Beer, Heritage and subpoenas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Notes from the weekend:
Item: General Assembly returns today. And how did we get here? The “pressing” issues attracting public attention are Sunday beer and wine sales, whether to apologize for slavery and eugenics, Confederate Heritage and History Month and payday lending, Republicans, who support lots of ideas that would be unpopular among most media critics, like vouchers, really do need to become more media-savvy so they know when to stand and argue unpopular ideas and when to leave them on the back-burner.
Item: State Sen. Eric Johnson (R-Savannah) is attempting to pull together something that would put the state on record as apologizing or expressing regret on slavery, as Virginia. These debates really are growing tiresome. And an apology is meaningless without compensation. This is wholly about politics, of course. As House Speaker Glenn Richardson noted, Democrats controlled both houses of the Legislature from just after the Civil War until three years ago and the demand never surfaced.
Item: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani gains, John McCain slips among Republicans. Republicans who say they would consider voting for Giuliani increase from 58 in February to 64 percent, while those who would consider McCain slide from 46 to 42 in a Harris Poll conducted March 1 thorugh 12. Twenty-eight percent of Republicans list Rudy as their first choices, 11 percent McCain.
News is good for Newt Gingrich, not for Mitt Romney. Among Republicans, 29 percent would voting for Gingrich and 8 percent list him as their first choice. Some 23 percent would consider voting for Romney, only 3 percent would choose him first.
The dominant consideration for Republicans, and then for the country, is which potential President can best lead a nation at war. Then which is a small-goverment fiscal conservative. And which will appoint strict-constructionist judges.
Item: Did I miss something? Don’t U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President? They do. Democrats and their media allies are determined to find great scandal in the removal of 8 U.S. attorneys by the administration. The administration was dissatisfied with their performance and they were removed. Political appointees serve at the pleasure of the governors, Presidents and other appointing authorities. But settle in for a two-year performance on the use the subpoena power of Congress for political. theater. It’s not about governing; it’s about winning the White House.

John McCain has lost my vote with his recent ideas on improving Americas image.
In a news paper article - By Philip Sherwell in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Sunday Telegraph
“I would immediately close Guantanamo Bay, move all the prisoners to Fort Leavenworth (an army base in Kansas) and truly expedite the judicial proceedings in their cases,” he said. “I would reaffirm my commitment to address the issue of climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. I know how important this is in Europe in particular.”
Caving in to the wackos about Gitmo and kissing up to the EU on climate change is not the way to the conservative heart.

Nope the way to the Conservative heart is to ignore climatic changes; thumb your nose at the rest of the world, then come begging to them for help when your “we’ll do it ourselves and you’re either with us or against us” attitude has gotten you into a world political quagmire about an unprecedented, unpopular war.
Another way to “truly” prove that you are a true conservative, (fiscal conservative no less), is to spend, spend, spend, put government into everybody’s personal business, (Terri Schiavo); kiss up to the health industry; ignore anyone that can’t afford to pay for the $10K per plate fundraiser events; have modern day “thugs”, child molesters, perjurers, and arrogant cowboys as your spokes persons. Oh and let’s not forget, your very own mouthpieces for hate and discord, Loonbaugh, Hammity and HomeBoy, C**, and your token black house negro Barber to spread your message of hate. All the while thumping your bibles and passing the hand grenades.

Good morning all. Jim, I know HL Mencken is not particularly appreciated in these parts, but your essays this morning sound like Mencken at his best. Lambasting the idiots of our own party for their misplaced priorities, and then attacking the reparations-useful idiots. You reserved your best shots for the Democrats who hype the sacked political appointees, although I know you are not shocked either. I hope our friend “Jim’s a Cherry Picker” noticed how the democrats raised the President’s request for $100 billion for Iraq, by adding all sorts of pork barrel, (a truly funny article) at http://www.opinionjournal.com/weekend/hottopic/?id=110009799 and simultaneously forbad the Congressional Research Service from keeping tabs. http://www.opinionjournal.com/jer/?id=110009803
While you are on the subject of 2008 elections, though, I would love to see whether the Saturday WSJ profile of Fred Thompson may have an effect on the Republican preferences. I sense that Fred will take a lot of votes from both Rudy and John. We have not yet heard the wisdom of Wooten on the horse race.

Second, Sonny lied and Sonny cheated. That’s what Sonny did and any attempt by O’Neal, Wooten, spokespig McLagan or others to spin it will not cut it with the feds. Pray for them to take down this corrupt buffoon.

Apologies over slavery are stupid and pointless. Confederate History Month? Stupid and pointless. Although it might be nice for southerners to actually learn something about the Civil War, the battle flag-wavers most often don’t know diddly about it.
McCain, Giuliani and Gingrich aren’t electable. Romney, maybe, but not likely. Clinton and Obama are scary prospects. I’m still waiting for a viable candidate from either party. Will it be another least worst choice for President?

