell us all those “other ways” to win the war besides Bush strategy or surrender? I would like to hear them before the Democrats give this country to terrorists.

Perhaps America should go back to isolationism and wait for the enemy to attack us? I didn’t like 9/11 myself and don’t want another.

We may have to “isolate” as the Democrats make a tangle of troop support and give a timetable to terrorists. Now what is your plan and please don’t mention Chamberlain?

JohnD,

I might be misunderstanding you, but you seem to be repackaging Neil Boortz’ argument that corporate taxes are actually embedded taxes passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. If so, you and Boortz are mistaken.

According to Boortz, eliminating corporate taxes will result in lower prices for consumers. Actually, business is likely to keep any savings realized to increase profits for shareholders (or raises/bonuses for upper management). Anybody with a modicum of business experience knows that business doesn’t lower prices when they save money on taxes, payroll or anything else for that matter. Prices are influenced by supply and demand, not “embedded taxes” as the Boortz wants you to believe. When demand rises, then prices rise; when demand falls, then prices fall. Boortz’ assumption also ignores the numerous businesses with no profits (ex: Ford, Delta) or thin profit margins, and therefore, would realize little or no savings to pass on to consumers.

Van and Logic = Oil and Water,

Their plan is surrender. The demo’s plan is to give the terrorists their first large scale victory. Yes, large scale, a bigger victory then 9/11.

The President wants us to beat the terrorists, the dems want us to give up.

Lets see, a mandatory pull out date - a slap in the face for all current and past members of the military.

Under Article I, section 8 of the Constitution, Congress has no power on how we fight wars. They can fund the war, they can make rules concerning war - they gave that up to the UN via various treaties -

Article II, section 2, give the President the power “The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States…”.

The actions of Congress come close, not quite, but close to the definition of treason. Article III, section 3 “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.”

Telling the enemy when we are leaving, seems close to “giving them Aid and Comfort.”

Finally, the dem’s have shown their true allegiance and it isn’t an allegiance to this country, just to their party.

Tired, good question! Why shouldn’t they talk to the committee without the documentation and swearing and stuff? Um… is that how it’s always been done before? Since Van@4:57 likes to quote the constitution on the limits of the legislature regarding the military, here are a couple from Article 1 section 8 of the constitution:

To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water;

To raise and support armies, but no appropriation of money to that use shall be for a longer term than two years;

Looks like the congress “does have the ability” to give the president a time table, especially since we are beyond the two year period. Also, I still don’t remember President Bush going to congress asking for a formal declaration of war.

Our treasury has emptied out as our debt spirals beyond imagination, while BushCo’s friends reap profits. Our soldiers are treated as disposable pawns; the survivors come back to red tape, apathy, and suicidal thoughts.

Deductive logic tells me something stinks of treason. The thick rancid clouds of putrid stench tell me this fish is rotting from the head down.

Is there any doubt about who the real enemy is:

Iran {{{captures}}} 15 Britons-Atlanta Urinal

I’m not talking about the Iranians.

“Capture” is a word that you would use if you were engaged in legal warfare with another nation.

“Taking hostage” is what all of the other normal, non piece of sh-it news agencies are using to describe this unlawful act against the troops of another country.

When did we go to war with Iran, I thought you jerk off’s said they weren’t interfering in Iraq?

Hey AJC, GFY with both hands.

Stick it up your as-ses.

If you’re gonna help the Iranians cover up their crimes, why don’t you get a shovel and help them bury some women and homosexuals in the ground up to their necks and throw some stones at them, doesn’t that sound like fun, you mofo’s?

Help them put together their nuclear bomb so they can blow up all the Jews you as-shole liberals hate so much.

{{{If calling them insurgents bothers you, why don’t we call them “people who do not want their country occupied by others?”}}}

Sticking up for “people that wait for women and children to form a crowd, strap a bomb on themselves and suicide bomb hundreds of them.”

How can anyone one defend these scumbag terrorists? Think about this for just one second you ignorant as-s maggoty wastes of humanity. Under your definition, Eric Rudolph and Timothy McVeigh were freedom fighters.

Run it up your as-s.

Shelly,

I do not consider Boortz an expert on taxes as now constituted or on the “Fair Tax” which I support. He is also not an expert on economics and I would never attempt to repackage or even use his line of reasoning. He is an entertainer and is the front man for the “Fair Tax” because he has a large radio following.

Both of you ignore the primary aspect of Capitalism with regard to pricing, after considering the cost to produce of course, and that is competition. GM lost $1,500 per vehicle sold last year. Why would they do such a thing? Because they could not sell vehicles at a higher cost to the consumer, thus supporting your demand portion of the equation. Corporations do not act in a vacuum; they act in the market place where market share gives you more leverage on pricing. If two competing entities have the same cost structure then prices will be the same or very similar so when taxes, for instance, are imposed on the entities those costs are passed on to the consumer.