Well, hold on to your hat. Me and Jim Earl and Joe Bill was in the rented trailer down at Hampton Sunday before the race started and talking about how none of us liked the crop of Republicans running for president, they were all too librul in diffrent ways. Joe Bill turned to me and said, “Red, why don’t you run for president?” The upshot of it all is I’m the newest candidate for president of the US and I’m asking for your support. Joe Bill is my manager and Jim Earl will be my cheif of staff.
Here’s my platform, which I hope will please all Southren people:
I will bring our soldiers home and deal with the illegals and jobs problems while winning the war at the same time by drafting all illegals into the army and sending them to Iraq. I will cut the normal pay of the illegals big time while they are in the service. If you step across the border you are going straight to boot camp. I figure pretty soon I’ll have about 20 million soldiers in Iraq and after we deal with the ragheads there we will deal with the other countrys that hate us over there. With the illegals gone we will all have plenty of jobs to pick from.
The death penalty for everybody that gets arrested. If the cops nab you for anything you get the needle. No more judges except for a couple to sign papers and no more prisons to keep up and pay for. I will buy enough trucks to haul the bodies with.
Big tax cuts for everybody and we pay off the national debt. I will use the money saved on the military and prisons and judges and lawyers to pay off our debt to the Reds and to whack everybodys taxes big time.
I will get rid of the civil rights laws that take our house seats away from us and cost us so much money.
I will get rid of taxes on tobacco and beer. I may tho put taxes on the 3 buck coffee and bottled water of the people that has been socking it to us rednecks all these years.
No more schools except for people that can afford to pay for their own brats. Schools is what turned out the libruls that are raising such a ruckus today.
So there you have it. Some of you may nag about me not making it past the 5th grade and how I need more smarts and all to be president. Well, the president now is about the dumbest in histry and it ain’t hurt him none. And Sonny ain’t exackly the brightest star in the sky.
The best part is I think just like most GA people except they have got browbeat by the libruls and are too shamed to come right out and say what they think.
So first I plan to get the support of jbmlaw, who said the other day that Thompson is a lead-pipe cinch if he gets behind him. I figure that if I can talk jbmlaw into backing me I’m going to be golden. And I need to raise lots of money. So send all the money you can to Redneck Convert for President, c/o Simpsons Trailer Park, Dawsonville, GA. Thanking you for your support.

JBMLAW for president!!! Why not? he can be a psuedo lawyer just like Dumbya was a psuedo Airman.
He’d be great!! He can get all his state of the union addresses from Fox News, rule by the “he who has the gold” theory, take away the Bill Of Rights and change it to the Bill of I’ll Say What’s Right, AND get drunk off of Jim Beam and pass out while eating a pretzel!! I truly do not understand this battle over apologizing for slavery. Did not the civil rights movements, and the instigation of equal rights laws say enough about this topic? I am concerned that a government apology may indeed open the door for reparations. If that happens, where is my representation????? After all, my background is Cherokee Indian from south GA. If apologies and reparations are due, I think I should be put in line ahead of blacks…….

The “voucher” thing again?
Ah, Mr. Wooten. When are you critcs of public education going to learn that if you want good education, you have to pay for it? But, it’s not like you don’t know it. Is it?
You are just so reluctant to admit that what you really want is to get out on the cheap - like always.
Regarding “media savvy”, Mr. Wooten, one of the good things that has come out of the Bush administration follies it that the public is now onto the lies of the mainstream media. Although, I’ve got to give you and the media credit, you are still trying to bamboozle the public.
And many of us are aware that the mainstream media is in bed with William Casey, who stated, “We’ll know our disinformation program is working when everything the American people believe is false.” (William Casey at his first CIA meeting).
But, we, the American people, aren’t buying in any longer, like we’re supposed to, are we?
Mr. Wooten writes, “The dominant consideration for Republicans, and then for the country, is which potential President can best lead a nation at war.
Mr. Wooten, why not the consideration by Republicans for a president that can lead us out of war? I mean, wasn’t it a Republican administration that lied and has led us into the fiasco that we are now in (with support of the mainstream media)?
Mr. Wooten writes, “Then which is a small-goverment fiscal conservative. And which will appoint strict-constructionist judges.”
I think we’ve seen where that will lead us; for example, seems I recall a “strict constructionist” judge who just insisted that the “ten commandments” must be hung at the court house.
Problem with all of the potential presideential candidates you’ve mentioned, Mr. Wooten, is that none of them are trustworthy worth a damn.
But, the Democrats aren’t doing much better either.
Mr. Wooten writes, “Did I miss something? Don’t U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President? They do. Democrats and their media allies are determined to find great scandal in the removal of 8 U.S. attorneys by the administration.”
Seems quite a few Republicans agree with the Democrats. Wonder why that is? Maybe the media is doing a poor job of masking the truth. (William casey would be very disappointed).
But then, there was this little item Arlen Specter’s office (if not himself) tried to sneak into the so-called “Patriot Act(s)” to create a method to get around the customary confirmations of AGs by Congress.
This was not an “open” act, but a sneaky act. Why sneaky?
Mr. Wooten writes, “But settle in for a two-year performance on the use the subpoena power of Congress for political theater.”
Tell you the truth, Mr. Wooten, I always enjoy the exposure of wrong doing by corrupt politicians. And this movie should run a long time.
(But, if he keeps his mouth shut, watch for a pardon for Scooter Libby - who was convicted by a jury of his peers - people like you and me).
You don’t have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.
It’s not about governing; it’s about winning the White House.

Still at least the horrid and very vile sluttish crackpipe will likely have an opportunity to gloriously celebrate Confederate History Month soon. A perfect, fitting long overdue natural balance to the nauseating, race pandering black history month. Which mercifully was only a week once upon a time and despite being pitifully extended for three more tedious worthless extra pandering weeks is still a complete and utter waste of time, as evinced by the same tired old, overwhelmingly pathetically inadequate “achievements” which are annually dutifully puked up on WSB by Monikkka ‘which ragged wig is it today folks? Debbiedoeswrong,
The way to prove you are a “true liberal” is to spend, spend, spend (the lib legacy while the Dems controlled Congress and sadly, continued by the Republicans), put government into everyone’s business(universal healthcare and the IRS), destroy the finest healthcare industry in the world, ignore everyone who can not afford to spend $10,000 to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom, have modern day thugs (Lanny Davis, et. al.) mount a TV crusade demonizing Monica as a “star struck liar” until - oops the blue dress, have a child-molester and rapist President Bill, perjurers such as Bill and Hil, and arrogant liberals as your spokespersons.
Let us not forget your own mouthpieces for hate and discord such as Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo and the others on Air America – oops Air America had no listeners, and of course Bill and Hil had no token Negro since they had no Blacks in significant roles in their (plural intended) administration, and Bill and Hil only attended church with the appropriate photo ops when convenient to distract from their problems, while bombing drug stores during the Lewinsky debacle.
Ah yes, noble leaders these liberal Democrats.

A George W. Bush federal justice appointee just voted to overturn Washington D.C. handgun control laws and wrote an opinion that pretends that the first clause of the Second Amendment doesn’t exist, ignores the will of the people, and ignores established Supreme Court precedent. This hero of the right is, using Jim’s definition, is considered to be a “strict-constructionist”. I have to call bull$hit on that one.
As far as “small-government fiscal conservatives” are concerned, the enormous growth of our national debt over the last six years (in part, due to the enormous growth of non-defense, discretionary spending) has demonstrated that when you put the word Republican in front of the phrase, you have an oxymoron.

Jim…concerning the slavery apology issue…it’s the next logical step for these civil rights hucksters like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and theit ilk…so they can then scream for reparations. Simple as that… As for those fired US attorneys and the Dems making political hay from them? That’s not surprising. If those evil, hypocrites can make hay out of a hurricane to make Bush look bad…then this is an easy one. I’m furious at the gutless and spineless Republicans for allowing these Mafia-types to push them around so much. If Rush Limbaugh and Matt Drudge and others can dig up, day after day, statements and actions by liberal Democrats that the GOP could use in a nano-second to refute these silly witch-hunts…then why can’t Bush and his cronies?? Why do they just stand by and watch the Dems and their allies in the drive-by media do this to them??? Do they really think the American public is smart enough to discern Joseph Goebbels -Nazi type propaganda and ignore it?? They would be stupid to put their faith there…about 50% of this country is stupid, gullible, and uneducated enough to fall for the lies and tripe the Democrats and the media is pulling on them!! The GOP is a bunch of linguine-spined jellyfish…while the Democrats behave like a bunch of organized crime families! The country has some real “wonderful” choices doesn’t it??

I am sorry; I totally ignored the inane prattle with which you began your post. I succumbed to the horrible heat wave we have as a result of global warming. Yeah right! Only you liberal hacks could believe such bunk as CO2 being the cause of a global warming disaster. Cycles, you must be in one yourself, are the history of the earth with regard to climate and man has little or no effect on the heat, cold, rain, or storm conditions.
I know, 2100 UN scientists agree - but have you researched the credentials of the scientists? Have you done any research to discover whether those named by the UN actually subscribe to those presentations? I thought not.
There have been several reports done on the individuals and the conclusions drawn by the UN and the results indicate the “Inconvenient Truth” is actually just a “Convenient Lie”.
Your first clue should have been the spokesperson. Al Gore. Are you serious? The “founder” of the internet, the author of the plan to build our strategic oil reserves, the erstwhile black preacher himself! Gore has been debunked so many times as to be wholly laughable.
I failed to mention his honorable practice of buying “carbon credits”. Does he transfer the money for the “credits” from Tipper’s account to his, or vice versa? From his increase in size I would suggest Al is a prime source of CO2 emissions.
And one of the liberals here refers to “blind conservatives”. Gore was, is and always will be a FRAUD, but none of you liberals can see.