Market share is affected by a number of separate, but intertwined, aspects and quality of product and pricing are two of them. If you and I sell the same item, or type of item, and I react to the reduction in costs produced by eliminating the imbedded taxes in your example, and you do not reduce price – then who is going to increase market share and profits? I am, most certainly. If price were not the major factor then Wal-Mart would not be the dominant retailer in the nation. Wal-Mart took steps to reduce costs and thus was able to beat the competition’s prices. All of this assumes demand for the product.

Loss and Value Accounting measures insurance claims related to business interruption insurance. One aspect of the loss is the level of benefits, as a percentage of salaries and wages, the insurance company is liable for in addition to the salaries and wages themselves. Payroll taxes are a portion of the benefits and matching Social Security and Medicare is 7.65% (up to the maximum for Social Security), unemployment taxes could be another 3+%, depending on the State – so there is almost 11% of salaries and wages in imbedded taxes. This is all passed on to the consumer, as are the other benefits.

An employees job is worth X dollars but the employee himself receives X minus the health insurance, minus the vacation time, minus the sick days, minus the taxes both withheld and matched, minus the cost of retirement plans and so on. The idea that the employer pays these costs is fallacious. The employee actually pays them out of the GROSS PAY the employee could have received if all the benefits and taxes were not part of the equation. In the earlier example of the insurance coverage we found jobs where the benefits were more than 40% of the employee’s wage or salary. Could the employee have bought the benefits on the open market cheaper than the employer? Perhaps the employee could and then instead of a wage or salary of $50,000 the employee could take home $70,000 and provide his own benefits package. For example, group health insurance is more expensive than individual policies. The reason being group plans must accept those with pre-existing health issues.

As for the thin, or no profit margin argument, if the companies do not adjust their business plan and adapt to the market there will be no company. Delta, GM, Ford and several others come to mind as examples of companies that could disappear if change does not come very quickly. Delta, if recent information is accurate, sounds as though they will avoid collapse. If nothing happens positively soon you can look for GM and Ford to file for bankruptcy and the secured bondholders will ultimately be operating the companies without the pension obligations, the union contracts, the shareholders and the unsecured debt. Either way, a reduction in costs for all the auto manufacturers would be passed on in reduced prices or the companies market share would erode. Thus, removing the taxes allows the company to sell their products at reduced prices to the consumer and still make a profit. Competition forces the price reduction.

Like I said yesterday the holistic dog foods are VASTLY superior to the store bought mass produced garbage.

read the dog owner comments and find a local retailer on:

www.eaglepack.com

Chicken Soup For Dogs is a pretty decent reasonably priced holistic food too but is very hard to find in GA in the shops. Solid Gold is a bit pricier but good. There are several other brands too.

I know a number of long established well known S.E. USA breeders that feed sh!te like Iams/Pro Plan and they have to feed the dogs canned dog food with crappy gravy and crappy meat to get them to eat this garbage. I know other “cheap” breeders who feed cheaper garbage like Purina Beneful or dog chow and their dogs do not grow to their full potential and have health problems. I know some breeders who feed Eukanaba which is very expensive and is also utter sh!te.

Its the difference between fast food and real (relatively) unprocessed natural food.

A top quality holistic dog kibble is all they need plus fresh water.

Prism Adult from Eagle Pack (in green 50lb bags is superb). This has just one less kind of meat than the Eagle Pack brand but otherwise is the same. Our pups always get large/giant breed puppy food Eagle Pack for the first 12 months or so which they thrive on.

We have six dogs so we need to feed them well but cheaply. I know breeders who feed Prism to dogs from jack russels (scum sucking rodents who need to be put down as a breed) to bloodhounds, labs and GSD dogs.

Feeding Rover and Spot some raw meat is also an excellent way to improve coats and condition. But NEVER cook the meat as this releases the harmful bacteria. We feed our dogs raw ground beef - Walmart 5lb rolls - cut into patties. Also raw chicken meat - NEVER ANY chicken BONES - just washed. Pork neck bones or fresh pork are good too. Rawhide bones are not good for dogs. Cattle hooves stink like an unwashed feminazi but are great for chewing on.

Portland liberal FREAK protester takes a dump on a burning US flag in front of women and children.

The Captain apologizes for sleeping through yesterday’s exchange. All it took was for good man Markus (of the convincingly foreign looking name) to generate some profound insight to spark me from my Cheeto-induced torpor. Tis the gravest danger facing a mighty, True Believing Keyboard Warrior these days, and sadly, I succumbed.

But no fear, fellow True Belief Christians, as I am back to agree solidly with Mr Wooten’s endorsement of the Godly Bobby Jindal. I say this, and why not…first the Governorship, then the White House.