those in power send the children of those not in power to die to preserve the power status
in the south those in power maintained it on the backs of the blacks
they fought to retain that power and history of the event is important but having the film and artifacts located at a grassy field with beautiful trees is a waste of a grassy field with beautiful trees
for history accuracy they should have civil war sites be covered in dirt, mud, feces, dead bodies, scorched earth, no trees, nothing beautiful, in short all civil war history sites should be in dekalb county

Debbie, what’s your point? Are you agreeing with me, that before we apologize for slavery we should apologize to the American Indians for taking their land? I move we give it back to them. How much of what you have worked for and saved is coming to me? And how long will you have to keep apologizing to me, even though you weren’t even born when the Indians were rounded up, raped, pillaged, and forced into prison camps, called reservations? After all, my great, great, great Grandmother’s suffering during that time has taken such a toll on me that I shouldn’t have to behave like everyone else. I should be able to sit back and rake in the benefits of simply being related to someone who suffered hundreds of years ago, just because I can link my heritage to someone I never even knew…..
See, it sounds so stupid coming from a white person…..

To me its extremely racist and bigoted that there’s no Disabled Lesbian/Transexual Eskimo Single Parent Month. After all who knows what great contributions that disabled lesbian Eskimos have made to America. Because of black (racist) selfishness we’re ALL mising out on this rich history.
I think blacks should IMMEDIATELY allow February to be the month to honour the equally rich and vital contributions of their Eskimo bruthas and sistahs for at least a couple of decades. TO NOT DO SO WOULD BE RACIST!!

That would be a REPUBLICAN vice; Remember our trillion dollar plus surplus at the end of Bill’s presidency? I wonder what happened to that…….?
put government into everyone’s business(universal healthcare and the IRS)
Honestly, how can blame DEMOCRATS for that when every state had a voice in the creation of the IRS?!! Brief history of the IRS: In 1913, Wyoming ratified the 16th Amendment, providing the three-quarter majority of states necessary to amend the Constitution. The 16th Amendment gave Congress the authority to enact an income tax.
destroy the finest healthcare industry in the world
How / when did that happen? Please give details.
have a child-molester and rapist President Bill, perjurers such as Bill and Hil
Brief history lesson, MONICA was an adult. Ask Mark Foley how young was that boy he was trying to “teach” about congessional paging. Perjury?! Here are the KINGS of perjury: Dubya, Cheney, Libby, Rice, DeLay. Try again.
Let us not forget your own mouthpieces for hate and discord such as Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo — and of course Bill and Hil had no token Negro since they had no Blacks in significant roles in their (plural intended) administration
Sigh. Al Franken, Jeaneen Garoflo, do not speak in behalf of the Democratic Party. They are private citizens who speak their own minds – it’s written in the constitution that they can you know. Heavy Sigh, Bill had no blacks of significance in his party? Another history lesson for you: Remember Ron Brown? Look him up when you get a chance. Also google how many Blacks were in positions of power in the Clinton Administration, after you do this, it will dispel the myth of your post.

WOOT:
No, It’s not that they “serve at the pleasure of the President.” (hilariously mocked on the Daily Show, but I’m sure you missed out on the laughs because it’s a Liberal-leaning show)
No, the problem is that the Justice department isn’t supposed to be reserved for just “loyal Bushies,” and hasn’t been used so politically in any administration prior to the current corrupt one. If Judges shouldn’t be “activist,” and shouldn’t read things into the law that aren’t there, whether or not they’re loyal Bushies is not a valid reason for dismissal, is it?
They all got GREAT performance reviews, so your presumption that it was performance related is toast. This was partisan Republican politics of the Karl Rove and Tom DeLay model, sinking to yet another low.
Bush supporters deserve to be mocked mercilessly. And our great country deserves better.

Debbie,
You are a lost soul!
The Democrats have, until this last Republican Congress, been the biggest spenders. You follow their line because, as you noted in other posts, you have the “entitlement mentality”.
The surplus resulted from an expanding economy, the same thing that balances all federal budgets and creates federal surpluses. The boom began under GHW Bush. History indeed!
Actually every state did not have a vote. There is credible evidence the 16th Amendment was not ratified and the Democrats have led the effort to keep the current Internal Revenue Code as their primary source of power. You do understand wealth redistribution?
Given the choice of healthcare here or in their own country the Canadians, Brits and everyone with the ability comes to this country. Do you ever read anything other than your own drivel?
Monica was an intern, under the management of the President and in any other industry Bill would have been jailed but his minions circled the wagons and sent dozens of Democrats on the TV and radio trail to defend this jerk. Then the minions found he lied to them as well.
Bill and Hilary lied under oath - a proven fact, not just inflammatory supposition such as you produce.
Franken and Garafolo were interviewed at the Democrat convention by all the major news sources. They were on a failed liberal radio network. You cited the conservative radio personalities but since the liberals have no personalities you want to call foul when these two clowns are cited You do not even read your own posts do you?
As for your last history lesson you should not forget Ron Brown’s famous last words to Bill - “If I go down, I will take you with me”. This reportedly said after the President threatened to remove him as the only Black in his Cabinet. He then left on a trip from which he never returned. What an amazing coincidence. I guess he committed suicide like so many other Clinton insiders.
Face the facts Debbie. You post these comments and then when challenged go to Google to try and find support. Are you the person who claimed to graduate from “Spellman” but did not know the proper spelling of the school?

Debbie, my point? You mean, you didn’t get it? My point is that we can all look back in our past and find some evidence of some injustice done to some distant relative. Why many of us can even look back in our own past and find some injustice done to us. Some choose to focus on the past and keep dragging it up, dividing people and preventing us from moving forward. My point, simply, is GET OVER IT. Move on. Stop complaining. Live your life. Why should I, a white/American Indian southerner with a past history as poor farmers who never (proven by journals kept in my family for generations) either owned slaves or believed it was right, have to pay anyone else in this country? Or apologize for anything? Not so far back, my mother even participated, during her college years, in sit-ins to show support for equal rights for blacks. I don’t owe anybody anything. No apology, no reparations, no special treatment - nothing! Get over it.

JohnD works overtime to repeat his favorite right-wing internet rumors, and to his credit, it’s difficult to keep up with his limitless collection of falsehoods and misrepresentations.
Dear JohnD,
No, Al Gore never claimed to invent the internet.
No, we don’t have the finest health care system in the world (approximately 46,000,000 currently uninsured –- many families have been thrown into bankruptcy because of medical expenses).
No, Bill Clinton isn’t a child-molester or a rapist.
No, “Bill and Hil” didn’t bomb any drug stores.
Yes, Clinton had several blacks (and women) in significant roles in his administration.
No, the climatologists, meteorologists and other scientists whose research was presented and summarized in a report about global warming to the United Nations are not “UN scientists”. http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/02/20070202.html
Yes, since the Democrats ran Congress for the last 40 years, they were the biggest spenders until Republican took over and made them look frugal.
No, there’s no evidence that Hillary lied under oath, and yes, Bill was held in contempt for doing so by a judge – but, that’s not proof. (Contempt citations don’t require the standard of proof – beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury – that a conviction requires).
No, Ron Brown never said, “If I go down, I will take you with me.”
No, it is not a crime to have a sexual relationship with a subordinate and nobody goes to jail for doing so.
Yes JohnD, you’re a dumbazz for choosing to believe everything you read and hear that’s in compliance with your twisted view of those who disagree with your extreme right politics.

Wooten wrote, “Did I miss something? Don’t U.S. attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President?”
Yes Jim, you did miss something. Although U.S. attorneys do serve at the pleasure of the President, they do so with reservations. The federal obstruction of justice statute (18 U.S.C. §§ 1512) says U.S. attorneys can be fired at the pleasure of the President, but not “to corruptly obstruct, influence, or impede an official proceeding.” So, the reasons for Bush’s recent firings of eight United States attorneys are absolutely relevant.
Also, as you know, calling U.S. attorneys on the telephone to influence investigations and/or prosecutions is illegal and so is lying to Congress about those firings (or anything else).
It looks as though Mr. Bush is likely to have some more pardons to consider.

Mr. Jim: What part of this attorney generals’ dismisal scandal are you not getting? As Digby says:
“One of the silliest conventions of modern journalism is that the press can’t tell a story if “the other side” isn’t screaming about it. Republicans are always screaming (and often are the ones feeding the scandal to the press in the first place) so it’s very easy to find that hook. Democrats don’t have the institutional infrastructure to successfully manufacture scandals and are often slow off the mark in seeing real ones, so the press doesn’t feel they have any reason to pursue them. (And I guess stories about crass political patronage, even in the justice department, just aren’t considered news anymore. That’s a sad comment all by itself.)”

Study Confederate history for sure because it is part of American history. You can’t understand the present without understanding the past.
But Confederate heritage? Like what? Owning slaves? Dueling? A landed gentry? Economic dependence on a single crop? Thinking bravery, tough words, and devotion to a “cause” is going to beat a heavily industrialized nation? Not knowing when to quit?
I have lived in the South since birth, but I’ll take American heritage any day over the blinkered heritage of the Confederates.

I bet Mr. Wooten considers President Reagan (deficit, what deficit?) a fiscal conservative. Look at the numbers, the two “darlings” of the conservative movement, Presidents Reagan and Bush (43, not 41) have done more to grow the nations debt than any other presidents. I wonder which is more dangerous to our long term security, Al Queda or the fact that so much of our debt is held by countries that are less than friendly to the US. I want to laugh every time I see a member of this administration talk about “getting tough” with China, when they hold such a large portion of our debt.
Mr. Wooten is right about one thing, attorneys do server at the pleasure of the president. It would be interesting to see if President Bush would be willing to have the new attorneys go through the senate confirmation process rather than use the new provision in the Patriot Act that allows the Attorney General to appoint their replacements.