Why, this is a man who has assisted in exorcisms and, by his own testimony, engaged in physical combat with Satan himself. Not only that, but he is brave enough to have written about this for everyone to read in the New Oxford Review in December of 1994.

See it here.

Yes indeed, this is just the kind of stalwart Christian Right Thinker we need, one who is unafraid of being pegged as “crazy as a loon” or “barking mad”.

I detect strong Presidential timber here. A man who, with mere laying on of hands, could purge the Congress of Satan’s influence. Just one handshake from the Exorcist is all it would take to turn Harry Reid to True Godliness and send the harpy Pelosi back to the kitchen where good Christian women belong. For all of Our Leader Bush’s backslapping and bald-head rubbing, he has never sent Lucifer on the run. It’s time we got a REAL man of God in place.

Another example of a sickness of the disease of liberalism: Political Correctness. If we stick our heads in the sand and make up euphemisms for things of which the reality of the situation might upset us, then the problem magically goes away… like renaming streets in Atlanta.

Anyway, it appears that the Europansies are starting to wake up to their over-estrogened limpwristed reaction to anything that may be deemed as offensive. Remember, one of the stipulations of the disease of liberalism is that you can’t speak your mind if it offends someone else. With disgusting liberals of course, that means speaking your mind about anything OTHER than what lines up 100% with the disease of liberalism.

Rise my son. Awaken. You have slept for a long time under oppressive post-nazi liberals. See the LIGHT now.

Of course, we are free in this nation to pull down our pants and take a dump on a burning US flag. THAT is not offensive. But supporting a child’s right to stay the HELL out of public liberal demoncat nazi indoctrination camps of government schools, now THAT is offensive. Sick liberals.

One classic rib tickler reads give them (blacks) reparations and then forcibly deport them back to AfriKa. The Wall Street Journal bitc-h slaps the liberals:

‘A Triumph for Pelosi’ The Democrats send their message on Iraq. Saturday, March 24, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT That’s how the Associated Press described yesterday’s vote by the House to demand a U.S. retreat from Iraq, and in the perverse calculus of Capitol Hill we suppose it was. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has demonstrated she can pile on enough pork to bribe enough Democrats to cobble together a bare, partisan majority to “send a message” that has no chance of becoming law. Congratulations.

{{{This is not to say the vote won’t do considerable harm. It will be noted by our enemies in Iraq and will encourage them to inflict more casualties to further sour American support. It will make it harder for Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to disarm Shiite militias, who can point to the vote and say the Americans will soon be leaving. And most disgraceful, it will send a message to U.S. troops that they can fight on—albeit without much chance of success and without Congressional support.}}}

{{{President Bush was quick to denounce the vote yesterday, promising a veto. And we hope he keeps it up. By bowing to their antiwar left, Democrats are once again showing that they can’t be trusted on national security. The President should drive that message home until Congress gives him a clean war bill that gives our troops the money to fight our enemies without having to take orders from MoveOn.org.}}}

Oh man, that’s got to sting.

OK, I am no fan of how we are handling the war in Iraq, and admittedly I am not well versed in the “ways of politics”. However, can someone PLEASE explain to me HOW it makes ANY sense at all to attach Farm subsidies, medical care issues and other TOTALLY unrelated issues to a war spending bill? The American people, regardless of politics should be insulted by the unethical behavior of our government officials. It should be required that EACH spending issue stand ON ITS OWN. Would it kill them to vote on these issues SEPARATELY? This type of political vote buying disgusts me and I am at a point where I want to CLEAN HOUSE at ALL levels of government. I say boot them ALL out of office, dem. and rep.

Van - Congress has the power of oversight of the Executive, even though Tony Snow and Dick CHeney argue otherwise. Remember balance of powers, and checks-and-balances? Those American ideals that have been abandoned? I do.

Dusty - Read some of what Wes Clark has been saying about strategy. Here’s a snippet: “The United States will win the war on terror when we bring to bear all the elements of our power — not just our military might, civilian workforce and diplomatic skills, but also the power to persuade our allies in general and those in the Muslim community specifically to engage the culture of hate and terror and change it to reflect the best in all of us.”

Bush is not engaging in diplomatic methods—the hard-liners discount those methods as weak while antagonizing everyone with the “war on terror” mantra. Problem is, diplomatic means work.

That second link is to a good article on our war mentality (the misguided “war on terror” phrase) that came out today: “Using this phrase has actually undermined our ability to effectively confront the real challenges we face from fanatics who may use terrorism against us.”

Stop and THINK.

On the subject of Corporate Class I wish someone would investigate the CEO of Worldspan—he is the absolute opposite of the Delta CEO in terms of class and common consideration for the company. Rather than thank and support his people, he has made sure that he an his minions will get many many millions while the rank and file (what’s left of them) haven’t had a raise in five years!!