Silly Debbie @ 10:01, I don’t eat pretzels!
Dear JoeD @ 12:08, I partially disagree – since you used the term “Republican” you would be literally correct. I think Ann Coulter does speak for most conservative voters; when she speaks, we are the ones laughing at the democrat-jokes. And Rush and Bill O’Reilly and Sean similarly speak for conservatives, although not necessarily for Republicans. There is a difference between the parties (Peggy Noonan wrote an observant essay, without the harsh tone in my too-clever notes here, in the Saturday WSJ – “The Trouble with Loyalty”). http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=110009790
Republican voters tend to be ideas-oriented people, and Democrat voters tend to follow individuals, without regard to ideology or even character. Neither is 100% true, but it is a well-drafted argument.
Dear JDDHP @ 12:11, we can surely agree that Mr. Gore engaged in a bit of resume padding on the internet issue. [“Here is Blitzer’s entire query to Gore: ] BLITZER: I want to get to some of the substance of domestic and international issues in a minute, but let’s just wrap up a little bit of the politics right now. Why should Democrats, looking at the Democratic nomination process, support you instead of Bill Bradley, a friend of yours, a former colleague in the Senate? What do you have to bring to this that he doesn’t necessarily bring to this process? [Clearly, Blitzer is asking Gore to offer an explanation of how he differs as a politician from other politicians in general, and his rival at the time, Bill Bradley, in particular. Here is Gore’s entire response to Blitzer’s question: ] GORE: Well, I will be offering - I’ll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be. But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I’ve traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country’s economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system. http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue5_10/wiggins/

Republican voters tend to be ideas-oriented people, and Democrat voters tend to follow individuals, without regard to ideology or even character. Neither is 100% true, but it is a well-drafted argument.
What a big wet steaming pile of horse-sh-t. What do you hope to state or accomplish with such a sweeping over-generalization? “Oh GEE WHIZ Mr. brilliant lawyer man! Debbie, I must admit, getting you stirred up was not my primary goal. However, your off the wall rants are pretty funny. Take a breath once in a while. I don’t recall taking any “Confederate” stance of which you accuse me, but we all have a past and I accept mine. Yes, mine is mostly southern, although we have found old family journals that show relatives fighting on both sides of the Civil war. Families whose roots go back as far as mine on American soil often had kin on both sides. Their writings even indicate that our family knew of the kin on both sides at the same time. Interestingly, the writings never included anything about slavery on either side….

JoeD,
Your Comrade friend, Debbie, not only believes those you cited speak for the Republican Party she posted just that earlier today. So, do you speak for “everyone” or not? NOT!
Popsickle, at least the sick part of your name is correct. Not only did Gore make the claim to being the “Father” of the internet, he also claimed to have been instrumental in the development of the Strategic Oil Reserves even though the plan was in place before he entered the Senate.
You are correct on the drug store; it was actually a factory for making legitimate pharmaceuticals. The plant was a terrible threat to our nation during the Lewinsky mess.
Clinton has been accused of rape and Paula Jones also leveled a credible charge. You recall he committed perjury in the Paula Jones case?
Sicko, were you in the presence of Ron Brown during his conversations with the President? No, I thought not. You and Debbie write about all the Blacks and women in “significant roles” in his administration but you never name one, not even Madeline Albright who makes every Bush appointee appear brilliant in comparison.
How do you explain all of the suicides and strange deaths that have surrounded the Clintons since he became a politician? Amazingly most were his supporters at one time who later became opponents. I guess they knew too much.
Lack of insurance does not demean the quality of the health care system. We are the envy of the world in health care, but unrecognized by you and your liberal zealot friends is the fact that people must pay for health care. You think care should be free, as one of the inalienable rights. How dim can you be? No wait, you want businesses to pay for your health insurance! Then the increased cost is passed on to all consumers but you still live in your dream world that the insurance is “free”.
Sickle, do you have a job? Well I think whatever service or good you produce should be free and you have no right to deny the rest of America the opportunity to have your service or product simply because they are unable to pay. How will that affect the Sicko family budget? Or, are you a government employee?
Hilary lied about the White Water billing records. She claimed she had not seen them or knew where they were when questioned but then the records appeared with her fingerprints in the White House.
Only a Liberal would want to hide behind the strict definition of abuse of a subordinate, whether a page or an intern, to protect a politician. You note the Republicans accused of such behavior are gone but we still have the Democrats making leaders of their trash.
You, popsicko, are a joke and should go back to dialykoz with the other profane whack jobs.

Not to take up for derangedDebbie, but I don’t think the majority of black americans have the luxury of tracing their history. Unless they are Chris Tucker, or Oprah who can afford the only means, genetic. I can trace my ancestors all the way back to the first on American soil..and even further back to native Austria and Germany. Blacks are pretty much limited to post slavery..whats that..1865 or more recent.

I appreciate your point about blacks not being able to trace their history back so far, and I agree that’s a bummer. However, like TFTT said, we all hit that marker somewhere. Almost every “race” or “breed”, “creed”, (or whatever word someone might choose to describe their ancestors) has been enslaved, oppressed, conquered, etc. Beyond that point, you probably can’t trace your roots. Still, not my fault….. I didn’t participate or support any oppression. I just get so tired of hearing about it. And I think that to allow it to continue, or to actually respond with an apology, doesn’t do anyone good, but instead perpetuates the injustice. Heal, live and move on. And as far as not being able to trace all your relatives, I know I have a few that make me wish at times that I couldn’t trace my roots either :-)

Louise, although I know you are not being sincere, you are right. Many history books got it wrong. I am surprised at the errors we find in my childrens’ text books even now.
As stated before, my relatives were all poor farmers. We had no rich ancesters that I can find. Their civil war era writings were all centered around family, life back home, who got killed, etc. Similarly during the depressions, my relatives’ writings were not about how much money they lost, or politics, but about keeping closer tabs on the cost of goods, and things they learned for stretching their dollars. It really amazes me that southerners continue to be attacked as haters when, in reality many civil war era southerners were just trying to scratch out a living, spend time with family and leave more for their children than the generation before. Pretty simple, and nothing about hating others.

Or the mind-numbing JoeD who also makes comments he is unable to support or perhaps that wonderfully irrational Popsickle who would follow the Clintons over a cliff in awe struck wonder.
As for your “internet rumors” allegation you must not avail yourself of newspapers and TV news where the Broderick and Jones charges have been aired.
I would be gullible if I believed any of the liberal pablum posted by your heroes here.
I just spoke with a client from Europe who supports my assertion of the US health care being the best in the world. His example was that of a 60 year old in need of knee surgery and where he is from the patient would be denied surgery due to his age.

I’m a Southerner, born and bred. So are my parents and grandparents and their grandparents. My ancestory is irrelevant to what I’m about to say, but it seems important to you and others when making your case.
The Civil War was about slavery. The Confederate States of America were formed to maintain slavery. I’m sure that any of your Southern kin (and mine) who fought in the Civil War were otherwise good people. However, they supported, tortured and killed to maintain an evil and vile institution. You can criticize the textbooks all day long, but facts are facts.
Our Confederate heritage is a source of shame, not pride. I worry about our future when after 140+ years, so many haven’t figured that out yet.

Your right, imagine a republican brining innocent people before a grand jury. I mean the prosecutor in Texas only empaneled 6 grand juries to get Tom Delay. And lets not forget Fitzgerald and “Scooter” Libby, having to settle for a conviction of forgetting who and what was said.
If the Washington case had been the democrats losing, there would have been any number of republicans in front of grand juries.

I mean, those guys are such great humanitarians and guardians of virtue, standing up for poor, helpless, yet pure of heart, exploited female workers. If not for them, why, Miss Jones would have to save for years to retain a polyester-wearing pigknuckle attorney to seek justice for the emotional trauma of being hit on by the boss. Barbara,
The reasons given for succeeding from the Union, are well-known and the writings at the time are prevelant. They’re not a matter of opinion. You can refuse to accept facts (to your detriment), but you can’t disagree with them.
Here’s an excerpt from Alexander Stephens’ infamous “Cornerstone Speech” given between the time that Lincoln was elected and Fort Sumter was attacked.
“Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science. It has been so even amongst us. Many who hear me, perhaps, can recollect well, that this truth was not generally admitted, even within their day. The errors of the past generation still clung to many as late as twenty years ago. Those at the North, who still cling to these errors, with a zeal above knowledge, we justly denominate fanatics. All fanaticism springs from an aberration of the mind—from a defect in reasoning. It is a species of insanity. One of the most striking characteristics of insanity, in many instances, is forming correct conclusions from fancied or erroneous premises; so with the anti-slavery fanatics. Their conclusions are right if their premises were. They assume that the negro is equal, and hence conclude that he is entitled to equal privileges and rights with the white man. If their premises were correct, their conclusions would be logical and just—but their premise being wrong, their whole argument fails. I recollect once of having heard a gentleman from one of the northern States, of great power and ability, announce in the House of Representatives, with imposing effect, that we of the South would be compelled, ultimately, to yield upon this subject of slavery, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics, as it was in physics or mechanics. That the principle would ultimately prevail. That we, in maintaining slavery as it exists with us, were warring against a principle, a principle founded in nature, the principle of the equality of men. The reply I made to him was, that upon his own grounds, we should, ultimately, succeed, and that he and his associates, in this crusade against our institutions, would ultimately fail. The truth announced, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics as it was in physics and mechanics, I admitted; but told him that it was he, and those acting with him, who were warring against a principle. They were attempting to make things equal which the Creator had made unequal.”

Barbara,
You are quite correct in being proud of your family history. I am also proud of mine and they have been in the South since the seventeen hundreds. As far as I can find, they ranged from lawyers & teachers, dusk-to-dark farmers & store keepers, homemakers & doctors. Some were not successful but they never broke the law, just themselves. Almost all males had military experience.
I would say that all were independent. When the South was threatened, as they felt it was, young and old males went to war for the Confederacy. It wasn’t a “draft”, it was an understanding that no one will take over your life and property.
Southerners are still like that. They have fought in many wars since then. Many are fighting in Iraq now.
As to slavery, I was not there then and I cannot imagine anyone being a slave. Perhaps the economic demands of the day (cotton) brought about that status, just as illegal immigrants today are brought here or come here to work. I am not saying that illegals and slaves are the same, I am saying that both should not be part of a legal society.
Slavery has been around since biblical times. The most advanced covilizations of history had them and we remember the amazing history of Rome and Greece for example. I remember the amazing history of the South and my family. For me and many others, my family and my Southern heritage are integral parts of this great country of ours. I shall always appreciate them.

Would hate be sniping at Debbie for her “$10,000 per plate” comment by reminding her of the sale of the Lincoln Bedroom to liberal donors?
Would hate be responding to her “conservatives put government into everybody’s business” comment with the fact Democrats are supporters of the IRS and universal health care? Would even the IRS be in more of our personal business than universal health care? I think not.

I don’t know how or why it became the norm for US Attorneys to serve at the pleasure of the President. I presume that the practice was adopted at a time when people understood the distinction between the 3 branches of government. To hire and fire judges with the expectation that they will influence and/or subvert legislation is wrong. It was wrong when Clinton did it and it was wrong when W did it. Judges are there to interpret and uphold the law, not write the law. To say that what W did is no big deal serves to further blur the lines between the brances of government and lower the ethical bar.

The firing of the US attorneys is more than merely political. It is payback, pure and simple. One cannot dismiss it as the mere exercise of a presidential right. Read the NY Times today for a good article on how desperate New Mexico Republicans lobbied the Justice Department because they didn’t feel that prosecution of an incident of voter registration fraud was progressing fast enough, thus jeopardizing their reelection chances. Or how officials within the DoJ lobbied for the dismissal of Carol Lam for prosecuting the corrupt Duke Cunningham.
It was cheap payback, much of the kind that “outed” Valerie Plame, that led to the firings. All the attorneys fired had very good performance appraisals. The firings had nothing to do with the quality of the performance.
That’s why these firings need to be investigated thoroughly. They reek to high heaven as a perversion of justice.

Louise, I agree with you about the shameful aspect of our southern history. I’d like to point out that although many southerners owned slaves and supported the non-human-rights status of the captives, the majority were just poor common folks who owned no slaves, little or no land, and scratched out survivial as best they could. Sadly, THESE are the men and boys who fought and died for an ideal that benefitted the moneyed more than themselves, and the women who suffered starvation and ravages of war.
Throughout history, rich men have started wars to protect or further their own interests, and poor men have fought them. It’s not always the case, but often enough. How different would our history books be if these people had stood on the side of righteousness instead of following their “idealistic” leaders to destruction? For whatever it’s worth, I am sorry for what they did. I am.

Wrong-o, it is all politics. If a prosecutor does not please his boss, he may get fired. Pure politics.
And about Plame, that was the state department number 2 man under Powell, he leaked Plames name, not anyone in the VP’s office. I am sure you remember how the state department “liked” Bush and the war.

Anybody with an ounce of common sense can see this war is a mistake.
Just impeach the idiot decider who decided to start this disaster.
Its not rocket science people.
Geez.

War is the correct, natural state of man. Had the native americans declared war immediately and slaughtered christopher columbus’s discovery voyage to a man, they would have been spared the diseases that wiped out 90 percent of the indians.
War is necessary for survival.

“Throughout history, rich men have started wars to protect or further their own interests, and poor men have fought them. It’s not always the case, but often enough.”
JK (does that stand for Just Kidding?), I’ve seen some dumb@ss blog posts by liberal demoncats on this blog, but that just ABOUT throws them all under the bus.
So the Revolutionary War was about money (well to escape taxes, yes). The War Between The States was about money. World War I was about money. World War II was about money. Do you idiots on the left dream up this crap while hitting the bong, or is your delusionary liberal appeasement world of war history only start after Vietnam?
“How different would our history books be if these people had stood on the side of righteousness instead of following their “idealistic” leaders to destruction?”
How different would OUR NATION be if candyassed liberals like you ran things during the aforementioned times of war.

Oooo Markus, my feelings are sooooo hurt. Let’s see, I stipulated that was not the case with all wars. Our war for Independence was indeed over ideals worth fighting for, IMO, but the victory did not make ALL the people here free, now did it? D’OH! The world wars you mention were STARTED by greed. That we entered to help finish them for good reasons does not change the motives that started them. But please, continue the oh so meaningful name-calling, Sparky. When you shine your light on this board, the rest of us know it’s time to go home. Toodles!

Ahh, TFTT, I thought it was the Irish you would take issue with. So I’m germy too???? Ha-ha. You are absolutely right. We must laugh at ourselves above all else. After all, I’m pretty funny sometimes…… if I do say so myself.
Thanks Dusty for your post. You are much more eloquent than I. Now that you mention it, we did have some lawyers in our family too. Down in South GA. You and I may be related….
